Canon's HF S100 and HF S10 camcorders offer sharp high-def recording, plus a host of smart features for creative, user-friendly recording.

Zak: Hi. I'm Zak.

Tara: And I'm Tara and we're here in the Crutchfield video studio today to talk about Canon's HF S100 and HF S10 camcorders. And we have the HF S10 here with us. Now both of these models have a lot in common.

Zak: Yeah, they both shoot in high-def 1080i which is really great for your HDTV right.

Tara: Yeah. And it's actually the same resolution that you'll see on some high-def cable and high-def satellite signals so you're going to get really detailed home movies.

Zak: I really like how it's so small and light weight. It's easy to carry. It's easy to stash in a bag while you're travelling.

Tara: Yeah definitely. Now one of the things that we really like about these camcorders is how Canon has combined their instant autofocus with face detection, so that way when you're zooming in on a scene your subjects will snap into focus instantly.

Zak: Yeah, and combine that with Canon's quality optics and their built in optical image stabilization system. It's a really nice thing because you might not notice while you're shooting but your hand does shake just a little bit, and that image stabilization will help combat that shake.

Tara: Yeah, it keeps everything really smooth. Something else we like is the Video Snapshot feature. When you put the camcorder in this mode and you hit record, it'll take four second clips of video that it strings together later on into a little movie. And one of our copywriters Kristen tried this out when she was taking footage of her puppy Leo. It turned out really cute.

Kristen's Video Snapshot footage plays

Zak: It was really cute. And I really like that. It's easy to share a quick video montage with your friends. You can take a few of these four second clips, put them together in the camera, connect it to your TV, and you've got something right away. I like that.

Tara: Yeah. It's just really convenient. We also like these camcorders' digital camera mode.

Zak: Oh yeah. It can function as a stand-alone digital camera if you want to. It'll take 8-megapixel shots, but even better than that is while you're shooting video you can tell it to take 6-megapixel shots, so you get both.

Tara: Yeah, and this I really like. This way if you're filming like your child's soccer game, you can get all the action in video form of them heading up towards the goal, and then snap a quick picture as they score the goal to put on your fridge or on your wall later on.

Zak: Nice. I really like how both these cameras have a lot of manual options to work with. And if you find you're using the same one over and over again, you can assign it to this handy button right up front for easy access.

Tara: Yeah, that's really convenient. Something else that we like is that you can add accessories to these camcorders so you really have room to expand. There's a mic input on the side of the camcorder as well as a hot shoe on the top so you can add an external microphone or even a separate video light and you'll get even better home movies.

Zak: Something that I had a lot of fun with is 24 frames-per-second mode. And that's kind of neat because that's the same frame rate that they use to shoot major motion pictures that you go see in the theater. So your home videos, if you're making an independent film. it's hard to describe but it just has this cinematic look and feel that's really cool.

Tara: Yeah, it's a really neat effect. And you're going to get all of these great features on both the HF S100 and the HF S10. And both types of camcorder record to small high capacity memory cards called SDHC cards.

Zak: And in addition to recording to SDHC cards the HF S10 gives you 32GB of internal memory — now that comes out to two to twelve hours of recording time depending on your settings.

Tara: So both of these camcorders are great for everyone who wants to get a really nice high-def picture of their home movies on their TVs, and they give you room to expand too.
