Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Pioneer FH-P8000BT

by Ken Nail

You'll enjoy the convenience of Bluetooth capability and wealth of playback options with Pioneer's FH-P8000BT CD receiver. And it fits perfectly in the double-size opening found in many dashboards.

This versatile receiver plays MP3, WMA, and AAC files on disc, controls a satellite radio tuner, and features a USB input, built-in iPod® controls, and a rear auxiliary input. When your iPod is connected to the USB input, the receiver bypasses your iPod's built-in digital-to-analog converter, using its high-quality DAC to deliver your music files with the highest fidelity possible. The Sound Retriever feature livens up flat-sounding music files by restoring information lost in compression, and you can use the 7-band equalizer to find the perfect tonal balance for your music. And you'll be able to make and receive calls through the stereo, without having to fumble around for your Bluetooth phone.

The receiver's clean design keeps operation refreshingly simple. The easy-to-use Rotary Commander interface locates your favorite songs or changes system settings with a touch of a button and a twist of the large control knob. System information, menus, and song titles show up bright and clear on the cool blue, 3-line LCD display. The 10-key wireless remote offers extensive fingertip control over your system while you drive, or you can add an optional adapter to control the receiver with your factory steering wheel controls.

Connect amplifiers and subwoofers to the three sets of high-voltage preamp outputs to build a high-powered car audio system. High-pass and low-pass filters let you adjust the range of frequencies you send to your speaker setup.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the receiver, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

      Display Features

Blue OEL Display: The FH-P8000BT features a black background with a three-line blue Organic ElectroLuminescent (Organic EL) display, which takes advantage of MP3, WMA, iPod, XM Radio, and Sirius, plus CD Text-encoded discs. This display makes it easy to read and cycle through the song title, artist, and other text used by these sources.

Ever Scroll: When the Ever Scroll feature is set to On, recorded text information scrolls continuously on the display. It will auto-scroll up to 64 characters. Set this feature to Off if you prefer the information to scroll only once.

Function Confirmation Tones: The receiver emits an audible beep tone each time a button is pressed. These function confirmation tones cannot be turned off.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the Clock Display has been turned on, pressing and holding the Source button turns off audio output, but the clock display remains on. When the Clock Display has been turned off, pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely. Even if you have turned the radio completely off you can view the clock display by pressing the clock button. The clock will then remain On until you turn it back Off. When the unit is On you can select between the clock display or the audio track/tuner display. When the unit is off but the ignition is on, the button illumination will light up when the vehicle's headlights are turned on.

Dimmer: To prevent the display from being too bright at night, the display is automatically dimmed when the car's headlights are turned on. You can turn the dimmer function On or Off. The orange/white illumination wire must be connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit in order for this feature to work.

      Audio Section

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the FH-P8000BT are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the FH-P8000BT are as follows:

      • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
      • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
      • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)

MOSFET Amplifier: The FH-P8000BT is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

Advanced Sound Retriever: The Advanced Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. When Advanced Sound Retriever is on, the high frequency range is compensated to match the frequency response curve to the original sound. There are two available levels of the Sound Retriever effect.

EEQ (Easy EQ): The FH-P8000BT is equipped with a 7-band parametric EQ with 7 preset EQ settings. You can boost or cut each frequency band by +/- 12dB at 2dB intervals. A Custom1 curve can be created for each source, while a Custom2 curve can be created that is common to all sources. Features of the Easy EQ include:

      • Center Frequencies: 50, 125, 315, 800, 2k, 5k, and 12.5k Hz
      • Preset EEQ Settings: Powerful, Super Bass, Vocal, Natural, Custom1, Custom2, and Flat

Selectable Loudness Levels: Loudness compensates for deficiencies in the low and high frequencies at low volumes. You can choose from three levels of loudness:

      • Low: +3.5dB (100Hz), +3dB (10kHz)
      • Mid: +10dB (100Hz), +6.5dB (10kHz)
      • High: +11dB (100Hz), +11dB (10kHz)

Subwoofer Output: The unit has a pair of dedicated non-fading RCA subwoofer outputs with a low-pass filter, phase adjustment, and output level. When the subwoofer output is turned on, you can select the frequency of the 18dB/octave low pass filter (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz), select the subwoofer phase (normal/reverse), and the subwoofer gain (+6 to -24).

