Matt Lamb assembled the system in his 1995 Nissan 200SX the old-fashioned way — one step at a time. He started the process by installing Sony's CDX-C4750 CD receiver, with its D-Bass low-frequency enhancement, CD changer controls, and two sets of preamp outputs. Matt quickly realized that his factory speakers were no match for the Sony, so he replaced them with two pairs of JBL GTO630 3-way 6-1/2" speakers (one pair in the doors, one pair on the rear deck). Dynamat Speaker Kits reinforce the sheet metal and guard against vibration in both locations.

Next, Matt wanted bass, so he added two JBL Grand Touring Series GT1041 10" subwoofers in a Q-Logic sealed enclosure, and hooked up a JBL BP-300.1 mono subwoofer amp (low-pass set at 100 Hz) pushing 150 watts RMS per sub. He found that there was no easy way to secure the equipment to the floor of his trunk, so he removed the carpet from his trunk, and traced its outline on a large piece of 3/4" particle board. Cutting the particle board to size, he drilled holes in the board for wiring, attached the carpet, and installed it — instant installation platform!

Next, Matt added the Sony XE-744 equalizer in his double-sized dash opening and the Sony CDX-727 10-disc CD changer in the trunk. Even with equalization, the mids and highs were not keeping up with the JBL subs. Enter "Big Mother" — the Kappa 255a, an impressive-looking five channel (50 watts x 4 + 200 x 1) amp from Infinity. Matt wired the full-range (50 watt) channels of the Kappa amp to the front and rear JBL speakers, using the internal crossovers to knock out the low bass for more efficiency.

Matt used two StreetWires 8-gauge amp wiring kits to power up the two amplifiers. A Street Glow 20" green neon tube adds a cool touch to the trunk installation. All wiring is routed through the installation board for a really clean look. Matt's future plans include building a custom enclosure to house the two current JBL 10"s (powered by the JBL amp) and a new 12" woofer (to be powered by the idle sub channel on the Kappa 255a). Check out the clean trunk installation — the Sony CDX-727 CD changer, the Infinity Kappa 255a amplifier, and the Q-Logic sub enclosure are arranged nicely on the carpeted mounting board.
