Our take on the Channel Master 3018

by Steve Kindig

Channel Master's model 3018 antenna can receive digital and analog over-the-air TV signals in the UHF and VHF bands, including HDTV. The 3018 is recommended for "near-fringe" applications — its large size and numerous reception elements help it pull in signals from distant transmitters. The 3018 is suitable for roof and attic installations.

The 3018 is classified as a Large Directional antenna. For tips on selecting an antenna, and links to websites that help you locate HDTV signals in your area, check out our article on choosing and installing an antenna for HDTV.

Highlights:

  • receives digital and analog UHF/VHF TV signals (channels 2-69), plus FM
  • range is 60 miles for VHF/FM, 35 miles for UHF
  • split-boom design with 30 elements
  • 95"W x 113-1/4"D; maximum height is 22"

    Features

Overview: The Channel Master 3018 antenna is a 30 element split boom design and receives FM, UHF, and VHF frequencies, both digital and analog. It can be mounted on a roof, to the chimney, on a wall, or in an attic.

Mounting: The saddle bracket, crossarm bracket, and U-bolt are used to mount the antenna to the mast. The outer diameter of the mast should be between 1-1/4 and 1-1/2 inches.

Turning Radius: If using a rotor on the antenna mast, make sure a 58" turning radius around the antenna is clear of obstruction.

Grounding: The antenna and mast should be properly grounded. Grounding provides lightning protection for the antenna and your TV set. Note: No grounding hardware is provided with the antenna.

Connections: The included transformer is connected to the antenna tap-off points using the included wing nuts. The other end of the transformer has a female F-type connector. The included waterproof rubber weather boot should be installed over the cable connection to guard against corrosion.

Note: Coax cable is not provided, RG-6 is recommended.

Operating Range: all distances are approximate, actual performance depends on too many variables to predict accurately

    • UHF Channels (14-69): 35 miles
    • VHF Channels (2-13): 60 miles
    • FM Radio: 60 miles

Gain: The average gain across the frequency band:

    • VHF Lo: 2.3 dB
    • VHF Hi: 8.2 dB
    • UHF: 8.4 dB

    Great Antenna

Written By Josh J, Racine, WI on Monday, February 07, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I live about 30-miles from Milwaukee, where most of our stations are broadcast and this
antenna works great. We mounted it on the roof and pointed it in the general direction
and we pick up 38-digital channels and a handful of analog. The picture and sound
reception are so much better than cable. Just remember you will need to purchase the
mounting hardware seperately (tripod, mast, grounding wire and ground rod). This
antenna seems well built and easy to install. We just cut the cable cord and are loving
it! I highly recommend this antenna.

    Channel Master 3018

Written By Anonymous, Bensalem, PA on Saturday, December 26, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had rabbit ears until the change over to digital. The rabbit ears didn't work well with the converter box. I did my research for the type of antenna I needed and settled for this antenna and Crutchfield. The antenna works very well. I get a strong signal with crystal clear reception; even in bad weather. My only problem was with the mast. I only ordered one 5' mast. It didn't give me enough height to clear the chimney. I called Crutchfield and explained the situation. I wanted to return the 5' mast and buy a 10' galv. pipe from a local home center. They accepted the return without any trouble. Even paid for the shipping. I'm very pleased with the product and the company. Thanks.

This Antenna Did not work for me

Written By James, Disputanta, VA on Monday, August 03, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I order this antenna to replace an older larger outside antenna. The antenna assembled easy, and I used a preamp with it. But the new combination did not work as well as the old antenna. I am returning the new antenna and getting the 4228HD instead. I was using the antenna web site to give me the bearing and distance to the stations I wanted to receive. They all averaged about 34 miles. The discription for the 3018 say that UHF should go out to 45 miles, But after the antenna did so poorly I looked at the box and the box says 35 miles.... Crutchfield really helped me out with the exchange!

    Easy installation, good reception

Written By RD, Cincinnati OH on Saturday, January 17, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced an old/larger/existing outdoor UHF/VHF antenna with the 3018,
not disappointed at all. Antenna is installed outside on the existing
chimney mast with new coax cabling. I currently have the antenna hooked
up to two televisions through a splitter. 50' of coax to the splitter, then 25'
to the one TV and 50' to the other TV off that splitter. HD signal quality on
my new DLP/HD television (50' run) is amazing. Installation was easy and
reception is as good as or better then the old antenna. I even called
Channel Master with a question about grounding the installation (old set
up was not grounded) and the gentleman that I spoke with in technical
    support was very helpful.

    Channel Master 3018 works well

Written By William, Westchester County, NY on Sunday, October 26, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed the Channel Master 3018 in about 2 hours on my house chimmney. I turned the antenna to the exact compass degree direction toward NYC transmitters (as found in Internet). I didn't have to make any other adjustments, or get up and down ladders. It was perfect reception. Also, the HD picture was superb. I did not expect it to be better than some cable TVs I compared it to -- but it definitely was better. It replaced an 15-year old Channelmaster with one bent antenna arm (due to wind and age).

    Channel Master 3018

Written By Mike, Old Lyme, CT on Wednesday, September 10, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this antenna to replace a smaller one (70") that I bought in 1985. The hope was that this one would pull in the TV stations better for the transition to Digital. In reality, the smaller antenna is better than this one. Maybe this one is more directional than the old one. Either way, I'll eventually have to (reluctantly) subscribe to either Cable or Satellite.

    Channel Master 3018

Written By Cerise, Wichita Falls, TX on Wednesday, September 10, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy to assemble. We placed it in the attic and had problems at first. I think it was because of the foil-backed roof board. When we moved it to a wall that didn't have the foil-backed board, it worked just fine. We hung it from some rafters with string. To get signals from a transmitter 45 miles away, we had to fine tune the way it was aimed.
