Our take on the Sony MVC-FD87

Looking for an easy way to get into digital photography? This versatile Sony Mavica is a perfect place to start. You simply snap pictures as you would with a traditional camera. The impressive MVC-FD87 stores them as digital photos on a standard 3-1/2" floppy disk, which you can pop into just about any PC for image transfer. Want to store more photos than a floppy can hold? With the help of an optional Memory Stick®-to-floppy disk adapter (see "Accessories") you can use Sony Memory Stick media for capacities up to 128 MB!

And that's not all. The MVC-FD87 offers plenty of features designed to make your pictures as perfect as possible. A 1.3-megapixel CCD delivers sharp, clear and colorful images (up to 1280 x 960 resolution). The 3X optical/6X digital zoom makes it easier to focus in on the fine detail. The 2-1/2" color LCD viewscreen lets you view pics as soon as you've snapped 'em, and discard the ones you don't like. That frees up space on your floppy disk for more pictures! And the included rechargeable battery lets you snap up to 750 images on just one charge.

Features

Still Image Recording: This camera can record still images on a standard 3.5" High Density floppy (not supplied).  In addition, you can store images on an optional Memory Stick by using the optional Sony MSAC-FD2M Memory Stick floppy disc adapter.

CCD Image Sensor:  For optimal image quality, the MVC-FD87 uses a 1/2.7" 1.3 Megapixel Super HAD CCD.

A/D Conversion: This camera uses 12-bit DXP A/D conversion.

Focusing: In addition to auto focus, you can manually focus the camera by choosing one of the following focus settings: macro, 0.5 m, 1.0 m, 3.0 m, 7.0 m, or infinity.

Auto Power-Off: If you do not operate the camera for approximately 3 minutes during recording, it will turn off automatically to prevent battery wear.

Date and Time: Using the date and time function, you can record the date and time on the still images that you record. You can select Day & Time, Date, or Off. When you select the Day & Time setting, the camera records the date, hour and minute on the picture. When you select the Date setting, the camera records the year, month and day on the picture. The date and time do not appear on the LCD screen while you are shooting. Instead, they appear during playback.

LCD Backlight On/Off: To increase battery life, you can turn the LCD backlight off.

Self-Timer: When you use the self-timer function, the camera will take a picture 10 seconds after you press the shutter button.

E-Mail Mode: In E-Mail mode, the camera records a small size (320x240) image at the same time as a still image. Small size images are convenient for e-mail transmission.

Viewing Images: Still images can be viewed on the camera's color LCD screen, or the images may be transferred to a computer, where they can be displayed or manipulated with the use of compatible software.

Program AE: You can choose one of the following Program AE modes:

  • Twilight: Suppresses the blurring of colors between a bright subject and a dark background. This allows you to record the subject without losing the dark atmosphere of the surroundings.
  • Twilight Plus: Increases the effectiveness of the Twilight mode.
  • Landscape: Focuses only on a distant subject, allowing you to record landscapes.
  • Panfocus: Changes the focus quickly and simply from a close subject to a distant subject.
  • Spot Light-Metering: Select this mode when there is a backlight or when there is strong contrast between the subject and the background.

Picture Effect: Besides normal, you can select one of the following picture effects:

  • Solarize: The light contrast is clearer and the picture looks like an illustration.
  • B&W: The picture is black and white.
  • Sepia: The picture is sepia-toned like an old photograph.
  • Negative Art: The color and brightness of the picture are reversed as in a negative.

Index Mode: This feature lets you to display six images at a time, allowing you to easily find the image you want.

Slide Show: The Slide Show function lets you play back images one after the other. The interval between the pictures can be adjusted, allowing you to choose 3, 5, 10, and 30 seconds or 1 minute.  When repeat is selected, the images are replayed in a continuous loop.

Protect: This feature allows you to protect images, so they cannot be deleted accidentally.

Delete: You can delete a selected image, or you can delete all the unprotected images at once.

Zoom and Trim Functions: Once a still image has been recorded, you can zoom in on any portion of the image and save the new enlarged image. The original image is still held in memory.

Print Mark: You can place a print mark on still images recorded with this camera. This mark is convenient when you have images printed at a shop that conforms to the DPOF (Digital Print Order Format) standard.
