Drift Innovation

Our take on the Drift® Innovation HD170 Stealth Camera

by Kristen Schaub

Re-live your sports adventures in high-definition
Capture your extreme stunts in HD with Drift Innovation's rugged HD170 Stealth Camera. It captures video in stunningly sharp "Full" HD 1080p video resolution, so you can re-live your moves in all their crisp, clear glory. Or you can set the cam to "burst mode" and it'll snap sharp 5-megapixel photos at an interval of your choosing. Now you can finally show your buddies just how extreme that mid-air flip looked from your point-of-view!

helmet mount

Easy mounting to your helmet or handlebars
This rugged, water-resistant digital camera has a specially designed shape that mounts perfectly to a helmet, goggles, handlebars, and more. The rotating lens means you can mount the camera at any angle and any position to get the exact shot you're looking for. It's perfect for capturing skydiving formations, ski jumps, skateboarding tricks, and just about any other extreme sport move you can think of.

Built-in display so you can capture the video you want
Here's a feature you don't see on many sports action cameras: a 1-1/2" color LCD screen. It lets you review and critique your moves on the spot, so you won't have to wait until you get home to see your footage — that way you can make sure you've captured your stunts just the way you envisioned them. The HD170 also comes with a component video connection, allowing you to show off your moves on your TV when you get home. And the included remote fits on your wrist, so you can choose when to call "Action!". Or you can also hand the remote over to a friend, and let them call the shots.

    Features

Overview: The Drift HD170 Stealth is a water-resistant sports action camera that is capable of recording full 1080p HD video. It comes with a variety of mounts so you can use it whenever and wherever you want. You can record to SD/SDHC memory cards up to 32 GB.

Video Resolution: The HD170 records 16:9 HD video in H.264 (MOV) video format. You can choose from three video resolutions: 1080p, 720p, and WVGA. At 720p and WVGA, you can choose from 30 or 60 frames per second. When recording in 1080p, only 30 fps is available.

Photo Mode: In addition to full HD video, the HD170 can also take 5-megapixel JPEG photos. You can choose to record one photo at a time, or set the camera to take photos at a set interval (2, 3, 5, 10, or 30 seconds).

Lens: The lens gives you a wide 127° recording angle when recording in 1080p and WVGA, and 170°in 720p. The lens can be rotated up to 300° for upright images from most any angle. The lens has a focal range of 0.5m (19.7") to infinity. A digital zoom of up to 4x is available in 720p and WVGA modes.

Imaging Device/Sensitivity: The camera uses a high-quality CMOS image sensor for excellent video quality. An adjustable exposure setting allows you to determine the camera's sensitivity to light. If recording in very bright or dark conditions, you can adjust the exposure from -2.0 to +2.0. There is also a Night Mode to enhance recordings made in very low light.

Microphone: The HD170 has a built-in microphone for recording sound with your action videos. The microphone sensitivity is adjustable (low, medium, or high) in the camera menu. An input is available for an external microphone (item # 788DMIC), or adapters for microphones with 3.5mm (788D35MM) or RCA (788DRCA) plugs.

LCD Screen: The 1.5" TFT color LCD screen allows you to preview your shots before you start recording, as well as play back your videos immediately after shooting.

Video Output: Using the proprietary audio/video cable, you can play back HD videos on your HDTV. The cable has a component video plug (3 RCAs) and stereo RCA audio plugs.

Power Requirements: The HD170 is powered by a rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery (3.7 volts / 1100 mAh). A fully-charged battery provides about 2-1/2 to 3 hours of shooting time at 77°F, slightly less in colder temperatures. Battery life can be extended by changing the LCD brightness setting (or turning off the LCD), or setting the camera to turn itself off when no buttons are pressed for a set amount of time. A longer-life battery (1700 mAh--4 hours) is also available. The battery can be charged via USB or an optional battery charger or cigarette lighter adapter.

Remote Control: The supplied 2-button wireless remote control allows you to easily operate the camera hands-free. A Velcro strap is supplied to allow you to wear the remote on your wrist or secure it to various devices. The remote works on radio frequencies (RF), so line-of-sight is not required as with infrared remotes. The remote has a range of approximately 10 feet. The remote will need to be paired with the camera prior to use. If desired, a single remote can be paired to multiple cameras, so you can start/stop recording all paired cameras with one button press. The remote control is powered by the CR2032 battery (installed).

