About the Pioneer DEH-P8400MP

Pioneer knows that variety is the spice of life. That's why their versatile DEH-P8400MP receiver plays MP3 files stored on CD-R or CR-RW as well as audio CDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, and even Windows Media (WMA) files!

Pioneer knows that variety is the spice of life. That's why their versatile DEH-P8400MP receiver plays MP3 files stored on CD-R or CR-RW as well as audio CDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, and even Windows Media (WMA) files!

Your tunes will get a one-two sonic punch with MOSFET50 4-way high power to rev 'em up, plus the tone-shaping clout of Easy EQ to get 'em sounding great! Five EQ presets ("Super Bass," "Powerful," "Natural," "Vocal," and "Flat") can be modified by the 3-band parametric EQ and saved as a custom user preset (one per source).

Sound Focus EQ fine-tunes the stereo image with separate front and rear tone settings. Two factory presets are available: one boosts the treble up front and the bass in the rear, while the other boosts the treble and bass up front, and just the bass in the rear. There's also a customizable user preset, and a seat position selector.

The detachable front panel motors down and out to the perfect angle for operating the controls and for viewing Pioneer's bright Organic EL display. High-resolution graphics, screensavers, animations — the amazing Organic EL display handles 'em all with 24/7 visibility. Its wide viewing angle solves low-in-the-dash installation issues. And a second display provides basic system info when the receiver is closed.

Organic EL also reads out CD Text from encoded discs. If your discs aren't text-encoded, you can personalize 48 of them with disc titles (100 with a CD changer).

A wireless remote is included.

Features

Motorized Dual Display: The new motion mechanism adds a DIN-sized OEL display behind the original face of the unit. In its normal state, the rotary knob, preset buttons and LCD screen reside in a DIN face plate area. When the open button is pressed, the face plate motorizes in a slide down motion to reveal an OEL panel display with a 128 x 33 pixel resolution, doubling the display area. All music information is viewed on the bright, easy-to-read OEL display.

Organic EL Display: The OEL display features incredible brightness, clear readability, wide-angle viewing and full-motion 3D graphics. Because OEL creates its own electroluminescent light, its brightness is resistant to washing out in sunlight.

Entertainment Display Modes: You may select one of the following 15 Entertainment Display Modes: Source Icon Display, Background Visual 1 (moving grid background), Background Visual 2 (swirling line pattern), Background Visual 3 (moving gears), Background Visual 4 (moving light pattern), Background Visual 5 (moving pentagon), Background Visual 6 (moving geometric shapes), Spectrum Analyzer 1, Spectrum Analyzer 2, Level Indicator 1 (two analog VU meters), Level Indicator 2 (two level meters), Level Indicator 3 (two pentagon level meters), Movie 1 (person on a WaveRunner riding with swimming dolphins), Movie 2 (flying space shuttle), or Entertainment Clock (clock with moving shapes in the background).

Display Brightness: The display brightness can be adjusted from 0 to 15.

Demo Modes: This unit has a Reverse Demo Mode and a Feature Demo Mode. In Reverse Demo Mode, if you do not perform an operation for a period of 30 seconds, the display begins reversing colors. It continues reversing colors every 10 seconds until a button is pushed. When the unit is turned off, the Feature Demo Mode is activated. The Feature Demo Mode displays the unit's different features and capabilities using moving graphics.

MOSFET50 Internal Amplifier: This receiver is equipped with a 50 watts x 4 (peak) MOSFET amplifier for low distortion, high power output. The amplifier is strong enough to power small subwoofers to moderate volume levels in compact cars and pickups. For higher volume levels from subwoofers, an optional amplifier may be connected to the provided sets of preamp outputs.

XM Satellite Radio Tuner Compatible: This unit can control the optional Pioneer XM tuner (sold separately). The optional tuner will allow you to receive XM Satellite Radio. XM Satellite Radio programming features up to 100 channels of digital-quality music, news, talk, sports, entertainment, and children's programming. XM transmits these channels from its studios directly to consumers nationwide via two high-powered commercial satellites. For monthly subscription fee, you can receive the XM signal in your car and home using small car phone-sized antennas and XM-capable radios.?