Switchable Rear Channel/Subwoofer Output: The rear speaker outputs can be set to provide full range output with full fading capability, or they can be set to provide non-fading subwoofer (low-pass) output. When the rear speaker outputs are set to subwoofer mode, the rear preamp outputs also switch from full range to subwoofer outputs. When set for subwoofer operation, you can connect the rear speaker leads directly to two small 4-ohm passive subwoofers or a dual voice coil sub with 4-ohm voice coils. If you prefer to use a single 2-ohm subwoofer, you can connect the woofer to one set of speaker leads, leaving the other set of rear leads disconnected. The maximum output provided when a 2-ohm load is connected to one set of leads is 70 watts.

High Pass Filter: If you do not want low frequency sounds to play from the front or rear speaker outputs, you can turn on the 12dB/octave High Pass Filter. The HPF has a selectable cutoff frequency (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz). Only frequencies higher than those in the selected range are output through the speakers.

Bass Boost: The Bass Boost function raises the level of sounds lower than 100Hz. You can select a desired level of bass boost between 0 and 6 (+12dB to 0dB).

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4dB to +4dB.

      Radio Functions

Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.

Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 level of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

Satellite Radio Ready: You can connect and control an external satellite radio tuner from XM or SIRIUS. The head unit is compatible with the GEX-P920XM (130P920XM, sold separately) Pioneer XM receiver. For Sirius there are two options; connect the SC-C1 SiriusConnect Universal Vehicle tuner and the CD-SB10 Pioneer Sirius Satellite Radio interface (700SIRPION, sold separately), or use the Pioneer Sirius Satellite Radio interface (130CDSB10, sold separately) and the SIRIUS dock-and-play adapter (607SCVDOC1, sold separately) along with a compatible portable SIRIUS radio. A subscription to XM or Sirius, plus the proper antenna is required in order to receive satellite radio programming. The satellite radio tuners connect via the IP-Bus connector on the back of the head unit.

Note: The unit will only display 8 characters at a time, and will scroll up to 16 characters.

      Disc Playback

MP3/WMA/WAV Playback: This unit can play MP3/WMA/WAV files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. MP3 files with a bit rate from 8-320 kbps, WMA files with a constant bit rate from 48-320 kbps, and WMA files with a variable bit rate from 48-384 kbps are supported. The unit is compatible with ID3 Tags and will display artist, folder, file, and album name, plus comments. Up to 8 directories, 99 folders and 999 files per disc are recognized by this unit.

AAC Decoding: This unit will playback AAC files encoded by iTunes recorded onto CDs, however files purchased from the iTunes Music Store (.m4p file extension) are not compatible. Tracks recorded at transmission rates of 16-320 kbps are playable on this unit.

List Button: The List button on the front panel allows you to the track title list, folder list, file list, preset channel list, or disc title list, depending upon the source. Once the List button is pressed, you can turn the multi-control knob to view each item on the list. To select the highlighted item, you can press the multi-control. This allows you to quickly make selections from most any source.

Disc Naming: You can use the disc title input feature to store up to 48 CD titles in the unit's memory. Each title can be up to 10 characters long.

      Aux/USB/iPod Connection

iPod Interface: The FH-P8000BT can control and playback songs on an iPod. This unit supports only iPods with a standard Dock Connector. (Please see compatibility list below for your model and software version.) You can connect the iPod using the unit's USB input; a dock connector to USB cable, such as the one supplied with your iPod, or the optional 130CDIU50 (sold separately) is required. When connected via USB, you can choose to control the iPod from the head unit or the iPod itself (some iPods cannot be controlled in this manner). You can still change songs from the head unit, even when you are controlling the iPod manually. You can perform multiple search functions, including playlist, genre, artist, and album searches. While connected and the ignition switch is set to ACC or ON, the USB connection will power and charge your iPod. The Pioneer FH-P8000BT is "Made for iPod" compatible and supports the following iPod model functions (as of Dec. 2009):

Thanks to Crutchfield, installation went well. Worked first time. Looks really nice in the dash. Nice sound quality. Blue tooth links up immediately. We have an LG cell phone and had trouble pairing the phone. Crutchfield walked us through it. Works great. Rear usb allowed us to put our ipod in the glove box and eliminate the front wire. Much cleaner look
      Pros:
      Blue tooth; rear usb
      Cons:
      Owner's manual can get confusing.

      iphone mess

Written By attila, Seattle, WA on Monday, September 03, 2012

Just a bit of warning about this unit. Since apple updated its iphone OS it will initially connect its audio bluetooth and play all the music you want. However, after that it will no longer play any audio, but it will let you use the telephone option with no problem. So it pairs with the phone, but loses its audio function. The way around this is to select the nokia connection then on the phone while its trying to connect select the radio's name option under the bluetooth. Seems like you have to do this every time..bummer.
      Pros:
      Nice options for the money
      Cons:
Won't connect to iphone correctly after initial connection

Great head unit. All the features you could need, and at a great price. The bluetooth is crisp and clear, sound quality is awesome. The only issues are that its control scheme, while intuitive for the most part, isn't 100% easy to use. Although the remote does make it easier, with shortcut buttons for audio/eq/function adjustments. The other thing is it took me having to use google to finally figure out how to adjust the clock - as the manual comes in a CD form, and my laptop doesn't have a CD drive...

