Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Sony CDX-GT110

by Robert Ferency-Viars

Replace your factory stereo with Sony's stylish CDX-GT110 CD player. The stereo features a handy auxiliary input right up front, so you can connect your portable music player and listen to your playlists through the car stereo system. You can even adjust the level of the auxiliary source so that you don't have to turn up the volume when you switch from the radio or CD player.

A muscular built-in amplifier brings all of your music to life, and you can tweak the sound with the loudness function and six tone settings. Sony's excellent SSIR-EXA tuner locks on to AM and FM stations and keeps them sounding clear, so your local news and weather reports will always be on hand. You can detach the faceplate to keep the stereo safe when you're parked.

      Features

Drive S: The CDX-GT110 features the Drive S chassis platform. Drive S includes the CD mechanism, audio stages, 12 V power supply, and tuner section. The CD mechanism includes a suspension to resist shocks, a motor that draws less power, and a fast low-current pickup that improves durability and CD playback accuracy. The 45W Peak x 4-channel S-MOSFET Power IC produces clearer, more accurate sound, less distortion, and a higher signal-to-noise ratio than previous designs.

Detachable Face: The CDX-GT110 features a detachable face for theft prevention. The radio does not come with a protective face case.

Disc Compatibility: The CD receiver will play CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RW discs.

Tuning: The radio allows you to manual tune or seek tune AM/FM stations.

Local Seek Mode: This mode will only tune in stations with very strong signals during Seek tuning.

Mono Mode: This feature allows you improve poor FM reception by selecting a monaural signal instead of a stereo signal.

Preset Tuning: The CDX-GT110 features 3 modes to store and receive AM/FM stations. You can store up to 6 presets in each of the following bands - FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1 and AM2.

      • Best Tuning Memory (BTM): This feature selects stations with the best signals within the selected band and stores them in order of their frequency. You can select from FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1, and AM2.
      • Manual Tuning: You can manually tune and find your favorite radio stations one by one for FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1, and AM2.
      • Auto Tuning: You can use the seek button to help you search quickly through the available stations and then choose your own presets from these available stations.

Sound Setting: The CD receiver allows you to adjust the balance, fade, and EQ settings.

      • Balance: adjust left to right from L10 to 0 to R10
      • Fade: adjust front to rear from F10 to 0 to R10
      • EQ Lite: You may select one of the following EQ presets: Xplod, Natural, Hard, Upbeat, Vocal or Custom. For the Custom setting you can adjust the the Low (Bass) and HI (Treble) frequencies from +10 dB to -10 dB in 1 dB increments.

Loudness: This feature allows you to listen to your music clearly at low volume levels by reinforcing the bass and treble.

Amplifier Section: The head-unit's amplifier is CEA-2006 compliant and rated at 16 watts RMS x 4 channels at 4 Ohms.

No Preamp Outputs: The CDX-GT110 contains no RCA preamp outputs.

Front Panel Auxiliary Input: A front panel stereo 3.5mm mini-jack is provided to allow the connection of a portable audio source. Just connect your portable cassette, MD or MP3 player to this unit, and you can listen to the audio from the portable player through the speakers in your mobile audio system.

Mounting Angle: For flexibility of installation, this unit can be mounted between 0 (horizontal) and 44 degrees.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: Pressing the Off button once will turn off audio output, but the clock display and face/button illumination remain on. This makes the clock display and face/button illumination "Keyed" instead of "Unit On" only. To turn the unit off completely, you must press the Off button for two seconds.

Note: When installing in a vehicle without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you must turn the radio completely off (this defeats keyed operation), or you may wire the accessory power wire of this radio to an alternate source of accessory power to retain keyed clock and face/button illumination operation.

Dimmer: The CDX-GT110 feature a dimmer mode to dim the brightness of the display. You can choose from either "Dim On" or Dim Off".

Motion Display: This feature shows moving patterns on the display when turned on.

Auto Scroll: This feature allows long displayed items to scroll automatically across the display when the track is changed on a disc. This unit does not have CD-Text.

Eject: The CD disc can be ejected with the unit powered off. The CD player will automatically reinsert the disc if the disc is ejected and left on the lip opening of the player for several seconds.

      Happy with this stereo

Written By Timothy, Baltimore, MD on Monday, August 06, 2007
      Installed in a 2003 Saturn Ion 1
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced the factory CD player in my 2003 Saturn Ion with this unit. I am quite happy with it. As other reviewers said, the functions are simple and intuitive. It is just a good, basic unit with the very valuable auxillary input jack. I haven’t noticed any big improvement in sound quality over my factory unit, but that’s ok - my factory unit sounded fine (it just skipped CDs excessively and lacked an aux input jack).

I have zero previous experience working with car stereo equipment but was able to successfully install this unit in a leisurely 2 hours (I took some breaks and had some distractions). Most of that time was spent stripping the wires on the harness that comes with the unit. I have a cheap wire stripping tool that wasn’t working on these wires, so I resorted to using a razor blade. The harness adapter that I purchased from Crutchfield thankfully came pre-stripped.