Easy EQ Curves: This model has "SUPER BASS", "POWERFUL", "NATURAL", "VOCAL", "CUSTOM 1", "CUSTOM 2" and "FLAT" preset EQ curves. The "CUSTOM" curves are ones that you create and store in memory; a different "CUSTOM 1" curve may be set for each source, and the "CUSTOM 2" curve is one that will be the same for all sources.

3-Band Parametric Equalizer: This unit includes a 3-band parametric EQ with Selectable Q Factor. You may select a low (40, 80, 100 or 160Hz), mid (200, 500, 1k or 2kHz) and high frequency (3.15k, 8k, 10k or 12.5kHz) to boost or cut within a range of -6dB to +6dB. The Q factor (slope of the boost or cut) may be selected from one of the following four options: 2N (narrow), 1N, 1W and 2W (wide). Selecting a narrow (steep) Q factor results in frequencies around the center frequency to be affected less by the boost or cut than they are with a wide Q factor. This feature is useful for taming frequency response problems caused by the dimensions, materials and speaker locations of a vehicle.

Selectable Bass and Treble Cut-off Frequencies: The cut-off frequencies for the bass and treble controls can be set independently of the 3-band parametric equalizer adjustments. The bass cut-off frequency can be set to 40Hz, 63Hz, 100Hz or 160Hz. The treble cut-off frequency can be set to 2.5kHz, 4kHz, 6.3kHz or 10kHz. The bass and treble controls have an adjustment range of -6 to +6.

Sound Focus Equalizer (SFEQ): The SFEQ feature is made to enhance the soundstage in the front of the vehicle by increasing the clarity of vocals and instruments. There are two primary SFEQ modes ("FRT1" and "FRT2"), and there is a "CUSTOM" mode. The "FRT1" mode boosts the treble on the front outputs while boosting the bass on the rear outputs; when this mode is selected, treble adjustments affect the front channels only, and bass adjustments affect only the rear channels. The "FRT2" mode boosts the treble and bass on the front outputs while boosting only the bass on the rear outputs; when this mode is selected, treble adjustments affect the front channels only, and bass adjustments affect the front and rear channels. You may select "HI" or "LOW" operation for the "FRT1" and "FRT2" modes; the "HI" setting of each mode provides a more pronounced effect than the "LOW" setting. If you adjust the bass or treble setting while an SFEQ mode is on, the adjustment is applied to the selected SFEQ mode and that setting is kept in memory as the "CUSTOM" SFEQ mode. The SFEQ feature also includes a seating position setting that helps tailor the sound to where people are sitting in the vehicle.

Adjustable Loudness: You can select "Low", "Mid" or "High" for different levels of loudness compensation.

Automatic Sound Levelizer (ASL): During driving, road noise in the car changes according to the driving speed and road conditions. The Automatic Sound Levelizer monitors the road noise and automatically increases the unit's volume level, if the road noise becomes greater. The sensitivity of this feature can be set to one of five levels.

High-pass Filter: When you don't want sound in the subwoofer frequency range output from the front and rear speakers, you may activate the built-in high-pass filter. You may select a filter frequency of 50Hz, 80Hz, or 125Hz.

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function prevents radical leaps in volume when switching between sources. To use this function, you compare the volume level of the different sources (AM, CD/Changer) to the FM level, then you can adjust each source level to match the FM level. Since the reference level is based on the FM volume, SLA is not possible on FM.

MP3 Playback: This unit can play MP3 files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. This unit is compatible with constant and variable bit rates from 8kbps to 320kbps. During MP3 playback, the following functions are available:

  • Folder up/down
  • Track up/down
  • Track audible search
  • Folder Repeat Play: repeats the current folder

  • ID3 Tag Display: displays ID3 Tag information for tracks that have been recorded with ID3 tag information

WMA Playback: This unit can play WMA files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. This unit is compatible with constant and variable bit rates from 48kbps to 192kbps. During WMA playback, the following functions are available:

  • Pause
  • Resume Play: if the unit is shut off or switched to the tuner mode while an WMA file is playing, the next time CD is selected as the source, playback will resume from the point where it left off
  • Title Display: displays titles for tracks that have been recorded with title information

CD-R/CD-RW Skip Function: Some CD-R/W recorders allow you to assign skip ID tags to tracks that you never want to hear. When a track has been assigned a track skip ID, compatible units will recognize the skip ID information and skip over that track. This player recognizes track skip IDs, so CD-R and CD-RW discs with skip ID information will be played back as intended.

