Our take on the Channel Master 7777

by Steve Kindig

The 7777 is part of Channel Master's high-performance Titan 2™ series of mast-mounted preamplifiers. It is an ultra-low-noise, ultra-high-gain design that can solve a number of reception problems, and is especially effective for long-range "deep-fringe" applications. Several Crutchfield customers have reported that they are receiving digital stations from 50+ miles away using the 7777 in combination with Channel Master's 4228HD antenna.

Two-piece mast-mounted preamplifiers have an advantage over more typical one-piece in-line units because the amplifier module is mounted near the antenna itself, to eliminate amplification of any noise or interference in your coax cable. A preamplifier can improve reception whether the problem is weak signal strength at your antenna, or loss of signal quality due to a long cable run between your antenna and TV.

Installation is simple: run a length of RG-6 cable from your antenna to the 7777's amplifier module, and another RG-6 cable from the amp to the 7777's power supply. Power is provided to the amplifier via the RG-6 cable, so no other wiring is necessary, and the power supply can be placed indoors to avoid exposure to the elements. Finally, run a length of RG-6 from the power supply either directly to your TV, or to a video distribution hub.

Highlights:

  • two-piece design with separate mast-mounted amp module and power supply
  • high-gain, low-noise operation for deep fringe reception
  • compatible with both digital and analog TV signals
  • separate amplification for VHF (channels 2-13) and UHF (channels 14-69)
  • VHF gain: 23 dB, VHF noise: 2.8 dB
  • UHF gain: 26 dB, UHF noise: 2.0 dB
  • filtering for rejection of out-of-band signals
  • switchable FM trap (allows FM reception)
  • 75-ohm input and output
  • built-in lightning and surge protection
  • shielded die-cast aluminum housing
  • warranty: 90 days
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee
  • mast not included
  • RG-6 cable is recommended

    Features

Overview: The Channel Master Titan 2 Model CM-7777 Mast Mounted Antenna Preamplifier provides amplification for HD and digital signals received by your antenna. Preamplifiers can also be used when distributing the antenna signal to multiple TVs, as splitters reduce the signal strength at each output. The preamplifier comes with an indoor power supply, which connects via coaxial cable.

Signal Gain: The CM-7777 is a high gain, low noise preamplifier to be used in weak signal areas to boost the antenna signal to a viewable strength. The preamplifier provides 30 dB of signal gain on both VHF and UHF bands, at frequencies between 54 MHz and 1002 MHz.

Note: For areas with moderate signal strength, the CM-7778 Medium Gain Preamplifier is recommended.

Switchable FM Trap: The amplifier has an FM trap to block FM signals to prevent them from interfering with the TV signal. If you wish to unblock the FM signals, you will need to remove the cover, held in place by 4 Phillips-head screws, and set the switch to "Out".

Case: The CM-7777 features a rugged, outdoor-rated housing that can withstand temperatures up to 140°F. The preamplifier mounts to the antenna mast with the supplied U-bolt assembly just below the antenna. The unit mounts with the connections facing downward to keep moisture out of the housing and the connections dry.

Note: The preamplifier and supplied U-bolt assembly are designed for use with antenna masts up to 1-3/4" in diameter.

Connections: The CM-7777 has two F-type 75-ohm connections at the preamplifier: a combined VHF/UHF input, and an output/power connection. The indoor power supply (AC adapter) connects via coaxial cable, and includes a power inserter to energize the mast-mounted amplifier along the cable.

    Dimensions (Preamplifier):

    • Width: 4.904"
    • Height: 2.54" (without cables connected)
    • Depth: 3.733"

Used as a replacement upgrade for another brand with similar boost db levels claimed. The channel master provided a couple of new channels and eliminated the pesky drop outs on the prior received channels.
    Pros:
more channels and far less drop offs in signal performance.
    Cons:
    None.

    Channel Master cm-7777

Written By Jim, Bardstown Ky on Saturday, August 18, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The cm-7777 replaced antenna amp that I think lighting got to. The old amp pick up 32 channels and the cm-7777 pick up 40. Most of my neighbors have dish or cable. As far as I and 2 other neighbors who have regular antenna, our HD picture is better by far than any of theirs. They have more channels to watch and still say there is nothing on TV they want to see. All is working great.
    Pros:
    Easy to installed
    Cons:
    n/a

Great amp. I paired it with the channel master 4228 antenna and i am picking up 50 channels some up to 55 miles away. Best part about it i tried it in my garage rafters before trying a roof mount and its working great in the rafters so it will stay there for now. Great item.

    Channel Master 7777

I use this preamp with a Channel Master 4228HD Antenna about 30 miles out of St. Louis. The weather has to get real bad now before my picture starts to "studder". My signal is always at least 70% or greater.......rock solid.

    Reat Device

Written By Alex, Lake Forest, Illinois on Sunday, March 06, 2011

Works great...one thing I would change is the fm trap feature, ie make it more
accessible, You have remove the cover and change it which is a pain. If you want good
fm reception you have leave in the "out" position, having it in all but removes fm
reception...Beside I don't think fm interference ..the herringbone pattern on some
channels is visible anymore on HD ditigals channels. So remember if you are going to
use your antenna for fm reception change the fm trap to out before you install it otherwise
you will have climb on the roof and change it later. Other than that works superbly

With my Channel Master 7777antenna preamplifier in combination with my DB8 antenna, Cable suddenly looks inferior.
The proof that it realy works is that I am still discovering "new" channels, I last counted a total of 24 (including sub-s) channels.
The "crowning" is that I now receive WIRS-DT on channel 41, which is listed as being 107.8 miles away from my location. My next system addition will be the Channel Master 9521A Remote Control Antenna Rotor.
I highly recommend the Channel Master 7777 Antenna Preamplifier.

