Onkyo

The sound solution for the less-is-more movement

On one hand, you want something that sounds much better than a boombox or iPod® speaker. On the other hand, you want something that's far less complex than a surround sound system. Then you'll find your sweet spot in a classic stereo receiver. Or maybe one from the new breed that includes Internet radio or other network music options. Add two speakers (and another music source, if you like), and you're ready to relax and enjoy your tunes. It might even be all you really need for TV sound.

Our take on the Onkyo TX-8050

by Marshall Chase

A receiver for fans of both digital and analog music
You still have a turntable and maybe a cassette deck, but you're not living in the past. Your collection includes today's digital music formats as well. And this has made finding the right receiver a real challenge — until now.

For years, Onkyo's stereo receivers have won raves from our customers for their terrific sound quality. The TX-8050 boasts 80 watts per channel of clean, high-current power to deliver a powerful sonic punch that's sure to satisfy. Sure, it has RCA inputs for your turntable and cassette deck but the '8050 also boasts a full complement of analog video and digital audio inputs. Plus it adds the connections you need for today's music sources.

Give your iPod® a front-row seat
A music library used to take two friends and a moving van to carry around. Now you can simply put it in your pocket. The TX-8050's front-panel USB port beckons your iPod to come hither. Its direct digital connection bypasses the iPods processing in favor of a 32-bit chip that can make your higher bit-rate music files sound closer to the original CD. Plus, you can download a free app that lets you use your iPhone® as a convenient Wi-Fi® remote with your connected receiver.

Network- and Internet-ready
Tap in to your home network and enjoy music stored on your PC through your main system, instead of through pint-sized computer speakers. And if you have a Wi-Fi® network, you can use the optional Onkyo USB adapter. Choose from thousands of Internet radio stations — or let PANDORA® Internet radio create a set of customized "stations" based on your own tastes. The TX-8050 streams SIRIUS/XM® Satellite Radio too.

Finally — a not-too-bright idea
You've seen it before. How could you not? Receiver displays so intense they could be used to warn ships at sea of potential hazards. Yet your living room is not exactly a craggy shoal. The TX-8050 display has three settings — normal, dim and dimmer. Now when you want to turn the lights down for atmosphere, your receiver will go as easy on your eyes as it does on your ears.

High-Quality Sound: The Onkyo TX-8050 network stereo receiver employs a host of technologies to ensure optimal audio performance.

    • WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology): This technology uses low-negative-feedback circuit topology for accurate signal reproduction, improved dynamic signal-to-noise ratio, and better delivery of power peaks.
    • Low Negative Feed Back Design: Too much NFB (negative feed back) makes a system susceptible to counter-electromotive force from the speakers, resulting in a drop in perceived sound quality. To avoid this, Onkyo focuses on improving the frequency response and reducing distortion, without relying so much on NFB.
    • Closed Ground-Loop Circuits: The TX-8050 employs a sophisticated closed-circuit design in which each circuit has a separate link to the power supply. This helps to cancel individual circuit noise and keep the ground potential free of distortion.
    • HICC (High Instantaneous-Current Capability): HICC enables an amplifier to immediately cancel the speakers' reflex energy and instantaneously send out the next signal. The same high current required to achieve this also supports the amplifier's ability to handle speaker impedance fluctuations.

Anti-Vibration Chassis: The Onkyo TX-8050 features an aluminum front-panel & anti-vibration oval chassis to prevent resonance which could lead to distortion.

Discrete Amplifier Design: The Onkyo TX-8050 stereo receiver features a discrete amplifier design with massive EI transformer. The stereo amplifier is rated at 80W x 2ch (8Ω, 20-20kHz, 0.08% THD).

Listening Modes: This receiver incorporates a wide variety of stereo listening modes to bring you maximum enjoyment from your music.

    Listening Mode Description
Stereo Sound is output by the front left & right speakers, plus subwoofer with tone control.
Music Optimizer The Music Optimizer function enhances the sound quality of compressed music files. The Music Optimizer function only works with PCM digital audio input signals with a sampling rate below 48kHz and analog input signals
Direct In this mode, audio from the input source is output without any additional audio processing. This mode delivers pure sound with minimum sound quality adjustment and filtration.
Pure Audio In this mode, the display and video circuitry are turned off and the tone controls are bypassed, minimizing possible noise sources for the ultimate in high-fidelity reproduction.
Mono Use this mode when watching an old movie with a mono soundtrack.

    Tone Control: The Onkyo TX-8050 offers independent Bass (+/-10dB @ 50Hz) & Treble (+/-10 @ 20kHz) control to fine-tune your music.

