Blu-ray Disc players — the ultimate picture and sound

Blu-ray players deliver a better picture to your HDTV than any other available source. In fact, Blu-ray's 1080p picture is a perfect match for the 1080p screens found on most current TVs. Blu-ray movies also offer the most precise and realistic surround sound you can get. These players do a terrific job with standard DVDs, too — you'll see a cleaner, clearer picture with every disc in your collection. Many Blu-ray players can connect to the Internet for watching online movies from Netflix® and other video services.

Our take on the Samsung BD-P1600

by Loren Barstow

Kick your home theater system into high gear with the Samsung BD-P1600. This player outputs video at "Full HD" 1080p resolution, for exceptionally vivid, lifelike images from high-definition Blu-ray Discs — the best HD source available. You'll also enjoy master-quality surround sound, thanks to built-in decoding for "lossless" Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks.

Netflix, Pandora, and other online options
If you're a fan of Netflix®, Blockbuster®, YouTube™, or Pandora®, you can also use the 'P1600 to stream your favorite movies and music via your broadband Internet connection. Plug a 1GB thumb drive into either of the player's USB ports, and you can enjoy "BD-Live" — potential bonus features ranging from online games to downloadable movie trailers. Add the optional Wi-Fi® adapter, and you can take advantage of the 'P1600's online capabilities without the mess and hassle of running Ethernet cable.

Play DVDs and CDs, too
In addition to playing Blu-ray discs, the 'P1600 handles just about any other disc you may have. Pop in a classic from your DVD collection, or enjoy your favorite music CD. It also plays home-burned discs, plus those filled with MP3 tunes and JPEG digital photos.

Blu-ray Disc Overview: Blu-ray Disc (BD) is a new high-definition disc format designed to take advantage of today's high quality HDTVs. The resolution is up to 1920 x 1080 (1080p) and the data transfer rate is up to 40 mbps. Blu-ray Discs and players offer several advantages over the standard DVD format:

    • Better picture quality: Blu-ray Disc is a true high-definition format offering video at 720p, 1080i, 1080p, or 1080/24p resolution. While standard DVDs look very good on an HDTV, they don't provide a high-definition signal (not even when you use an up-converting DVD player). Blu-ray Disc delivers an extraordinarily sharp, clean, detailed picture, with deeper, richer colors.
    • Better sound quality: In addition to the same multi-channel sound formats you're accustomed to with DVD (Dolby Digital and DTS), Blu-ray Disc offers Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD, and uncompressed 5.1 channel PCM.
    • Much greater storage capacity: What makes Blu-ray Disc's superior picture and sound possible is the much higher storage capacity of Blu-ray Disc discs. A single-layer Blu-ray Disc can hold 25 gigabytes of data, over five times the amount a standard DVD can hold. Dual-layer Blu-ray Discs hold 50 gigabytes, which equates to nine hours of High Definition or 23 hours of Standard Definition video, plus high-resolution multi-channel audio and the added features and material that require multiple discs with standard DVD.
    • Compatibility with your current disc collections: To ensure backward-compatibility with your existing library of discs, Blu-ray Disc players use a dual-laser mechanism: a blue laser for playing high-definition Blu-ray Discs, and a conventional red laser for playing DVDs and audio CDs.

Note: As Blu-Ray technology continues to evolve, new disc types with enhanced functionality will become available. In order for you to enjoy this new functionality, you will likely be required to update the firmware in your player. These firmware updates will become available for downloading from the Internet.

AVCHD: The BD-P1600 will play home videos recorded in AVCHD. AVCHD (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264) is a high definition digital video camera format used to record in high definition or standard definition on a standard DVD.

MP3/JPEG Playback: The BD-P1600 supports MP3 (48kHz/320kbps) and JPEG playback from CD-R/RW and DVD-R/RW discs, plus a USB storage device.

Region Code: Like DVD, BD uses region codes. The region code on your disc must match the region code on your player, otherwise the disc will not play. The BD-P1600 is Blu-ray region A and DVD region 1.

Copy Protection: Blu-ray Disc uses the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) to prevent unauthorized recording of copyrighted material.