Overall its a great produce, and once you get past the mildly confusing initial setting adjustments its simple to operate.
      Pros:
Looks great - flush and stock feel. All inputs in rear to avoid messy clutter coming from dash. Clear Bluetooth sound. Great audio sound.
      Cons:
Initial setting adjustments can be a bit cumbersome. Installation takes a little longer than anticipated.

      better sound than stock

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted a unit that focused on sound quality and reliable performance. BT was a must, iPod control a must. Quad outputs to interface to the oem JBL output stage required.

I have always found pioneer to have a natural presence in the high frequencies, without much digital or harmonic noise, and this unit is no exception. The unit sounds breathless and at ease. There is perhaps a bit of distortion at the very upper end, but at this level it's hard to tell if it's the equipment or the recording. But I'm being picky--- it sounds very good, certainly better than the oem toyota (panasonic).

As others have said, the simple face blends better with the oem dash. I don't want my dash to look like a circus drawn in vibrant crayola. It would be nice if the backlighting could be something other than blue. Typical pioneer interface-- menu-heavy, but not bad once you're used to it. Passengers (spouses) are not going to adapt well to it.

Bluetooth calling is excellent. Transmission SQ is slightly better than my iphone's built in speakerphone mic. Easy to understand the caller through the vehicle speakers. No problems pairing.

BlueTooth audio- can't get it to work. I'd be ok if all I can get it to do is push from the iphone thru the deck, sans controls. no go, won't connect.

ipod control. hard to beat apple's interface. but this is usable. SQ is great. Picks up where you left off. It did lock up the ipod classic when connected overnight. this will be a deal-breaker.
      Pros:
Sound Quality, BlueTooth SQ, Ipod integration (cabled). Uncluttered appearance, rich feature set. Usable EQ.
      Cons:
iPod has already frozen while connected. streaming BT audio doesn't work with iphone 4. you're stuck with blue backlighting. a few more buttons would be helpful for easier access. multi-function wheel will be the first thing to wear out. limited backlight dimming--- and the alleged downloadable FW update isn't available on pioneer's website. Earlier pioneer units (and cheaper ones) let you change the EQ frequencies. this one does not. The manual reads like English is not the primary language.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this stereo in my wife's 2001 Camry. Installation went smoothy without a hitch and it looked good. Unfortunately, had to remove and return this stereo because it required too much attention to operate. It wasn't as intuitive to operate so the (not so clear) manual had to be studied. Operation of the center knob was the only control that was easy to use. The buttons surrounding the knob are too flush with the front panel and made operation with long finger nails very difficult. The legends on the other buttons were too small to read so the location and function basically had to be memorized. The front panel lighting dims when the headlights are turned on but doesn't dim very much. At night, the panel lighting is too bright. Bluetooth pairing with a Samsung Galaxy 2 Skyrocket phone was easy. For phone calls, a nice feature was that the left/right balance can be adjusted so that the other person's voice can come from the right front speaker. This setting is saved only for phone calls so when you hang up the phone, the balance goes back to the original stereo setting. Calls are otherwise clear except a slight alternator whine can be heard by the person on the other end. Stereo sound was great and the sensitivity of Pioneer's super tuner was excellent. Might have kept this stereo if it had a more intuitive and fingernail friendly user interface.
      Pros:
Great sound, Sensitive FM tuner, Able to set a separate balance setting for phone calls, Bluetooth pairing was easy and connects up on quickly after the ignition is turned on.
      Cons:
Panel lighting is too bright a night, Button legends are too small, Buttons are not fingernail friendly,

