JVC Mobile

Our take on the JVC KD-AVX2

JVC loaded the KD-AVX2 in-dash DVD player with so many great features, it makes the ideal centerpiece for your mobile video system. The highlight: a 3.5" screen built right into the faceplate that lets you watch DVD videos while you're parked, or load your own custom images onto the display. It plays a wide variety of formats, and allows you to expand your system into a full-blown mobile theater.

You'll be able to play your standard and home-burned CDs and DVDs. And JVC's Giga MP3 feature lets you play up to 100 hours' worth of MP3 files on a single recordable DVD. That's a whole lot of entertainment, without having to carry around your entire CD collection.

Surround sound
The KD-AVX2 features on-board 5.1 Dolby® Digital and DTS® decoding, plus preamp outputs for a powered center-channel speaker and a powered subwoofer. With the right speaker setup in your car, you'll really be able to enjoy the thrilling channel separation that surround sound provides. And few things sound as good as music on DVD-Audio, so you audiophiles will be happy to know that the KD-AVX2 will play your high-end DVD-Audio discs, too.

Expand your system
The audio/video output gives you the option of connecting a backseat video screen and a set of wireless headphones, so the folks in back can keep watching a movie while you're driving. Meanwhile, you can enjoy the radio up front without being disturbed.

Add a compatible XM or SIRIUS radio, and you'll be able to enjoy coast-to-coast broadcasts of the best radio entertainment around. An audio/video input lets you connect another source, like a video game console, VCR, or backup camera. And the preamp outputs make it easier to add external amplifiers for even more power.

For each User preset, you can independently adjust the following frequencies: 60 Hz, 150 Hz, 400 Hz, 1 kHz, 2.5 kHz, 6.3 kHz, and 15 kHz. The level of each frequency can be adjusted from -5dB to +5dB in 1dB increments.

MP3/WMA Playback: The KD-AVX2 can play MP3/WMA files that have been recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. The disc must be recorded in one of the following formats: ISO 9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet or Romeo. Each disc can have a maximum of 3500 files and 250 folders, with a maximum of 999 files per folder.

Dual Zone Capable: The 2nd Audio Output allows you to route all A/V entertainment to an optional back seat monitor and headphone system, allowing front seat passengers to enjoy independent CD or radio programming.

Satellite Radio Ready: You can connect a satellite radio tuner to the KD-AVX2 in a couple of ways. The unit is directly compatible with the SIRIUS SIR-JVC1 Satellite Tuner for JVC (item # 607SIRJVC1). The Terk XMDirect universal XM Satellite Radio tuner (209XMD1000) can be connected to and controlled by the head unit when used with the XMDirect Smart Adapter for JVC (209XMDJVC1).

Note: In addition to the optional satellite tuner, you will also need the proper antenna and a subscription to SIRIUS or XM Satellite Radio.

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-AVX2 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.

Source Naming: The KD-AVX2 allows you to assign names of up to 16 characters for AM and FM stations (30 station maximum), and a name up to 16 characters for a connected external component. You can also assign names of up to 32 characters for CDs (including a connected CD changer, but not MP3/WMA or CD Text discs--30 disc maximum).

+10/-10 and +100/-100 Buttons: When selecting CD tracks or MP3/WMA/JPEG file within a folder, you can jump ahead or jump back to the nearest track/file number that is a multiple of 10 by using the "+10" or "-10" buttons on the remote. For example, when selecting track/file 32 from track/file 6, you can press the "+10" button three times (>10, >20, >30) to get to 30, then the "track up" button twice (>31, >32) to get to track/file 32. For MP3/WMA/JPEG files with a number greater than 99, use the +100/-100 buttons.

Preamp Outputs: The unit has the following preamp outputs: front left, front right, rear left, rear right, center and subwoofer.

Subwoofer Output: In addition to the 2.5V front and rear preamp outputs, this unit has a single 2V subwoofer preamp output on a 6" pigtail. The subwoofer output has independent level control, adjustable from -6 to +08, and a selectable phase setting that can be adjusted to Normal or Reverse.

