Why install a car stereo with built-in GPS?

Imagine taking a trip as your car's receiver gives you directions, finds the best restaurant for dinner, and plays movies for your back seat denizens. Navigation receivers cover all the bases, with GPS guidance, DVD playback, and a host of other useful features. You can search through millions of points of interest to locate gas stations, restaurants, museums, and other interesting spots, wherever you are. Most receivers offer Bluetooth capability for hands-free calling, along with the ability to search through your iPod playlists with touchscreen controls.

Our take on the Clarion NX409

by Zak Billmeier

Put a multimedia station in your vehicle's double-sized dash opening. Clarion's NX409 navigation receiver gives you DVD playback and GPS guidance, along with a host of built-in and optional features. And its big 6.5" touchscreen lets you control your in-dash entertainment system with a tap of your finger. Enjoy watching DVDs up front while you're parked, or hook up a video screen in the back so the kids can watch movies as you drive.

Built-in GPS
No need to fumble with paper maps any more — read your navigation maps easily on the NX409's large screen, and you'll hear street names called out before your next turn. You can search the 12 million points of interest to find nearby attractions, plus dial in a 3D view to help you navigate city streets or changes in elevation.

Killer sound
The NX409 plays your store-bought and recordable CDs and DVDs, including those you've loaded with MP3 and WMA files. A powerful internal amp belts out your music with authority, while a premium digital-to-analog converter makes all your tunes sparkle. Three sets of preamp outputs let you add amps and subs to the mix, and the subwoofer volume control lets you dial in just the right amount of bass. Clarion includes a handy remote for on-the-fly changes.

iPod® controls and more
Connect your iPod to the rear USB slot, and you'll get touchscreen control over your tunes — no adapter required, but Clarion offers an automotive-grade cable that lets you keep the other one at home. Add an optional adapter, and you can play videos from your iPod on the 6.5" screen. You'll also find an audio/video input for video games or other sources.

Your options don't end there — add an optional satellite radio tuner and get the nearly endless variety of entertainment available from SIRIUS/XM. Plus you can add Bluetooth® for safer hands-free calling and high-speed music streaming.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

      Display Features

2-DIN Chassis: The Clarion NX409 has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double DIN" or size DD), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. Unlike many in-dash monitors, there is no hideaway box; all the inputs and outputs are included within the unit's chassis. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets. There is also an optional custom double-DIN sleeve (0202DBKT, sold separately) available for this unit that will allow you to mount the NX409 in a custom 4" opening. As always, please check the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to verify fit with your vehicle.

Note: This unit does not come supplied with a sleeve to euro-mount the radio.

6.5" Touch Panel TFT Display: The Clarion NX409 has an integrated 6.5" TFT wide screen display with touch panel controls. The display provides a high-resolution video monitor for watching your DVD videos. The screen has a resolution of 1200 x 234 and 280,800total pixels. The display features brightness and shape (4:3 or 16:9) adjustment. The unit's touch panel features interactive controls and video graphics, making menu navigation easy. An on-screen numeric keypad allows you to directly access titles and chapters of a DVD disc. The touch-screen surface is treated to resist dust and grime.

Parking Brake Detection: To prevent the displaying of video while the vehicle is in motion, the bright green wire in the supplied 18-pin harness must be connected to the vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. While the vehicle is in motion (parking brake off), you can still view all of the other displays and menus.

      Audio Section

24-bit D/A Converter: The unit's 24-bit D/A converter re-quantizes the 16-bit audio signals from CDs and DVDs as 24-bit data while maintaining the low distortion and high linearity of a 1-bit D/A converter. This allows an expanded dynamic range and clearer reproduction of subtle nuances, for a richer sound when viewing DVDs or listening to CDs.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the NX409 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the NX409 are as follows:

      • CEA2006 Specs: 18 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)

      • Loudness: compensates for low and high tones during low volume

6-Channel Preamp Output: The multimedia head unit is equipped with stereo front, rear and subwoofer preamp outputs for connecting the unit to an external amplifier. The subwoofer preamp output's level can be adjusted independently from -7 to +7 dB. The NX409 also features a low pass filter for the subwoofer preamp output. You can select between 80Hz, 120Hz or 160Hz.