Mounting Options: The HD170 is designed for use during multiple activities. The camera comes with the following mounting hardware:

    • Universal Clip: The Universal Clip screws onto the bottom of the camera. With the Universal Clip in place, the camera can then be used with a variety of mounts. The clip has two "arms" that click into place in each of the mounts.
    • Goggle Mount: The Goggle Mount can be attached to most goggle straps up to 1-1/2" wide, or to the supplied adjustable elastic head strap.
    • Helmet Mount: The curved Helmet Mount can be attached to a solid helmet using the supplied self-adhesive Velcro pads, or to a vented cycle or kayak helmet using the Velcro strap.
    • Handlebar Mount: The handlebar mount will fit many bicycle and motorcycle handlebars with its C-clamp style fastener. The mount includes a rubber pad that fits between the mount and the handlebar to keep the mount from slipping out of position.
    • Tripod Mount: Without the Universal Clip, the HD170 has a standard 1/4" tripod thread which can be used with most standard camera mounts or optional suction mounts.

Computer System Requirements: You can upload your videos and photos from the HD170 to your PC or Mac using the supplied USB cable. Recommended system requirements are as follows:

      Windows Macintosh
    Operating System Windows 7
    Windows Vista
    Windows XP (SP2 or later)
    MAC OS X v 10.4.11 or later
CPU 3.2 GHz Pentium 4 processor or higher 2.0 GHz Intel Core Duo or higher
RAM 1 GB or more 1 GB or more
Other Graphics Card with at least 256 MB of Video RAM
    Direct X 9.0c or later
Graphics Card with at least 256 MB of Video RAM
Recommendations To smoothly view and edit 1080p HD video, more powerful hardware is required.
Since HD video requires large amounts of hard drive space, an external hard drive may be needed to store your video files.

Got About 10 Hrs Of Video Out Of It

Written By Ehrenkd, Eureka, IL on Tuesday, October 02, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this to take video and photos from my road bike. Worked great for a little while, provided good video. But recently it works intermittently, to the point now that I can rarely get it to function. Seems to take a very long time to respond to input, pressing a button and it is really, really slow to respond. Get it set up to record video and the counter is visible counting and the "record" icon is in the window, let it go for a minute, then check and there is no file recorded. Happened after a few bike rides and all the time now. Too bad it was a good concept, just wasn't robust enough to handle the vibration I'm guessing. I've tried other SD cards and it makes no difference. Battery is charged, formatted the SD card with the camera, have the latest firmware installed, all to no avail. It always boots up, but seems to lock up in blank screens and as I said before, responds really slowly to button presses.
    Pros:
    Great idea, good video.
    Cons:
Couldn't handle the vibration. Not very durable.

Drift HD 170 Stealth Hemet Cam

Written By Jeff H., Concord, MA on Sunday, March 18, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy to set up, easy to use. Great video quality.
    Pros:
Love the remote. Goggle mount makes moving camera from one person to another a snap. Great video quality.
    Cons:
No HDMI connection. Unless you are wearing the camera, sound volume records at low level. Probably needs external microphone if you are trying to record dialog.

    a fine product

Written By big Mike, brier, WA on Thursday, February 16, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this camera based on experiences my son had with his - haven't really compared it with other helmetcams like go pro, which I'm sure are good products, but we both feel that top-of-helmet mounting is risky if you get into the trees, which we like to do. Plus it makes you look like a teletubby. But as to the Drift 170: The menu is a little tricky to navigate at first, but that's not unusual, and close attention to the PDF manual helps sort things out. Once I had the basics set up, the camera was easy to use. I used the goggle strap mount, and used the remote control on my wrist to start and stop recording. You get a clearly audible beep when recording, and also when stopping, although it takes a firm push on the stop button, and there's a one or two second lag before you hear it. By my second day's use, I was able to turn the camera off while riding the lift, then back on, without taking my glove off. so controls are pretty much a snap. The videos are great, but experiment with adjusting the camera angle so you're not just seeing your ski tips and a few yards in front. I'm also going to try duct taping my goggle strap to my helmet so the weight of the camera doesn't cause jostling with things get hot & heavy. The only actual complaint I have is: why did they cheap out on the length of the wrist strap for the remote? It CANNOT be wrapped around my glove, I can only just get it around my bare wrist. Deal with this, Drift.
    Pros:
good selection of video and photo options, lots of mounting options, great price
    Cons:
    child size wrist strap

    Great camera

Written By Robert L, New Orleans on Saturday, February 04, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was a little worried about the quality but when they say HD they mean it. Great price for an awesome camera.
    Pros:
Rotating lens, easy to mount any where, non slip rubberized body.
    Cons:
If sound is an issue buy the external mic. Internal mic is less than quality.

