My system has plenty of power. Who needs an amp?

You might think you don't need an amp because you have a 400-watt system in your car, or because your new stereo puts out 50 watts a channel. But those are peak wattage ratings, which may boil down to 15 or 20 watts per channel, using the more realistic RMS rating. An amp sends your speakers the power they need to deliver your music with clarity and impact, whether you're using factory speakers or high-performance components. And low-frequency reproduction requires lots of power, so an amp is an absolute must if you're adding a sub to your system.

Our take on the Profile AP740

by Tim Sprinkle

Give your sound system some West Coast style with a California Series amplifier from Profile. These brushed aluminum and chrome beauties look expensive, so you may not believe your eyes when you check the price! And, you get high-end features like gold-plated outputs, a brushed aluminum case, variable filters, and a 3-year warranty — for less than you might expect.

With the AP740 4-channel amp, powering up your whole sound system has never been easier — or more affordable! The adjustable bass boost lets you dial in some serious low end punch, and the variable high- and low-pass filters let you contour the sound to match your vehicle's speaker setup. You even get a variable treble boost of up to 12 dB at 8,000 Hz for crisp, clean sound across the musical spectrum.

Highlights:

  • 60 watts RMS x 4 at 4 ohms
  • 90 watts RMS x 4 at 2 ohms
  • 180 watts RMS x 2 bridged output at 4 ohms
  • 4-ohm stable in bridged mode
  • 2-, 3-, or 4-channel output
  • Tri-way capable (Tri-Way crossover required)
  • fuse rating: 40A
  • requires 8-gauge power and ground leads — wiring and hardware not included with amplifier
  • variable filters (low-pass from 50-250 Hz, high-pass from 80-1200 Hz, at 12 dB per octave)
  • variable treble boost (0-12 dB) at 8,000 Hz, on front channels only
  • variable bass boost (0-12 dB) at 45 Hz, on rear channels only
  • preamp-level inputs (speaker-level to preamp-level adapter included)
  • preamp outputs
  • 11-7/8"W x 2-1/16"H x 10-1/4"D

    Features

Power Strip: This Profile California AP740 amplifier features a bright red power light strip on the top center of the unit to indicate when the amp is turned on. The 3-15/16" power light strip consists of five LEDs. The green LED on the power/speaker terminal side of the amplifier will also light when power is sent to the amp.

High-to-Low Level Converters: The amp is equipped with two external high (speaker) level to low (line) level converters to allow you to connect the amplifier to a receiver or factory radio without RCA preamp outputs or with only one pair of preouts. After splicing the receiver's speaker wires to the converter's speaker wires, you can simply plug the converter into the amp's RCA preamp input.

Line Outputs: The AP740 includes a pair of RCA line outputs for sending an unfiltered signal to another amplifier or component without splitting the signal. Note: The line outputs pass through the signal from channels 3 and 4.

Protection Circuits: This amp has three types of protection circuits: DC offset, short circuit and thermal protection. The red LED on the left side of the amplifier will light to indicate that the amplifier has gone into protection.

Built-In Crossovers: This amplifier includes built-in variable low pass and high-pass filters, one for the front channels (1 & 2) and one for the rear channels (3 & 4), each with a slope of 12dB/octave. The low-pass filters are continuously variable from 50-250Hz, while the high-pass filters are continuously variable from 80Hz to 1.2kHz. Each pair of channels has a three-way switch which lets you choose between low-pass, high-pass, or full-range operation.

Bass/Treble Boost: The rear channels have a bass boost circuit, variable from 0 to 12dB at 45 Hz. The front channels have a treble boost circuit, variable from 0 to 12dB at 8kHz.

    Inputs and Outputs Notes

Gold-plated Terminals: The AP740 features gold-plated speaker and power terminals and RCA jacks for maximum signal transfer and corrosion resistance.

Set Screw Terminals: The power, ground, remote turn-on, and speaker connections feature set-screw terminals that can accept up to 6-gauge bare wire. A 2.5mm Allen wrench is supplied to tighten/loosen the set screws.

Remote Turn-on: In addition to turning on and turning off the amplifier via the head unit's remote output, the remote turn-on also operates the reset circuit for the amplifier's protection system. The remote turn-on lead must be connected to the head unit in order to reset the protection circuits.

    Warranty Note

Warranty: The manual indicates a 1-year parts and labor warranty, however Profile has extended the warranty to three years parts and labor for units purchased from Crutchfield.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This amp is great. Small package, plenty of power, and looks and sounds great. Fits easy under my 2005 Nissan Frontier passenger seat, and barely gets warm.
It is pushing two Alpine SPS 69 C3 front, two Alpine SPS 600 rear. No sub yet but I'm confident it has the power for that too.
I'm not sure what is going on with the company, but it will be a shame if they go out of business.
    Would buy again.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great amp for the price. Crutchfield was out of the Alpine I wanted, so I decided to give this a try. It is pushing 4 Alpine SPS 600c speakers and 1 Pioneer 12inch sub. I listen to classic rock and it gets plenty loud without any problems. It has never gotten hot or even very warm, I have read some reviews were Profile amps overheated, maybe they have them wired up wrong. I am very satisfied. I had little trouble getting it adjusted like I wanted and the manuals aren't too clear, but not many are. I put a Profile mono in my son's truck pushing 2 Alpine 10 inchers and it really thumps so I decided to try this 4 channel in my truck (2007 Tundra Crew Max) when the Alpine I wanted was out of stock. I am very pleased with it.