MP3/WMA Playback: This unit can play MP3/WMA (32-320 kbps) files recorded on CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, and DVD+RW discs in Joliet, Romeo, or ISO 9660 Level 1 or 2 format. The player can recognize up to 8 hierarchical levels, 255 folders, 255 files per folder, and 512 total files. The head unit also supports ID3 Tag information which will display the title, artist, and album information when recorded on the disc.

This function allows cutting scenes that are unfavorable for children or replacing them automatically with other scenes prepared in advance. There are 5 levels of parental lock that are protected by a custom user 4-digit password.

      AM/FM Tuner: The Clarion NX409 is equipped with a built-in AM/FM tuner

Preset Tuning: The NX409 features three FM bands and one AM band that can hold six presets each, giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets. You can manually store your favorite presets or have the NX409 automatically store the strongest stations for you. The built-in AM/FM tuner also offers Preset Scan.

Navigation Software: Navigation data is pre-stored on the unit's 2GB internal flash memory for quick access and response. The NX409 provides map coverage of the United States and Canada. The Clarion NX409's integrated navigation software provides turn-by-turn visual and voice assistance to direct you to your selected destination. The built-in software quickly calculates step-by-step directions to any destination available on the included navigation map.

GPS (Global Position System): The navigation software uses Global Position System (GPS) satellites, and a digital roadway map database to calculate and display travel direction.

GPS Antenna: The system's supplied GPS antenna receives signals from a constellation of 24 satellite orbiting the earth and uses the strongest of signals to determine your position to within meters. The GPS antenna features a magnetic base and a 16.5' attached cable.

Vehicle Positioning: The built-in navigation software's computer considers vehicle speed an heading changes, together with longitude and latitude information, to accurately determine vehicle heading and position on a digital map. Signal from GPS satellites are used to determine the vehicle location. Three (good) or four (best) satellites must be receive to accurately determine location.

Map and Information Database: The integrated map database used by the built-in navigation software was created using high-resolution aerial and land based data collection.

Note: Car navigation maps are frequently updated. While this database was judged to be as accurate as possible at the time of its release, a map database can never be 100% accurate. Road information that is maintained in the map databases, such as turn restrictions or road names may change over time.

Voice Guidance: In addition to graphic directions, the NX409 provides voice guidance and turn-by-turn directions. You can select from English, French and Spanish audible languages. The volume of the voice prompts can be increased with increases in speed to overcome road noise. Voice guidance can be turned off if you prefer.

In 2D mode you can choose to orient the map in one of two ways; show North at the top of the screen, or show the direction in which you are heading at the top.

Route Priority: You can set the conditions for route calculation; fastest route, avoid freeways, shortest route, avoid toll roads, use ferries, auto reroute (creates a new route if you leave the original).

Does not fit 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe

Written By RT, Gilroy, CA on Wednesday, April 20, 2011
Installed in a 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe

First off, it did not fit my 2008 Tahoe like Crutchfield said it would. I had to cut
the plastic bracket from the factory radio in order to be able to force it in. I was
not able to attach any of the extras other than the navigation cable because
they hit the metal bar behind the stereo. Second, the steering wheel adaptor
that they offer with this radio only goes up to 2006 model Chevrolets so that
was a waste of time. The radio itself is a good device, the only bad thing about it
was that the radio frequency seemed to diminish and most stations were
      staticky.

      OK.... BUT....

Written By Mark, Alton, IL on Wednesday, October 27, 2010
      Installed in a 2004 GMC Sierra 2500/3500
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The biggest complaint I have is the Nav unit map was over 1.5yrs old when I recieved the
unit. There is very little info out there on how to update this. I went to the teleatlas
website and it didn't even list this unit.

The Ipod interface is frustrating and doesn't allow you to shuffle songs.

