Our take on the Pioneer AVIC-N3

When it comes to multimedia entertainment, Pioneer's AVIC-N3 DVD player certainly delivers the goods. It packs a 6.5" touchscreen monitor, a DVD/CD/MP3 player, and a mobile navigation system in a standard-sized, in-dash package. It can even measure and display some of your vehicle's performance specifications. You'll always get where you're going with ease, and have tons of fun along the way.

Navigation made easy and fun
The AVIC-N3 comes with two DVDs with maps of the entire U.S., plus major metropolitan areas in Canada. To navigate, just insert the correct disc for your part of the country, enter your destination, and go. You can select a specific address, an intersection or street name, or a city's center.

To make traveling easier, you can also choose from over 11 million points of interest, including restaurants, gas stations, hotels, and more. The onscreen maps show you where you are and where you're going, while voice prompts delivered over your car's speakers tell whenever a turn is coming up. The built-in memory lets you remove the map DVD once your route has been programmed, so you can enjoy CDs and MP3s while you get visual and audio turn-by-turn directions.

Entertainment options
When you're parked, enjoy your DVD videos on the retractable screen. If you connect an optional backseat monitor, the kids in back can watch a movie while you drive — you can enjoy the radio up front while the navigation system guides you.

You've got plenty of system expansion options, too. Touchscreen controls let you add a compatible satellite radio and enjoy great XM or SIRIUS programming, coast to coast. And you can add another source, like a video game console or videocassette player, to the audio/video input.

Pioneer's iPod® interface adapter lets you play you iPod through the AVIC-N3, giving you touchscreen control over most of the iPod's functions. The enhanced display shows artist and song information on multiple lines for both iPod and satellite radio, and lets you change channels and select tracks easily. You'll even be able to see XM channel icons on screen.

XM NavTraffic
Connect the AVIC-N3 to a compatible XM radio, and you can subscribe to XM's premium NavTraffic™ service. You'll receive continuously-updated traffic information along your programmed route, including traffic accident alerts, road closure info, plus the average speed of traffic on many roads. You'll be prepared for traffic snags well in advance, and can adjust your route accordingly. NavTraffic is available in select metropolitan areas, and the necessary XM/NavTraffic tuner is sold separately.

Roadside Assistance
You'll also get a Roadside Assistance package. You can store emergency contact information and access it simply by pressing a single button. The map shows you exactly where you are, including latitude and longitude readings. And the receiver comes with an offer for a year's worth of free Roadside Assistance Service.

Vehicle dynamics
Want to show off how good a performer your car is? When you're driving, you the AVIC-N3's screen can display several vehicle dynamics specifications. These include acceleration, lateral G-force (which measures how tightly you're taking a turn), speed, angular velocity (how fast you're moving during a turn), and vehicle slope angle.

Great sound, easy system control
The built-in amp offers plenty of power, while a parametric equalizer offers three highly adjustable tone controls that'll make your music and movies sound just right. And if you want extra power, you can connect amplifiers to the three sets of preamp outputs.

If you need to keep the monitor retracted while you're driving, you can still control the system — an easy-to-see ten-character secondary display keeps you in full command, even if the monitor's closed.

General Features

Detachable Control Panel: To prevent theft, the control panel can be detached. Note: No case is provided for the detached control panel.

Motorized Video Display: This unit is equipped with a motorized 6.5" color TFT active matrix, widescreen LCD that serves as a video monitor and system information display. The display has a 16:9 aspect ratio, and a resolution of 1440 x 234 for a total of 336,960 pixels.

Touch Screen Controls: This unit has touch screen controls with interactive video graphics, making menu navigation easy. The screen is non-glare and smudge-resistant.

Display Angle and Position Adjustment: You can adjust the display's angle for better visibility. You can choose the LCD panel's angle between 50° and 110°. When the LCD panel is upright and it hinders the operation of the air conditioner, the position of the panel can be turned horizontal temporarily. The LCD panel's forward position can also be adjusted. When the Flap Setback is activated, the LCD panel retracts approximately 1/2".

Auto Flap: When this feature is active, the display automatically opens when the ignition switch is turned on and closes when the ignition switch is turned off.

Display Adjustment: You can adjust the display's brightness, contrast, color, and hue.

Display Dimming: The brightness of the LCD screen adjusts automatically according to the ambient light. The ambient light sensor is located on the top edge of the LCD panel.

Sub Display: When the LCD panel is closed, a sub display on the top of the LCD panel shows the current time or source information (radio frequency, CD track/time). The sub display turns off when the LCD panel is in the open position.