IntelliVolume: The IntelliVolume setup function allows you set a volume correction value for each source, to prevent large jumps in volume when switching from one source to another. This feature eliminates the inconvenience of manually readjusting the volume control each time you switch from a source with a weak signal to a source with a strong signal and vice versa.

A & B Speaker Terminals: The Onkyo TX-8050 stereo receiver is equipped with A & B speaker terminals to connect up to two pair of speakers. The receiver uses binding post connectors for the A & B speaker outputs. The binding posts are not 5-way because a plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs; they will accept bare wire, pin connectors, single banana plugs, and dual banana plugs.

Impedance Switch: If you're using only one of the speaker sets (A or B), choose the 4Ω setting if each speaker's impedance is 4Ω to less than 6Ω, or choose the 6Ω setting if each speaker's impedance is 6Ω or more. If you're using both of the speaker sets (A & B), choose the 4Ω setting if each speaker's impedance is 8 to 16Ω.

Analog Audio Inputs/Outputs: The TX-8050 is equipped with 7 analog audio inputs (3 audio only/4 AV in). There is also two analog audio outputs (1 audio only/1 AV out).

Phono Input: Included in the 7 analog audio inputs, is a Phono (MM) input with ground terminal.

Digital Inputs: The Onkyo network stereo receiver features 4 digital audio inputs. There are 2 optical (toslink) digital inputs and 2 coaxial (RCA) digital inputs. The receiver's digital inputs do not support multichannel audio signal; PCM signal only.

Preamp Outputs: The Onkyo TX-8050 network stereo receiver employs a mono-subwoofer preamp output, a stereo preamp output, and a Zone2 preamp output.

    • Subwoofer Pre-Out: The Onkyo TX-8050 network stereo receiver is equipped with a mono subwoofer preamp output to connect a powered subwoofer.
    • Stereo Pre-Out: If you want to use a separate power amplifier and use the receiver as a preamp, simply connect the receiver's stereo preamp-output to your amp's input, and connect all speakers to the power amplifier.
    • Zone2: Zone 2 pre-outs on the TX-8050 allow you to send a stereo audio signal to a second room equipped with an amplifier and a pair of speakers. You can either enjoy the same source in both rooms, or play a different source in Zone 2. You can choose from analog, USB, or Network sources. Digital inputs (both optical/coaxial) cannot be output to Zone 2.

Note: You must currently be listening to a USB device or Network audio source in the Main Zone to initially select USB or Network as a source in Zone 2 or Zone 3. Then you can switch the Main Zone to any source you desire. You cannot select different AM/FM radio stations or listen to USB and Network content in separate Zones at the same time.

Headphones: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, the A & B main speakers are automatically muted (the Powered Zone 2 speakers are not muted). When you connect an iPod or iPhone to the USB port on this receiver, no sound will be output from the headphone jack.

    Video Section

Composite Video: Although not a surround sound receiver, the TX-8050 does employ composite video inputs & outputs; so it can be used in a basic A/V system.

    • 4 Composite Video Inputs: There are 4 composite video inputs to connect your audio/video devices to the receiver.
    • Composite Video Record Output: There is a single composite video record output for recording purposes.
    • Composite Video Monitor Output: There is a single composite video monitor output to connect to your television.

Note: The TX-8050 does not contain any S-video, component video, or HDMI inputs/outputs.

    Network & Tuner Functions

Network-Ready: The Onkyo TX-8050 stereo receiver is network-ready, which means you can connect it to your home network with a standard Ethernet cable and enjoy the music files stored on your computer or media server. If your network is connected to the Internet (broadband), you can also enjoy Internet radio.

Ethernet Connection (LAN): Connecting the stereo receiver's Ethernet (RJ-45) port to a 100Base-TX switched Ethernet network is recommended for best results. Onkyo TX-8050

Written By KirstenJ, Schroeder, MN on Thursday, May 23, 2013

Purchased with the wifi adapter. Receiver meets or exceeds expectations for sound quality and met expectations for ease of setup. Excellent value but more importantly good sound quality (without replacing old floor speakers.)
    Pros:
Simplicity of design. Internet radio. Phono input.
    Cons:
Would have been nice if the wifi was built in and didn't require the adapter.

Purchased to replace an outdated receiver for use in a bedroom. All necessary functions, including dedicated phono input and USB port on front for iPod. Virtually silent (no humming sound, unlike unit it replaced). Reasonably intuitive remote. Very happy with this purchase.
    Pros:
Good value. Front USB port. Dedicated phono input.
    Cons:
No wi-fi. Ethernet connection for use with Web music services. (However, it's easy to stream Pandora, etc. through iPhone/iPod Touch.)