There are little quirks with the interface as well. a lot of the settings revert back to old
settings when you turn you car back on (and yes I have it wired correctly so I don't lose
power to the memory when the car is off). Clock uses the GPS to set the time and is
always 5hrs off of CST for the first 30 seconds to 60 seconds then finally updates to the
      correct time.

Its not a terrible unit, but could have been a ton bettter with better software. The sound
      quality is pretty good.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had this unit for about 6 months. The sound quality is awesome. The ability to put
MP3s on a flash drive and play them is worth the money. The DVD player works great
      and haven't had any problems.

Watch that the screen can be mounted in a straight or facing slightly down position. I
have an 06 Tacoma and the unit faces up slightly. This means when the sun is coming
in the windows I can't see the screen at all.

The GPS is not the best. Hopefully an update to the software will fix some of the issues.
It is slow and hard to navigate the menu.

      Poor Product

Written By pspay01, Fairview, NJ on Sunday, July 25, 2010

Bought this product 8months ago - Here is whats happening:

      1) Unit erases settings, time, presets, etc on its own.
      2) Navi is very slow
      3) DVDs freeze up
      4) Navi gets directions confused (tells you to make left when means make right)
      5) Screen shifts like there is some sort of power issue.

I recommend that you find another product. This product was poorly designed...

I've had this unit installed for about a week. I've had none of the problems I read about in the reviews. The GPS works great and the sound is excellent. It's better than I expected. I got the steering wheel control which works fine. The only problem is it scrolls through the preset radio stations, but doesn't actually change the station.

      2 units still problems

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The first unit I got had a major problem, it wouldn't play any optical media or connect to USB sources. Crutchfield RMA'd it, I put in the replacement unit, much better. The clock has a mind of its own if you don't sync it to GPS. The user interface is slow to navigate and it doesn't automatically dim with my lights like I thought it would. Navigation is actually better than expected. Its about as accurate as anything else I've used. Nothing has ever recognized my address, this doesn't either. The graphics are somewhat ugly, but it has an excellent signal even in the garage, and the antenna is on my dash!!! I wish Sirius would do that.

The nail in this unit is that now after 3 days installed, its started to flicker. The upper right hand corner of the screen looks like its pulsing. It could be a power issue, but since this is the only thing I've upgraded, I can't see how my car is pumping out enough power.

Also very aggravating is that the unit doesn't have any kind of eq. Just a basic bass and treble adjustment!!! I've never had an aftermarket head unit with so little adjustment.

There is nothing inherently wrong with this unit considering its price but i really miss my Pioneer AVIC-700BT (Nav only). Map graphics are circa 1999 and DVDs stop playing randomly.... if you have the money step up to a higher quality unit but if you need Nav on the cheap this is your best bet

Has Its Problems... But Still A Good Deal

Written By Anonymous, Plattsburgh, NY on Wednesday, June 16, 2010
Installed in a 2010 Subaru Forester
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall, I'm pretty happy with this unit. I put it in my 2010 Forester, because I wasn't willing to pay $2200 for the factory GPS that didn't even include anything extra. This was the lowest priced unit i could find that offered GPS and Sirius.

GPS: It's a bit slow, and not entirely accurate. It gets set on one route and freaks out if you take another route. I use it sometimes to track my mileage, and it often directs me to the more complicated way. GPS signal is still at full strength even with the antenna inside the dash. A note on the volume of the voice: when the GPS is talking, turn the volume knob. This adjusts the volume of the voice.

Sirius: Biggest problem with the unit. It constantly and randomly erases all my presets for no reason, which gets really irritating. It seems to cut out a lot as well even with minor sky interference.

iPod: One of the few units that doesn't require you to get a special adapter or cord. Plug in any standard iPod USB cord and it interfaces with it. Definitely a nice feature!

Backup Camera: Another nice feature. Switches automatically to the camera when you put it in reverse. Use the purple and white wire off the harness, which is not marked in the manual.