Crossover: The KD-AVX2 has an internal crossover that allows you to choose one of the following cutoff frequencies: of 80, 120, or 150 Hz. This crossover acts as a low-pass filter for the subwoofer preamp output and a high-pass filter for the front and rear preamp outputs.

Audio/Video Input: The audio/video input can be set to one of the following modes:

  • Audio + Video: choose when connecting an A/V component like a VCR
  • Audio: choose when connecting an audio component like a cassette deck
  • Camera: use this mode when connecting an optional rear view camera
  • Camera Rev: the mirror image of the rear view through the optional rear view camera is automatically displayed on the monitor

Compatibility with Optional Input Adapter: An optional JVC Line Input Adapter (item # 105KSU57) or Aux Input Adapter (item # 105KSU58) may be used to provide an additional auxiliary input on this unit. This feature allows you to connect a portable audio player, such as a portable MP3 player, to this unit as an additional audio source. The adapter connects to the CD changer input on this unit. When the adapter is connected to this unit, a CD changer cannot be connected.

Optional Interface Adapter for iPod: The optional KS-PD100 adapter allows an iPod digital music player with a dock connector to be hooked up to and controlled by the KD-AVX2. You'll be able to scroll through all your playlists, albums, artists, genres, and composers directly from the head unit. Song titles and other file information show up right on the head unit display. The iPod is also charged while it is connected to the KD-AVX2.

Dimmer: This unit is equipped with a wire that JVC calls an illumination lead, however, it acts as a dimmer lead. The dimmer can be set to Off (normal brightness at all times), Auto (display window automatically dims when your car head lights are turned on), or On (display is always dimmed). Also, this unit has a timer that allows you to turn the dimmer on for a period of time each day. The timer allows you to select a start time and an end time for the dimmer.

Note: The amount of dimming is fixed, it cannot be adjusted, and the illumination wire must be connected for Auto operation.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The KD-AVX2 has a "steering remote control" lead on the back panel. When used with the optional SWI-ALP interface (item #127SWIALP), you can retain the use of your steering wheel and/or rear seat radio controls when replacing the factory head unit in select vehicles. The SWI-ALP is compatible with over 95% of the vehicles made from 1986 to the present. MP3/WMA Playback (Giga MP3): The KD-AVX2 can play MP3/WMA files that have been recorded on DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, and DVD+RW discs. The disc must be compliant with UDF-Bridge format. Discs must be created on a computer with a DVD burner. The DVD burner software application must be compliant with UDF-Bridge format.

Note: DVDs recorded on stand alone consumer DVD burners are not compatible with this unit.

Direct Access: Using the supplied remote, you can directly access any title or chapter on a DVD, and any track on a Video CD.

Random Play: When playing a Video CD, you can play the tracks in random order.

Intro Play: In this mode, you can play the first 10 seconds of each track on a Video CD.

Zoom: When playing DVDs, Video CDs or JPEG files, you can enlarge the picture using the zoom feature. You can choose one of six zoom settings. Once the image is enlarged, you can move the image around on the screen.

Dynamic Range Compression: This function reduces a Dolby Digital soundtrack's dynamic range so you can hear quieter dialog without being overwhelmed by loud sections. You can choose a setting of Auto or On.

Awesome Product

Written By carter, Scottsdale, AZ on Sunday, January 28, 2007

I wanted video without the popup screen, this delivers. Super easy to install, tons of options, plus its video!

The video is so clear and great. Surprisingly high resolution. I can even take video from my iPod.

The menu could be better, Especially when you are navigating your iPod. but I am fine with it.

The installation was very, very easy.

Its kinda expensive.

