Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Alpine CDE-124SXM

by Zak Billmeier

If you spend lots of time in your car, SiriusXM Satellite Radio is just what the doctor ordered. Alpine's CDE-124SXM CD receiver comes with the compact SXV100 XM tuner, so you'll have access to over 130 XM channels, including dozens that play music commercial-free. You'll be able to tune into news, sports, and talk, plus exclusive live concerts. No matter what you're in the mood for, chances are SiriusXM has something you'll like. And you can dial in the same stations from coast to coast (and even up to 200 miles offshore — we recommend a boat out there).

Unlike the tuner and adapter cable from the past, the SXV100 sports a small profile, and connects directly to the CDE-124SXM for a straightforward installation. Once connected, you can pause and rewind live broadcasts, plus get a heads up when your favorite artists or teams are playing on another channel. And with an iPod connected, you can tag songs for purchasing later in the iTunes™ store. A XM subscription is required.

Bring your PANDORA® Internet radio stations with you
PANDORA® is a great way to enjoy music, and the CDE-124SXM lets you play it in your car. First, you need to download a free PANDORA® iPhone app. Once your iPhone's connected to the USB input, you can select PANDORA® as a source and use the receiver's controls to navigate your stations. You can rate songs on the fly with the dedicated "thumbs up" and "thumbs down" buttons so that PANDORA® knows what music to play for you. You can even create a new station right from the CDE-124SXM while something you like is playing.

Play your other music, too
Of course, you can play all your CDs, including discs you've loaded with MP3 files. You can also load your files on a USB thumb drive, then pop it in the front USB input. The front auxiliary input comes in handy for connecting another portable player.

Boost the power, build a system
A set of preamp outputs provides a convenient connection for an amp or a powered sub, and you can use the subwoofer level control to dial in the right amount of bass. Use the 3-band parametric EQ to adjust the sound in your vehicle, or choose from one of the six preset options. One more cool feature — this receiver works with Alpine's Power Pack, a compact box that hooks up easily to your receiver, boosting its power from 18 watts up to a serious 45 watts RMS per channel.

Note:
If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

      I expected more...

Written By Ric in NOLA, New Orleans on Friday, May 18, 2012

I like the compactness of the satellite portion and not having to add another box onto another radio and having a separate control. switching channels is kind of a pain, and I hate the volume control. The volume would probably be just fine if all you do is play it loud as the sound quality is good, but I listen to a lot of talk radio and need a level in between the levels it is giving me.
      Pros:
      Built in satellite radio module.
      Cons:
      Volume control.

I have this installed in my 2008 Honda Civic Coupe. Crutchfield helped me to order all the installation parts necessary to get this all working, so props to them. Installation was very easy, and sound quality is great. For the price, you can't beat the Alpine reciever/Sirius XM combination. Nothing compares. I love this thing, no complaints at all.
      Pros:
Looks awsome, Sirius XM tuner included, sound quality

Noticeable sound improvement over the stock GM radio while I keeping all of the speakers the same. Like all of the features and that it charges my IPhone while it is plugged into the radio using the USB cable. I think that it was a value purchase.
      Pros:
Cost, simple to order since it came with everything I needed, sound quality is good.
      Cons:

Easy install in a Dodge Dakota Crew Cab. As usual, Crutchfied supplied everything necessary for a professional installation, and the unit looks and sounds great.
      Pros:
A really great unit for the price. Sirius/XM ready, good power, controls are easy to use, and can play any device you have.
      Cons:
Way too bright at night, and the dimmer only cuts brightness a little. Also, Alpine forgot to illuminate the power button (source button) when the unit is off, so at night, you have trouble finding the darn thing!