    Video Features

Graphic Interface: The BD-P1600 includes two individual HD resolution graphic planes (layers), one for graphics within the frame, such as subtitles, and one for interactive buttons; play movie, scene selection, etc. Because of Blu-ray's extremely high transfer rate and ability to preload data from the disc, the menu system can consist of several pages and can be accessed while the movie plays in the background. Some BD discs allow adjustable fonts, sizes, and colors for subtitles.

Video Up-conversion: When connected to your TV using the HDMI output the BD-P1600 scales the output of a standard DVD signal to HD-compatible 720p, 1080i, or 1080p. The unit also supports 480p and 480i output if your television is not HD-compatible.

Video Output: There are three types of video output on the rear panel; composite video, component video, and HDMI. The output resolution is adjustable as follows:

    • Video: The composite video output resolution is always 480i when playing Blu-ray Disc or DVD.
    • Component: When playing Blu-ray the resolution can be set to 480i, 480p, 720p, or 1080i; when playing DVD the resolution can be set to 480i or 480p.
    • HDMI: The output resolution can be set to 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i or 1080p when playing a DVD or Blu-ray Disc; also 1080/24p when playing a compatible BD.

1080/24p: Movies are typically filmed at 24 frames per second and some Blu-ray Discs use the same frame rate. If your TV will accept a 1080/24p signal, the BD-P1600 can pass the signal in its native form, without converting the video.

BD Wise: BD Wise is Samsung's latest inter-connectivity feature. When you connect Samsung products with BD-Wise to each other via HDMI, the optimum resolution will be set automatically.

TV Aspect: You can adjust the video output of the BD-P1600 to match the screen-type of your television. You can choose from 4:3 Letter-Box, 4:3 Pan-Scan, 16:9 Wide, and 16:9 Normal.

Picture Mode: This function enable you to adjust video quality when you are connected to a TV via HDMI. You can choose from Dynamic, Normal, or Movie.

Bonus View: The Bonus View feature provides picture-in-picture capability with select Blu-ray Disc titles. You can view addition content (such as director/actor commentary) in a small display window while the movie is playing.

Parental Lock: The Parental Lock function works in conjunction with Blu-ray Disc/DVDs that have been assigned a rating which helps you control the types of Blu-ray Discs/DVDs that your family watches. There are up to 8 ratings levels on a disc. The rating levels are protected by a customer user 4-digit password.

Dimmer: The unit's display offers three dimmer settings - Automatic, Dim, and Bright. The Automatic setting automatically dims the display during playback and brightens the display when stopped.

    Audio Features

Dolby Digital/DTS Surround Decoding: The BD-P1600 can decode the following Dolby Digital/DTS surround formats - Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby True HD, DTS HD High Resolution, and DTS-HD Master Audio (Essential). The player must be connected to a Dolby Digital/DTS surround AV receiver which also supports these same formats via optical or HDMI input.

Digital Audio Output: The Audio menu allows you to select the digital audio format that is passed through the optical and HDMI outputs:

    • PCM: Decodes Primary, Secondary, and Effect audio streams together into PCM audio using the player's optical or HDMI output.
    • Bitstream (Re-encode): Decodes Primary, Secondary, and Effect audio streams together into PCM audio, then re-encodes the PCM audio into DTS bitstream using the player's optical output.
    • Bitstream (Audiophile): Outputs only the Primary audio soundtrack (main soundtrack of the movie) so that your receiver can decode the audio bitstream sound using the player's HDMI output.
    • Down Sampling: Select this when the connected amplifier or pre-amp will not accept signals with a sampling rate of 96 kHz, 96 kHz signals are then down sampled to 48 kHz.

Dynamic Compression: When movie soundtracks are played at low volume or from smaller speakers, the system can apply appropriate compression to make low-level content more intelligible and prevent dramatic passages from getting too loud. This is only active when a Dolby Digital signal is detected.

    Internet Functions

BD-Live: BD-Live technology allows you to download and stream bonus content such as additional scenes, shorts, trailers, movie-based games, and more from a broadband internet and home network connections (fees may apply). The BD-1600 features an Ethernet port to connect to the internet via your home network and features two USB ports (front/rear) for additional storage. You can also connect to your LAN using the optional wireless WIS09ABGN LAN adapter (305LINK, sold separately).

