Denon

Our take on the Denon DCM-290

by Loren Barstow

The DCM-290 from Denon combines five-disc convenience with advanced technology to make your CDs sound better than ever. The disc carousel spins in either direction, so you can jump from disc to disc without long periods of silence in between. You can also pop in a CD-R or CD-RW loaded with MP3 or WMA (Windows® Media Audio) files for hours of your favorite tunes. Random play helps keep your music fresh, or you can use 20-track program play to specify a custom song sequence.

Denon's proprietary digital-to-analog converter fights jitter to maintain the purity of the music signal. Optical and coaxial digital outputs allow you to make a noise-free connection to your receiver, so you'll hear your music exactly as it was recorded.

Highlights:

  • disc exchange
  • plays CDs, audio CD-Rs & CD-RWs, and MP3 & WMA CDs
  • tray rotates clockwise or counter-clockwise for faster disc access
  • 32-track programming, repeat, and random play
  • optical and coaxial digital outputs
  • headphone jack
  • remote control input/output (for use with Denon receivers with a compatible remote control in/out jack)
  • detachable AC power cord
  • Advanced Multilevel Noise Shaping D/A converter

    Features

Advanced Multilevel Noise Shaping DAC: The DCM-290 features a Multilevel Noise Shaping DAC. This multi-level modulation powerfully removes the adverse effects of jitter, and because it is built into the output amp, a clean analog output with suppressed high-frequency interference can be directly obtained.

Disc Exchange: You can exchange up to 4 discs while playing a fifth; once the drawer is open, 3 CDs can be changed, then you must use the disc skip button to remove the remaining one.

Music Calendar: The player has a 20-track music calendar.

MP3/WMA Playback: This unit will play MP3 and WMA files recorded onto CD-R and CD-RW discs using the ISO 9660 level format. A maximum of 256 folders can be played and the total number of files and folders is 512.

Program Play: Up to 32 tracks can be programmed and played in any order.

Random Play: This unit allows you to choose Full Random Play, Program Random Play, or Disc Sequential Random Play. When Full Random Play is selected, all the tracks on the loaded discs are played in random order. When Program Random Play is selected, all the programmed tracks are played in random order. When Disc Sequential Random Play is selected, you can select the CDs to be played in random order. Up to 5 discs can be selected.

Repeat Play: The DCM-290 allows you to repeat the current track, current disc, or all discs. In addition, you can repeat Program Play and Random Play.

Direct Selection: Using the supplied remote, you can directly access discs and tracks.

Dimmer: You can select one of three brightness levels, or the display can be turned off.

    Inputs and Outputs Notes

Control In/Out: The DCM-290 has a mini-jack input and output on the rear panel to allow you to connect a Denon receiver with remote control in/out jacks. With this connection, you can control the CD player with the receiver's remote.

    choose another

Written By TedM, Canyon Country, CA on Sunday, May 13, 2012

I've had this product for several years. It has been used almost every day. Sound quality is good, and matches well with my components. That said, the machine started to malfunction after about a year of use. Such things as not loading properly, not reading a loaded disc, disc tray making loud grinding noise when advancing. It's been a tossup as to whether it will play or not. So, reading the other reviews, it seems you will either get a good machine or a bad one. I expect a machine to play reliably, without worry for many years, and this one didn't. Will not buy another Denon product.
    Pros:
    Good sound
    Cons:
Won't always play properly, didn't last much longer than a year