CD Text Capable: When used with a CD Text encoded CD, this unit will display the CD Text information.

Disc Title Memory: Titles of up to 10 characters each can be entered into memory for up to 48 discs. When a compatible changer is connected, titles of up to 10 characters each can be entered into memory for up to 100 discs in the changer.

Tuner: This receiver is equipped with Pioneer's proprietary Supertuner III, which provides excellent AM and FM performance.

Subwoofer/Non-fading Preouts: In addition to the front and rear preamp outputs, there is one set of outputs that may be set for "subwoofer" or "non fading" output. When set to "non fading", the signal is full range and the output level is user selectable from -6 to +6. When set to "subwoofer", the outputs are non fading, and they may be set for normal or reverse phase, 50Hz/80Hz/125Hz low-pass output, and the level is user selectable from -6 to +6.

Optional Aux Input: When used with item 130CDRB10 (sold separately) or item 130CDRB20 (sold separately), this unit can accept input from an auxiliary source, such as a portable CD or MD player. When item 130CDRB10 is used, a CD changer cannot be connected to this unit. Item 130CDRB20 allows you to connect an optional Pioneer CD changer and an auxiliary source to this unit.

Dimmer Feature: This unit is equipped with a wire that Pioneer calls an illumination lead, however, it acts as a dimmer lead. When the illumination wire of this unit receives power and the dimmer feature has been turned on in the "Initial Setting" menu, the display will dim to a preset level. Note: When the power and constant wires are connected and the illumination wire is supplied with voltage (when you turn your lights on), the button illumination remains on even if the unit is turned off completely.

Cellular Mute: This feature mutes or attenuates the unit's audio output when a cellular call is received, then restores the level once the call is over. To use this feature, you must have a cellular phone with a muting output that can be connected to the muting input wire (yellow/black lead) of this unit.

Warning Tone: If the front panel is not detached from the head unit within 5 seconds of turning off the ignition, a warning tone will sound. This feature can be turned On or Off.

Changer Controls

Changer Controls: In addition to basic disc navigation features, this unit has the following changer controls: pause, direct disc access, disc intro scan, track intro scan, track repeat, disc repeat, all disc repeat, disc random, and all disc random.

ITS (Instant Track Selection) Programming: The ITS function can be used to program automatic playback of up to 99 tracks per disc for up to 100 discs. With changers sold before the CDX-P1250 and CDX-P650, up to 24 tracks can be stored in the playlist.

Disc Title Memory: Titles of up to 10 characters each can be entered into memory for up to 100 discs.

Disc Title List: This feature allows you to display disc titles that you have entered. From the list, you can select a disc for playback.

CD Text Display: When used with a CD Text compatible Pioneer CD changer, this unit will display the titles of CD Text encoded discs that are played in the changer. When playing a CD Text disc on a CD Text compatible changer, you cannot switch to the Disc Title Input mode. CD Text disc titles, artist names and track titles longer than 10 characters may be scrolled to reveal the entire string of text.

CD Sound Quality Adjustment: Using the "COMP" (compression) and "DBE" (dynamic bass emphasis) functions, you can adjust the playback quality of the changer. Each function may be set to one of two levels or off. The "COMP" function compresses the audio signal to eliminate distortions caused by the imbalances between the loudest and softest sounds when played at high volumes. The "DBE" function boosts bass frequencies to give your music a more full sound. Note: For these functions to work, they must be supported by the Pioneer CD changer.

Note

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the Time Display has been turned on, pressing and holding the source button turns off audio output, but the clock display remains on. When the Time Display has not been turned on, pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely. This unit's clock is "keyed" only when the Time Display has been turned on. When the Time Display has not been turned on, the unit is off and power is supplied to the power and constant wires, nothing illuminates. Note: When the power and constant wires are connected and the illumination wire is supplied with voltage (when you turn your lights on), the button illumination remains on even if the unit is turned off completely.
