Our take on the Kenwood KAC-7252

Build your car audio system on a firm foundation of power — Kenwood power! Kenwood amplifiers are famous for their rugged, no-nonsense reliability and superior sound quality. Efficient MOSFET power supplies, a built-in cooling fan, and beefy internal components ensure an abundant supply of clean, crisp sound at a great dollar-to-watt value.

The KAC-7252 2-channel amplifier can bring on the bass with plenty of power to drive your subs or component speakers. Use the variable bass boost circuit to add a little extra thump. The bass boost can be controlled by the included wired bass remote, so you can fine tune the system right from the driver's seat!

Looking for the high-end details? The KAC-7252 is a great match for a pair of high-quality component speakers. The variable high- and low-pass filters (50-200 Hz) let you tailor the frequency output to the job at hand.

Speaker-level inputs allow you to hook this amp up to your factory stereo. If you're running multiple amps, the preamp outputs let you daisy-chain another amp, without running extra RCA cables. Gold-plated connectors guard against corrosion that can degrade signal quality over time.

Features

Line Level Inputs: The RCA type line-level inputs have a gain (Input Sensitivity) control that will accept an input signal of 200mV to 5.0 Volts.

Speaker Level Input: The KAC-7252 comes with a speaker level input harness. Once you splice the speaker wires from the receiver to the harness, you have plug-in convenience to the amplifier. This feature makes it easier to add an amplifier to a factory radio or to a receiver with no preamp outputs. The maximum power output from the source receiver can be no more than 40 watts.

Line Level Output: The amplifier has a line level output for feeding a second amplifier. The output is the same signal fed to the input.

Crossovers: The KAC-7252 has built-in high pass and low pass crossovers. The high pass crossover's slope is 12 dB/octave and is continuously variable from 50Hz to 200Hz. The low pass crossover's slope is 24 dB/octave and is also continuously variable from 50Hz to 200Hz.

Remote Bass Boost: The bass boost level is adjustable from 0-18 dB and the boosted frequency is adjustable from 40Hz to 100 Hz. The adjustments to the bass boost circuit are made using the wired remote control. The remote is designed to mount in the front of the vehicle for easy access and is wired to the amp using the included 20' cord. The remote's mounting hardware is also included. The width of the remote is 2.763", the height is 1.301", and the depth is 1.961".

Fan: There is a fan on top of the amp to help dissipate heat and ensure cool, reliable operation.

Stereo/Mono Operation: If the KAC-7252 is to be bridged, the operation mode switch on the top of the amp is set to mono. When switched to Mono, the signal from the left channel input only is used.

Protection circuitry: The amplifier features protection circuits that will turn the amp off in case of the following events:

  • Speaker output contacts ground
  • Speaker wire short-circuits
  • Unit malfunctions and DC is sent to speaker output
  • Internal temperature is too high
  • Loss of ground of head unit or amp

Inputs and Outputs

  • Speaker outputs: Screw terminals (0.33" wide)
  • Remote: Remote bass boost control jack (RJ-45)
  • GND: Phillips-head screw for RCA signal ground
  • Speaker-level input: Multi-pin input for use with included speaker level input harness

Additional Specifications

CEA-2006 Compliant: CEA-2006 is a new system of testing & measurement methods for mobile audio amplifiers. This voluntary standard advocates a uniform method for determining an amplifier's RMS power output and signal-to-noise ratio. The criteria for measuring power uses a DC input voltage of 14.4 volts and the RMS power output is measured into a 4-ohm load, with 1% or less Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) plus noise, and at a frequency range (for full range amplifiers) of 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. Signal-to-Noise ratio is measured in weighted absolute decibels (dBA) at a reference of 1 watt into 4 ohms. CEA-2006 allows consumers to compare car amplifiers and receivers on an equal basis.

Power: Using the CEA-2006 guidelines listed above, the power output of the KAC-7252 is 150 watts RMS x 2 channels.

Kenwood also lists the following specifications:

  • Power output at 2 ohms: 250 watts x 2 (1 kHz, 0.8% THD)
  • Power output at 4 ohms, bridged: 500 watts x 1 (1 kHz, 0.8% THD)
  • Input impedance: 10k ohms
  • Operating voltage: 14.4 V (11-16V allowable)
  • Current consumption: 40A

Kenwood KAC-7252

Written By Steve, Chesapeake, VA on Thursday, September 28, 2006

I did all kinds of research before finally deciding to purchase this amp. I was looking for one that could power a couple of older 12" Pioneer IMPP woofers but also be capible of handling upgraded subs. The IMPP's were rated at 150w RMS and 450w peak each. So I ordered the amp, hooked it up in stereo mode as soon as it arrived and it sounded great. It was pushing them so hard they actually blew on me. So I'll be purchasing 2 Alpine Type E's here in the future and will be rating those accordingly.

Great Amp & Great Value

Written By Sammy, La Crosse, WI on Friday, August 11, 2006

I have a pair of 12" MTX 5500 Series dual coil subwoofers wired in parallel (bridged) operating at 4 ohms, and i was having a difficult time finding an amp that matched up well. At 300 watts RMS, I thought I would never find a decent amp at an affordable price until I found this one. In bridged mode, it puts out 500 watts RMS at 4 ohms, which is perfect. To be honest, wasn't expecting much from this amp, but it really puts out a lot of power! My speakers really bump now! I'm very satisifed with this amp, and I would definetly purchase another Kenwood amp in the future.

Exellent amp

Written By Jeff, atlanta, ga on Thursday, July 27, 2006

I bought this amp to power (2)12in probox subs in a custom probox enclosure for my ram quad cab. It gave me much more power than i expected. I had the 4 ohm subs bridged but it was too painful and although it never cut off, the amp was getting a little too hot. I then hooked up the subs parallel...i guess (not bridged) and it still sounds unbelievable. Great amp at a great price!

Does exactly what its supposed to do!

Written By ModernGrowl, East Coast on Tuesday, February 21, 2006

This is a good amp, simply put. Its not going to win you any SPL competitions but it does pack a punch!
My application is running two Kappa Perfect 10.1d subs. I'm pulling everything this amp has to offer by running both channels at 2 ohms at 250rms each.
I must say its loud and hits hard, but only when pushed. I have input sensitive at 1.0 volts and I'm using the Bass Boost Remote at about 50hz boosted up to 9db. Then it hits very hard, but otherwise it may be a little light for some. Now 800watts would be awesome but we all don't have an endless amount of cash do we? I like my music very hard and loud, (Rock/Metal) and I like that kick drum to go through me. This amp does it, when pushed. I would recommend this Amp, it does the trick and don't be hesitant buying Kenwood. Kenwood products are fine, regardless of what fanatics say, trying to persuade you that you must buy "High End" or its not good enough. Kenwood is good, period.

This amp is perfect for a standard car audio system. Remote control makes it easy to adjust settings, 1 40 amp fuse makes it easy to install, and 500 watts makes subwoofer sound great.
