Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Pioneer DEH-3400UB

by Ken Nail

User-friendly layout and selectable illumination
Pioneer's laid out the controls of the DEH-3400UB CD receiver for maximum utility. You'll find convenient buttons for iPod® search and control, plus a rotary knob for volume and menu control. And to complement the sharp styling, you can customize the illumination color to match your car's dashboard lighting — or even choose separate colors for the buttons and the display.

Pioneer DEH-3400UB

Control your iPod or iPhone®
This versatile receiver includes auxiliary and USB inputs on its front panel, so you can enjoy your music from a variety of sources. Plug into the USB port, and tap into your iPod and iPhone's music libraries. If you like listening to streaming content on your iPhone, Pioneer's App Mode USB connection provides cleaner audio than an auxiliary input.

Sound quality you'll relish
Pioneer's acclaimed MOSFET amplifier offers high-fidelity performance with plenty of usable "real world" power that compares to any car stereo on the market. And when you're listening to music files, the Advanced Sound Retriever reverses the compression process to add back some of the sonic info that's lost in the digital conversion. Translation? You'll notice a nice improvement in the sound quality of your MP3 and WMA files.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Pioneer stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and this Pioneer, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

      Display Features

Detachable Face Security: The Pioneer DEH-3400UB in-dash CD receiver features Detachable Face Security. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Note: No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit.

Color Customization: Color Customization lets the user match their receiver illumination to their vehicle's interior lighting. Over 210,000 colors are available to match the illumination of almost any car. The button illumination and display illumination colors can be customized separately for an endless number of color combinations. You can select from 27 preset colors (White to Rose), customize an illumination color (by adjusting Red, Blue, and Green brightness levels), or scan through various color settings (All/Warm/Ambient/Calm/Custom).

Ever Scroll: When the Ever Scroll feature is set to On, recorded text information scrolls continuously on the display. It will auto-scroll up to 64 characters. Set this feature to Off if you prefer the information to scroll only once.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the Clock Display has been turned on, pressing and holding the Source button turns off audio output, but the clock display remains on. When the Clock Display has been turned off, pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely. Even if you have turned the radio completely off you can view the clock display by pressing the clock button. The clock will then remain On until you turn it back Off. When the unit is On you can select between the clock display or the audio track/tuner display.

      Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Pioneer in-dash head unit utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The DEH-3400UB is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the DEH-3400UB are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the DEH-3400UB are as follows:

      • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
      • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
      • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)

3-Way Rotary Commander: The Pioneer DEH-3400UB features a 3-Way Rotary Commander for easy control. You can scroll through your music and audio settings with greater ease using the 3-way rotary commander.

Advanced Sound Retriever: The Advanced Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. Hear the detail, warmth, and clarity, the way the artist intended it, from all of your highly compressed MP3 and WMA files stored on your USB device, iPod/iPhone, and portable media players. By restoring data (especially higher frequencies) that tends to get lost in the digital compression process, Pioneer's Advanced Sound Retriever technology enhances audio reproduction nearly all the way up to 20 kHz frequencies

EEQ (Easy EQ): The DEH-3400UB is equipped with a 3-band EQ with 6 preset EQ settings: Powerful, Dynamic, Vocal, Natural, Custom, and EQ Flat. The Custom band can be adjusted as follows:

      • Bass: +/- 6dB at 100 Hz
      • Mid: +/- 6dB at 1 kHz
      • Treble: +/- 6dB at 10 kHz

Loudness: The Loudness feature compensates for deficiencies in the low and high sound ranges at low volume. You can set the Loudness feature to Low, Mid, High, or Off.

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4dB to +4dB.

2.0-Volt Preamp Outputs: The Pioneer DEH-3400UB features two pairs of 2.0-volt preamp outputs. The unit's rear preamp output can be configured as a fading rear-channel output or a non-fading subwoofer output with a low-pass filter, phase adjustment, and output level control. When configured as the subwoofer output, you can select the frequency of the 18dB/octave low pass filter (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz), select the subwoofer phase (normal/reverse), and the subwoofer gain (+6 to -24).

Switchable Rear Channel/Subwoofer Speaker Output: The rear speaker outputs can be set to provide full range output with full fading capability, or they can be set to provide non-fading subwoofer (low-pass) output. When the rear speaker outputs are set to subwoofer mode, the rear preamp outputs also switch from full range to subwoofer outputs. When set for subwoofer operation, you can connect the rear speaker leads directly to two small 4-ohm passive subwoofers or a dual voice coil sub with 4-ohm voice coils. If you prefer to use a single 2-ohm subwoofer, you can connect the woofer to one set of speaker leads, leaving the other set of rear leads disconnected. The maximum output provided when a 2-ohm load is connected to one set of leads is 70 watts.

      Disc Playback

Compatible Discs: The Pioneer DEH-3400UB supports playback of CD-Audio, CD-Text, CD-R, and CD-RW discs.