      Pioneer FH-P8000BT

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit is as inexpensive as it gets if you want a rear USB port and direct connect for an iPod. Pioneer makes excellent equipment. I have several AVH-4200 touch screen units in my other vehicles, and this unit is not nearly as easy to use as those. Example, it takes three moves to make the iPod go to "Pause", and good luck setting the clock without the manual. That's not at all intuitive. But the cost differential more than makes up for this. Using the remote does simplify the ease of use. If you are on a low budget but want rear USB, this is the unit I would recommend.
      Pros:
low cost, rear USB, works with standard iPod cable, good sound quality, looks nice.
      Cons:
Too many steps to get to "Pause" for the iPod, setting the clock isn't intuitive.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the second car I've purchased the Pioneer FH-P8000BT for. The first was a Toyota 4Runner. I loved the functions, simplicity of design, and build quality. Also, the fact that the iPod audio is decoded in the head unit avoids issues with iPod amps. Bluetooth works great, as do all the functions. When I sold the 4Runner and bought a van I found myself missing the radio and so bought another one for our van. Even though it's been years since I bought the first one, I still couldn't find another stereo that matched the quality...and that really says something. Also, I purchased ooth Pioneers (for the 4Runner and most recently for the Sienna) through Crutchfield and found their manuals and installation gear to work great. This is why I will stick with Pioneer and Crutchfield for an end-to-end stereo solution.
      Pros:
High quality sound. Nice list of solid features. Clean install. Really can't beat the value of this radio if you want a quality product.
      Cons:
If you want more of a flashy interface or are looking for DVD playback/Navigation this radio is not for you.

      Great Radio

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very pleased with the radio for the most part. The price is absolutely right and the fact that it was made specifically for my car was even better. Installation was seamless using the factory radio brackets and the cars original trim piece without cutting, or modifying. Running the wires for the bluetooth phone mic and the usb cable was the annoying part. It takes time to figure out how to route them from behind the stereo to someplace usable without drilling holes in plastic or having to remove multiple trim panels. Truthfully I was expecting the AUX port and USB to be in the front of the radio, not behind buried inside the dash. Small inconveniences but inconveniences nonetheless. Works with iPod or iPhone and controls/charges the device. Also downloads your phone book to the stereo.
      Pros:
Stereo is very easy to use and install, comes with plenty of extra options and is XM satellite ready. A great buy for the money and fits exactly into a Toyota Avalon dash without a modifying kit.
      Cons:
The plug ins for the bluetooth mic, the USB cable and two auxiliary ports are in the rear of the radio. You have to install them when you install the radio and then figure out how to route the wires to the front of the paneling neatly without drilling holes in plastic or leaving them just hanging out on the floor or draped across the dashboard.

After deciding to finally upgrade my stock stereo (after tape/CD player went out lol) I did alot of looking. Looking at features, cost, accesories and the most inmportant...customer reviews. After compounding mounds of info....this unit stood out. It has all the features I was looking for. From the pre-outs to the aux/usb inputs. The bluetooth is a major plus for this unit, especially for the price. Plenty of cord for the mic which was nice. No need to limit yourself on where you want to put it. I love the 7 band eq along with seperate sub control, that is priceless. It makes finding the right sound balance that much easier. Getting to know the controls took about 2 hours of exploring to get the hang of it.. It did take me longer to set the clock then to set up my cell phone. :) I love the sound quality this unit has, even with my stock speakers. I can say that Pioneer hasn't slacked off on quality the last 20 yrs since I had my last one. Gotta give props to Crutchfield for having all the nessesary wiring and spacers for an easy install and very nice fit. The also sent along diagrams on how to replace my stock speakers!!! SWEET!!!!!!! :)
      Pros:
Pre-outs, bluetooth, audio adjustments, looks, USB/AUX inputs, best bang for the buck
      Cons:
ummmmmmmmmm......Crutchfield didnt send a rep over to install it for me :)

Solid & Safe Choice for Low End OEM Replacement

Written By DaveN, Detroit, MI on Monday, March 19, 2012
Installed in a 2010 Chevrolet HHR
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After resolving some issues with the GM-LAN-03 that was needed to hook this into my 2010 Chevy HHR, my experience has been really positive. I listen to a wide range of jazz - from pure acoustic to fusion - and the sound is very good. Now the weakness in the chain are the factory speakers, which are next on the replacement list.

After spending time working for OnStar, I came to appreciate the convenience and safety of hands free calling. The Bluetooth feature with the audio mic mounted on my steering column works perfectly. I hear the who I am talking with over the speakers and - best of all - they can hear me more clearly than when I used a Bluetooth headset.

A lot of my music collection goes with me on an iPod nano. I have my Pioneer set-up with the USB cable routed to the glove box. I just plug in my iPod, close the glove box, and use the head unit controls to locate artists, songs, and playlists. When I switch to another source and come back the iPod, it picks up where I left off.