Overall it is an awesome product.

found a problem

Written By Big Lou, florida on Sunday, October 01, 2006

Great unit except for when you hit a bump on the road. After a few months of wear and tear the screen loses it's connection in the back of the face and turns off the display but you can still hear music. If your like me on the road alot and pressed for time i'm constantly looking at the clock. I get very annoyed to see a blank screen almost every time.

Great Sound and Picture

Written By Stephen, Fairfield County, CT on Wednesday, September 06, 2006

I ordered this and it was here in 4 days (Holiday in between).Correspondence was timely, accurate and easy to understand. The unit itself is awesome. I found it easy to navigate and learned it in about 20 minutes.

I have a 2006 Nissan Frontier and the only negative I could see was the installation kit. It fit extremely poor and took me some 5 hrs to install it. The wiring took me 20 minutes, the rest of the time was trying to get this thing to fit. After some fabrication to the install kit, It fit and looks fine. Customer service tried to help but couldnt. I would recommend Crutchfiled and this unit. Good Luck.

Very cool

Written By glenn, Va Beach, VA on Monday, August 28, 2006

Ok, I have to say this is by far the best gadget there is for in Dash DVD units. I installed this baby in my 2004 Tundra DC V8, and let me tell you I looked all over the place for a DVD unit that could display a rear back up camera and be able to connect external monitors to. The problem is when backing up my truck I can't see anything behind me due to the tail gate and the hight of the truck, so a back up camera was a must have. In addition to the camera, I didn't want a unit that had a monster 7 inch screen pop out everytime I wanted to do something with my Radio. The 3.5 wide LCD is sharp and crisp. I purchased a remote camera and a pair of LCD headrest monitors to keep my kids busy on long Road trips. As stated in previous reviews, the back of this unit has more inputs and outputs that I really know what to do with. I also installed an IPOD connection interface to keep my tunes going and going and going. Keep in mind that all this power and connections all in a single Din size unit. WOW! I did have to call Tech support 2 times and those guys walked me though the connection of my radio to reverse back up lights for my rear camera. Everything works as expected and I saved at least 300-400 on installation charges! Cruchfield rocks! Thanks for the quick delivery and great customer service! Regards
Glenn

JVC KD-AVX2

Written By shawn, North Platte, NE on Monday, July 03, 2006

well, im gonna start off with saying this is by far the best head unit that i have ever had.

a little dissapointed in the fact that there was no SD card slot... but i got over it.

k, now for the good stuff. i've had this in my '97 Trans Am since it came out (about 4.5 months now), have had a few issues with the car's factory wiring (just bought the car 5 days before the head unit) but nothing with the jvc. as for the parking break wire i believe a ground wire works just as good for me.

k, now for the cool stuff. the a/v input allows me to hook up my digital camera and make movies that i can watch in my car. for front speakers i have 2 jl 6.5 xr coaxials, 6 inch jl W-0 subs set up for mid-bass in the middle, jl vr 6*9s in the rear, a total 440 amp runnin the 6" subs, and the 6*9s. Another total 440 runnin some total 10 inch subs... and this system screams. the roll off between the subs and speakers is outstanding. the hp filter in the unit shuts off frequencies the 6.5s cant play. the crossover lets you choose the cut off between the hp filter and the sub lp filter.

the remote is complicated, not gonna lie. the dvd play back is awesome for a lil 3.5 inch screen. fits in my dash like a glove. easy to navigate. wish i could save a backround or screen saver. a/v out keeps it flexible for more moniters. i wish it had 2 rca cables for the sub instead i had to split the one to run into my amp.

i would recomend this head unit to anyone. im pleased with all of the features and the way it is set up.

Awesome Head Unit

Written By manny, Fremont, CA on Tuesday, June 06, 2006

I've had this in my 2002 Altima for last couple of months. This is probably the best unit I ever had. The unit is featured packed, but the interface is simple and easy to learn.

The video play back is not the greatest, but it more than suits my needs (can't expect much from a 3 1/2 inch screen).