MP3/WMA Playback: This unit can play MP3 and WMA files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. MP3 files with a bit rate from 8-320 kbps, WMA files with a constant bit rate from 48-320 kbps, and WMA files with a variable bit rate from 48-384 kbps are supported. The unit is compatible with ID3 Tags and will display artist, folder, file, and album name. Up to 8 directories, 99 folders and 999 files per disc are recognized by this unit.

WAV File Playback: The DEH-3400UB offers playback of audio WAV files recorded onto CD-R and CD-RW discs. The head unit supports 8-bit and 16-bit LPCM (Linear PCM) WAV files with a sampling frequency between 16 to 48 kHz.

File/Track Name List: The Name List feature displays a list of MP3/WMA folders and tracks on a loaded CD or connected USB device, so you can easily access your music. The Name List will also display the list of track titles on a CD Text disc.

Off Insert/Eject: A CD disc can be inserted or ejected with the power off. When a disc is inserted with the power off, the unit will automatically power up and begin playback.

Auto Off Eject: When you eject a disc, the unit will automatically power off (unless you switch sources before ejecting the disc).

Installation Angle: Optimum CD playback performance is obtained when the unit is installed at an angle of less than 60-degrees.

      USB/iPod/Aux Connection

Front-Panel USB Input: The unit's front-panel USB (type-A) port allows you to connect a USB portable audio player or USB flash memory that is USB Mass Storage Class compliant.  Your USB memory device must be formatted in FAT 12/16/32. Up to 8 directories, 500 folders, and 15000 files per USB device are recognized by this unit. The unit is compatible with ID3 Tags and will display artist, folder, file, and album name, plus comments.

      • MP3/WMA Files: MP3 files with a bit rate from 8-320 kbps, WMA files with a constant bit rate from 48-320 kbps, and WMA files with a variable bit rate from 48-384 kbps are supported.
      • WAV Files: 8-bit and 16-bit WAV (LPCM) files with a sampling frequency between 16 to 48 kHz are supported.

Note: USB portable audio players that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the CD receiver's USB port (1A) and the vehicle's ignition switch is set to ACC or On. This unit cannot recognize USB devices via a USB hub.

iPod Direct Connection: The Pioneer DEH-330UB's front-panel USB port can be used to connect your iPod/iPhone to the head unit, via Pioneer's dock connector-to-USB cable (130CDIU50 / 130CDIU51, sold separately) or the dock connector-to-USB cable which comes with your iPod/iPhone. The DEH-3400UB supports audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of your compatible iPod/iPhone.

Note: If you have an iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), or iPhone 5; use the Lighting-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect to the head unit.

iPod DAC Bypass: The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's stored music to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 94dB. The Pioneer head unit supports audio playback of music, podcasts, audiobooks, and music apps stored on your iPod or iPhone.

      • App Mode: App mode lets you listen to your favorite music apps, such as Pandora, iHeartRadio, SiriusXM, Last.fm, Rhapsody, & Slacker from your iPhone (iOS 3.0+) through the Pioneer head unit and your vehicle's speakers. Not all apps will be compatible with App Mode and App Mode will provide only limited (basic), if any, control over the app. Available controls may include - Play/Pause & Skip Previous/Next.

Note: Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

Auxiliary Input: The DEH-3400UB is equipped with a front-panel 3.5mm stereo minijack auxiliary input for connecting external components, such as a portable MP3 player. AUX must be turned on in the setup menu in order to be selected as a source.

      Radio Functions

Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

RDS: The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible AM/FM stations.

BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.

Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 levels of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

      Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The DEH-3400UB comes with an IR wireless remote control. The remote allows you to control the volume, switch between sources, pause the CD, change the display, and adjust the audio. The mute button allows you to quickly lower the volume by about 90% (function that cannot be performed from the front panel).

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

      Nice upgrade from factory stock

Written By Rich, Cedar Falls, IA on Tuesday, February 05, 2013

I recently replaced the stock factory radio in my 2000 Silverado extended cab. I should have done this years ago when I replaced the speakers. Sound is much better now. The unit was easy to install with the information and part kit provided by Crutchfield. Basically match the wires up, plug in, and go. This was the first time I've done a radio install. I spent about an hour one evening getting the wires connected and laying everything out. Spend another hour the next night pulling trim and installing the unit. Simple as that.
      Pros:
I like the adjustable color control, clock, and USB port for my iPhone.
      Cons:
Main control knob is somewhat small for me. I end up going through the menu when all I want to do is adjust the volume. I agree with other users on the demo and instruction manual.

      Pioneer DEH-3400UB

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far I like the Pioneer DEH-3400UB, very much. Ever since it was installed which was one week ago I have only been listening to recorded music on a 32 GB flash drive. I have approximately 500 songs on the flash drive with about 30 GB of room left for more songs. I especially like the ability to turn random selection of songs on and off. The Pioneer DEH 3400UB has great tone, and the controls seem relatively simple to use. I have not attempted to use all the available features of this receiver, and am giving it the benefit of any doubts because I believe that it will meet or exceed all my expectations.
      Pros:
      Looks good, and sounds great!!!