Widescreen Modes: You can choose from the following widescreen modes:

  • Full: a 4:3 picture is enlarged in the horizontal direction only, enabling you to enjoy a 4:3 picture without any omissions
  • Just: the picture is enlarged slightly at the center and the amount of enlargement increases horizontally toward the ends of the picture
  • Zoom: a 4:3 picture is enlarged in the same proportion both vertically and horizontally; ideal for a 16:9 screen
  • Cinema: a picture is enlarged by the same proportion as Full or Zoom in the horizontal direction and by an intermediate proportion between Full and Zoom in the vertical direction
  • Normal: a 4:3 picture is displayed as it is

MOSFET50 Internal Amplifier: This receiver is equipped with a 50 watts x 4 (peak) MOSFET amplifier for low distortion, high power output. The amplifier is b enough to power small subwoofers to moderate volume levels in compact cars and pickups. For higher volume levels from subwoofers, an optional amplifier may be connected to the preamp outputs.

Easy EQ Curves: This model features 6 preset EQ curves: Super Bass, Powerful, Natural, Vocal, Custom, and Flat. The Custom curve allows you to create and store EQ settings in memory. A separate Custom curve can be created and stored in memory for each source.

EQ-EX: This feature smoothes the effects of each equalizer curve, and allows you to adjust bass and treble for each source when the Custom curve is selected.

3-Band Parametric Equalizer: This unit includes a 3-band parametric EQ with Selectable Q Factor. You may select a low (40Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, or 160Hz), mid (200kHz, 500kHz, 1kHz, or 2kHz) and high frequency (3.15kHz, 8kHz, 10kHz, or 12.5kHz) to boost or cut within a range of -6dB to +6dB. The Q factor (slope of the boost or cut) may be selected from one of the following four options: 2N (narrow), 1N, 1W and 2W (wide). Selecting a narrow (steep) Q factor results in frequencies around the center frequency to be affected less by the boost or cut than they are with a wide Q factor. This feature is useful for taming frequency response problems caused by the dimensions, materials and speaker locations of a vehicle.

Selectable Bass and Treble Cut-off Frequencies: The cut-off frequencies for the bass and treble controls can be set independently of the 3-band parametric equalizer adjustments. The bass cut-off frequency can be set to 40Hz, 63Hz, 100Hz, or 160Hz. The treble cut-off frequency can be set to 2.5kHz, 4kHz, 6.3kHz, or 10kHz. The bass and treble controls have an adjustment range of -6 to +6. Note: Bass and treble levels are only adjustable when the EQ Preset is set to Custom and EQ-EX is turned on.

Adjustable Loudness: You can select one of three different levels of loudness compensation. A "low" loudness contour provides a +3.5dB boost at 100Hz and +3dB boost at 10kHz. A "mid" boost is +10dB (100Hz) and +6.5dB (10kHz). A "high" loudness contour is +11dB at both 100Hz and 10kHz. Note: These Loudness contours use a reference volume level of -30dB.

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged.

High-pass Filter: When you don't want sound in the subwoofer frequency range output from the front and rear speakers, you may activate the built-in high-pass filter. You may select a filter frequency of 50Hz, 80Hz, or 125Hz.

Subwoofer/Non-fading Preouts: In addition to the front and rear preamp outputs, there is one set of outputs that may be set for "subwoofer" or "non-fading" output. When set to "non-fading", the signal is full-range and the output level is user selectable from -6 to +6. When set to "subwoofer", the outputs are non-fading, and they may be set for normal or reverse phase, 50Hz/80Hz/125Hz low-pass output, and the level is user selectable from -6 to +6.

Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono.

MP3 Playback: This unit can play MP3 files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. MP3 files with a bit rate from 8-320 kbps are supported. Each disc can have a maximum of 8 tiers and each folder can have a maximum of 253 files.

Optional Aux Input: When used with item 130CDRB10 (sold separately) or item 130CDRB20 (sold separately), this unit can accept input from an auxiliary source, such as a portable CD or MD player. When item 130CDRB10 is used, a CD changer cannot be connected to this unit. Item 130CDRB20 allows you to connect an optional Pioneer CD changer and an auxiliary source to this unit.

Cellular Mute: This feature mutes or attenuates the unit's audio output when a cellular call is received, then restores the level once the call is over. To use this feature, you must have a cellular phone with a muting output that can be connected to the muting input wire (yellow/black lead) of this unit.

