Why choose bookshelf speakers?

Bookshelf speakers may be small in size, but they can deliver surprisingly big sound. Some ultra-compact models even fit on a desktop. Most are right at home in tight spaces like shelves, so they're usually good choices for your home theater's rear channels. For the best performance, try placing bookshelf speakers on solid speaker stands to help the sound really "open up." If you want full bass impact, add a powered subwoofer and enjoy punchy sound that's as deeply satisfying as that of floor-standing speakers.

Our take on the PSB Image B6

by Kristen Schaub

Smooth-sounding bookshelf speakers

Experience dynamic, impactful sound with PSB's Image B6 bookshelf speakers. They provide impressive stereo sound in a 2.1 subwoofer/satellite system, or make excellent front-channel home theater speakers. The Image line borrows from driver technologies developed for PSB's sophisticated Imagine family, as well as their top-tier Synchrony speakers, giving you high-end sound at a budget-friendly price. The Image line also features a slightly different cabinet design than its predecessors, showcasing clean lines that won't clutter up your listening room.

Image family

PSB's Image speaker family (Image B6 shown third from the left)

Advanced drivers for clean, well-balanced sound

K2 Power crossover network

The tweeter uses a powerful neodymium magnet for crystal-clear highs.

The Image B6s each feature a 1" titanium dome tweeter that effortlessly dishes out smooth, uncolored highs. The long-excursion, high-output woofer uses the same proprietary ceramic-filled polypropylene cone as the Imagine line. The stiff, lightweight material helps it deliver midrange that's clean and balanced, with surprisingly deep bass. You'll also marvel at the detailed imaging, and wide soundstage produced by these compact speakers.

Sleek, thoughtful cabinet design

All Image speakers have heavy internal bracing and 1-1/8" thick MDF cabinets to ensure impressively solid, acoustically inert enclosures. The cabinets have a traditional look, but with slightly curved tops and fronts to soften it. This family of speakers also features attractive vinyl finishes, allowing the Image speakers to easily integrate into just about any décor.

    Driver Technology

Cone Design: The woofer cones are clay/ceramic filled polypropylene to optimize the combination of stiffness, internal damping, and low mass. The woofers' magnetically neutral polycarbonate basket contributes additional stiffness, and the bullet-shaped phase-plug enhances linearity at higher frequencies.

Tweeter: The 1" titanium dome, Ferrofluid cooled tweeters use a neodymium magnet structure to help extend the frequency response at both ends for effortless, airy top octaves and smooth, uncolored response.

Crossover Network: The crossover is a 2-way acoustical fourth order Linkwitz-Riley type with a 24 dB/octave slope. The tweeter and woofer are crossed over at 1,800 Hz.

    Connections

Dual Binding Posts:The dual binding post input terminals are located on the lower rear of the speaker cabinet. The two sets of binding posts are shorted together by gold-plated jumpers. With the jumper removed the Image B6 can be bi-wired or bi-amplified. The binding posts will accept spade connectors, single banana plugs, pin connectors, and bare wire up to 8 gauge.

    PSB Image B6 Speakers

Written By Tom, Ruckersville, VA, Ruckersville, VA on Monday, May 13, 2013

I went into Crutchfield looking for bookshelf speakers and came away with these after listening to all the display models. I loved the sound of these Psb's compared to most others I heard there. I listened to several CD's, instrumental, rock, easylistening, folk, you name it. The sound was awesome for speakers of this size. Not to big on bass, mid-range was very good, and loved the clarity and separation. I hooked these up to a Kenwood KA-6100 Integrated Amplifier and KT-6500 Tuner made in 1977, WOW is all I can say about the sound.
    Pros:
Good value for the money, excellent sound.
    Cons:
    None.

    Solid value for the price

Written By Michael, Walnut Creek, CA on Friday, March 22, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I picked these speakers for their measured specifications, as well as the PSB reputation for a friend's HT setup. We needed a bookshelf size, but with a higher efficiency rating for a HT receiver with a modest 90w of 2ch power.

I hooked them up to the receiver without the sub, cleared all DSP effects, and ran through test material I was familiar with on my personal listening room system.

First thing I noticed was that these speakers are not the giant slaying value that has been described. My reference system is clearer, and more detailed. However, the PSB B6's are a solid choice for their retail price.

The highs are clear, but not quite to the level of realism I hoped when hearing the tight plucking of string instruments, or the sizzle of a cymbal. However, I noticed no harshness or fatigue. In fact the treble sounded a bit softer than I expected out of a metal dome.

The midrange was also good, about on par for my expectations, but again, a bit soft and indistinct in areas that my reference system had the resolution to display.

The bass and mid-bass was quite full in the room I used them. I nearly did not see the need for a sub in terms of music listening, though LFE would not be well received when watching a movie without one.