The installation instructions that Crutchfield provides could be a little more detailed, but overall they were adequate to get the job done. I am thankful that they saved me an installation fee. I am also very thankful that Crutchfield tells you what additional parts you will need for the installation – in my case I needed a harness adapter and a plastic trim piece that holds the CD player in place. Their shipping is very fast as well.

One reviewer said he was annoyed by the warning beeps when you turn off the car, but leave the faceplate on. I agree that I would rather not have them, but I find them to be pretty innocuous and easy to ignore. It’s a simple little chime, nothing too annoying in my opinion.

      Great for the price

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced an aftermarket receiver in our 1999 Grand Caravan that had "eaten" a CD. For the price this is a great little receiver from a reputable company (Sony). Very little trouble with the install. Connecting all the wires was tedious, but doable. The wiring harnesses were great or it would have been torturous to install. Crutchfield rocks with all the helpful install sheets that are vehicle specific. This $80 recever would have cost me $$$$$ to get a "professional" install. Thanks for helping the common man.

this may not be the best head unit ever, but its a pretty darn good one for only 80 bucks, and one of the people who rated this said that you can't hook up an amplifier to this head unit...... my buddy has a amp hooked right up to this head unit, and it pounds

you get what you pay for, but in this case you get alot more for less

      Sony CDX-GT110

Written By Garrett, Bowling Green KY on Saturday, May 19, 2007
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Sony CDX-GT110 is a great receiver for the price. It has a great sound and won't hurt you to bad in the wallet. Easy to install and comes with some great features that you would not normally get in a unit at this price. I would recommend this receiver to anyone who is looking to replace a "basic" receiver. If you are looking for a "high" performance unit, this is not the one for you. It does have a EQ built in and is programable. I think you will be as pleased with this receiver as I am.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

i bought this unit to replace my factory system in a 1983 Ford LTD. it was the perfect basic stereo. unlike most of the previous buyers, i haven't bought any aftermarket speakers (but i soon will), so i didn't get the full performance, but it's better thern what i had. was nervous about installation but it was easy, and they even sent master sheets for other possible options to make sure you have everything, i will return.

      Sony comes through again.

Written By Brian, Spartanburg SC on Saturday, April 28, 2007
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I chose this unit to replace a cassette adapter I’d used in my 2001 Chevy Silverado extended cab pickup. When my cassette deck died, I looked for a reasonably priced upgrade with an AUX jack on the front panel for my iPod.

First up, that darned “dee dee dee dee” alarm warning if you turn your vehicle off before detaching the faceplate. It was cute the first couple of times but quickly became an annoyance. One which can’t be deactivated I might add. The second is the detachable face-plate itself. This of course, is touted as being a theft preventative. However, in the instruction manual it clearly states: “Do not subject the front panel to heat/high temperature or moisture. Avoid leaving it in a parked car…” What? I thought detaching the faceplate would be an option for me.

The Sony instruction diagram for the speakers lists them as Left Gauche and Right Droit. Huh? I called Crutchfield and was surprised to learn that they have the same instructions that I had. Hmm, okay I guess I’ll just look at the pictures then. Luckily for me, there were round speakers and oval speakers in my installation, so I looked at the pictures and figured it out. Sony may want to consider using English as the default language for their diagrams in the future.

I found the controls to be quite intuitive but being a guy with big hands, it would have helped if the buttons were a bit bigger and spaced further apart. Sometimes when all I want to do is adjust the volume, I hit one of the seek buttons instead, so don’t plan on using this if you’re wearing gloves.

Obviously a low end unit as indicated by the price. Unit works great and sounds just fine for a unit priced at this level. Unit is easy to use. I didn't "need the book" to figure out how to use it. Simple, easy, cheap, looks and sounds nice. Well worth the money!

Installed in a 2001 KIA Sportage
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently installed this into my girlfriends '01 Kia Sportage with great success. Even with factory speaker, the sounds quality is far superior to the factory tape deck.

The system interface is very simpy and easy to learn. My girlfriend hates to read owners manuals and has managed to fully utilize the system on her own in a about an hour.

The Aux input is something great as well. I was suprised to learn that such an inexpensive head unit had one.

Over all, great product for the price. I look forward to intalling Sony head units in my future vehicles,

Exceptional upgrade for a simple, new system with no frills.

Installed in a 1991 Chevrolet Suburban
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased and installed the CDX-GT110 for my father's 91 Chevy Suburban, which still had it's factory cassette/radio deck. Install went off without a hitch, the deck worked like magic with little tweaking.

It's got an advantage in that it's interface is very self-explanatory and user-friendly. My dad (who is not technologically inclined at all) quickly got used to the c ontrols, and recognized a noticeable difference in sound quality as well. I've got an Alpine deck in my car which costs twice as much (for all the added bells and whistles), and I think the CDX reproduces with just as much quality for a smaller price and a few less frills.

The Sony CDX-GT110 is absolutely perfect for an upgrade to a basic no-frills or dissapointements aftermarket deck with exceptional sound quality and easy user-interface. That said, it's still sturdy, sounds great, and looks great. A wonderful buy.