Drift review - bike trail videos primary use

Written By Jerry H, Des Moines, IA on Monday, January 16, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Drift HD video camera performs great. Use only the 1080p setting and have over 8 hours of video of local bike trails. Ride a Vision recumbent and use the bicycle mount extending between my feet to film straight ahead from a camera height 32 inches above the trail. Am watching videos in the winter months with Vision mounted to a trainer and pedaling while watching the trail rides on 46" Sony lcd tv. I have all the videos on 32 gig usb thumb drives and attach the thumb drive to a usb port on a Roku XD/S media player attached to the tv. The Roku plays the MOV H-264 videos flawlessly and eliminates having to play from my laptop via HDMI cable to the tv.
    Pros:
Like the remote and all features of this Stealth camera. I had purchased the first model black and bright yellow color for these videos and when I saw Crutchfield had such a fantastic price on the all black model with an extra longer life battery, standard battery and even a nylon carrying case, purchased this one as a backup and extra in case of failure of either one. Great service from Crutchfield and Brooke and a price 1/2 of what I paid another vendor for the other one in July 2010.
    Cons:
Only downside I can think of are the file size of approx 43 minutes and approx 4gb per video but that is not a fault of the camera, apparently of the technology and have file size limits with all 3 of my Canon digital cameras as well.

    Unbeatable!

Written By Converterjoe, Dothan, AL on Friday, January 06, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought three of these for use in developing training videos but after seeing the quality of the video, we'll have to get by on only two (one is going home with me to mount on my scooter and my kyak). I got the waterproof case and every accessory I could find. Setup and operation are straightforward and easy. I can't comment on the camera's audio because I've only used with an external mic (elimination of ambient noise necessary on training videos) but I'd be willing to bet it's great. Great build on this camera. Can't find a thing to complain about. Couldn't believe the price Crutchfield had on these units! Saw them elsewhere for double. I thought there had to be a catch but there wasn't. They even threw in a bunch of free stuff! These cameras are fantastic and buying them from Crutchfield makes them that much better!
    Pros:
Great video clarity. Wrist remote. Crutchfield service and support! Price.

    Awesome

Written By Dan, Northern NH on Tuesday, November 22, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have the Hd170 & now the Hd170 Stealth, it's a great Camera takes real good videos, The time laps is a cool option to use. I would recommend the external mike if you want good sound I have had great luck with it. I had the Vio pov 1.5 and the drift is much better. Better than my friends gopro to. I think I'll buy a 3rd from Crutchfield.
    Pros:
Great all in one POV Camera shoots great video, stills look awesome with a fish eye effect. time laps photo's are a pulse. easy to use easy to mount and get the angle you need
    Cons:
Wish the external mike jack was more weather proof but you can get by with the silicone cover, lens cover would have been nice but the new one fixes that. Smaller would have been better but it's ok

    This one's a keeper!

Written By kly, San Antonio, TX on Monday, November 21, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Was trying to decide between a GoPro or Contour to take along with me on motorcycle rides. Came across review on Drift's Stealth cam and scales tipped towards it. Crutchfield offered best price deal, and then sweetened it even further with free battery, SD card and bag! Am very impressed with how well it handles capturing both still and videos while on the move, and riding thru heavy shadows as well as into directly into a setting sun.
    Pros:
Pretty easy to figure out how to use. Great pics, both video and stills even while moving thru wide range of lighting. Great mounting options. Looks, feels durable.
    Cons:
Screen is nice, but difficult to read the info or view outdoors in the sunlight. Could have benefited from abit more details in the manual (which has to be downloaded from Drift's website). But trial & error gets things figured out.