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great upgrade, very nice quality, I've never had any issues with Pioneer's quality. Some of the options aren't necessary, but they are cool, especially the lighting. Sound quality is enhanced and I love the varied options for AUX/USB/CD/ and so on. Having all in one is excellent!
      Pros:
Pioneer quality. Enhanced sound. Generally looks cool and performs well.
      Cons:
HORRIBLE instruction guide, throw it away! To really figure out how to operate it, throw the instructions away and just play with it for a half an hour or so. Also, the demo mode needs to be taken out completely, it's extremely annoying, serves no real purpose and until you figure how to operate it, it just goes and goes and goes. Worst instruction book ever, seriously!

      DEH-3400

Installed in a 1986 Ford Mustang
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to replace the aging cassette radio in my 1986 Mustang GT. Crutchfield was right: it's very hard to remove the stock radio! But the Crutchfield connectors and instructions made it easy to install the Pioneer. I like the color choices--I can match the stock red dash lighting. FM sensitivity and selectivity were important to me, and they're pretty good. Amplifier power is a bit underwhelming, and when it runs out of oomph is makes much nastier noises than the stock radio in my 2005 Ranger pickup. My minor gripe is the menu system. I've mostly figured out how to navigate it while driving. The problem is that it's controlled largely by the one big knob, and in a moving car it's hard to make your hand land on the knob precisely. Bump the knob when the car bounces and you're no longer controlling volume, you're in menu-land. Oh shoot, except that's not quite how I say it when it happens. For car service, there's nothing to match old-fashioned dedicated , at least for volume and tuning.
      Pros:
Like the color choice, FM performance.
      Cons:
The tiny buttons and knob that can be bumped accidentally. Those would be OK at home or when the car is parked. Under way @ 60 mph, it's a lot harder to deal with the complexities.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Upgraded from the factory CD player in my Subaru Outback to this Pioneer unit and couldn't be happier. I only really wanted a radio that could play MP3's, had an AUX port, and also iPod integration. Overall the interface is great, easy to use, and simple. iPod integration works well. Only downfall I found is that I had got annoyed by the volume knob because it was extremely slippery. I found a rubber tire off an RC car that happened to go on perfectly. It even looks like it came like that.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced my stock Subaru Imprezza Outback Radio with this unit in about 30 minutes. Immediately my car audio was 100 times better. The USB interface is perfect as I can listen to music from my phone and charge it at the same time. No 1/8" audio cable is needed. Once you get the gist of how the controls operate it's easy to customize the settings. I didn't really care about the multicolor LEDs when I ordered but it was fun to match my car's color scheme. Overall, great bang for not many bucks. A real no brainer.
      Pros:
Clean powerful sound. Easy installation and setup. Easy operation. Inexpensive

I bought this unit while just trying to get a cheap head unit for a jeep that is left open during summer. I'm very impressed with how well it works for how much I paid.
      Pros:
-I love the ability to choose between 27 display colors, it allowed me to match all the aftermarket gauges in my truck -I love that it picks up and displays the name of songs, radio stations and artists on the screen -I love that you can choose to control your ipod/iphone with either the head unit or the ipod/iphone itself, it's always much easier controlling it through the ipod/iphone!
      Cons:
-It doesn't turn on automatically when you turn on your car, you have to turn it on manually

If you are looking for an awesome head unit for a low price and good looks, this is perfect. When I was shopping head units, I did not want anything over the top such as bluetooth, HD, etc. This head unit looks good enough, especially with the different color options. I am very pleased with my purchase, and I totally recommend this head unit. Well done Pioneer, and thank you Crutchfield.
      Pros:
Great sound, love the color options, USB & Aux hook ups, price

Great radio to replace my 1999 RV factory radio/tape player. I miss the big buttons and simple operation, but I wanted the cd player, USB and external inputs. It is everything I wanted and includes a pocket for my I-Pod.
      Pros:
Installation was simple and true to instructions.

Great head unit for the money

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my 2nd Pioneer head unit purchased from Crutchfield in so many years. Both were installed in different Subaru Legacy's (99 & 03). Each fit without any modifications to the dash. The added benefit of the master sheet and wiring harness were two of several reasons for choosing Crutchfield. The 3400UB is a great unit for price. The display is only 10 characters (my first unit a DEH-3900MP was 15) and there appears to be, in my opinion, too much emphasis on the 200K+ color patterns. The 3400 does have iPod/iTouch control through the USB port (no more external digital adapter needed, yey). My only other issue is navigating through the menus takes a bit to get use to. This and the over emphasis on the color patterns is the ONLY reason I did not give this all 5 stars. Buy it, you will NOT be disappointed with the benefits vs. cost.
      Pros:
great sound esp. when using a subwoofer wireless remote feature rich
      Cons:
      navigating the menus

This unit was recommended by Crutchfield and boy they were right. Sounds better than my previous Kenwood or the factory unit.

I did have a problem with the install in my Mustang. Called Crutchfield on a Saturday morning and they fixed it over the phone. Cutchfield is AWSOME.
      Pros:
Sound is incredible. The changing color allowed me to adjust it to match the rest of my dash.
