Why would I need an iPodĀ® adapter?

An iPod adapter allows you to connect your iPod to your car stereo, then access your playlists with your stereo's controls - a great idea for several reasons. One, you can scroll through your song titles on your stereo's larger display, instead of squinting down at your iPod. Two, you can route the adapter cable to your glove compartment or center console, so your iPod stays safely out of sight. Three, the iPod adapter keeps your iPod fully charged, so it's ready to rock when you leave your car. And last of all, some adapters bypass your iPod's internal digital-to-analog converter, using your stereo's superior DAC to turn your files back into music.

Our take on the USA Spec iPod® Interface for GM

by Zak Billmeier

You can take it with you. Just because you've got a factory radio in your General Motors car, doesn't mean you have to leave your iPod or iPhone® (and the hours and hours of music it contains) at home. Just install USA Spec's iPod interface — it not only allows you to listen to all your favorite tunes through your car's speakers, it even lets you control song and playlist selections right from your radio. And with your iPhone® connected, you can even stream music from popular Internet services like PANDORA®, Livio Radio, iHeartRadio, and more.

Just mount the compact interface box in a hidden location in your vehicle, and connect the adapter cable to rear of your compatible 2000-up GM factory radio — you won't have to disconnect your CD changer or satellite radio. Plug your iPod into the interface, and you can control volume, source, song selection, and up to five different playlists right from the radio or with your steering wheel audio controls. Or you can switch to "Direct Mode" and use your iPod to access all your songlists. The interface charges your iPod while it's connected.

    Notes:

    • *The iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), and iPhone 5 will require the Apple Lightning to 30-pin adapter (sold separately).
    • Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

iPod Text: Artist name and song title can be displayed on your factory radio using the GM radio's XM band.

None: Some GM radios will only allow disc number and track number to be displayed.

Operation Modes: The iPod interface adapter features the following modes of operation:

    • Direct Mode: In the Direct Mode, the LCD screen and the controls of your iPod or iPhone remain functional. In this mode, you can control your iPod or iPhone's music using the iPod or iPhone's click-wheel or touch-screen. You also have track up/down controls from the GM radio. No text will be displayed on the factory radio in this mode. In addition, Direct Mode allows the playing of streaming music applications, such as Pandora.com, and SIRIUS XM Online radio from your iPhone or iPod touch.
    • Folder Mode: Folder Mode allows you to access 4 folders - Playlist, Artist, Songs, and Album on your iPod or iPhone from the GM radio. Your iPod or iPhone's folders are accessed with the factory radio's preset buttons. You will be able to view artist and song title information on the LCD display of your factory radio. Your iPod and iPhone's screen and controls will be locked.
    • Playlist Mode: This mode allows you to access Playlists and Songs on your iPod or iPhone from the GM radio. When the iPod or iPhone is connected to the GM factory radio via the PA15-GM, the interface scans all available Playlists and folders on your iPod/iPhone and will automatically assign the first 4 Playlists in alphabetical order (they must be Playlists you created in iTunes). Your iPod and iPhone's screen and controls will be locked during connection. The factory headunit will not display artist name or song title information.

Note: To switch between Operation Modes, you will need to configure the dip switches (1-4) on the side of the interface.

App Streaming (in Direct Mode): Direct mode also lets you listen to the sound from your iPhone's downloaded music apps (such as Pandora, iHeart Radio, SiriusXM, etc.) through your factory head unit & speakers. You will continue to control your iPhone's apps & view song/artist information from its touchscreen.

Note: Your iPhone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. You will also need applicable music service accounts.

Auxiliary Input: In addition to the iPod input on the PA15-GM, there is an auxiliary input (stereo RCA) for use with another source, such as a DVD system, satellite radio, or game system. This aux input can be used with or without the iPod connected. To use the auxiliary input on the interface, dip switch #1 must be set to the "On" position.

    awesome product

    Installed in a 2005 GMC Sierra 1500
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love this interface! It maintains all stock functions, and gives you so much! I love the user friendly settings/functionality of this unit! Installed in my 05 Sierra in 20 min! All iPod info of displayed on stock radio and steering wheel buttons operate it too! (big bonus for me). But best of all is the iPod direct feature, where you use the iPod as if it were mobile, allowing you to play games, browse internet while still listening to music through my truck! This product is the best!
    Pros:
IPod direct mode, maintains ALL stock features, super easy install.
    Cons:
A bit spendy but well worth it!

