Alpine

Our take on the Alpine PXA-H100 IMPRINT™ Audio Processor

by Ken Nail

Many cars have acoustic problems that interfere with an in-dash receiver's ability to produce clear, well-balanced sound. Your receiver's equalizer may help, but Alpine offers a better way. The PXA-H100 IMPRINT Audio Processor plugs into the Ai-NET input on most 2008 Alpine receivers, analyzes your vehicle's acoustics, and uses the MultEQ feature developed by Audyssey Labs to adjust the receiver's output for the best possible audio performance.

Easy to use
In order to use the IMPRINT, you'll need to purchase Alpine's KTX-H100 tuning kit. Connect the microphone from the KTX-H100 tuning kit, then load the supplied software onto your laptop PC. Use the the included USB cable to connect your PC to the PXA-H100, then use the software to tailor your sound.

Automatic adjustment
The PXA-H100 analyzes over 500 soundwave points to produce a perfectly corrected sound curve for your vehicle and then saves it safely in its memory. The entire tuning process only takes about 10 minutes. You can use the PXA-H100 with your Alpine's built-in amplifier or with external amps in your system.

Sonic toolbox
If you want to get hands-on, the PXA-H100 also features a 5-band parametric or 7-band graphic equalizer, manual crossover controls, and manual 6-channel time-correction controls as well. The PXA-H100 provides a pass-through connection, so you can still add other gear to the Ai-NET bus. It also adds three sets of 4-volt preamp outputs plus Alpine's sound-correcting MediaXpander function to your receiver.

Highlights:

  • audio processor for use with most 2008 Alpine Ai-NET receivers
  • IMPRINT sound technology adjusts receiver output to match vehicle acoustics
  • manually adjustable 5-band parametric or 7-band graphic equalizer
  • high- and low-pass filters
  • MediaXpander restores sound quality lost during recording or transmission
  • 6-channel, 4-volt preamp outputs (front, rear, subwoofer)
  • requires Alpine KTX-H100 tuning kit for full functionality
  • warranty: 1 year
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

    Sound Processing

Imprint: By adding this PXA-H100 Imprint box and the KTX-H100 tuning kit (item number 500KTXH100) to a compatible Alpine head unit (with Ai-NET), a car's inherent acoustic shortcomings can be overcome with the MultEQ feature. Imprint also gives you much more sound adjustment flexibility as detailed below.

MultEQ: MultEQ, developed by Audyssey Labs, automatically optimizes the audio for the listening environment inside your vehicle. The Imprint box and tuning kit include the hardware, software, and microphone necessary to measure multiple positions in the car and capture frequency and time domain information from the vehicle's actual acoustical environment. Once the car's speaker location delays are measured, along with the frequency peaks and dips caused by the absorptive and reflective materials in the interior, MultEQ creates a set of equalization filters to correct the frequency response and time domain problems for each speaker in the vehicle. It also removes sound distortion caused by the specific acoustical problems in the vehicle by applying unique FIR filters, using more than 500 points along the frequency spectrum per channel. This optimizes the sound reproduction to the specific vehicle listening environment with much greater precision than can be achieved using typical graphic or parametric equalization. The result is a more accurate soundstage and smoother, more natural sound optimized to match your vehicle.

Equalizer: 10 typical equalizer settings are preset at the factory for a variety of musical source material. You can select from - Flat, Pops, Rock, News, Jazz & Blues, Electrical Dance, Hip Hop & Rap, Easy Listening, Country, and Classical. The head unit will also save six custom EQ curves you create by adjusting the units built-in EQ. Choose the parametric or graphic EQ:

    • 5- Band Parametric EQ: The built-in Parametric EQ allows you to adjust the following 5 frequency bands in 1/3 octave steps from -6 to +6 dB at a bandwidth Q factor of 1, 1.5, or 3
      • Band 1: 20 Hz to 80 Hz
      • Band 2: 50 Hz to 200 Hz
      • Band 3: 125 Hz to 3.2 kHz
      • Band 4: 315 Hz to 8 kHz
      • Band 5: 800 Hz to 20 kHz
    • 7-Band Graphic EQ: The built-in Graphic EQ allows you to adjust the following 7 frequencies from -6 to +6 dB
      • Band 1: 63 Hz
      • Band 2: 150 Hz
      • Band 3: 400 Hz
      • Band 4: 1 kHz
      • Band 5: 2.5 kHz
      • Band 6: 6.3 kHz
      • Band 7: 17.5 kHz

Crossover: The active crossover can be used as a 2.2 channel (3-way; low-pass subwoofer, band-pass midrange, high-pass tweeter) or a 4.2 channel (2-way; high-pass front and rear, low-pass subwoofer). A crossover limits the frequencies delivered to a given speaker, so you send only the frequencies for which the speaker is well suited. The crossover adjusts the high pass filter or low pass filter of each band along with the slope and output level. You can adjust the following crossover settings:

    • 4.2 Channel:
      • High Pass Filter: the front and rear outputs are individually adjustable; crossover from 20 to 200 Hz in 1/3 octave steps with a slope of Flat, 6, 12, 18 or 24 dB/oct, additionally you can adjust the output level from -12 to 0 dB
      • Low Pass Filter: the subwoofer output can be stereo or mono; crossover from 20 to 200 Hz in 1/3 octave steps with a slope of Flat, 6, 12, 18 or 24 dB/oct, additionally you can adjust the output level from -12 to 0 dB
    • 2.2 Channel:
      • Tweeter/High Pass Filter: crossover from 1 kHz to 20 kHz in 1/3 octave steps with a slope of 6, 12, 18, or 24 dB/oct, additionally you can adjust the output level from -12 to 0 dB
      • Midrange/Band Pass Filter: a band pass has both high pass and low pass filters; HPF 20 to 200 Hz in 1/3 octave steps with a slope of Flat, 6, 12, 18 or 24 dB/oct; LPF from 20 Hz to 20 kHz in 1/3 octave steps with a slope of Flat, 6, 12, 18 or 24 dB/oct, additionally you can adjust the output level from -12 to 0 dB
      • Subwoofer/Low Pass Filter: the subwoofer output can be stereo or mono; crossover from 20 to 200 Hz in 1/3 octave steps with a slope of Flat, 6, 12, 18 or 24 dB/oct, additionally you can adjust the output level from -12 to 0 dB

Time Correction: The time correction feature delays the audio signal to the speakers closer to the listener. This effectively creates a perception of increased distance for those speakers. Time Correction allows the listener to be placed at an equal distance from all speakers for optimum staging. You can adjust the distance of each speaker and subwoofer (6-channel) to the listener from 0 to 132.7 inches.

Media Xpander: The MX (Media Xpander) function makes vocals or instruments sound distinct by restoring sound quality typically lost during recording or transmission; this function helps restore audio information that becomes obscured when audio is compressed. The MX function can be applied to all sources, except AM radio. There are three settings and each source can have its own setting.

    Amazing difference

Written By Tommy, Phoenix, AZ on Wednesday, February 13, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I agree if you are not happy with it, you have hooked it up incorrectly. I didn't have a bit of problem getting it hooked up and functional. If you are having problems with the bass not being there, tune it with the sub turned down halfway. Also turn off imprint and manually adjust the subwoofer settings, I run mine in reverse phase because the bass is tighter. Once you set your "manual settings" turn imprint back on. As for running imprint software, I ran mine on windows 7 and I didn't have any problem and was able to do all 6 calculations. Night and Day difference in sound it does exactly as advertised and at a great price.
    Pros:
Easy to install it / Price / Features / built in crossover, EQ and DSP / Imprint tuning
    Cons:

    PXA H-100

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this expecting for a dramatic differance in sound quality, If you like flat lifeless music than this is the unit for you. The auto tune does just that it makes a flat lifeless curve . Luckly there is an option to manualy adjust the sound curve a 5 band parametricEQ and a 7 band graphic EQ with active x- overs and media expander wich works great . But i mainly bought this for the imprint auto tune and was very dissapointed thats why i give it one star, if you want a small mount any where unit with active xover and EQ options than i give it four stars , I would give it five stars if you would still be able to adjust the bass and treble, but once installed you can only adjust subwoffer level
    Pros:
Small can mount any where , media expander works great
    Cons:
Imprint auto tune is a dissapointment leaves a flat lifeless curve , Cant adjust bass and treble once installed only sub level

    Not Compatible

Written By neilfl, Lafayette, La on Monday, July 16, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Pleease check your head unit for compatibility. Crutchfield is currently showing this product as a recommended accessory but if your HU does not support Ai-Net cable connection it will not work. It looks like Alpine has stopped shipping HU's with Ai. This looks like all newer models but I'm not certain. I was told by Alpine support that the newer HU's will have sound processing built in so there's no longer a need for this unit. They also said if I need sound processing I can go for the H800 which is expensive, no thanks. I've purchased this unit but have to return it as I have reciently discovered that it will not work with my HU. I'm giving four stars because I have to give a rating. I can say that the directions are very vague.

    Wow

Written By Tee, Youngsville, LA on Friday, June 15, 2012

Sound after calibration was awesome. I'm hearing notes I didn't heard before from my system. I was speechless. Like the rest reviews, you will lose some decibel but don't worry that's what gain is for on ur amps. I don't know what the other reviews saying about bass. Imprint actually made my bass clearer. It's making my 12in type-r transiting bass notes I never knew it can do.
    Pros:
    Clean house on your soundstage.
    Cons:
Software. You will need winxp but u can run it in xp mode if u have vista or 7. Limited tuning if ur running the imprint curve but for me it didn't need much after calibration.