Choose from any genre, performer, and even specific songs. You can listen and control your Internet Radio music from the BD-1600. If you already use Pandora, you can just log in to your account directly from the BD-P1600 and you are ready to go. If you don not have an account, you must create one initially.

    Remote Control

Multi-brand Remote: The supplied remote is pre-programmed to operate this unit and a number of functions on multiple brand TVs. Once programmed, the remote controls the TV's power on/off, input select, volume up/down, channel up/down, and mute.

Anynet+: Anynet+ is an AV network system that enables compatible Samsung components connected by HDMI cables to transfer command codes along with video and audio signals.

    Connections

HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface): The unit's HDMI version 1.3 output simplifies A/V connections by carrying video and digital audio all in one cable. This unit features HDCP copyright protection technology, and must be connected to an HDCP-compliant device. If your TV has a DVI input instead of an HDMI input, you can connect this unit to your TV using an HDMI-to-DVI adapter. You will also need to connect audio cables to the player because DVI is a video only cable. HDMI video can be output at 1080/24p, 1080p, 1080i, 720p, or 480p.

Component Video: The component video resolution can be set to 1080i, 720p, 480p, or 480i.

Composite Video: The composite output is always live and fixed at 480i; it can output video when playing a Blu-ray Disc.

Digital Audio Output: The Audio menu allows you to select the digital audio format that is passed through the optical digital output; bitstream (Dolby Digital or DTS) or 2-channel PCM.

Analog Audio: There is a pair of stereo RCA outputs for connecting the player to your television's analog audio input.

LAN: The rear-panel RJ-45 Ethernet port is used to connect to the internet for firmware updates and to access BD-Live, Internet Radio, and Netflix content.

Dual USB Ports: The USB type-A ports on the front and rear panel of the unit allow you to perform software upgrades using a USB flash drive. It can also be used to add more local storage for BD-Live content or playback of MP3/JPEG content. In addition you can connect to your network wirelessly using the optional proprietary Samsung Wireless LAN adapter (305LINK, sold separately).

    Not surprised it is discontinued

Written By Rebecca, Connecticut on Sunday, March 06, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love my Samsung TV, but this Blu-Ray player has been a disaster. After less than six months of fairly light use, it started refusing to play about two-thirds of the discs I tried in - all of which worked just fine in other machines in the house. The very brief warranty had already run out, of course, so now I'm stuck with it until I can save up for a new one (which will NOT be a Samsung).

On the positive side, it gets two stars instead of one because it did easily connect to the Internet and plays streaming Netflix with no problem. Which is a good thing because that's about all it does lately .....

Had a problem with another brand of player and exchanged it for this one and it
works great. Simple set up and it plays every disc that I put in it. Streaming
from Netflix works great as well. Very pleased.

    Wow from Wyoming

Written By Kelly, Worland, WY on Friday, February 19, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great little player for the buck. I've had it since the first of the year and it seems to work great. Some people don't like the little door cover, but I think it helps the player to become more aesthetically pleasing. We love it for Netflix, however, there are some Netflix movies that don't like it. It's only "hic-uped" on a couple of them. It's "hic-uped" on a couple of DVD's too, but turn it off and on again. . . no prolems after that. It's like any device with a processor, sometimes it needs to re-boot. We pared it with one of Samsung's 50" plasmas, so it was a great value and does and excellant job with Blu-rays. Thanks a lot CF!!! Who says there's no difference with 1080p? It's incredible. Would recommend it to anyone.

Decent player but a few issues

Written By Doug, Spokane, WA on Thursday, February 18, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall this is a decent player and a good value for the money, but there are two annoying issues with it:
    1) The remote is poorly designed. Sometimes the player has trouble receiving the signal from the remote and I have to repeatedly press the button to get it to respond. The layout of the buttons is also very poor and surprising for a Samsung product which are usually well-designed. When playing streaming Netflix in particular, trying to exit by to the main menu doesn't always work. There are three buttons which look like they should work, but it doesn't always do what you expect. The layout of these buttons is also very un-intuitive. For example, "exit" doesn't exit back to the Netflix main menu. Neither does "return" or "menu".
    2) The video connectors are only HDMI and Component, which is fine in most cases, but I have an older Samsung DLP HDTV that needs the signal to be S-video or composite in order to pipe the audio out to the headphones for listening in bed. Therefore I can't use this player on that TV -- very disappointing because I like the Pandora access on this player and would like to listen to that in bed. It would have been nice to have included at least an S-video connection.
Bottom line: I don't know if I would buy this player again. I would start by looking for one with more video output connections, that also included the Netflix and Pandora (or Slacker) features I like.