A major buying criteria was to get a unit that I could plug an XM receiver into. The GEX-P920XM took about 15 minutes to figure out, route the antenna wire, and plug the XM box into the head unit with a single cable. I think it sounds just as good, if not better than the myriad of XM receivers I had on my GM company cars.

On the downside the controls take a bit getting used to. I'm still finding golden nuggets in the operations manual. That said, I'm very happy with my choice.
      Pros:
Bluetooth hands free calling, plug-in XM radio support, iPod controls, and great sound.
      Cons:
The user interface takes a bit of getting used to. RTFM (read the freakin' manual).

      Decent mid-level head unit

Written By JoeF, CoSpgs on Saturday, March 17, 2012

I bought the 8000BT last year because my car has a double-din opening and I'm not concerned with DVD or nav features. I've use Pioneer decks for about 15 years, so I stuck with Pioneer. For basic radio/cd playback, the 8000BT is solid. I also have used the bluetooth feature for phone calls and streaming music from my Android phone. Call quality is good - I can hear the other person, and I haven't had any complaints from the person on the other end. I found shortcomings of the 8000BT in 2 areas: sound adjustment and USB playback. Compared to a factory deck, the sound adjustment of the 8000BT is a big step forward. Compared to my 5 year old, single DIN Pioneer DEH-780MP, it's a huge step back. My older Pioneer has 15 EQ bands to the 8000BT's 7. The 780MP has time alignment which is totally absent on the 8000BT. A few years ago, Pioneer dropped its Premier line and cut a lot of features from their remaining decks. The 8000BT shows this. Fortunately, Pioneer is adding those features back to some of their 2012 head units. For USB playback, the 3-line display of the 8000BT is just adequate for selecting folders/tracks. When turned off, then back on, the 8000BT doesn't resume a track in the same spot - it skips back some amount I haven't been able to determine (perhaps a percent of the total track time). My biggest problem with USB is that the 8000BT doesn't correctly sort folders alphabetically. It seems to try, but still lists block of folders out of place.
      Pros:
4V preamp out Bluetooth 7 band EQ is good (not great)
      Cons:
3 line display is minimally functional for scrolling/selecting from attached USB doesn't know the alphabet doesn't measure up to Pioneers older or new head units

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Had ordered in dash navigation but sent it back because I just had a bad feeling about it and I have a hand held Garmin which works fine. I am so glad I did. This is a great addition to my Tundra. started by replacing the stock speakers, and dash tweeters, with Infinity. This made somewhat of an improvement but system still sounded muted due to factory stereo. I knew I needed a new head unit, but was hesitant because I liked the way the factory radio looked. After MUCH looking and delay of purchase I finally got this unit due to many positive reviews and I knew I was safe buying from Crutchfield because of good return policy. Got a Kicker sub and made custom box for under back seat and mono amp for it. Had both of these fully hooked up and wires run three weeks before I bought the Pioneer. The wiring was pretty straight forward (had done it once before), just take your time and follow paperwork provided. The kicker was the glossy black dash kit that came with it, as I was worried it would not match my existing dash...perfect match! i am actually happier with this new look than the factory radio I replaced. Love the bluetooth feature and Ipod hidden in glove box now. This Pioneer really sounds great. As I was installing my wife said the sub really sounds good and I told her I dont have it connected yet. When i did...BOOM! It is true it does take a lot of time getting used to main control knob. Also, mostly operate with remote control now and I think is safer
      Pros:
Appearance, sound quality, features, sound retriever function for Ipod, modestly priced, blue tooth, display can be turned off easlily for night driving
      Cons:
Only blue light display, does not dim very much for night driving, remote has to be directly in front unit to pick up signal,

Pioneer FH-P8000BT in 2006 Sante Fe

So far one of my favorite receivers. It has a great look to it but also a kind of stock look to it. So I feel better about getting it especially for the fact it might not be as flashy and might deter theft. The sound controls will over whelm you at first because this unit allows you to control all the aspects of sound going to your speakers. The remote buttons are small but for the most part a nice remote control. It does take time to learn the total iPod control as well as using the blue tooth so make sure you read the manual. But after working the controls you will have crystal clear sound stock speakers or not. And if you don't like messing with thous kinds of things than you have 7 different band equalizers you can use. I installed the unit with 2 sets of sound ordnance speakers, and 2 15's and a 2400watt amp. I love the sound I'm getting, I cannot distort the low's over my high's. It is absolutely perfect. Not to mention the blue tooth is really nice as well. Worth 300 bucks so get it. iPod control is worth getting it too.
      Pros:
Blue tooth, ipod control, sound quality, and coolness.
      Cons:
      Gotta read the manuel
