AudioQuest

Our take on the AudioQuest G-Snake

by Kristen Schaub

AudioQuest's G-Snake analog audio cables use a combination of quality materials and thoughtful design to transfer signals with minimal noise and signal loss.

AudioQuest G-Snake

Each cable features two solid copper conductors to resist electrical and magnetic interference that can add brittleness to the sound. The center conductor is surrounded by a layer of PVC insulation, which prevents information smearing and keeps the sound natural. Triple shielding surrounds both conductors, eliminating almost all electronic noise, for the cleanest signal possible.

G-Snake cables feature precision gold-plated RCA connectors attached with AQ solder for a low-distortion connection. All solder tends to impede the signal, but AudioQuest's special solder blend has been optimized to provide a solid connection and excellent performance.

Highlights:

  • two solid 24-gauge Long Grain Copper conductors per cable
  • PVC insulation
  • triple shielding (foil/mylar/foil) minimizes interference
  • conductors labeled for proper direction of signal flow
  • RCA plugs are gold-plated to resist corrosion
  • black/blue textile braid jacket
  • warranty: 5 years
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

We stay on top of new products and technologies to help people make informed choices.

    Features

Conductors: G-Snake has identical conductors for the positive and ground connections. Underneath the 100% coverage foil shield is a bare conductor, exactly the same as the insulated center conductor. The conductor under the shield does double duty as a low distortion audio connection, and as the drain wire connecting the shield to ground.

Metal: G-Snake's LGC (Long Grain Copper) allows a smoother and clearer sound than cables using regular OFHC (Oxygen-Free High-Conductivity) copper. OFHC is a general metal industry specification regarding "loss," without any concern for distortion. LGC has fewer oxides within the conducting material, less impurities, less grain boundaries, and definitively better performance.

Insulation: The PVC used in G-Snake has too much loss to be used in a quality video cable, but it has a very benign distortion profile through the audio range, keeping G-Snake's sound pleasant and natural.

Terminations: Precision gold plated plugs are carefully attached with the very best solder. Through choice of flux and metallurgy, audioquest solder has been optimized to make a low distortion connection. AQ Solder does not have a high silver content because the more silver there is in solder, the more difficult it is to make a good connection.

I got these on sale to replace my Evergreens. They were good but these opened up the soundstage, improved separation, and tightened the bass up and made it punchier. Add to this the price and smokin hot shipping from the boys at CF and you got a deal my friend. Get Em before they run out!!! Take it from a white haired audiophile...for the bucks they can't be beat. $9.99 each...what do you want, an egg in yer beer!!!

to connect my new sub-woofer I needed a longer cable and found that this set was available to me at a sale price (i believe it was what is called Black Friday). sounding like more than i really needed i was in a sporty mood and went for them, imagining i was getting a fairly straight forward, quality set of cables that could be had for less somewhere else... but i am spoiled by one stop shopping. received, opened, i was surprised by the gold-plating which i apparently did not pick up on in my discussions with the helpful Crutchfield tech-sales fellow; and then that they were separates - not bound to each other but separate strands with white and red id arrows on the plug. if you care about such things they are a pleasure to look at slithering across your floor and 'feel' good when you handle them because of the woven fabric covering (not unlike bungee-cords but without the stretch). They were precisely what i required with the added benefit of feeling more like a minor component than a simple accessory. nice stuff, these...
    Pros:
    utilitarian, aesthetically pleasing
    Cons:
makes your other cables look like ...what they are.

    Really Nice

Written By Anonymous, PA on Sunday, October 07, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've never been one to buy expensive cables, since they really can't improve your sound. What they can do is make sure that your sound isn't degraded at all. These do that job very well.

I like the look and the build quality of these cables. Normally that wouldn't matter, however, I move these cables around a lot. I also wrap them for travel often, so the build quality helps them hold up to that.

As far as price... I'm not sure they're really worth it unless you NEED a cable that will hold up to a lot of stresses. In my opinion, these are great... but ask yourself, do you need them?
    Pros:
    Great quality, looks awesome
    Cons:
    Price... performance?

Good value for a high quality cable

Written By GregBur, San Antonio, TX on Sunday, August 26, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this cable to connect a PS Audio pre-amp to a pair of Outlaw M2200 amps to replace a very cheap generic cable that would randomly drop the left channel, probably due to a bad connection inside the cable itself. The outputs on the preamp are about seven inches apart which puts a lot of strain on most cables have both left and right in a single jacket. Since this is packaged as two separate cables, one for each channel, it worked perfectly for my application. I'm a "cable skeptic" with regard to whether or not the sound quality of my system improved. It _SEEMS_ to have improved, but that may just be placebo. Regardless, it was well worth the price of admission.
    Pros:
Good build quality. The cable is very flexible but doesn't feel cheap.
    Cons:
I would have liked the RCA connectors to grip the jacks a bit tighter, hence the 4-star rating. I use AudioQuest Evergreen cables for all of my other analog interconnects and they have a nice, snug grip on the RCA jack.

As I stated in the evergreen review, I just replaced all of my 25 year old RCA cables. Old cables were Nakamichi "top of line at one time". Yes I could tell a differance in sound quality.

Bought these cables since I saw a recommendation for Audioquest products on an audio forum. Wasn't expecting much since I was already using some old Monster cables that were good. But I was surprised by the the improvement in the music I heard. The music overall got clearer, the soundstage became bigger, and made it more enjoyable. Now I'm interesting in getting more products from Audioquest since they offer great products at good prices. I would recommend these cables.

I used these cables to connect a new Cambridge 550C cd player to a vintage Yamaha A1020 integrated amp a month ago and the results are excellent! The signal quality is clean and workmanship of the cable is excellent. The connection has a taut just right feel to it and the length of one meter worked perfectly. And they were an excellent value for this price on sale!

    Nice!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Really nice cable. Replaced another well known brand cable because after reading the specs, it just made since. I think some cables are like throwing a "blind eq" into your audio by using multiple gauge strands of copper, other materials and "technology". Where as this is just one solid piece of long grain copper. Audio does sound more accurate and precise, believe it or not. If there's one thing besides having a good quality amp, it's feeding it a clean and accurate signal before amplification. I believe these cables do that. I also like that I can disconnect these cables without wondering if I'm going to rip off the rca connections on my equipment. As I have done that with those other well known brand cables.
    Pros:
Transfers a nice clean signal and the connections are tight. Not overly tight.
    Cons:
    None