Other: The blue backlighting behind the volume button is pretty bright at night. I added on a steering wheel button adapter, which doesn't work too good, but I think it's the adapter itself and not the unit.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It works. That's about the only good thing I can say about this unit.

I have never had a CD player of any kind that always put a delay between tracks with no
way to turn that feature off. I own a lot of CDs where the tracks segue into each other,
and having that pause every time is a major nuisance. It plays MP3 CDs - most of the
time. Occassionally, however, it will "read error" and skip a track for no apparent reason.
I haven't tried the USB connectivity yet, but my hopes have been dashed by mediocre
      performance so far.

The GPS is about the same. It kinda works most of the time. I put in an address and it
got me as far as the correct road before giving up and failing to find the number. It also
does not adapt quickly to city conditions. I tried to get home from the mall, and it didn't tell
me to turn left until I was sitting at the light in the right lane - too late!

Overall, it works as a multi-purpose unit, but "it works" is about the best I can say.

I replaced my JVC double din with this Clarion and unbelievable difference in sound. GPS is very easy to use and very accurate. Volume control knob is kinda small. Great control of sound thru menu and EQ settings. I have it in my Nissan Frontier fit is great.
      Great buy, thanks crutchfield

      Great Touch Screen w/ NAV!!

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you want a touch screen unit that has almost everything you need or want, this is it. Minus the bluebooth, which i did not want, this is an exceptional unit for the price.
The GPS aquires satellites quickly and accurately displays where you are at. I've read reviews that say the GPS lags behind, but I don't find that to be true. The voice prompting you to turn is a little on the low side, but you can still hear it fine.
The IPOD feature is also great. You can just use the cord that came with your IPOD to hook it up to this unit. It charges your IPOD and is quick to load songs. Toggling between songs could take a little bit if you are going between artists/songs that are separated by alot of letters. There is a keypad function that will quicken things but you have to have an idea of what number that favorite song is at. For example if you are listening to a song that starts with an A, and want to go to one that starts with a S, open keypad, type number (ie 150) and it displays songs 150-155. Overall this is not even a problem.
The FM/AM radio part works great with a ton of pre-select options. There is no problem getting signal.
The DVD also works great with a clear picture and loads quickly.
Blue is the only color illumination this radio has and is not a deal breaker in my mind.
In the future I am going to expand and add a back up camera and Sirius Satellite radio.
Again for the price and performance, this Clarion NX409 can't be beat.

      Great Buy

I brought this deck about 3 weeks ago, and I LOVE it. I brought it on sale an the only different between this model an the NX509 is the built in bluetooth feature. If you own a Toyota Truck I suggest you buy this deck. It's fits like a glove in the dual deck area with no problems with installation. The only bad thing that I could say about this deck is the voice navigation is very low, but you really don't need it due too the 3d overview, and the veritcal display of were you right then. The refresh rate from diverting from the orginal path is no less than 15 or 20 seconds. This is a great buy for your money. The 4 pre-amp at 18 watts is great enough ,so that, I didn't need an additional amp for my door speakers which I upgraded all my speakers to Polks. I only need to turn the deck volume too no more 25 max before the bass is more than I can bare. I also, have Polks type 1 speakers in a Q-logic box. The highs from the door speakers, and the box bass is more than enough sound without taking up any space in a truck that has very limited already.

      Pros:
DVD / Navi for a great price!!
      Ok quality screen

      Cons:
      Horrible Glare in Daylight
Switching through artists in Ipod mode is worthless, scrolls way too slow up and down artists choices, so for example to get from Aerosmith to GreenDay you cant just hold the button down, you need to individually push the button 40 times to get through all the artists between A - Z . if that makes any sense lol.

      Big improvement

Written By Selwyn, Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, April 07, 2010
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off, Crutchfield technical support is the BEST. The service is invaluable completing
the installation. For instance, this unit had a long purple wire on the harness that was
undocumented. The technician told me what it was for and where to connect it and viola!
now when the car is in reverse, the back up camera turns on, the unit automatically
switches to the rear camera view and switches back when out of reverse.