    Great add to OEM stereo

Installed in a 2005 Chevrolet Avalanche
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was a super easy add on to 2005 Avalanche with the Bose system with XM. I didn't want to swap my stereo so this was a perfect way to get my mp3 music available and was super easy to install, especially if you have the XM receiver built in.
    Pros:
    Easy installation, high quality components
    Cons:
A little pricey, some of the navigation through your iPod folders is confusing but that seems to be typical

USA Spec iPodĀ® Interface for GM

Written By George B., College Station, Tx. on Saturday, June 16, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Worked as good as Addvertised in my 07 Chevy Classic with factory XM! Read over the instructions and after setting the DIP switches it took a whole 5 minutes to install! I just left the unit and wiring in the glove box, set it to direct mode and the ipod to shuffle. I never see my ipod or any wiring. Sterring wheel controls work great!
    Pros:
SUPER EASY INSTALL! The hardest part was unplugging the factory XM unit.
    Cons:
    None that I encountered.

Installed in a 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The adapter works just like it should. I was able to install it and have my dash back together within 45 minutes. The sound is amazing through my bose speakers. Even better than my cd player. I like the fact that I can still use my steering wheel controls and be able to display the songs on my existing stereo.
    Pros:
installation is easy using the existing connections without having to cut any additional wires. instructions are clear and easy to follow.
    Cons:
    none.

Slick device (2003 Avalanche, Bose, XM)

Written By Jason, Minneapolis, MN on Tuesday, May 15, 2012
Installed in a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Since I had a factory-installed XM receiver, installation was really easy. Once I understood exactly what I had to do, it took less than five minutes to plug everything in for testing with my iPhone. It took me longer to run the cables back through the dash and figure out where to store everything than to actually get it working. Sound quality is very good and everything (including the controls on the steering wheel) seems to work. Plus it charges the phone at the same time, which I wasn't expecting for some reason.

The one nit I have is that it doesn't seem to reliably pick up whatever the most recent thing played on the iPhone. This might just be something I need to work through the details of; I tend to play a lot of sound through things other than the iTunes app (e.g. Audacity, iHeartRadio) and that might be part of the issue). Even if I can't figure out a way around it, it's not a big deal; once I switch to preset 5 to get control back to the iPhone it's just a couple of button clicks.
    Pros:
Easy installation, good sound quality, preserves all existing stereo controls.
    Cons:
Doesn't always remember what was just playing upon a disconnect and reconnect.

Nice to have iPhone working on my 2004 Tahoe, music sounds fantastic!!
    Pros:
Music and Navigation work great thru factory radio. Music turns down when giving turn by turn directions and returns to original volume.
    Cons:
iPhone calls do not work thru Tahoe speakers must pick up the phone, illegal here in MD if driving. It does turn down the music for you.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Received my order this afternoon and had it installed in under an hour. The sound is great and it works as advertised. My Tahoe has the XM receiver behind the glove box so installation was easy. It took longer to decide where to run the iPod cord. The plug on the cord was a little large and I wound up trimming the covers on the phones to make it easier to connect.
    Pros:
great sound, like the control options
    Cons:
would like a plug that works well with phone cover

    Well worth it

Written By FredM, Charleston, SC on Wednesday, February 22, 2012
Installed in a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Does exactly what it claims to do. I decided a while back to replace the head unit on my 2004 Avalanche, thinking a "modern" system would be superior. I realized that what I really wanted most was to have access to my music collection, contained entirely on my iPhone. The factory system sounds great. Replacing the head unit requires an adapter to ensure that the vehicle's safety chimes function. This iPod interface was the right product for my needs.

I'm glad I read the reviews before attempting to install the unit. A most helpful tip was to READ THE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS COMPLETELY before starting the work. In my case (Avalanche), there is no need to remove the radio or even dash. The instructions tell how to set the small switches on the unit before installing. The settings will differ depending on your display and operation preference.

In my case, the unit is connected into the XM receiver. Again, thanks to the instructions provided, I knew that the XM receiver is in plain view behind the glove box. Merely pressing in the rubber catch inside the glove box gives complete access. The supplied connector is identical to the factory connector, so there is no way to mess up the connection. I spent about 15 minutes at the kitchen table studying the install instructions and setting the switches on the unit. Once in the truck, it took literally five minutes to hook up the unit and run the iPod connector cable to an inconspicuous area of exit under the dash. Cool!
    Pros:
Easy installation. Uses existing stereo, gives full access to iPod/iPhone music collection. As good or better-than-CD sound quality. Can use factory steering-wheel radio controls to advance. Song info shown on radio screen. Still able to use factory XM radio.
    Cons:
If you choose to use the setting which gives full control to vehicle radio buttons, the iPhone/iPod does not display music info. Likewise, choosing complete control from iPhone/iPod disables some control via the radio buttons.

