Sound bar speakers: room-filling sound with less clutter

Add big sound to your TV without a roomful of speakers. Sound bars require minimal space and wiring, and their sleek designs complement today's flat-panel TVs. Most sound bars have their own built-in amplification, so you won't need to use a home theater receiver. Some models use advanced surround processing and carefully aimed speaker drivers to simulate the effects of a full home theater audio system.

Our take on the Sony HT-CT260

by Woody Sherman

Get sound worthy of your high-definition image

Your HDTV looks awesome. But when you turn up the volume, it doesn't really sound awesome. The reason for that? Well, because lots of people like their TVs to be as thin as possible while delivering a big screen size, the built-in speakers are tiny.

The Sony HT-CT260 powered home theater sound bar

The Sony HT-CT260 powered home theater sound bar fits in any viewing room

Easy fix

So how do we remedy this? Well, there are, as you might imagine, lots of choices, some involving lots of speakers and high-tech components (we sell those, too). But if you're looking for a great-sounding, two-piece, one-audio-cable solution, you don't need to look further than this powerful HT-CT260 sound bar from Sony. With 300 watts of amplification feeding the sound bar and subwoofer, it has the power to reproduce anything from a whisper to a cataclysm, and with its S-Force® PRO Front Surround sound technology, you'll feel enveloped by your entertainment.

Wire-free at last

Installation is simple. Much of the time, one audio cable from your TV will take care of the setup. And your music sources haven't been forgotten, either. The HT-CT260 is Bluetooth® capable, so you can stream your music from compatible smartphones, tablets, media players and computers. And speaking of being wireless, the subwoofer for this system is wireless as well. Simply install the transmitter/receiver modules in the sound bar and sub and watch as your options for subwoofer placement in your listening room expand.

Ready for the latest

The 'CT260 has built-in Dolby® Digital, DTS®, and Dolby Pro Logic® II decoding for exciting surround-like effects with just about any entertainment source. So take the next step and make your make your TV sound as good as its picture looks.

      Features

Overview: The Sony HT-CT260 Home Theater System is a two-piece surround sound system which includes an amplified soundbar speaker and a wireless powered subwoofer module. This two-piece home theater system brings simplicity and performance together by pairing an self-amplified soundbar speaker and a wireless powered subwoofer to create a surround sound experience in a compact and easy to install package. The HT-CT260 Home Theater System features Dolby Digital & DTS decoding, along with S-Force Front Surround; plus built-in Bluetooth. The HT-CT260 includes an IR remote control for wireless operation of the system.

Amplified Soundbar Speaker: The HT-CT260's soundbar speaker houses two full-range, cone-type oval (2.25" x 3.25") drivers in a bass reflex enclosure, powered by a 85-watt x 2-channel S-Master digital amplifier. The soundbar speaker acts as your home theater systems front and center speakers as well as giving you the effect that you have rear speakers positioned behind you. The soundbar speaker can be securely placed on a stand or shelf via its two integrated feet, or even wall mounted using its two rear-mounted keyhole slots (mounting screws sold separately). The soundbar speaker's keyhole slots are spaced 10-3/16" apart.

Wireless Powered Subwoofer: The HT-CT260 wireless powered subwoofer is equipped with a down-firing 5.125" cone-type woofer in a bass-reflex enclosure (down-firing port), powered by a built-in 130-watt S-Master digital amplifier. The wireless powered subwoofer gets its signal from the system's soundbar wirelessly, via the two included 5.8GHZ wireless transceivers (installed in the back of soundbar and subwoofer). The wireless powered sub can be placed virtually anywhere in your room. There are no extra audio cables to run; you do have to plug the powered sub into an AC outlet.

S-Force Pro Front Surround: S-Force Pro Front Surround provides realistic surround sound from this two-piece home theater system. Unlike other "virtual surround" technologies, rear sound is generated from the soundbar speaker using sophisticated digital sound processing and does not need to be bounced off of side walls. No matter what the size or shape of the room or what is on the wall, it is possible to hear sounds from behind you without needing to place speakers behind you. You can select from one of the following sound fields to optimize your surround sound experience.

      • Standard: Suits various sources.
      • Movie: Recreates powerful and realistic sound, along with clear dialogue.
      • Music: Suited for music programs or music videos on Blu-ray Discs/DVDs.
      • Game: Produces powerful and realistic sound, suited for video games.
      • Stereo: Suited for music CDs.
      • Portable Audio: Suited for compressed audio music programs from a portable source.

Note: You can set a different sound field for each input source.

Digital Surround Formats: The HT-CT260 supports the following digital audio formats.

      • Dolby Pro Logic II: Creates five full-bandwidth output channels from 2 channel sources.
      • Dolby Digital: All six channels in this format are recorded separately for superior channel separation.
      • DTS: Provides 5.1 discrete channels of high quality digital audio.
      • LPCM: Linear PCM 2-channel of 48kHz or less.