    Reliability not good

Written By Owen, Central Illinois on Sunday, May 06, 2012

This player sounded fantastic when I first purchased it. It seemed to be rather solidly built. After about 8 months, it started skipping. I was finally able to send it in for repair to Denon. They sent me a B-stock unit that lasted 3 days and did the same thing. I sent the second unit back. The third unit didn't work out of the box. They sent me an A-stock unit. It worked for a couple of years with very little use. It's been powered off over 99% of the time for the last couple of years. While not having a working CD player, I converted most of my CDs to flac and use SONOS, so I didn't use the unit much. Now the current unit is doing the same thing the other 3 did. I realize that some units may have defects and a warranty replacement may be necessary (That's what a warranty is for). But FOUR units not working with the same problem in 3.5 years?
    Pros:
Fantastic sound, uses TI/Burr-Brown PCM1716 DAC.
    Cons:
Doesn't last long, or I have really bad CD player karma.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was talked into this unit by a crutchfield tech and I must say he was right. It is a solidly
built unit that has very good sound quality. I was ready to buy a whole new set up
includinga new receiver when the tech said lets just try this first. Sound is now rich and
full and no skipping or hiccups in any CD files including mp3 or wma. I have this unit
outdoors at a pool and it is audible thru the entire yard. It was also so very easy to install
that I put it in myself, much to my husbands astonishment. Only disappointment is that
when CD 5 is done you must go and reload or restart the sequence. I am very pleased
with this unit and at a very reasonable cost.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just got this three weeks ago as an open box from Crutchfield. It's a solidly built unit, big and heavy. It isn't super-fast at shuffling or rotating between cds, but it sounds great and looks to be a real workhorse. Mp3 cds play without problem, as do cdrs I've burned on various pcs w/ various media over the last ten years. That's what counts for me. Do make sure you take those transit screws out of the bottom before you turn it on, though!!

great sound quality but poor mp3 player

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound quality is great, but the CD loading time is slow and it reads 1 out of 5 of my MP3 discs. The description for this unit should read excellent CD player with limited MP3 capabilities. It will play MP3 discs one at a time but not on shuffle mode.

    Outstanding Performance

Written By Roy, Ossining, NY on Monday, March 12, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased a Denon DCM-290 to upgrade a Kenwood CD Changer. The hookup was easy. I used coax. The sound quality is outstanding. I am using the digitial/analog conversion of the receiver (Onkyo 610) because that is the only way to have all the 5 surround sound speakers operational. To use the Denon converter, you must use the RCA plug analog connectors.

The remote is a bit cheap for a high end component. the buttons are small, and there in no power button on the remote. Since the front panel of the Denon does not have all the controls, the remote is really quite essential. This is definitely a drawback. I am now using the Onkyo remote to control the Denon. That control has larger buttons with clearer lettering.

    total disappointment

Written By Chris, Los Angeles, CA on Saturday, February 17, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this product (Denon DCM-290) at the end of 2006. It has performed very well. BUT, this only last about 6 weeks. All the sudden, the tray won't close, and makes huge noise. It is simply a MAJOR mechanical breakdown. This is too bad, because the Crutchfield 30-days return periods have just passed. Now, I need to have this repaired under warranty. This CD changer does not worth anywhere near $250. In retrospect, I'd say don't even bother.

    Denon DCM-290

Written By Fred989, Covington, LA on Tuesday, January 16, 2007

I bought this CD Changer to compliment the Denon 2807 that I just got. It appears to be a top quality product and it works flawlessly. Performs in every way that one would expect from a Denon product and the match to the 2807 is perfect. I am very pleased with this unit and give it 2 big thumbs up. Highly recommended.

    Cable choices

Written By IRG, Upstate, NY on Wednesday, December 20, 2006

I just wanted to point out to other potential buyers, is that if you use the optical/coaxial cable, you are thereby bypassing the cd players Digital to Analog processing abilities, and letting your receiving do it. That's fine, especially if your receiver is top notch. However if you are buying this cd player because of it's superior sound (compared to other units) don't use the digital cable, use a regular RCA cable. This will enable the cd player to do the DA conversion, and not the receiver. Just FYI.

    Very impressed!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Was using a technics CD changer for the last 7 years. it treated me well. However, I noticed it was starting to get a bit long in the tooth and decided to retire it to backup duty. Times have certainly changed since I purchased it back in 1999. There arent to many dedicated CD changers on the market anymore. I decided to brouse Crutchfield's website and see what they had to offer. This Denon model caught my eye. However, I wasnt sure if I could rationalize paying $250 for a CD changer. I called and talked with Rhonda, who turned out to be a very pleasent and knowledgeable Crutchfield sales associate. After discussing this Denon model (and a few others that were a little chaeper) with her. I decided to spend the extra cash for this model. I mean after all, I had nothing to lose with Crutchfields 30 day money back guarantee and free return shipping. Placed the order on a Thursday, and it arrived via free UPS ground on a Monday afternoon. To sum it up, this model was and is worth every penny! The one minor negitive is that it takes a bit for the CDs to shuffle in random play. However, quality of the music playback is well worth the little delay. Make sure you buy an optical or coaxial cable to enjoy the full richness of sound thos model offers. Trust me, you wont regret it!