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this on the recommendation of Crutchfield Advisor (thanks Lucy). I have a Denon AVR-1508 that we wanted to use for a home theater in our basement. I needed a receiver that wasn't a home theater, basic functions, phono input, iPod capable, etc. Set up was easy, firmware was up to date and the sound is better than the Denon (which I was using as a stereo receiver only). Be sure to download the Oremote app, it is worth the price. I can control the TX-8050 from anywhere my wifi reaches.
    Pros:
Crutchfield service (no surprise there), ease of setup, sound quality, price. A good receiver for those who don't need the home theater option.
    Cons:
None really. I would like a third set of speaker connections as I have 3 rooms with speakers. Easily solved with a speaker selector switch.

    Onkyo TX-8050 Workhorse !!

Written By James D, Las Vegas, NV on Thursday, April 25, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this receiver to reside in my TV stand where it will be required to, process cable box audio, process streaming audio from the internet, process audio from an analog CD player and process audio from my off air HD video antenna.

This receiver performs all of the above duties flawlessly. This is one very quiet receiver .. absolutely silent. The fidelity is exceptional, audio range excellent and the clarity is terrific. This unit makes an excellent stereo playback signal when wired to quality floor standing towers. This clean, extremely musical signal is backed up with plenty of power to easily fulfill any audio spikes that makes listening to music and movie soundtracks very dynamic.

I would categorize this box as a Workhorse with real precision and style. The connectivity is the best I've ever seen in any stereo receiver. This is truly a stereo receiver for the modern age.

One thing to be aware of ... this receiver will only process a PCM format signal from the optical inputs. I patched my cable box via an optical cord directly to this receiver, and the sound is fantastic. However, in order to export the audio from an off air HD signal, you must patch from the TV optical out .. so make sure that your Television optical out is switchable to a PCM format, otherwise no audio.

    I would consider this box a great value at $400.00 ... for under $300.00 it's a steal.

I highly recommend this box .. It really is a dandy!

    Pros:
This box does it all very well .. And you can buy it for under $300.00
    Cons:
    Absolutely none!

    I'm in love!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's hard to find a decent audio only receiver at a decent price. This fills the bill much to my liking. I got this for my garage & garden. Since I live out in the sticks, pulling in radio stations is limited. With this, I can receive Pandora and about 5 other internet services crystal clear without having to keep the computer on. Also, if you like you can pull in, just about any radio station in the world without signing up for anything. I absolutely love this receiver! My only negative is the lack of directions. You're pretty much left to yourself figuring out how to set it up for your internet services. Once you have it set up, you're done. Next time you turn it on; you don't have to set it up again. If you're somewhat competent with a computer, you will figure it out though.
    Pros:
Does exactly what I was looking for!
    Cons:
    Lack of directions

    Very good for the price

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to drive a pair of Polk Lsi15 (4 ohm) speakers. The hardest part was getting it out of the box, but ten minutes afterwards I heard the Polks. We also have a Yamaha home theater receiver, which was quite a burden to set up compared to this 2 channel only receiver. The sound quality is good, but these speakers will eventually need a much higher rated amplifier. As for the USB dongle, it was difficult to setup, the instructions are poor, and even once we got it working I found it hard to use, so it went back to Crutchfield. The receiver itself is very good, easy to use, and has many useful features without the unnecessary hassle of the 5 or 7 channel setup. I would buy another in a minute, but we have too much gear as it is.

    Great stereo receiver

Written By JPL, CHS, SC on Thursday, March 07, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this receiver specifically for the ability to connect my iphone 4S via the USB port. I had been using RCA patchcords to connect to my old receiver which was far from ideal. An unexpected plus was that this new receiver's remote control actually works with the iphone 4S, which I did not expect. This eliminates the need for the optional ipod/iphone dock. I plan to download all of my music to flash drives to play via the receiver's USB port. This unit replaces a 14+ yr. old Onkyo that still works and sounds as good as the day I bought it from Crutchfield. I have not yet tried to stream any music (e.g. Pandora) via ethernet or wireless adaptor. All in all, this receiver is an excellent value for someone looking for a quality stereo (not A/V) receiver with lots of useful options.
    Pros:
Onkyo quality, USB port, input for turntable. Options for Pure, Direct and Enhanced processing of digital input. Very good FM tuner (much better than the receiver it replaced).
    Cons:
Markings for dials and knobs are next to impossible to read against the black background of the receiver. No switched electrical outlets on rear of receiver (for attaching powered antenna, etc.)