    Beware of Samsung DVD Players

Written By JEFF, Kansas on Sunday, February 14, 2010

I have this player and the P1590 player, both Samsung Blu-ray, and both are intermittent to where they wont send signal through HDMI cable to the TV. You get a black screen and no picture/sound to your TV 60-70% of the time. When new, they work fairly well, but after 90 days, watch out. They go downhill fast. Samsung won't acknowledge problems, want minimum or $85 to look at it. Go with Sony, Panasonic, Denon, Yamaha or others for Blu-ray. Samsung TV's can't be beat, but their dvd line is a joke.

    Good Value

Written By Dan, Belmond, Iowa on Sunday, February 07, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We bought this mostly to be a compliment to the PN50B650 TV. It interfaces very nice
with Samsung TV's and I have yet to have any issues with the player after 3 months of
use. I will say that blueray disks take some time to load but I'm not sure if that's an
issue with this player or blue rays in general.

For the money, I don't think you can go wrong with this player.

    Very Nice for the Price

Written By marklum, Bay Area, CA on Sunday, January 31, 2010

Overall: This is a great Blu-Ray player because it not only plays BDs (obviously), but it
also has the Netflix & Blockbuster download features built-in, Pandora radio (which I
have come to LOVE), and you can watch YouTube videos if you want. These are extras
you wouldn't necessarily expect from a player in this price range. I've had this unit now
for a about a month and a half and haven't had any problems with it. Some people have
complained about the flip-down console cover on the front of the unit, but it does not
    bother me.

Furthermore, the 1080p upconversion of regular DVDs is quite good. In fact, sometimes
when I'm watching a regular DVD I feel like I'm watching a BD.

If you are new to Blu-Ray, I would suggest this as a player to consider.

    Samsung BD-P1600

Written By SpanktorTheGreat, Michigan on Sunday, January 24, 2010

I've owned this player for seven months. It won't play blu-ray discs any more. Still works for dvd, pandora and netflix. The warranty covers parts only after six months, so I just bought a ps3. I would recommend buying a ps3 over all players.

Written By Matt, Mississippi on Tuesday, January 12, 2010

I purchased this blu-ray player to go along with my Samsung LN37B650 HD LCD tv that I got from Crutchfield. Although my PS3 has a blu-ray player, I wanted a stand-alone one simply to say I had one. It plays blu-ray movies in full 1080P and will upconvert standard DVDs in full 1080P as well. Setup was easy and connecting to the Internet was easy as well. I first connected using my LAN DSL line, then I purchased the Samsung Wireless adapter. All I had to was go to Network Settings (just like on my HD tv), choose wireless, it automatically finds the network, enter the password, and you're on to Youtube, Pandora, Netflix, and Blockbuster. Plus, I can use its remote or my HD tv remote to control both the tv and the blu ray player. Very nice feature. Samsung is the best for a reason.

Ok Let me start off with first I love Electronics, and keeping up with all the latest news. This includes being a subscriber to many magaziens, and trolling forums and Web sites DAILY (No exageration). Saying that I read ALOT of bad things about this player that really scared me on this player, But on Black Friday there was an increadibal sale on it and Although I love high end electronics I just cant afford it. i have been dreaming of being in the BD club for a few years now and my Wife said I could get it. Come Christmas Morn I set it up, ran the update wich took around 30 minutes, and checked out all the things things this thing dose. You tub is awsome, block buster is nice and CHEAPER than COX on-demand, Havent tried Pandoria yet, and I'm allready an Netflix subscriber. I also bought My first BD- Harry Potter and the half blood prince. WOW, I have a 720p Plasma and have been useing my XBOX 360 as my DVD Player so I didnt expect too much of an improvement-BOY was I WRONG. The Picture was WAY better, Sound was MUCH better, I even made a point at useing the Remote to open and close the doore becuase of the bad things I read about, well mine works flawlessly. It's the BEST $$$ I've spent in a LONG time. I was going to save my money for another year and get a DENON 2010, I'm glad I didnt becuase I'm very satisfied.