Optical Digital Output: The optical digital output (proprietary connection) on the rear of the head unit allows you to connect an optional Pioneer digital audio processor.

Rear Display: You can select what images are output from the rear A/V output. When the navigation screen is displayed on the unit's display, you can select either the navigation display or a selected source on a connected rear monitor. When the selected source has no visual image, nothing is displayed on the rear monitor. If you are using the Memory Navi feature, you can insert a DVD movie for rear seat entertainment.

Rear View Camera: The head unit features a function that automatically switches to the rear camera image (Rear View Camera In jack) when a rear camera is installed on your vehicle. When the shift lever is in the reverse position, the screen automatically switches to the rear view camera. You can also see the image of the rear view camera during normal driving, allowing you to keep an eye on a trailer or boat you may be towing.

DVD Features

Direct Search: You can directly access a specific location by entering a chapter number, title number, or elapsed time.

Multi-angle Display: With DVDs featuring multi-angle (scenes shot from multiple angles) recordings, you can switch among viewing angles during playback.

Fast Scan: When playing a DVD or CD, you have one fast scan speed in either direction.

Slow Motion: This feature allows slow motion playback in the forward direction only.

Repeat Playback: When playing a DVD, you can repeat the current chapter or current title.

Resume Playback: Before ejecting a disc, you can press the on-screen Return button to memorize the current playback location. If you insert the disc again and touch Resume, playback of a disc resumes at the same point you stopped previously. To delete the recorded position, touch and hold Resume with the disc stopped.

Note: If the DVD has a standard or widescreen menu option, the resume playback feature may not work correctly.

Navigation Features

Disc Compatibility: The AVIC-N3 is compatible with specific DVD-ROM navigation map discs only and cannot play standard DVD-ROM discs.

DVD Navigation Maps: The unit comes with the CNDV-60M (East) Version 1.0 and CNDV-60M (West) Version 1.0 DVD-ROM discs, which cover the entire United States (including Alaska and Hawaii) and portions of Canada. These discs include a massive "Tele Atlas" database, which enables the units to provide the largest network of turn-by-turn routable roads. The discs provide nearly 11-million points-of-interest throughout the United States and Canada.

XM NavTraffic Ready: XM NavTraffic, powered by NAVTEQ Traffic, allows the unit to monitor real-time traffic conditions and routes the driver to the destination avoiding traffic congestion, using the optional GEX-P10XMT XM NavTraffic Satellite Radio tuner. The traffic information is provided through a continuous satellite broadcast with data from leading commercial traffic data providers, government departments of transportation, police and emergency services, road sensors, cameras, and airborne reports. Separate subscriptions to XM Radio and XM NavTraffic are required.

Stock Prices: In addition to XM NavTraffic, you can receive stock price, sports, news, horoscopes, and other information and display it on the screen when the unit is connected to an XM Satellite tuner. You can display the prices of up to 12 stocks.

Voice Operation: In order to operate the navigation unit by voice, you need the microphone kit (130CDVC1), which is sold separately.

Voice Guidance: In addition to graphical directions, the AVIC-N3 provides voice guidance and turn-by-turn directions.

Memory Navi Mode: While the map disc is inserted, you can store the data on the map disc into the memory of the navigation unit. If the map disc is removed from the navigation unit after the data is stored, navigation is performed using the data in the memory (Memory Navi mode). During the Memory Navi mode, navigation is performed only using the data read into the memory. Therefore, some functions are restricted compared with navigation using the map disc (DVD navi mode). In the Memory Navi mode, you can play a music CD or DVD video on the navigation unit while navigation is taking place.

Navigation Display Modes: There are four types of map display and two additional view modes:

  • Map View: displays the standard map

  • Driver's View: displays the map from the driver's viewpoint

  • Guide View: the map of your surroundings is shown on the left, and an arrow indicating the direction of travel is shown on the right

  • Route View: displays the name of the street you will next travel along and an arrow indicating the direction of travel

  • Vehicle Dynamics Display: displays three instruments that indicate the status of your vehicle. You can change the values displayed by the instruments on the left and right of the Sensor View, allowing you to choose from the following: voltage, acceleration, side acceleration, angular velocity, slope, direction, or clock

  • Rear View: If you have installed a rear view camera, and the camera is set to "On", the rear view image is displayed on the left-hand side of the screen, while the map of your surroundings is indicated on the right

Enlarged Map of the Intersection: When "Close-up of Junction" in the Settings menu is On, an enlarged map of the junction appears while driving.