Digital + Analog Audio Inputs: The Sony HT-CT260 Home Theater System features both analog (minijack) audio and digital (optical/coaxial) audio inputs for connecting external audio sources such as your DVD player and CD player. There is single minijack (3.5mm) analog audio input, one optical (toslink) digital audio input, and one coaxial (RCA) digital audio input.

Audio Adjustments: The HT-CT260 home theater system offers various audio adjustments to customize your music or movie listening experience.

      • Speaker/Sub Level: You can adjust the level (+/-6dB) of the soundbar speaker and the powered subwoofer. This setting will be applied to all sound fields.
      • Bass & Treble: You can adjust the system's bass and treble independently from -6 to +6 dB.
      • A/V Sync: You can delay the sound using this function when the image is slower than the sound when you are playing a Dolby Digital/DTS source connected by a digital audio input.
      • Audio DRC: This feature narrows the dynamic range of a Dolby Digital/DTS sound track for enjoying movies at low volume.
      • Night Mode: You can enjoy sound effects and hear the dialogue clearly even at a low volume levels using this function.

Built-in Bluetooth: The Sony HT-CT260 Home Theater System features built-in Bluetooth (ver. 2.1+EDR) technology with A2DP/AVRCP.  You can wirelessly stream and enjoy music from your smartphone, PC, tablet, music player, or other Bluetooth-enabled devices through the Sony HT-CT260.

Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Sony HT-CT260.

Remote Control: The HT-CT260 comes supplied with a full-function IR remote control for wireless operation of the system. The remote can also control basic playback functions (Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Rewind, Previous/Next) for Bluetooth devices. In addition, the remote can be used to operate basic functions (Power On/Off, Volume Up/Down, Input) on select Sony, Samsung, LG, Panasonic, Vizio, Sharp, Toshiba, and Funai TVs.

Auto Standby: You can reduce the system's power consumption. The system enters standby mode automatically when you do no operate the system for approximately 30 minutes and the system is not outputting sound for approximately 30 minutes.

the best sony sound system I've ever owned

Written By padre, honolulu hi on Friday, May 17, 2013
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I originally ordered the Sony sound bar I did not expect the amount of bass and sound to come out of both component's. I replaced a older 5.1 Sony surround system. So far no complaints especially with the Bluetooth to play Pandora off of your cell phone. I would highly recommend this product.
      Pros:
Bluetooth, portability, sound projected from sound bar
      Cons:
      None

      Exactly What I Needed

Written By Nelsonrock, Menominee, MI on Monday, May 13, 2013
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fully Satisfied; The wireless subwoofer is 20 feet away and works perfectly; The set up is amazingly easy. The optical cord was long enough for my Sony 55" flat screen. The sound is great. If I was forced to nit pick, I would say the speakers lack a little in the mid-range. But you more than get your money's worth for the price.
      Pros:
Great sound; Easy set up; Wireless subwoofer
      Cons:
      Mid-range could be slightly stronger.

      Perfect for our living room

Written By Steve H., Edmond, OK on Saturday, May 11, 2013
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I read all of the reviews on Crutchfield and several on other websites, so I knew what to expect from the CT-260. It meets and exceeds my expectations. The sound is perfect for our living room, which is also open to our kitchen and dining area. Overall, the sound covers probably covers a 30' x 20' area. It's a SONY, so I knew it would sound crisp and clear, even at louder volumes (which it does). I don't have any problems with connecting to our LG TV using the remote. Then again, I'm also not trying to program everything to work together, using different remotes for the TV and speakers is not that big of a deal for me. I could see how some people are disappointed if trying to use this in a "home theater", but I think you need to be realistic in your expectations. On a side note, I also purchased the CT-150 (200 watt) SONY sound bar system for a smaller room, the CT-260 sounds a lot better and offers better features.
      Pros:
Sufficient power, crisp clean sound, wireless subwoofer, blue-tooth, contemporary design
      Cons:
      None

This a great sound bar! The sound is awesome and set up was a breeze! I have a medium sized living room and this sound bar fills it wonderfully. The wireless sub woofer paired itself automatically to the sound bar and really brings out the bass in movies.
      Pros:
Great sound. Easy set up. Looks good.
      Cons:
      None yet.

It's not a bad speaker but it just doesn't do enough for me for the price. I would just spend a Hundred or so more and get a bigger system with wireless speakers.
      Pros:
It was a good sound bar.
      Cons:
Not enough bang for the buck

      Excellent product. Easy to install.
      Pros:
Pretty easy to install. I used the digital optical cable and everything else was a matter of adjusting the different options with the remote control.
      Cons:
If your TV does not have optical digital capability, you need to order an additional RCA cable (red and white).