    Great piece of equipment

Written By Cdubbs, Bolton, CT on Saturday, February 07, 2009

I love this amplifier. I hooked it up to my infinity references in the front and my alpine type s speakers in the back. It sounded great for 2 weeks. I realized i wanted to put in a subwoofer, so i bridged the rear two channels and put in a subwoofer. It really is loud in my car now and i love it. Definitely worth the money and it is a pretty flexible product.

    "Dramatic" Difference

Written By Richard, High Point NC on Sunday, December 28, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Exceptional!! A clean and dramatic improvement in my late model Porsche 911. This car runs VERY loud, but I now have decent, very full sound. No such thing as hiss or noise for me. Looks every bit as sharp as those overpriced models and fit nicely (vertically) in my forward trunk space. I could not be happier with my selections from Crutchfield - Wow!

    Get an amp

Written By LUKE, Chicago, IL on Tuesday, November 04, 2008

WOW! I started upgrading my 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad cab with swapping factory speakers for Kicker brand 2- 6x9 & 2- 6.5" full range speakers. That made a huge improvement, but I never knew how good those speakers were until I added enough power to properly drive them. What a difference in not only volume, but depth. For the price, you can not beat this amp. My truck now sounds better than the factory upgrade, and for a lot less $$ than the $2000 up charge.

    Solid, Clean improvement

Written By ryjo, Juneau AK on Monday, October 27, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off--I'm not a car audiophile. My aim was not to obtain hi-fi ecstasy, but merely to make an economical improvement to the stock Subaru system.

In determining how I wanted to connect iPod to Subaru Forester, I decided I would get an amp and feed the iPod to the amp. I chose this as a "best bang for the buck" option as the specs on the amplifier performance exceed those of cd decks of the same price range.

This amp has greatly improved the sound quality obtained from the stock speakers. Much of this I owe to the flexibility provided to tweak with front/back frequency balance with the filtering built into the amp. For me, the controls are anything but annoying. This amp provides a lot of flexibility to adapt to a wide range of speakers. Second perk is found in low distortion.

Last I built an automatic source selector switch to automatically switch between the in-dash (stock) CD player and the iPod based upon which channel is hot. This simplifies things as I only need to turn on the source I want to hear, and it just comes on.

I bought this for my Toyota Paseo. Seeing as how crutchfield does not list any front speakers that work and the rear speakers have to be small to fit I opted for a custom install. This amp is powering 5 1/4" Polk Momos up front and 6x9 Polk Momos in the rear. Installing the speakers was the hard part, this amp was easy to install. Provides plenty of power, the only reason it gets 4 stars is because The controls and layout are annoying.

    Amazing Bang for the Buck!

Written By Jeremy, New Albany IN on Monday, September 01, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have always been afraid to try Profile amps as they just seemed to inexpensive to be of good quality. However, when designing my new stereo system for my daily driver, price was a big concern. I also trust that Crutchfield only sells quality products that they believe in, so with that, I settled on the Profile AP740 amp to run my main speakers.

First the amp looked great. Very clean appearance not 'cheap' looking at all.
Good controls such as high pass crossover for the fronts, adj. gain for front set and rear.

The sound has been great. I have the front channels at full gain and the rear at about 80%. Amp runs cool at volume.

I am very pleased with the performance of the amp. The 3year warrenty they offer when purchesed through Crutchfield makes it very appealing as well.

    No complants with this unit!

    Awsome Amp

Written By Radames, Salinas, Puerto Rico on Thursday, June 05, 2008

I bought this amplifier about 3 months ago and i have it hooked up to a 2 sets of 6 .5 Polk MOMO Components MMC6500 and i have them hooked up at 2 ohm and this amplifier makes my car sound amazing. I've had people ask me weather if i have 6-8 speaker in my car (4 component and 2 12" subwoofers). If your looking to get a cheap but very reliable and decent power this amp is def for anybody. Also the red LED makes for custom installs a good addition.

i have used profile amps for about 8 years now, all different ones, they aren't name brands so people try to knock them for that. but they sound very clean on highs, and also hit very hard on subs. they also have much better rms power than other amps in their price range, all in all they are great amps for the money and have a lot of features that aren't typically on less expensive amps. they are not waterproof though!

    Best Bang for the Buck!