Previously, I had Harman Kardon stereo receivers, and I was pleased with the sound delivered. My decision to buy Onkyo was very rewarding because of the assistance of Crystal, from Crutchfield. Now my Bose 301 speakers really swing, with very good bass and treble. I am very happy with Onkyo.
    Pros:
    Good FM reception, excellent sound.
    Cons:
    None at this time.

    Excellent Bargain

Written By Ome Gé, Brussels, Belgium on Wednesday, January 16, 2013

Got it a week ago and finally found some time to get it out of the box ... easy set-up, not being an ICT expert, I was able to hook it up to my wireless home network in no time (using the wireless adapter via the usb-port) and listen to plenty of radio stations; downloaded the android app and again connected in just seconds :-) ! streaming works as it should. It takes a bit getting used to the two line display to set it up but once you've got the hang of it - no problem. The sound is already pretty impressive being hooked up to my old speakers; still awaiting delivery of my Focals 706v ... should be any day now, can't wait!
    Pros:
Good amp with enough power including network functionality at an affordable price!
    Cons:
Two line display - other than that, great thus far!

Real nice unit for the price. It was recommended by the Crutchfield advisor based on the setup I have in place and turned out to be a great suggestion!
    Pros:
Excellent value for the price. Easy setup. More options for playing music than you could possibly need. Excellent sound. When combined with the wireless connector, many free internet music options as well as some for additional fee such as XM radio.
    Cons:
An equalizer would be a nice addition. Not a compact unit.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit was recommended as a replacement for a 110 RMS/channel Technics receiver which appeared to be failing. It has a few features that the Technics did not have like a USB input on the face. It is ok but presents 2 problems for me one more serious than the other. It appears underpowered to push a pair of original 901s which are power hogs but brilliant. the sound appears less brilliant now than it did with the 110 watt technic when it was working. I don't know if there is a good alternative but I am less than thrilled with the sound. Problem 2 is that these circa 1969 Bose come with an equlizer with no on/off switch that had plugged into the un-switched power receptacle built into the back of the Technic and its 2 predecessor amplifiers and receivers. the ONkyo does not have one so I am stuck with plugging and unplgging the equalizer into the power strip each time I use the unit.
    Pros:
    convenient features
    Cons:
underpowered for this application and no electical power in plug

A welcome addition to my home

Written By TomS, Hawaii on Thursday, January 10, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First I have to give a disclaimer that I just got it set up last week so haven't had the time to figure out all it can do. But my initial impression was very good. It is a solid and beautifully crafted receiver and came well packaged with no damage whatsoever, which is remarkable given that it came via ground shipping across the country. It seemed like it took a while to get here but hey, it came all the way to Hawaii for FREE so no big deal. I have it connected to a pair of Bose 201's and it powers them well- clear and well balanced sound. I have also connected it to my HDTV via the optical connection and it sounds great for movies and games without having to find a place for 6 speakers and the wires to go with them. Keep in mind I have a small place and I'm going from TV only audio so it's perfect for me. I really like that with the gazillion inputs, features, and capabilities of this receiver, I can build my home audio system a little at a time as my budget allows, and with an emphasis on music not having an obnoxious home theater system. I only hope it survives for 25+ years like my Dad's old Onkyo, but with their quality, I'm sure it will. If you are reading this review, buy this receiver and you will NOT be disappointed! Thanks Crutchfield for your rock-solid service and support.
    Pros:
Tons of features and capability, great sound, solid quality
    Cons:
The only minor con is it is missing an aux input mini-jack for portable mp3 players

    Onkyo TX-8050

Written By Anonymous, Decatur, GA on Thursday, January 03, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I called Crutchfield to let them know it was time to upgrade from my 16 year old Panasonic receiver. I purchased an Internet connected Panasonic TV a few years ago and had no way to send its audio through my old machine, as the TV outputs are only HDMI and optical digital. Crutchfield advised this Onkyo unit as I only wish to power 2 speakers. The box arrived promptly and, armed with an overpriced optical digital cable from my local "Shack," I set up the Onkyo. Loved the Internet radio. Other components (game system, CD player, DVD player) all worked fine. Had no trouble getting things running, except no sound from the TV. Turned off the TV speakers and reprogrammed the assignable optical port, as per instructions. No dice. Called Crutchfield, who advised I had done everything correctly. Finally invited some engineer friends over, who researched that the Onkyo is not compatible with Dolby sound, which is what my TV was sending out. I was left with no other choice but to return it and select a different device with HDMI ports. Crutchfield service was spectacular as usual. My recommendation to others considering this unit is to know its limitations. I appreciated its simplicity as I am not a major audio gearhead, but it turned out to be too simple (no HDMI) for my needs.
    Pros:
Simple, great Internet radio options, front USB port
    Cons:
Limited inputs and compatibility with some components