City Map: When driving in a city, the detailed city map is indicated if the map scale is set to 0.05 mi (50 m) or lower (only those cities whose detailed city maps are registered in the map disc).

Scroll Mode: Touching anywhere on the map for at least 2 seconds changes the map to Scroll mode and the map begins scrolling in the direction you touched. The scrolling stops when you remove your finger from the screen. At this time, the cross pointer appears at the center of the screen. Also, a line connecting between the current location and cross pointer appears.

Location Information: An icon appears at registered places (home location, specific places, address book entries) and places where there is a POI icon. Place the cross pointer over the icon to view detailed information.

Destination Input: The Destination Menu gives you many different ways to choose your destination:

  • Point Of Interest (POI): you can search for a Point Of Interest by selecting the category or entering the Point Of Interest name. Additionally, selected Points Of Interest in a certain category can be shown on the map, and you can check the location on the display while driving.
  • Freeway Search: you can set the entrance or exit of a freeway as your destination
  • Telephone Search: if you know the telephone number of your destination, you can quickly search for your destination by specifying the telephone number
  • Return Home and Go To: if your home location is registered, the route home can be calculated by a single touch of the touch key from the Main menu. Also, you can register one location, such as your workplace, as your favorite location, and the route is calculated in a similar way.
  • Destination History: any place that has been searched before is stored in the Destination History
  • Address Search: you can input your destination's address by house number, street name, and city
  • Vicinity Search: allows you to search for Points Of Interest in your surroundings on the map
  • Address Book: places that you have registered manually, such as your home, are stored in the Address Book. Simply select the place you want to go to from the list and a route to that place will be calculated.

Modifying the Route Calculation Conditions: You can change the route calculation conditions using the Route Options menu:

  • Number of Routes: This setting controls whether the system should calculate only one route, or several routes. You can select 1 (only one route judged as being optimum by your Navigation System is calculated) or Multiple (a maximum of 6 route options are calculated).
  • Avoid Toll Road: This setting controls whether or not toll roads should be taken into account. You can choose On (calculates a route that avoids toll roads) or Off (calculates a route that may include toll roads).
  • Avoid Freeway: This setting controls whether or not freeways may be included in the road calculation. You can choose On (calculates a route that avoids freeways) or Off (calculates a route that may include freeways).
  • Avoid Ferry: This setting controls whether or not ferry crossings should be taken into account. You can select On (calculates a route that avoids ferries) or Off (calculates a route that may include ferries).
  • Route Condition: This setting controls whether the fastest or the shortest route should be calculated. When Fastest is selected, the system calculates a route with the shortest travel time to your destination as a priority. When Shortest is selected, the system calculates a route with the shortest distance to your destination as a priority.

Checking the Set Route: You can check information about the route between your current location and your destination. You can select two methods: checking the passing streets with a list; and checking the shape of the route by scrolling the map along the route.

Recalculating the Route: You can recalculate the route to avoid a traffic jam or road work ahead. You can set the length of the area, and avoid just that area, or you can even search a new route from the current location to your destination.

Adding Way Points to the Current Route: You can select way points (locations you want to visit on the way to your destination) and you can recalculate the route to pass through these locations.

Areas to Avoid: If you register Areas to Avoid, such as crowded intersections or congested areas, routes can be calculated that avoid those areas.

Address Book: The Address Book can store up to 300 registered locations. These can include home location, favorite places, and destinations you have already searched.

Emergency Information: The Emergency Info screen provides important emergency information pertaining to your vehicle, insurance, and current location, which could be useful in the event of an accident or breakdown. The Emergency Info screen includes the following:

  • "You Are Currently At": Your current position is indicated by the street name, and your latitude and longitude.
  • Personal Information: Your VIN number, insurance policy number, and the telephone number of your insurance company can be entered and displayed.
  • Emergency Tow Service Phone: The toll free number for the nearest emergency roadside assistance appears on the screen. This number is supplied by Signature's Nationwide Auto Club, and appears only if you have registered your unit with Pioneer and have signed up on-line with Nationwide Auto Club (1st year service is paid for by Pioneer). If you choose not to subscribe, or if your subscription has expired, you can enter your own roadside assistance telephone number.
  • Locate Car Service: In an emergency, you can search the Emergency Info screen for Auto Services in the vicinity of your current position, and set the current route. You can choose from three sub-categories: Automotive, Rental Car Agency, and Car Dealer.

