In this video, we'll explain 120Hz refresh rate — what it means for an LCD HDTV's performance, and how to decide if you need a 120Hz TV.
Steve: Hi! I'm Steve, and I'm here to talk about 120Hz refresh rate — a feature you'll see on some of today's LCD HDTVs.
All HDTVs redraw or "refresh" the screen's image a certain number of times per second. Typical TVs refresh the image 60 times a second, and this "60Hz refresh rate" generally creates a smooth, clear picture. However, as screens have grown larger, some viewers have found that 60HZ isn't always enough to cleanly display high-speed content like sports and video games. For example, think about the last time you were watching football, and saw a receiver grab a pass and sprint for the end zone. You may have noticed that he got pretty blurry as he sped up. That's because the TV's 60 Hz refresh rate just couldn't keep up.
However, TV makers have found that doubling the refresh rate to 120 times a second can virtually eliminate that problem on LCD TVs. At that speed, even rapid motion is smooth and clear.
So how do you know if you need a TV with 120Hz refresh rate? Well, if you watch lots of sports, action movies, or video games, it might be worth the extra investment. Otherwise, you may be just as happy with a 60 Hz LCD TV.