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

nice radio setup but the use instructions are a bit lacking. for instance, the ability to use a USB flash drive to play music says nothing about the type of drive that will work. I found the PNY 4GB Attache could not be read but a cheap 4GB from MicroCenter worked just fine. the installation kit, wiring harness adaptor and instructions provided by Crutchfield were top notch and made the installation easy, quick and error free.
      Pros:
lots of features and easy install
      Cons:
lots of button pressing to select functions and one line display that only scrolls through once. if you miss it you have to go all the way back around to see it again.

      ALPINE ROCKS!!!!! :)

Written By Devon E., Round Mountain, NV on Sunday, February 26, 2012

Love the product, got it for Christmas and installed it that day witch was fairly easy to do. Crutchfield dose a OUTSTANDING job at making sure that you have everything that you need for the instal. I am looking foward to compleating my system with all Alpine products from Crutchfield. Superb job Crutchfield and Alpine, you will have my buisness in the futchure.
      Pros:
Sounds great through stock Ford speekers, easy to use, lots of complaments, dosent skip when playing CD's on rough roads, love the USB port, comes in handy with iPod and iPhone 4, SiriusXM is really cool having it built into the head unit because there is no lose wires hanging around and changing the station is simple. All around great product, VERY happy.
      Cons:
The only bad thing that I found is that there is no dimmer feachure but when i have the dimmer mode on AUTO and go to dim my gauges all the way down it starts to flicker so I just leave it on MANUIAL and deal with the bright blue light.

I did a self install in my 1998 Dodge Ram 1500, with the help from the Crutchfield tech folk. I had a little problem with the front speakers not working, and all it was , was a couple wires I didn't know needed hooked together. A 5 min Job. Looks beautiful in the dash and sounds awsome. Subscribed to Xm and it all works great . I would really reccomend this product and the people that sold it to me, they're the "BEST"!
      Pros:
Ease of install, and Tech help was right on the money, Not someone in India!
      Cons:
Display is a little bright at night, but nothing I can't handle..

I have nothing to but good things to say about this stereo overall!! It was very easy to use and has many great features. The catch for me was the simple fact that it had satellite ready built an and a USB outlet on the front. What I thought was real cool was the facy that could play music off a thumb driver to the stereo. Crutchfield also sent all the installation tools necessary which made the job very easy and saved me time and money.
      Pros:
Easy to ues and many great features!! What can you say Alpine makes the best car units in the world!!!
      Cons:
The only thing that made me mad was the SiriusXM company. My parents got me a lifetime subscription for Sirius 4 years ago. When I tried to activate the radio they would not honor the service cuz they discontinued the lifetime membership. In order for me to get sirius service I had to open up a new account and pay $30 a month which I thought was total BS!!! If you have a lifetime membership please don't get this stereo with the XM tuner. SiriusXM will put the screw to you like they did me.

OK unit for satellite listening, but has some limitations

Written By kyflier, lexington, ky on Thursday, February 09, 2012

I've bought Alpine many, many years ago. recently I've been buying Kenwood units and been very happy with them. Decided on this one for my wifes car cause it came with satellite options at a good price (much cheaper than other units but you get what you pay for). First unit had issues, but this great folks at Crutchfield quickly replace it with a new one. Thanks Guys!!! as for the radio, I would only suggest this unit if your NOT into sound quality and exapnding your system to nicer speakers or adding amps.
      Pros:
Great value for cars without satellite radio and you want to add it without lots of money. Navigation is easy and unit looks good. I would only advise you to buy this if installing in a car with factory speakers, no subwoofer and you don't car about blasting your favorite tunes but you want cheap satellite listening. If these requirements don't match your needs, look at other units. Trust me...
      Cons:
Installed this radio in my car and the sub-woofer ONLY works on radio. When switching to aux, ipod, sat or CD the subwoofer will not turn on. Weird, Not really that impressed with the sound quality of the unit, my Kenwood is light years ahead of this model.
Crutchfield response on Monday, February 27, 2012
Update 2/14/2012 - After consulting with Tech Support the issue was tracked down to switched wires. The sub is working correctly now.
