Our take on the MTX Thunder564

High-level performance is what MTX amplifiers are all about. The sound pros at MTX subject each Thunder amp to rigorous bench testing before they'll let it ship, and they pack each model full of features designed with you, the music lover and audio enthusiast, in mind.

The Thunder564's versatile 4-channel design makes it ideal for a variety of applications, from powering four full-range speakers to driving a pair of subwoofers. You get plenty of power, plus variable crossovers that keep your speakers operating at peak efficiency. ThunderEQ lets you boost the bass up to 18 dB at 40 Hz. Preamp outputs make it easier to add another amplifier to your system.

Heavy-duty, nickel-plated terminal block connectors promote effective transfer of current into the amp. Inside, high-powered transformers and patented PWM MOSFET switching power supplies give you maximum output for dynamic sound from your speakers. Intelligent Surface Mount Design ensures greater stability and low noise levels. What does all that technology mean to you? Clean, tight music, no matter how loud you like it.

Highlights:

  • 70 watts RMS x 4 at 4 ohms
  • 140 watts RMS x 4 at 2 ohms

MTX Thunder564

Written By MICHAEL, Ooltewah, TN on Sunday, January 29, 2006

After a lot of research, I chose the MTX Thunder564 becuase it represented the best value I could find on a car amplifier. It even came with a certificate filled out and signed by a 'human' stating measured power output and THD.

Having worked as a car audio seller and installer for seven years, I appreciated the no-nonsense clearly lableled controls, inputs and outputs. During installation, I didn't even need the owner's manual.

I am driving a pair of Polk db6500 and a pair of Polk db650's in parallel off of 2 stereo channels, and a Polk GNX-10 sub off of the other two bridged mono. As this amp can suck a lot of juice at full output with arrangement, I also bought (and recommend) a 4G power distribution kit for this amp.

It's not all good though. The high frequency detail is not the best I've ever heard, a little edgy at low-to-normal levels and breaking up a bit at higher levels (I know what clipping sounds like, and an not clipping the amp). The low freq performance of this amp is very good-to-excellent, and the mids are generally smooth, but lack articulation in the upper registers. Some of these qualities could be aggravated my Polks or speaker location in my Honda Pilot.

With that said, considering that most amps this price and quality have 30 watts x 4, the excellent balance between power output, price and sound quality earn this amp 5 stars in my book.

BEST DEAL ON AMPS!

Written By Aaron, Manitowoc, WI on Tuesday, December 06, 2005

I Installed this amp with a factory GM headunit and 4 Kenwood Excelon speakers. At first listen I was shocked to hear such clarity coming out of a factory stereo. The Thunder offeres all the functional useful options I need, like a pre-out, bass boost, and knobs that don't require a screwdriver. I wish it had speaker inputs- woulda saved me from alot of headache. At current $199 price its a great deal vs. original pricetag. Mfg. in 2002 but it still competes with current models. Buy it now!

This is a great amp for an unbelievable price. Sound is clear and smooth, and looks really sleek. It's super easy to tune as well. I also like how the speaker, remote, battery, and ground cables are on the same side. Makes it really easy to install. You can't go wrong with this powerful 4 channel amp.

This is a nice amplifier with strong power output and clean sound. I am using it to power my front and rear speakers. The dials for adjusting the gain, eq, and crossovers are very easy to use. You can actually turn them without the small screwdrivers that are typically needed. This amplifier is a great bargain at $199 dollars.

Of course it's great- it's made in Phoenix!

Written By Karl, Scottsdale, AZ on Monday, July 04, 2005

This amp simply kicks! It was like Christmas opening the box and there was an extra surprise within. This amp was rated at 410 Watts before it left the shop. I just got done with the underseat install. Instructions are clear, wiring makes sense and I can't wait to get in there and fine tune the thing. This is the first time I've installed a system and can only say thanks, Crutchfield- thanks, Marie... you all did me great! Thank you.