    Okay, but....

Written By JK, Burtonsville on Sunday, February 05, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had a number of problems with the unit. First, a number of people commmented on the difficulty of mounting this unit; they are correct. The adapter harness is only about 6 inches long and it was very difficult to find a suitable mounting location(I never really did)in my 2006 Colorado that didn't interfere with the factory radio. I also had an intermittency in my unit that caused the entire audio system to shut down after about 30 minutes of the playing time. Note that it shut down the whole system and not just the iPod. I checked the connections several times before removing and restoring the factory connections. I also found the iPod controls to be be confusing. (Note, Crutchfield offered to immediately replace the defective unit, but given I had already had the dash apart several times mounting and debugging this unit and didn't really like the controls, I declined.)
    Pros:
You can play your iPod through the factory stereo
    Cons:
Unit was difficult to mount Unit was intermittent iPod control was confusing

    Installed in a 2006 GMC Sierra 1500
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very easy to install. There is NO wire cutting or splicing involved! Plug in and go!! I have an 06 GMC Sierra, w/o cd changer or xm, my factory radio recognizes my iPhone 4 as either XM radio or a cd changer (optional during installation), charges my phone at anytime as long as it is plugged in, I can control my iPod using my steering wheel controls, on the factory radio, or directly on my phone. The sound quality of my music from my phone playing over the radio is crystal clear and it gets as loud as i want it (unlike with the tape player with a cord plugging into my phone which made Lady Gaga sound like she were on a cassette tape). I feel like they thought of everything with this product!! Now I feel like my factory radio is somewhat up to date for 2012 and my truck is actually worth something.
    Pros:
SUPER easy to install, even easier to use, very very great to have with my iPhone
    Cons:
I honestly can not think of any cons

    Good and Bad, 2008 Envoy-Denali

Written By Dan K., Milwaukee, WI on Tuesday, January 31, 2012
Installed in a 2008 GMC Envoy
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The install went okay once you know how to do it. My SUV has the XM hookup so you need to get at it from behind the glove compartment and remove the 2 screws to get at it. Attaching the adapter and running the cable went easier. It uses one of the 2 XM bands and the one it uses displays AUX. I do not know if this is common but my both my XM radio bands (XM1 and XM2) go into AUX mode after different periods of time and the XM receiver no longer plays. Sometimes it is months others a few days before it does that. I found by pulling the fuse that handles the radio I am able to reset the radio and the XM radio works for a while after that.
    Pros:
Easy install if you have XM radio. Pandora can stream thru it and display song info as well as music on the iPhone 4.
    Cons:
It streams iHeart radio but when switching stations it defaults back to the music on the iPhone until the next station loads. It would be better if it would just stick to the app when loading.

I did not have the XM module behind the glove compartment, so you need to remove the radio to install the wire harnesses provided with in the package. Still the installation was relatively easy. I suggest leaving the interface module accessable until you have used the unit for a while and figure out your prefernce for I-pod/I-phone connection cables.

The sound quality is awsome, and the interface allows I-pod control from your radio buttons. Much more convenient/safer than operating your I-Pod while driving.Much better quality than the wireless interface I was using before. I also purchased a blue tooth that plugs into the cigarette lighter which gives me hands free phone operation that plays through the radio.
    Pros:
Easily installed, clear and detailed installation and set up instructions, excellent sound quality.
    Cons:
The unit quit working entirely after two weeks. Crutchfield tech support had me unplug the unit and recycle all the dip switches. Crutchfield support is excellent. Anyway, the unit started working again and I have not had any other problems since. Working OK for about 4 months now.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this in a 2006 GMC Yukon Denali in about 20 minutes. Make sure you read the directions since it should be connected at the satellite receiver side of the XM cable and not the stereo side of the cable. I brought this to a dealer to have it installed and they didn't install in correctly (they used the CD hookup instead). While the interface was okay in that configuration, it is far superior to hook it up via the XM interface. With the XM interface the song, artist, and track all display. You can control the iPod from the touch screen, selecting playlists, artists, albums, etc...
    Pros:
Nice touch screen interface utilizing the existing XM interface on the navigation system. Sound quality is great. iPod can be hidden in glove box. Sound quality is great. One of the modes is "Direct" mode which enables you to still use the iPods controls. This lets you use other applications like Pandora. Also, when in that mode, if you are still using the iPod music app then it is controllable by both the iPod and nav touch screen at the same time.
    Cons:
The touch interface is a little sluggish when moving between playlists, artists, albums. It seems the first song has to start playing before you can proceed to the next list. No graphics are display - this isn't a deal breaker but it would have been nice.
