Our take on the Samsung DVD-HD931

Videophiles have been waiting eagerly for the arrival of Samsung's groundbreaking DVD-HD931 ever since its introduction at the 2003 Consumer Electronics Show, where it received a CES Innovations Award for Design and Engineering.

The DVD-HD931 features two significant firsts: the ability to upconvert a standard DVD signal to HD-compatible 720p or 1080i, and a DVI output (until now only found on some HDTV tuners). If you already own an HDTV-ready TV with a compatible DVI input — especially a "fixed-pixel" TV such as a flat-panel plasma or LCD, or an LCD or DLP projection model — you can enjoy DVD picture quality that's even superior to progressive-scan DVD (480p).

The DVD-HD931's advanced Faroudja de-interlacer/scaler circuitry is what makes this high-resolution picture possible. When you connect a conventional progressive-scan DVD player to an HD-capable fixed-pixel display, a 480p analog signal is sent through the component video output to the TV, which then "scales" or upconverts the signal to the TV's native resolution. The DVD-HD931 performs this scaling internally, while the signal is still digital. When the signal passes to the TV via a DVI connection, the upconverted signal stays digital until it's displayed on the screen, thus eliminating a cycle of digital-to-analog and analog-to-digital conversions, and the accompanying loss in signal quality.

If you want to see how good DVD can look on your DVI-equipped plasma, LCD, or DLP TV, Samsung's DVD-HD931 is the player for you!

Features
Inputs and Outputs Note

Features

HD Upconversion: The DVD-HD931 has the ability to upconvert a standard DVD signal to HD-compatible 720p or 1080i and pass it through the DVI output; upconverted signals are not passed by the component video output. If you already own an HDTV-ready TV with a compatible DVI input - especially a "fixed-pixel" TV such as a flat-panel plasma or LCD, or an LCD or DLP projection model - you can enjoy DVD picture quality that's even superior to progressive-scan DVD (480p).

Video D/A Converter: This player uses a 54MHz/10-bit video digital-to-analog converter. This high-bit, high sampling D/A converter helps to reduce digital artifacts to give you a better picture.

Audio D/A Converter: This unit has a 96kHz/24-bit audio digital-to-analog converter.

PCM Down Sampling: You can select a PCM Down Sampling setting of On or Off. When On is selected and you are playing a DVD recorded in 96kHz, the signal is down converted to 48kHz/16-bit before it is passed through the digital outputs. When No is selected and the unit is playing a non-copy-protected DVD recorded in 96kHz, a 96kHz/24-bit signal passes through the digital outputs. If the DVD is copy-protected,  the digital signal is automatically down converted.

Progressive Scan Output: Progressive-scan video has less flicker and fewer motion artifacts than the traditional interlaced-scanning method, resulting in a superior picture. To take advantage of this feature, you must have a television with component video inputs that supports the progressive scanning mode. The component outputs on this unit can be set to pass either progressive or interlaced video.

Faroudja's DCDi: This unit has a progressive scan output featuring Faroudja's patented Directional Correlational Deinterlacing (DCDi). This technology applies new motion adaptive deinterlacing that prevents the introduction of motion artifacts and jagged edges from video signals that originated from video cameras (such as with sporting events, live camera feeds and music videos).  The result is a sharper, noise-free picture with finer details. Video images are displayed with optimum naturalness and color reproduction with less flicker and fewer motion artifacts than traditional interlaced scanned pictures.

Digital Natural Image Engine (DNIe) Picture Improvement Circuitry: DNIe technology uses the following processes to optimize the moving picture image and color, while amplifying the contrast ratio and fine details:

  • Motion Optimizer: integrates temporal and spatial concepts to ensure clear images even when the motion is very fast
  • Contrast Enhancer: employs a contrast ratio of one million or more and a new algorithm that can reproduce the optimal contrast to provide deep and rich image quality
  • Detail Enhancer: automatically analyzes the picture signal and reproduces images in amazing detail, resulting in more lifelike video
  • Color Optimizer: video signals being generated are analyzed and the quantities of reds, greens and blues are calculated to provide the colors most natural to the human eye

MP3 Playback: This unit will play MP3 files recorded onto CD-R and CD-RW discs using the ISO 9660 or Joliet formats. MP3 files with a compression rate from 128-320 kbps are supported. Each disc can have a maximum of 500 files and 300 folders.

JPEG Playback: This unit will play JPEG files recorded onto CD-R discs using the ISO 9660 or Joliet formats. All JPEG files on a disc can be played back in a slide show. The slide show has a selectable interval that can be set to 2 seconds, 6 seconds, or 10 seconds. You can zoom in on any selected image (2x or 4x) or rotate an image 90-degrees clockwise. Each disc can have a maximum of 500 files.

3D Sound: When listening to a DVD in two-channel stereo through the analog outputs, the 3D Sound function uses a Phantom Surround Processor to give you a simulated surround effect. 3D sound is possible only on discs recorded using Dolby Surround or Dolby Digital and does not work when using the digital output.

Zoom: The Zoom function allows magnification (2x or 4x) of selected screen areas, without distortion, even as the movie is playing. You can move the zoomed image around the screen.

Screen Fit: This feature allows you to eliminates the black bars when viewing widescreen DVDs on a regular 4:3 screen.

Resume Play: Resume play allows you to resume playback of a disc from the point where you last stopped. The stopping point is cleared when the Stop button is pressed more than once or the disc tray is opened.

Instant Replay: This function is used to replay the previous 10 seconds of the movie from the current position.

Instant Skip: This function skips playback ahead 10 seconds.

Bookmark: This function allows you to store bookmarks on a disc that can be easily recalled. You can bookmark up to 3 scenes at a time.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

DVI (Digital Visual Interface) Output: The DVD-HD931 has a DVI-I jack for connecting a compatible TV or monitor. This player supports HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) technology, which provides secure data transmission for high definition video. Only DVI-HDCP supported devices can be connected. A 6 foot DVI cable is supplied.

Note: Though the player has a DVI-I connector, the only signal output from the DVI-I connector is digital.