OK but the auto calibration doesn't produce

Written By Mike, Georgia on Wednesday, March 21, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the Imprint a 1 1/2 year ago. I've worked with it a number of times with the auto calibration. I've yet gotten it to sound better than when I adjust manually. The auto adjustment kills the bass from the sub (I read the reviews about cutting the sub output down during calibration) and drops the sound stage down in my car. I also could never get it to do 6 position calibration settings. The software crashed every time. It could be because I was using WinXP in a VM ('cause I only have Win7 and you can't buy WinXP anymore). I talked to Alpine about an upgrade to the system and got no indication that would happen. The sound (with auto calibration) seems to be coming from a well and because there is no way to make any adjustments you either live with it or go manual mode.

Manual mode is the way I've gone. Making the time adjustments are probably the biggest plus for this device. After the time adjustments and a few minor tweaks to the EQ settings I have a sound stage that is centered and about chest high (which is what I was going for). Sounds pretty good now but I know it could sound better, just to difficult with this system.

I would say that the time adjustments are the plus for this device. And I am looking at the JBL system to see if that will do any better. Hardware: Alpine 9886 JLAudio C5 front JLAudio VR Rear JLAUDIO 10W6v2 (sealed) JLAUDIO 500x5 slash

Music - not Rap, most anything else
    Pros:
    Time adjustments Manual EQ settings
    Cons:
    Auto calibration Software requirements (WinXP)

    PXA-H100 Imprint

Written By John B, Cary, NC on Wednesday, January 11, 2012

Paired with a Alpine CDA-105, Polk Momos up front, low end Alpine 6.5" in the rear and an amplified factory sub in a 2004 Honda Pilot. Best Buy installed and I performed the sound configuration. Very easy overall. Takes an hour or so to do it right. Day vs night improvement in sound stage and frequency response. Bass lag gone. Make sure you follow directions re: bass amp cross-over settings.
    Pros:
Dramatic improvement in sound stage and more even frequency response

Best money I spent for my system. It sounded good before but after running the test it really makes the music stand out. Magic!

Most improved was the god awful Satellite radio sound. Although still not great it improved it to the point of bearable. Sirius really needs to fix this and stream music and an improved bit rate. CD's and properly ripped MP3's sound perfect.

Written By SJC, San Jose, CA on Sunday, July 10, 2011

I am not sure if the Imprint was really worth it for my 2005 Tundra with factory JBL audio. I have it connected to INA-W910. The tuning took out nearly all of the bass out of the music. I think it sounds better with the imprint curves off and use one of the EQ settings instead. More tuning maybe required.

In my 2003 Honda Civic with factory speakers and Alpine IDA-X305SBT, the imprint is definitely worth it. Itsounds so much better with the Imprint than the EQ settings.

    Better than some people think

Written By Bill, PA on Friday, May 13, 2011

I added the IMPRINT to my CDA-117 in a Scion xA because there were some serious
peaks and valleys in my sound, mostly brought on by the cars' horrible
acoustics, not the level of components. Installation is a bit of a pain, and
the tuning process is a bit long, however, as they say, Rome wasn't built in a
day and I completely expected most of it. Once the tuning process was done, I
listened to it for about 10 minutes and went to bed. The following day on my
way to work, I really put it through its paces, and I'm very impressed. My
soundstage went from being A-pillar to A-pillar to being past my left rear view
mirror and wrapping all the way around to past the passenger A-pillar. It also
got rid of the major peaks and valleys in my system, which was a major plus.
The subs also roll off in to the mids much better which is very nice.

There are some very small issues that would have made it a 5 out of 5, the lack
of instructions for one. Did you know that there are dip switches on the bottom
of your Alpine to tell it you've got an Ai-NET EQ? Neither did I - which meant
no sound after the tuning was done. One call to Crutchfield tech support and it
was fixed (good job guys!), but it wasn't in any of the instructions. Also, I
found the installation a little tedious, but that's probably just me.

All-in-all, it's well worth the money and I would definitely buy it again
    without question.

i set this up in my car both active an passive. run about 30 curves on it an the result was alot worse than what i originally had with out the imprint. i thought i had a bad imprint so i had another one sent to me. again, same results. went from a really good sounding system to a cheap sounding transitor 50's radio type sound. it will take away your bass also. the time alighment worked alright but the rest was pretty bad. i have audyssey on my home system an it seems work alot better, although i had to go in there an manually fine tune it. audyssey is not completly accurate. you can run it 10 times an all 10 times get diff results or measurements. it sounds good on paper but it dont work well.