      Sony Soundbar

Written By Drew, DuPont, WA on Sunday, February 24, 2013
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fantastic sound and easy set-up. As mentioned in other reviews, the Optical cord is too short, but that's an easy item to replace. I use this with my main TV in my family room and it is a huge improvement in sound over the flat screen speakers. The Bluetooth streaming is awesome - I can play music from my phone without having to plug in to the system. Sound is clear and if you want to crank it up there is plenty of power with the subwoofer to rattle the walls. Highly recommend.
      Pros:
Easy to set up, great sound, wireless subwoofer, Bluetooth
      Cons:
      Optical cord too short

A Soundbar No One Can Dis!

Written By Hank144, Philadelphia, PA on Thursday, February 07, 2013
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit has fabulous audio and ample controls to set up to your taste. TV voice dialogue marvellously clear. Makes you want to get up & dance to the music you're playing. The cons below are just minor glitches and no great hassle.

No: if you've had a 5.1 or 7.1 six 0r 7 speaker surround system like we did in another house, you won't feel like you're on the Holodeck or the Enterprise engines rumbling around & beneath you, but you're not spending $1000+, running wires all over & filling up a space with all those speakers. So modify your expectations and you'll love this Sony.
      Pros:
Wireless subwoofer. Great bass! Blutooth. Analog input for MP3 players, etc. Optical audio connection.
      Cons:
No HDMI inputs. Optical connector that comes with it is a on the short side if you place it on furniture, instead of wall just below HDTV, esp if you run wires thru wall.. Remote control ergonomics not so hot.. Needed tech support-who solved problem- as after set-up sound was great but Sony unit completely disabled remote on our Panasonic Viera TV. User's manual could be clearer.

      Sony 260 soundbar

Written By KCML, Green Bay, WI on Tuesday, February 05, 2013
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just set it up in my shop yesterday, so I dont't have long term usage of the system. It is definitely better sound than the flat screen tv that it is paired with.
      Pros:
Easy to set up and operate. I feel if it were in a living/bedroom/family room situation of average size it would have plenty of power.
      Cons:
The system could use a little more power for my larger two stall garage/shop. As I stated in my review, it is much better than the tv speakers.

Great soundbar for a very reasonable price - better than the cheapies by far but didn't break the bank. Very easy install and the sound is great. Optical cable is very handy for connection to your set. Handsome unit that fits right in with my system.
      Pros:
      Easily installed and simple operation.
      Cons:

      HT-CT260

Written By Jerry G, Hemet, Ca. on Tuesday, January 15, 2013
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My hearing is degraded and my TV speakers are also poor quality, so was having a problem understanding a lot of TV speech. I read about the Product in C.U. I had never purchased from Crutchfield before but knew of their reputation from friends and reading. AND, they were having a sale on the sound bar. I bought on the Internet. The item was out of stock, BUT less than a week later I was notified that the item had been shipped. It arrived about 5 days later (free shipping Va. to Ca.). I had the system upand running within 1 hour of arrival. Music sounds GREAT. Still having a problem understanding some speech, but that's improved some, also. I will mount the Bar above the TV so it appears the Bar is part of the TV, using the four threaded Wall mount nuts on rear of TV wall and home made alum bars.
      Pros:
      High quality product. Easy setup.
      Cons:
      None.

Great product. Read the Consumer Report review and ordered after buying a new TV. Sound is over the top.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was not expecting this much from the small unit. Installed with optical cord in less than 5 minutes. The blue tooth feature is pretty cool when you want to listen to music from you phone or tablet. There are much better units out there but not at this price.
      Pros:
Exceptionally easy setup. Great looks, deep rich bass.
      Cons:
Would be much better if you could work volume on TV remote. Does work on cable remote but you need the smart tv remote to operate the TV features and unless you have a Sony TV your kinda stuck.

      Satisfied But Not Totally

Written By Mauiman, Maui, HI on Thursday, January 10, 2013
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am relatively satisfied with the Sony soundbar -- I realized it would not be as good as a true surround sound system. Having said that, the following things could be better. The dialog enhancement feature is in the "Night" mode for lower volume level listening. It is not too noticeably different than dialog clarity in the "Standard" setting. The digital optical audio cord furnished with the soundbar is only 1 meter long, probably only suitable if you are setting the soundbar directly in front of your TV. Soundbar would be more versatile if it had at least one HDMI input/output. Other than that, I am satisfied with the ease of set-up/installation and the sound quality. Haven't really had a chance to test it with a true surround sound blu-ray or 3D DVD yet so can't comment on how it performs. Streams music via blue tooth very well. Seems to work fine with a "universal remote". It has a nice appearance in our TV cabinet.
      Pros:
Sub-woofer can be set anywhere in the room where an electrical outlet is located. Less than 40" long Blue Tooth capable Looks good
      Cons:
No HDMI; Digital Optical Audio cord may be too short for many locations; Dialog enhancement could be better

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I received great advice from the Crutchfield representative. The Sony soundbar is working great, both with the TV and all of the related components and with any iPods connected directly to it. We are very pleased.
      Pros:
Sound quality, ease of use, enough inputs that matter
      Cons:
      None so far.