    Works Perfectly

Written By Nathan, Brockport, NY on Monday, April 26, 2010

I have a roof antenna (equivalent to CM3016) that normally works well, but when we have rainy weather or thunderstorms, FOX has trouble coming in. I am 18 miles from our broadcasting towers, across relatively flat land, but I have a long cable run and have it split 4 ways for TV and Radio. So, I decided to incrementally upgrade my antenna system starting with what I felt to be the most likely to improve my signal given all of the mentioned conditions. This preamp has worked wonderfully. During bad weather FOX will still break up occasionally, but the preamp delivers a strong consistent signal to my TV's tuner. It seems that the preamp doesn't really improve your reception like a bigger antenna would, so much as it overcomes all of the noise in your system to get the most out of your existing antenna. If you are serious about OTA TV, a preamp is mandatory equipment.

    Works Well for Fringe Areas

Written By Robert, Mtn Home, ID on Sunday, October 25, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit boosted the signal strength on a new HD antenna from 23% to 78%. It is rather touchy about it's power feed. It doesn't like the power unit being downstream of a splitter or lightning protection unit.

Also had to do a cold reset of my D-A converter several times to fix a signal overload problem on one channel.

If you are looking for an excellent Preamp and are kind of on a tight budget, this is the preamp for you. Got mine in 3 days(weekend order), installed it on my cheapo Uhf/Vhf and my new ota antenna's and had 13 digital and 9 analog stations in minutes. Before I bought this preamp I had 3 analog and no digital stations. and all stations come in CRYSTAL CLEAR. Fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Easy to install. Took about 20 minutes including putting up and putting away the ladder. Only additional item needed was a 6' outdoor coax cable. Increased my signal strength by 1-2 bars on my Samsung TV's signal strength indicator.

    Works great

Written By Leon, Minden, La. on Thursday, January 22, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a Winegard PR 8800 antenna that I hooked the cm7777 up to. I live in a national forest 38 to 40 miles from the TV towers in my area and I have 30 foot trees 20 feet from my antenna. I have seen a jump of 20 points on my signal meter for each channel (0 to 100 meter). I even picked up another channel that I was not recieving before. On Feb 17th LPB will switch thier broadcast in our area to a taller tower with 3 times the power so I know I will pick 3 more stations. I pick up 13 digital channels now and I do not have any problems with dropouts any more. All my stations are 263 to 268 degrees from me and that is lucky to have them all that close together. Before the cm7777 to recieve two of those stations I had to turn the antenna slightly. Now they just come in without having to tweek anything, so it is not so directional anymore. I would definately recommend this product to anyone out in the boonies like I am.

    Digital Signal Amplifier

Written By kyle, Atlanta, GA on Wednesday, December 10, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this booster with the 4221 antennae. I already owned a 20 db amplifier connected to a 12' antennae in my attic. My original antennae out performed the 4221 in the attic, but the gain in signal from the 4228HD was far superior to the older 20 db unit. I am able to receive a total of over 40 channels now (~20 digital). I would recommend the 4228HD to anyone.

AMP performed as advertised. Based on antennawebs recommendation, I indeed needed an amp to pick up the extra channels. The AMP allowed me to receive 4 more channels ( all digital ) than without.

    Followup to earlier review

Written By Thomas, Elkhart Lake, WI on Wednesday, October 15, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As suggested in my earlier review, I've now installed a second CM 7777 on a north-facing (Green Bay market) antenna mounted up in my garage rafters. I was alarmed when the reception was actually worse. Then I pulled out the original 85 ft run of 15-yr old RG-58 cable and replaced it with RG-6. Voila! Problem solved.

I then added another amp (an old amp I had laying around) to my south-facing (Milwaukee market) antenna (also up in the rafters) on the theory that I could combine the two signals (with a 2-1 splitter/combiner and no A-B switch) and let the digital receivers sort out the signals. Ta-dah! Two TV markets! This wouldn't work on analog, but it does perfectly on all five digital receivers I have (2 HDTV's and three satellite receivers).

Not quite as good reception as my mast-mounted rig, but no rotor to deal with. If it works as well this winter when the snow flies, I'll take down the mast rig and use that CM 7777 to replace the old amp.

Oh, and you don't need a weather-proof amp if you're willing to run AC power up to the rafters for the amp, but the CM 7777 is still the most powerful on the market.

    Superior product

Written By Craig, Manchester, NH on Tuesday, October 07, 2008

Is a superior amplifier. Allows the power supply to be safely stored away from the amp, which should be near the antenna. Powerful enough to drive all of the coax in my house. Without amplification, I was able to tune 3 channels. After adding this, I was receiving 24. Well worth the investment!!

    Significant digital reception improvement

Written By Thomas, Elkhart Lake, WI on Monday, October 06, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed a large mast-mounted UHF/VHF antenna according to antennaweb's recommendations. I'm deep fringe, but with no interference sources. Found I couldn't get certain digital channels, so I
went back to antennaweb to find in the small print that they also recommend an antenna amp for me. Bought a CM 7777 from Crutchfield and it made a huge difference. Now get every channel (including 37 digital). Most noticeable is that the directional sensitivity is much lower. I'll buy another now for another antenna I have mounted in my garage rafters.