Loading Registered Locations Data From a CD-R/CD-RW: Address Book data stored on a CD-R or CD-RW can be loaded to the navigation system. This function is used when moving Address Book data from a Pioneer navigation unit with a PC card slot to a Pioneer navigation unit without a PC card slot.

Changing Background Picture: In the menu operation screen, you can indicate a picture you like on the background. Some pictures are already stored, but you can also use pictures (JPEG format data) created by a personal computer or a digital camera. If you save the pictures to a CD-R (or CD-RW), you can use them as background pictures. Additionally, several background pictures are stored in the Pioneer DVD map discs.

Overall a thumbs-up

Written By David, Ivyland, PA on Sunday, April 15, 2007

I've had the N3 installed for about a year now. I've read all the reviews posted here and I have to seriously disagree with some of the negatives. For one, the navigation is fantastic. I've had two portable Garmin navigation units and the AVIC is definitely better. The map database doesn't have some of the streets for a neighborhood in my area that went up about 2 years ago, but the entrance is there even though it doesn't have a name shown on the map.

I also have to disagree with the audio comments. I have my N3 hooked up to JL Audio amps and speakers. The gains are definitely not set all the way up and the volume is plenty acceptable at 10-12. If I really want to listen to the music extremely loud, I have on occasion turned the volume up to 20. Seriously though, at that level the music is so loud that you can't hear yourself talk.

My one complaint would be the iPod interface. It's great in that it mimics the iPod screen, but the interface is slow. I also don't like that when you select artist for your search, it always starts at the first artist in alphabetical order. I wish it would leave off where you last were searching. Other than that, no biggie.

I did have one problem early on. The RCA output harness that came with the N3 was bad and the rear outputs were completely non-functioning. I replaced the RCA harness under warranty and all has been well since.

AVIC-N3 - Better than N1 and N2

Written By Michael, Indiana on Friday, December 29, 2006

I have to laugh at how many people are reviewing the N1 & N2 and giving that review as the N3. I am a previous owner of the N2 (and have used an N1), and now own an N3. Each generation of AVIC-N(X) series is an increase over the previous, and the N3 is no exception. Many of my complaints with the N2 were fixed in the N3, as well as all the problems with the N1. The N3 sub display (when the LCD is closed) is MUCH brighter and easier to read, an improvement over the N2. The iPod interface is no longer an "external" device, and can actually display information, creating a much better experience. Team the N3 up with the GEX-P10XMT unit (XM with Nav), and you get station Logos and NavTraffic information in select cities. The map software (60) is better than the previous 40 & 50 versions, and has more details, and better streets and information, and improves the routing feature by not taking you in the wrong direction. Sure some roads might be off a little, but this is suppose to be an "aid" while driving, and you still need to use your head while driving and look for the location, let the N3 guide you to the general area, but 95% of the time its spot on once you complete the training of the sensor.

Also make sure you connect the speed signal wire to receive that information, as the location information is MUCH better with it connected.

The controls on the front of the N3 are nicer than the N2, and feel better, although its just a slight change.

All in all, I would say the N3 is a vast improvement over the N2.

Navigation System Ideal for Business Travel

Written By Chris, Los Angeles, CA on Tuesday, September 12, 2006

I recently purchased the Pioneer AVIC-N3 in-dash navigation system for my new SUV and it has been an absolute dream. My morning commute has seriously been cut in half. Also my road trips to business meetings are so much easier now that I don't have to spend hours printing out directions from point to point, or getting hopelessly lost. I had heard great things from friends and online research and while I never thought I would say this, my Pioneer navigation system has definitely made my life easier.

Pioneer Avic N3 (June 2006)

Written By Jay, Rochester, NY on Sunday, June 18, 2006

Let me start by saying that I am a big fan of Pioneer. I have had Pionner decks my whole life and the quality of their merchandise and warranties are unparelled in todays marketplace.
Last summer(September) I bought the Avic N1 first generation Navigation system for my 2003 Eclipse. The movements on the navigation were precise and easy to read not to mention the radio/MP3 and DVD was clear and easy to use. My father who is 72 has had no problem using my Avic-N1 navigation system.
May 16, 2006 I started to see some issues with my N1s Navigation and one day later the "brain unit failed" as it was diagnosed by Pioneer. Pioneer has now replaced my Avic-N1 with a Brand New Avic-N3 and the differences are significant to say the least.
I loved my N1 but the N3 blows it away. The map is more detailed and interactive, as well as, being the most well color coded Navigation maps Ive seen. The real difference between the two models is the new discs. The CDNV-60MP are the new (purple) dics that contain 11 million points of interest and best of all updated software. You can actually update your Avic-N1, N2, or D1 with these discs...They can be obatined from Pioneer. The N3 integrates satelite radio, IPOD, Audio/Video (digital camera, PS2, XBOX 360, etc.), Radio, MP3 and Navigation seemlessly.
The N3 does have its downfalls. MP3 search and the XM guide could be a little faster but you need to remember that this is not a computer it is an in dash nav system doing a ton of different things at once.
My feeling is that the multiple routes, voice commandsand other options make this unit amazing...not to mention its Pioneer!

