Set-up tips

Below, you'll find tips for getting the most out of your system — from simple setup tweaks to choosing key accessories that might not have come with your system.

HDMI cable An HDMI connection will give you the best picture and sound when you're connecting a high-def component.

Use the highest quality connection you can.
Not all systems come with a high-def-capable cable — if you're connecting your system to an HDTV, then you'll need an HDMI or a component video cable. Even if these cables are included, you might want to consider upgrading to a better quality cable. You can get more information in our articles on connecting your TV and why cable quality matters.

Pay attention to speaker placement.
Speaker height, angle, and location can all have a huge impact on your system's sound. For example, sometimes moving the subwoofer into a corner versus under a table can make a big difference, as can mounting your surround speakers on your wall rather than placing them on a shelf. Check out our article on speaker placement for specific pointers.

Make sure you're set up for surround sound.
Pay close attention to the surround settings on your system. If you're not getting sound from your back channels when you start your favorite movie, then the DVD may actually be the culprit. In some cases, you'll have to choose surround settings on both the main receiver/DVD player and on the DVD or Blu-ray Disc's menu. Universal Remote A universal remote can really help simplify the day-to-day use of your home theater system.

Get a universal remote.
Many remotes included with pre-packaged systems aren't designed to be particularly user-friendly. They certainly have all of the buttons that you need, but they tend to be small, tightly packed, and usually aren't backlit. Plus, if you have more than one component hooked up to your system, then you'll face the well-known situation of too many remotes crowding your coffee table. Consider purchasing a universal remote to simplify daily operation for yourself and for your family. Check out our article on universal remotes for information on what features to look for.

Keep your system running for years to come.
Cleaning kits are a good idea if you want to keep your system looking and sounding great well into the future. You can get brushes and sprays that keep your TV dust- and smudge-free without damaging the screen, as well as discs that clean the inside of your Blu-ray or DVD player.