I have no reservations making this a recommended pick against other speakers within its range, but its performance is not supernatural. There is a fair amount of headroom to be offered by more expensive offerings if you are considering them.
    Pros:
    - Solid performance for the price. It brings the real goods. - Fairly clean, clear, and neutral. - No harshness in the treble (often a concern with lower priced metal tweeters) - Plenty of bass for general music listening without a sub. - Fairly efficient, good pick for lower power setups.
    Cons:
    - Not quite as clear and detailed as I hoped. There's better out there, but not likely at the same price. - A bit large for a bookshelf since it has a 6" woofer--may be a concern for some. - Not terribly interesting to look at, still a box with a few rounded edges.

    A Truly Impressive Speaker

Written By Scott B., Johns Creek, GA on Sunday, March 17, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After countless hours of reading reviews, research and listening to a variety of floor-standing and bookshelf speakers, it came do two choices: these & the B&W 685B bookshelf speakers ($1300/pr).

I am a film/video producer, so a large part of my career is based on trusting my eyes and ears. After listening to these two speakers, I decided to go with the PSB's.

I paired these with my Sony STR-DN1030 7.1 receiver, a Paradigm Signature C1 center channel speaker, a BIC F12 subwoofer and a pair of Boston Acoustics A 26 surrounds.

To say that the price/value correlation is extremely high is an understatement. The PSB Image B6 speakers deliver on all fronts. We use our home theater system 50/50 for music and Blu Ray/streaming of movies, so the new speakers had to be versatile. The PSB's handle both chores with astounding ease.

The upper frequency reproduction and imaging for music listening is incredible. I listen to a lot of Steely Dan, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, and they deliver amazing volume with no sacrifice in quality. However, when I listened to the Les Mis Anniversary Recording (released over 20 years ago) it sounded like the artist was in the room with me. They create an impressive soundstage.

For movies, these speakers deliver excellent separation and volume while creating a sound field that puts you in the middle of the action. I recommend "Skyfall" for this exercise.

Not a real negative, but you will need a solid sub for maximum enjoyment of movies.

    Pros:
Price to value/performance is legendary. After side-by-side comparison, I actually preferred these to B&W 685B's ($1300/pr).
    Cons:
Reproduce lower frequencies well, but you should pair with a solid sub for home theater experience.

    PSB Image B6

Written By PaulP, Upper Arlington, OH on Friday, February 01, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far so good. I got these in September 2012 without auditioning based on reviews. I currently have these connected to my old NAD 7000 receiver. On average these get about six hours of play time each week. The sound is much richer than my old Boston Acoustics Horizon H6s. There is much more bass in these than I would have anticipated, even without a separate subwoofer. I have noticed that the clarity and realism of the sound varies with the source being played, as with any speaker. In general, most listeners have commented that the sound is very good, very realistic and much bigger than would have expected from a speaker this size. Their appearance is very unassuming. While not tiny, these are not so large as to take up too much space in the room, and fit well into most environments. So far I am satisfied with the investment.
    Pros:
Good overall clarity, more bass than expected, very nice appearance, good value for the money.
    Cons:
None that I can think of at this time.

    Great Speakers

Written By Osito, Northern CA on Friday, January 25, 2013

These are a great pair of bookshelf speakers for the price. Nice sound and very stylish, well finished cabinets. Smooth sound overall, which got even better when opting to bi-amp them (which I would whole heartedly recommend). I needed a solution to find good sound for a small space and these fit the bill perfectly.
    Pros:
Smooth sound, attractive cabinets, can be bi-amped (recommended).
    Cons:
A bit light in bass; made in China.

    Crisp Sound

Written By Blackbox, Tampa Bay on Wednesday, January 02, 2013

Will see how they perform after they are "broken in" but I love the sound NOW! These were purchased to replace my 901's. Now, I like Bose, I'm not a basher as seems chic for a lot of audiophiles, but you do need the "right" environment for them, and unfortunately, my listening room is an acoustic nightmare, so they never had a chance. The PSB's at first scared me, because I hooked them up to my Harmon Kardon 3480 Receiver, and they sounded no better than my cheap Bose 301's. But when I got a new Marantz 4023 Receiver to replace the 3480, the difference was immediate! Very crisp, clean sound - especially noticeable in the mid-range frequencies. Already disconnected my Equalizer, it is not needed anymore to downplay the mid-range frequencies. The Image 6's are not cheap for a small bookshelf speaker, but the quality is there, trust me. I do have a subwoofer used in conjunction with them, since I mostly listen to 70's rock, and need that extra punch, but really the 6" woofer is more than adequate in the PSB's. I just can't get over how clean the sound is, I imagine part of this is due to the Marantz, but I'm very happy with these small Canadian speakers.
    Pros:
Crisp, clean sound - mid-range shines! Aesthetically pleasing design
    Cons:
Recommend subwoofer to compliment them if used in a larger room

    PSB Image B6

Written By MikeL, Broken Arrow, OK on Wednesday, October 24, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really didn't believe the reviews I read on PSB speakers in general and the Image B6 in particular. I mean really, a speaker that sounds as good or better than many others at twice their price? Yes, really. Powered by an 80 watt per channel stereo / 40 watt mulit-channel receiver these speakers are phenomenal. Not only do they put out plenty of sound, the quality is exceptional.