Looks good, but pretty useless in the navigation area

Written By Jimmu, San Jose, CA on Sunday, June 04, 2006

I was excited to get this unit, upgrading from an Alpine CVA-1005 of about 7 years. One big plus was the touch screen, and the aforementioned ability to change audio settings when the screen is closed.
However, this unit lacks some serious navigation functions that make it pretty much useless unless all you wanted was a dynamic map of your current location.
One of such function is the ability to look for the closest POI. Say, for example, you're looking for the closest Target, you can't. Looking through the POI list, it'll show the list of all Targets it knows about, but you'll have no way of telling which one is closer unless you click on each and every one of them.
Another useless function is the Freeway entrance/exit search. It'll show the entire list of exit for a particular freeway, but it won't tell you which one is closest to you.
Overall, I'd rather put my 7-year old unit back in because it has a much more useful navigation function.

A great overall solution

Written By Andrew, Detroit MI on Tuesday, May 30, 2006

I got the AVIC N3 and had it installed professionally. I am very happy with the navigation and audio functions, with only two exceptions:

1. The iPod interface is very useful, I don't have to even touch my iPod and can control everything from the touch screen. However, the touch screen controls are slow, and the shuffle mode is difficult to toggle on and off.

2. The Sirius interface is not great - getting artist/track information and channel info on the station presets should be much easier if not even automatic. XM interface might be better?

The map coverage is fantastic, and the navigation inputs are intuitive and easy to use, even when 'locked out' of some features while driving. I especially like the ability to get guidance and control all audio functions even when the pop-up screen is tucked away. The flexibility of audio control for subwoofer and bass/mid/hi frequency and levels is perfect for me. This system makes the most of my factory speaker/subwoofer combination so I didn't have to upgrade everything all at once.

All-in-all, only a few minor improvements needed for the N-4...

AVIC-N3 in a 1997 Mustang Convertible

Written By Philip, Silicon Valley, CA on Tuesday, May 09, 2006

I installed my AVIC-N3 over the weekend in my 1997 Mustang Cobra Conv. I have the Mach 360 system (so ford amps) and so I used the recommended adapter to continue to use the Ford Amps. The sounds is great.
I put the hide-away unit under the passenger seat and the ipod adapter behind the passenger kick panel. I left the ipod cable in glove box (which locks). The Crutchfield support was great easily helping me find the speed sensor wire!

Bottom line, I am very happy with this combination!

REVIEW REDUX AVIC-N2

Written By 2PACOLYPSE NOW, Upper Marlboro, Maryland on Thursday, April 20, 2006

Eventhough this is the N3 model, from what I can tell, there really isn't much difference between the N2 and N3 model here, except for the extra $$$.

My prior review in January of the N2 model I gave it 4 stars I think. But since then, the N2 model has some serious, serious flaws I've discovered. The Navigation system for all intents and purposes is completely flawed. It's either telling you to turn to places that aren't there, or to make u-turns from destinations you clearly are trying to reach. I just came from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina last weekend and had I not followed Mapquest from Yahoo to get to the destination down there and back, the N2 navigation system would had me in Florida by the time it told me to turn off here or turn off there. Still fighting with Pioneer about getting accurate, updated software because it sucks.

Second, like the previous reviewer said and a local Audio shop basically confirmed is that I'm not getting the most outta my new Alpine amp because of the lack of inputs on the N1, N2, and I'm sure the N3 and Z1 will have the same problem. Basically, I've turned the volume up to 62 which is as far as the N2 will go, and salesman still reiterated that had I had a top of the line in dash Cd player with the proper inputs, I could have had much better sound and much louder sound as well. Eventhough that disturbed me somewhat, I'd still be happy if Pioneer would care more about their customers and admit and fix the Navigation problems all it's software is apparently giving the people who purchased their in dash Nav systems. Knew I should have stuck with Alpine.