The best part is the sound. I have the deck hooked into Polk 6 1/2" components in the front, Polk 6 1/2" two-ways in the back door, Polk 6x9 (3-way) in the back dash, and 10-inch Kicker subwoofer. Everything's powered by a 5-channel Kicker amp. The setup sounds amazing and it all starts with the best car deck I ever had!

Dvd-A compatible DTS, and Dolby Digital, Great in Dash

Written By Anonymous, Boston MA on Monday, June 05, 2006

This Head unit is the one I had been hoping for! And here it is. If your looking to do TRUE DVD-A without breaking the bank and dealing with multiple components this is the one. With built in decoding for MLP, DTS, and DD 5.1 the head unit is a very powerful package for the price. For audio it can do speaker level and distance settings for fine tuning, along with a user programed EQ. The 3.5" screen does its job for Dvd menus and settings, but if your looking for video rather than audio I would take a look at the 7" screens. My only complaint is no Center channel speaker level output. Bottom line, if your looking to do a high quality audio system and not looking to spend over a thousand on a head unit I would recommend checking this out.

THIS THING IS AMAZING

WoW! I dont truly know where to start with this amzing product that JVC has come out with. I have a 2001 jetta and this has put the final touch on my cars interior. Its easy to use, looks great, and performes like nothing i have owned before. In the same day i got my deck installed i hooked up 5 (five) six inch LCD screens in all of my head rests and it works great with those. but if you are looking for a deck that will make you and your passengers happy i would tell you to all go with this if you could

JVC KD-AVX2

Written By Shawn, Battlefield, MO on Wednesday, May 03, 2006

The JVC KD-AVX2 is a great, easy-to-use, feature-packed stereo. The oversized face should not be a problem for most vehicles. The faceplate height is the same as a conventional 1-DIN stereos outer trim ring. If youve had an aftermarket stereo in your car before and it fit WITH trim ring, you should be okay. The color LCD is sharp, bright, great color and contrast, easy to read even when sunny. Giga MP3 lets you play MP3s on DVDs for over 78-hours worth of continuous music. It supports multisession so you can add new tracks/folders later. Improved over the AVX1, the AVX2 remembers its position in the track when shut off. List browsing doesnt interrupted playback, and allows for very fast navigation of a DVD MP3 disc. My only complaint, it takes a full 35-seconds to start playing an MP3-filled DVD+RW when first turned on.
I also got the KS-PD100 iPod adapter and was a little disappointed to see the List browsing doesnt work with it. Navigating the iPod is very different and less intuitive than using an MP3 CD/DVD. However, once I got used to it, I can navigate with it just as quickly so overall the iPod integration is pretty good, but not perfect. It does display full titles and elapsed counter with the iPod. Tracks cue up instantly.
The tuner lacks preset buttons, but pressing up/down goes through the presets. Setting them is done in the List menu and takes many keystrokes and patience.
If you like eye candy, the AVX2 doesnt really offer much. A few plain-looking wallpapers (several are different colors of the same thing), cant add your own, no animations or screensavers like Pioneer. It pretty much just displays text on a wallpaper, although text can auto-scroll.

Great Purchase!!

Written By Henry, New City, NY on Tuesday, April 04, 2006

I have nothing but good things to say about this receiver. Initially I was a little skeptical and thought it was going to be really annoying to control, but after playing with it for about 15 minutes I figured it out completely. It is the best radio I have ever bought. When I bought it, I also bought the Ipod adapter and I am happy that I did. Everything sounds great. I had upgraded my speakers a while back and was using them with my factory radio, but now with this radio I finally know what my speakers can do.
It is really great though. I would recommend it to anyone who has less than a 4" opening in their dash. If you have a 4" opening I would say that the new jvc 7" dvd receiver they have might be the next best thing (bigger screen, same capabilities I'm assuming). I know that this is my only jvc product thus far, but I couldn't see how the 7" version could be any different from this one. Anyway, thats all I gotta see about this.
Get it if you can (with the ipod adapter too if you have an ipod).