How did I live without this?

Written By Rodney, Helena, AL on Friday, December 25, 2009

Fast boot up and excellent picture quality. This is my first venture into
streaming to my tv and I couldn't be happier. Pandora is wonderful and set up in
only seconds. Netflix and YouTube would not connect to the internet at first.
After I turned the firewall off on my router everything works as promised. I
haven't rented a video from Blockbuster yet but the trailers are playing perfectly.

    Still not a brick

Written By MikeInNY, Saugerties, NY on Wednesday, December 02, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far, so good. On the Amanzon review site there are horror stories of this player becoming a "brick" when you upgrade the firmware. I ran a patch cable to my Internet router and it asked to upgrade. My Crutchfield rep said it should not be a problem - and it wasn't. Start the upgrade and walk away - it took about a half hour. I came back and powered it back up and everything was still fine. It plays DVDs beautifully (only my 2nd day and I still haven't seen it play a Blue-ray). I have a Netflix service and it was simple to start streaming to this player and the TV. I have a 1.5Mb/s DSL service and was worried about the throughput - but it worked fine. Quality rating was like 6/10. It seems less than half of the Netflix movies are able to be streamed, but it's still a nice option. I'll still get discs in the mail, but this offers another choice. Still haven't looked into the Internet radio. So given these new features, and the quality of the picture, (I also bought a Samsung 40-B630 - amazing picture compared with my old Sony CRT), this seems like a good way to improve the quality and ease of entertainment.

I couldn't be happier with my new Samsung Blu-Ray player; Samsung has always been a name brand that I trust as I move into the realm of high-definintion and Blu-Ray I couldn't be more pleased with the performance of this particular player as well as it's convenient and entertainment enhancing factor! The Blockbuster, Pandora and Netflix features are wonderful and make deciding to stay in for a movie a brilliant and exciting experience! No more deciding what to see -- it's all at my fingertips!

    Won't play CDs

Written By rickw, Los Altos , CA on Thursday, November 19, 2009

While it does a respectable job playing DVDs and Blu-Rays, it has trouble with music CDs. Roughly 1/4 of my music CD collection won't play: The tray opens back up, saying "This disk can not be played" (BTW music CDs that I burned myself do play.) I exchanged the unit for another one. Same result. I tried using the online Samsung support, and tried what they recommended. Same result.
So in summary: Good for DVD; Bad Bad Bad for music CDs.

This is my first experience with a BluRay player, or Samsung for that matter. It's been great, and I'm only beginning to explore the features of this player. Picture quality is superb, remote is intuitive and set up was easy. Good value for the money and as always, Crutchfield support is the best ever when questions pop up.

    Loving it!

Written By Jeremy, Stephens City, VA on Tuesday, September 22, 2009

This player is great! Hooked it up to my projector and it's outstanding. Love the USB Host on the back. I hooked up my digital camera and was able to project pictures from our family vacation right on the wall! Haven't hooked up the Internet connection just yet but am excited about the Pandora option - not a big Netflix user but plan to give that a shot also.

    Great player

Written By ghotiman, Dallas, TX on Monday, August 24, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Before I bought this player, I read the other reviews, but I'm not having
any of those problems. The door works fine, because I never open it by
hand. It opens and closes by itself, when I eject or insert the disc. The
display is fine because I don't read it, I read what it says on the TV. And
    the remote works fine.
The only problems I have are: a slight popping noise comes through when
it's on the opening screen, and nothing is playing, and I wish my Internet
connection was better so I can enjoy Pandora and Netflix more. Netflix only
goes about an hour before the picture freezes and the player says my
connection is unstable. Pandora only lasts about 20 minutes.
Something is wrong somewhere, and I'm not sure it's my connection. I'm
using a wire, not wireless, and my computer on the same router says I
have a fine connection at 3Mbps. I've called Samsung, and all they could
do was have me reset the player. Like telling me to reboot my computer,
    thanks for nothing, guys.
To make it worse, when this happens, I have to shut down and restart the
    player. This does get old.
I'll get a faster connection as soon as it's available where I live. Until then,
I hope Samsung fixes the restart problem and the popping noise.
Overall, this is a good buy, but I'll be sure to keep my firmware updated.