Written By Jason, Fresno, CA on Tuesday, July 10, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've searched all over for the best bang for my buck, and the AP740 amp is the winner. If you compare this amp with the top name amps in the industry, you'll be asking yourself why are they selling this amp for several hundred dollars less.
I've installed 4 - 6.5 speakers (50 watt RMS)in the doors of an '05 Subaru Legacy. This amp has no problems running all 4 speakers, matter of fact, I have to keep the gain levels below 25%.
With any amp, make sure the RCA's are as faraway from the power wire to the amp, this will provent engine noise through the speakers.
Overall - Excellant amp, great instructions, 2 line converters included, easy to use multi functions

    Value Hides in Profile

Written By Jason, Pass Christian, MS on Tuesday, July 10, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my first time buying a Profile amp, but I have known a few people that loved them so I thought I would try my hand with them. So far, I am a believer! I am not running some crazy system with a million speakers and a billion dollars, so I just needed a decent 4-channel amp to power my 4 6.5" speakers. I did not want to use the head unit as it only offers a very low amount of RMS output (22W x 4). I did some research and found the Profile California AP740 had a ton of great features but not an outrageous price. The biggest selling point has to be the price. For under $130 you get a 60W x 4 RMS amp with a 3 year warranty. What is not to like about that? If you are building a small stereo system, and want to have better sound than a standard or afteer-market head unit, Profile is a great buy!

    Noisy

Written By John, Houston,Tx on Sunday, May 13, 2007

Most people say the amp is clean but the one I received has a constant hiss and transmits engine noise. My signal and power lines were kept separate and I re-grounded the amp 6 times with 4ga wire... (I have prior training in electronics- everything was done correctly) the noise will not go away. Everyone else cant be wrong so maybe give one of these a try but have a back up plan. I'm returning mine and moving on to 'plan B'.

    this amp GROUND POUNDS down

Written By lil bill, Harrisburg, Pa on Thursday, April 12, 2007

i purchased this amp in 2005 and never installed it until today. whyd i wait so long you ask? my vehicle situation.....long story. reading reviews on this amp since i purchased it had me on my toes because some were bad and some were so so and most were good. but noise seemed to be the biggest complaint of this amp. mine has NONE at all. this amp provides serious power and sound to my interior speakers.
my set up is as follows:
Pioneer TS-A1781R 4way front speakers, Pioneer TS-A6990R 5 way rear speakers i got when i purchased the amp and never installed, Infinity Reference 1011T tweeters mounted but not even wired for sound yet. my amps gain, bass boost and treble boost arent even turned more than half way up. the volume adjust from my jvc headunit that sends power signal to the amp is still on 0 of -5 to +5 my eq is set at flat and it is LOUD. seriously it sounds and feels like i already have a sub in my intrepid. my mirrors shake, my tassel jumps to the bass, and the highs are super loud and clear. including the fact that my infinity tweeters arent hooked up yet. i cant wait to get my kicker L5s in when my cap gets here. back to the amp now. i am running a 1400 watt 5 gauge power and ground wire kit from scosche and 10 gauge speaker wire to amp. note: it takes special work in an intrepid to run wire from front doors to inner car but i had ways around that. also to avoid noise. make sure you have a good ground connection and run all power and ground wires to the opposing side of where your sound wires and cables are ran. this will avoid most noise problems and save you from buying noise filters that you cant return like i did. lol.
    overall: 4.5 on the scal

    Good all-round multipurpose amp

Written By Andrew, Cincinnati, OH on Saturday, February 24, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have only used this amp for a few hours now but here's what I have to say...

The good: I moved from an old HiFonics with ringing in both channels to this and am very impressed. So many features.. I like the on-board variable crossovers so I can really clamp off the low freq from those mids. Or you could bridge it and power a couple of 10"s. 2 of these amps may be all you need.. ever!

The bad: I don't like the idea of a "subsonic filter" because bass is as much felt as heard. But it does add some protection for the sub driver.

Overall the amp sounds pretty clear. No pop during power on/off and no hiss/whine during use. The amp has a fairly large footprint but is rather shallow In comparison to what I had before.

These Now come with speaker to preamp level converters in a bag with the manual. I see other reviews for this amp talking about purchasing these.

WARNING: These are not 2-Ohm Stable in bridged mode.

Installed this amp with a set of infinity kappa 6x8s. I am now deaf. Sounds perfect. Make sure that the floor you install this on is flat. If it is not you will get a weird sound out of one channel or no sound at all. The noise stopped after I loosened the screws.

This amp is really great, no matter what other people say about it. I installed it my 99 grand cherokee with no problems. the sound clarity from it is really awsome. nice crisp and clear powerful music come from my speakers. there is just a little hiss that come from the speakers while changing the songs, but who cares. it sounds awsome. the little red strip that is in the middle lights up red, and looks really nice. overall, this is a very awsome amp for the money, and is just as good as those $200+ amps.