The unit itself is a big improvement over the stock unit. The iPod connector will control
and charge my iphone 3g no problem (get a usb extension cable).

The sound is very good, keeping in mind that I am just an average listener. The volume
      is more that sufficient.

DVD playback is fine. The screen is not super high resolution, but passes for being in a
      car. Load time is fine.

The touchscreen works well and responds quickly.

The only aspect that is a bit troublesome is the GPS. It picks up the signal fast and
accurately. The voice is indeed a bit mechanical and has some pronounciation issues...
but not a deakl breaker. The real issue is inputing the destination. I hope it just takes
practice and becoming more familiar. Often it was give me a 'none found' when I was
trying to find a POI. The screen resolution is passable.... could be better though. The
initial Nav screen says to check a website for map updates (no mention in the manual).

      Happy so far!

      Great Price, Great Deck

Written By Kevin, Hillsboro, OR on Tuesday, April 06, 2010
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got an open box of this deck, and I had it installed this weekend, with the Sirius attachment, so I've only used it for four days. I have seen one minor issue (minor in my eyes), but overall, it's been outstanding. For some reason, it's not saving the presets for the tuner. It saves my presets for Sirius fine, and my location in a DVD, but not the tuner presets. I haven't really messed around with it too much to try to determine why. Even with my previous stock deck and satellite radio unit, I never listened to terrestrial radio anyways. With Satellite, DVD and iPod, it takes an even further back seat.

You could also list the screen washout in sunlight as a negative, but I will not subtract anything from the score for that. LCD screens are difficult in sunlight as it is. They are a very reflective surface. I can still read it fine, it's just not as crisp and vibrant. Even on a 1500.00 deck, washout is to be expected.

      Features:
Satellite Radio: Works great, gets wonderful sound compared to the FM modulator I was using before. My only complaint is that you can't surf by title to see what is on each individual station, you have to tune to the station to find out. Again, this may be my newness with the unit, though.

      Great Head Unit

Written By Anonymous, Lake City, Fl on Monday, April 05, 2010

I will say, this is an amazing head unit. Looks good, and the features are amazing. It only got 4 stars for two reasons. 1) The navigation system needs a little bit of updating; however, is a nice nav. system. I have not had any issues other than the occasional wrong street name or missing street, but it's not common. 2) The headunit will not integrate with my Microsoft Zune via USB. Clarion REALLY needs to make their headunit Zune compatible.

I'm not sure why some comments talk about long load times. Mine has not had this issue. Further, people have complained about not being able to edit routes or enter routes while driving without a bypass. I have not had this issue. The only function that will not work while driving is the DVD player.

Further, It took me only an hour to wire up the DVD player to the crutchfield harness and have the unit installed. It was so simple an idiot could do it. The wires on the harness were even color coded with the headunit. I used quick connects just in case I ever wanted to disconnect the unit (for who knows why). I do wish the unit would work with my existing Sirius receiver instead of me having to buy a new one.

      Not All That

Written By Maureen, Texas Panhandle on Saturday, March 27, 2010

I was impressed with the appearance and fit of the Clarion NX409, but problems were
evident from the beginning. The unit has a beautiful appearance; it fit flawlessly in the
space provided. I tried to adapt for 90 days, but ended up exchanging for the following
      reasons:

CD: The sound was good, but every now and then it would blank out and come back on
      a few seconds later.

Radio: Reception was horrible; I could not get more than one station at home,
continually scanned without hits in the scan function, so I had to manually go through
the dial to find stations. The technicans stated that that was not a common complaint.

Navigation: THE WORST. Updated too slowly, sound function was poor, and the voices
for voice prompts were difficult to understand at best. Street/City pronounciation was so
bad that it was impossible to decipher what the actual street/city name was and it forced
you to look at the screen, where the street names and numbers were to small to read at
      a glance.

I did not use the other functions that were available, maybe it would have changed my
opinion of the NX409, but, I doubt it. It's pretty. That's all.