AMAZING Product -- Nothing Sounds Better

The PXA-H100 adds Audessey's MultEQ technology, which turns any reasonably high quality
speakers into PERFECT speakers by compensating for all frequency and timing deficiencies
as found in your specific vehicle (uses a microphone during setup). No car stereo without
MultEQ can sound as good as one with MultEQ. You have to hear it yourself to believe the
difference. (And no, I am not in any way associated with either Alpine or Audessey.)

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Okay, not sure how anyone can give this unit a bad review. I have 21 years
experience in car and home audio, maybe that is why it was the easiest component ever
to hook up. I am of course using the 3 way mode and it worked right out of the box. Set
the x-over points and off it went. Much easier then Symmetry EPX-2, 3Sixty.2 and any
others. I did not use the mic or the program because I only needed the active x-overs.

Two things that could be improved upon: The AI-net cable needs to be longer or the
RCA outs. I had to get a little creative with where the box went. Second, this unit is not
true 4 volt out. I still had to use the <2 volt setting on the sub amp to get any bass
response. Other then those minor things, it sounds great, works great and installs easy.

MAKE SURE ALL THE AI-NET SWITCHES ARE IN THE CORRECT POSITION!!!

The music does sound better. Mids improved but if you have mid controls or an equalizer
you could get it close to what this does. maybe I will run the program again to see if anything

    Alpine PXA-H100 IMPRINT™ Audio Processor

Written By tsounds, Reno, NV on Thursday, April 22, 2010

PXA-H100 along with the new CDA-117 in 3-way mode gives great control over time delay and crossover. The Imprint software is fine for stock speakers and coax set-ups. Alpine needs to write additional software alowing maunal settings of crossovers and allowing for bass boost for high end systems. The software at least at the PC end needs to be able to save more curves and transfer them back and forth. I also noticed the "S" lisp thing and mid/sub bass issues as well so I ended up back in manual mode for my Colorado crew cab with A/D/S 346cs tweeters/mids in the front doors, A/D/S 346is mid bass in the rear doors and A/D/S 10" sub woofer under the rear seat. Nice results in comparison to my last system using the DVA 9861/PXA-H701 head/processor. Next to look a the new PDX F6 and M6 amps to replace my MRF-540 and 450 amps.

    Not impressed with imprint

Written By Alan, Miami on Tuesday, April 13, 2010

First of all, If you are an audiophile, don't even bother with this product. The tuning functions are too few and inflexible, especially if you use the imprint mode. After it makes it's adjustments, you can only alter the treble, bass, and subwoofer settings in an extremely limit manner.

For the casual listener who is looking to get more out of their Alpine headunit, also beware! This product is not as "out of the box" as they claim. There will be some effort on your part to get the best tuning experience, such as playing with your amps gains and crossover settings to makeup for the overcompensated for dip in your low range.

Personally, I don't feel one should have to pay extra for the features of this device, especially in the top-end segment of their headunits. However, it seems as if Alpine is more content with bottom line profit through accessory sales than it is with providing their loyal customers with value.

The only "real" benefit I see to using this product is the 4V pre-outs which will of course allow you to run your amps more efficiently. Also, in manual mode, there is the addition of a 7 band graphic EQ along with a 5 band parametric EQ. MMX???? In my opinion is only good for regular AM/FM radio. With all other sources, the lowrange is overcompensated for and the mids and highs sound a bit unnatural. Again, I believe that this should have been already included on the highend models....

Much better than before but could be better

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This does a credible job of equalizing the sound even though, as others have noted, it
drops the mid and bass too low. It favors the high end to the point of harshness with
some recordings. Some of the "S" sounds are pretty bright and there is no good way to
get rid of them because of the limited tone controls. Another problem is that with my
Boston Acoustics titanium tweeters and the high-end bias I get some sounds that might
be the domes breaking up. I'll try redoing the measuring and playing around with the
microphone placement to try and get rid of it.

The time delay function works very well and creates a good sound stage.

Overall the system sounds much better with this device than without it and it has the
ability to store 2 sound curves in the headunit (CDA-9886).

    What a disappointment

Written By jahson, Carolina, Puerto Rico on Saturday, November 14, 2009

I don't understand what's the great thing about this product. First of all the instructions are awful. It took me a while to really get this thing going. The results were a little better than what i had before but for the hype and the 5 stars it was very disappointing. I have measure it 6 times with different gain setups and mic positions and the results were very disturbing. Two times one of the curves has turn insanely loud while the other curve and the 'multi-effect off" had sound exactly the same. All six times low and low-mids have been drastically turn down so all you here is the front speakers very loud. Don't waste your time and money on this product. get another eq.
