Features
Still Image Recording:
This camera can record still images on a standard 3.5" High Density floppy
(not supplied). In addition, you can store images on an optional Memory
Stick by using the optional Sony MSAC-FD2M Memory Stick floppy disc adapter.
CCD Image Sensor:
For optimal image quality, the MVC-FD87 uses a 1/2.7"
1.3 Megapixel Super HAD CCD.
A/D
Conversion: This camera uses
12-bit DXP A/D conversion.
Focusing: In addition to auto
focus, you can manually focus the camera by choosing one of the following focus
settings: macro, 0.5 m, 1.0 m, 3.0 m, 7.0 m, or infinity.
Auto Power-Off: If you do not
operate the camera for approximately 3 minutes during recording, it will turn
off automatically to prevent battery wear.
Date and Time:
Using the date and time function, you can record the date and time on the still
images that you record. You can select Day & Time, Date, or Off. When you
select the Day & Time setting, the camera records the date, hour and minute
on the picture. When you select the Date setting, the camera records the year,
month and day on the picture. The date and time do not appear on the LCD screen
while you are shooting. Instead, they appear during playback.
LCD Backlight On/Off: To increase
battery life, you can turn the LCD backlight off.
Self-Timer: When you use the
self-timer function, the camera will take a picture 10 seconds after you press
the shutter button.
E-Mail Mode: In E-Mail mode,
the camera records a small size (320x240) image at the same time as a still
image. Small size images are convenient for e-mail transmission.
Viewing Images: Still
images can be viewed on the camera's color LCD screen,
or the images may be transferred to a computer, where they can be displayed or
manipulated with the use of compatible software.
Program AE: You can choose one
of the following Program AE modes:
- Twilight: Suppresses the
blurring of colors between a bright subject and a dark background. This
allows you to record the subject without losing the dark atmosphere of the surroundings.
- Twilight Plus:
Increases the effectiveness of the Twilight mode.
- Landscape: Focuses only on a
distant subject, allowing you to record landscapes.
- Panfocus: Changes the focus
quickly and simply from a close subject to a distant subject.
- Spot Light-Metering:
Select this mode when there is a backlight or when there is strong contrast
between the subject and the background.
Picture Effect: Besides normal,
you can select one of the following picture effects:
- Solarize: The light contrast
is clearer and the picture looks like an illustration.
- B&W: The picture is
black and white.
- Sepia: The picture is
sepia-toned like an old photograph.
- Negative Art: The color and
brightness of the picture are reversed as in a negative.
Index Mode:
This
feature lets you to display six images at a time, allowing you to easily find
the image you want.
Slide Show: The Slide
Show function lets you play back images one after the other. The
interval between the pictures can be adjusted, allowing you to choose 3,
5, 10, and 30 seconds or 1 minute. When repeat is selected, the images are
replayed in a continuous loop.
Protect:
This feature
allows you to protect images, so they cannot be deleted accidentally.
Delete: You can
delete a selected image, or you can delete all the unprotected images at once.
Zoom and Trim Functions:
Once a still image has been recorded, you can zoom in on any portion of the
image and save the new enlarged image. The original image is still held in
memory.
Print Mark:
You can place a print mark on still images recorded with this camera. This mark
is convenient when you have images printed at a shop that conforms to the DPOF
(Digital Print Order Format) standard.
Effect Menu Settings:
- P.Effect:
Allows you to select a Solarize, Black and White, Sepia, or Negative Art
effect.
- Date/Time: You can select Day & Time, Date, or Off.
File Menu Settings:
- Disk Tool:
When using a floppy disk, you can select Format or Disk Copy. Disk Copy will copy all the disk information to another floppy.
- File Number:
Allows you to select a setting of Series or Normal. The Series setting numbers images in sequence, even
if the floppy disk is changed. The Normal setting resets the file numbers every time a
floppy disc is changed.
- Image Size:
You can select an image size of 1280x960, 1280
(3:2), 1024x768 or 640x480.
- Rec Mode:
Allows you to select Text ( records images in black & white GIF format for a clearer image of
text), E-Mail (adds a 320x240
JPEG file in addition to the normal image) or Normal.
- Slide Show: The
interval between the pictures can be adjusted, allowing you to choose 3,
5, 10, and 30 seconds or 1 minute. When repeat is selected, the images are
replayed in a continuous loop. In addition, you can Start or Cancel the Slide
Show from this menu.
- Print Mark:
Turns the Print Mark function On or Off.
- Protect:
Turns the Protect feature On or Off.
Camera Menu Settings:
- Digital Zoom: Allows you to turn
the digital zoom On or Off.
- Sharpness: Allows you to adjust the
sharpness of the image from +2 to -2 in intervals of 1.
- White Balance:
Allows you
to set the white balance to Auto, In Door,
Out Door, or Hold.
- Flash Level: Allows you to select
one of three levels for the built in flash (High, Normal or Low).
- Exposure: Allows you to select an
exposure level of -2 to +2.
Tool Menu Settings:
- Copy: Allows
you to copy images.
- Resize:
Allows you to change the recorded image size in Play mode. You can change the image size to
1280x960, 1024x768 or 640x480.
Setup Menu Settings:
- Demo:
The Demo is only displayed when you use the AC power adapter in Still or
Movie mode. When the Demo mode is turned On, a demonstration will start if
you do not operate the camera for approximately 10 minutes.
- Language:
Allows you to display the menu items in English or Japanese.
- Clock Set:
Allows you to set the date and time.
- Beep: Allows you to turn on a
beep and shutter sound, turn off the beep only, or turn off both the beep and
shutter sound.
- LCD Bright:
Allows you adjust the LCD screen brightness.

included software allows you to transfer images from a floppy
disk to a computer hard drive and view and store transferred

Viewing or Transferring
Images
to a Computer: You can transfer the
still digital images stored on a floppy disk to your computer. The computer must have these minimum requirements:

- Shutter Button:
When pressed, the camera records still images.
- Zoom Lever:
Allows you to select Telephoto (subject appears closer) or Wide-Angle mode
(subject appears farther away).
- Built-In Flash
Back of Unit:
- LCD Backlight On/Off Button: Allows
you to turn the LCD backlight On or Off.
- Flash Button: Allows you to
set the flash to Auto (no indication), Auto red-eye reduction, Forced flash,
or No flash. In Auto (no indication) mode, the flash automatically strobes
when the surroundings are dark. In Auto red-eye reduction mode, the flash
strobes before recording to reduce red-eye. In Forced flash mode, the flash
strobes regardless of the surrounding brightness.
- Power On/Off (Charge) Switch

- Play/Still Switch:
In the Play position, you can play back or edit images. In the Still
position, you can record still images.
- Focus Button:
Allows you to choose one of the following focus
settings: macro, 0.5 m, 1.0 m, 3.0 m, 7.0 m, or infinity.
- Program AE Button:
These buttons allow you to
cycle through the Program AE modes.
- Display Button:
For the LCD screen, this button turns the display
indicators On or Off.
- Menu Control Button: Used to select
and enter menu choices on the LCD menu.