The B6's are very transparent (I think that's the term). The midrange and treble are exceptionally clear and concise. The bass response was much better than I expected. They easily handled the orchestral pieces I listened to.

Most speakers I've ever heard seem to wrap the music around and partially obscure the vocals. With the B6's, vocals stand out in front of the music. The music supports the vocals. Voices sound like voices, trumpets like trumpets, violins are clear and crisp, etc. Soft passages are clear and distinct even at lower volume levels. For example, in the song "People" from Barbara Streisand's CD "Barbara the Concert" her voice really soars on the high dramatic passages yet the lower softer passages are clear, distinct and musical.

The B6's still need a subwoffer to get the full impact of movie effects but for music listening they are fine by themselves. Bottom line, the PSB B6 really is better and more enjoyable to listen too than many much more expensive speakers.
    Pros:
Exceptional musicality. Midrange and treble exceptionally clear and distinct, far above the norm. Value, performance for the price is unmatched.
    Cons:
Bass response is a little light but a sub easily takes care of that.

These really pack a punch and really sing for a small speaker. Very nice highs - great for musical performance self monitoring. A subwoofer helps fill out the lows and overall sound, but very exceptional as stand alones. Some "break-in" period, but after 20-30 hours, they are just amazing.

    PSB Image B6

Written By Bryan, Redwood City, CA on Tuesday, July 10, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these as an upgrade from PSB Image B15 speakers (no longer made) I've been using for several years, for a room approximately 12 by 15 feet I use as an office. The B15's are very good, but somewhat limited in the bass. Space is a problem, and I don't have room for tower speakers or a sub-woofer. The B6's have much better bass, and I find the lower limit when when the notes are rolled off by the LF cutoff is inaudible. They don't seem to be too finicky about room placement. Playing CDs recorded on cathedral organs, and other material with deep bass, no musical content seems to be missing - and that's without the "loudness" setting on the amplifier.. In addition, the B6 has much better musical dynamics, giving much more realistic-sounding reproduction. Anything from Bach to bluegrass sounds great on these speakers. Another reviewer stated that they require a high-current amplifier. I find they are an easy load for my 50-watt per channel NAD, so I'm not at all sure of that.
    Pros:
Excellent sound, no noticeable coloration at any frequencies.
    Cons:
Uses some Styrofoam packaging, which I can't recycle here. Not truly what I would call a bookshelf speaker, in that it requires some clearance at the back and sides so that the rear port works properly.

    Needs a high current amp

Written By Brad B., Dayton, OH on Sunday, September 18, 2011

Nice looking cabinets and high quality binding posts combine with smooth and detailed sound. The bass won't blow you away but it is tight and accurate all the way down to 100hz (a perfect crossover point for a good sub). The highs on the other hand are rich and very detailed and you would need to spend quite a bit more money to get audibly better performance. I gave the speakers a 4 out of 5 because I feel like they need to be driven to around -35 or higher on my 100 watt per channel amp before they really show you what they've got. I can't say for sure but I have a feeling that a high current amplifier capable of handling a 4 ohm load with about 130 watts a channel could really make these babies sing. Alas, another upgrade is in order I guess. I heard from one source that Paul Barton (the designer himself) believes that there is no such thing as a break in period for speakers. After experiencing the difference I heard coming out in the first listen to about 40 hours later I can say with confidence that they sound better to my ears now.

These speakers are the perfect balance of cost to sound value. They are not the top end, but they are very good. I recommend them to all who are shopping in this price range. The sound stage produced is wonderful when the speakers are properly placed in the room (on stands not on a bookshelf). Even the bass level was better than I'd hoped. Give them a try and see (umm. hear) for yourself!

    Nothing but the truth...

Written By Peter, Bayville, NJ on Saturday, March 20, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

...that's what you'll hear from these speakers. After they had a chance to settle down, I ran them through their paces.

    Here are some audition notes:
Down to the Waterline from Dire Straits felt real. Mark Knoppfler's guitar and vocals were truly believable. Bass was solid, clean and effortless. In Water of Love, the resophonic guitar was crisp and present. The claves wouldn't have sounded better if I was playing them myself.
The piano work on Linus and Lucy from the Happy Anniversary Charlie Brown disk was real. Lucille truly sang on B.B. King's version of Joe Cool. The shakuhachi patch on History Lesson really shone through, as did the tenor sax on Rain, Rain Go Away, which was full, rich and haunting.
Patti Austin's vocals on I Feel a Song in My Heart from Bob James Two were nothing short of rapturous. On Farandole, the flute work was believable - clean.
Dire Straits, Your Latest Trick from Brothers In Arms was breathtaking. Same goes for Why Worry.
Ladysmith Black Mumbasa's vocals on Homeless from Paul Simon's Graceland drew me in. The soundstage on Graceland extended far beyond the speakers.
The a-cappella vocals in Prayer of the Children from Kurt Bestor from the Innovators promo disk were an emotional experience.

I guess you can say that I like these speakers. Don't be fooled by their size. I didn't think such a small speaker could be this full sounding. They are clean and transparent, with little or no audible coloration. Highly recommended.
