Why choose bookshelf speakers?

Bookshelf speakers may be small in size, but they can deliver surprisingly big sound. Some ultra-compact models even fit on a desktop. Most are right at home in tight spaces like shelves, so they're usually good choices for your home theater's rear channels. For the best performance, try placing bookshelf speakers on solid speaker stands to help the sound really "open up." If you want full bass impact, add a powered subwoofer and enjoy punchy sound that's as deeply satisfying as that of floor-standing speakers.

Our take on the Mirage Nanosat Prestige

by Amanda P.

The Nanosat Prestige may be pint-sized, but it still delivers the spacious, dynamic sound you expect from a Mirage speaker. This compact satellite sports a handsome high-gloss finish to complement your décor, along with some unique Mirage speaker advancements for superb performance.

Innovative design for exceptionally open, lifelike sound
The key to this speaker's big, true-to-life sound is Mirage's exclusive Omnipolar® technology. Thanks to the saucer-shaped Omniguide mounted above its drivers (see "Photos" tab above), the Prestige can disperse sound evenly in a 360° pattern. The result: a deeper, wider, taller soundstage that transforms your entire listening space into a "sweet spot." Mirage's approach delivers a combination of direct and reflected sound that's more like what we hear in real life. And you won't have to stay in one prime seat — you'll experience warm, natural audio throughout the room.

Create your own versatile Prestige system
Build a 5-, 6-, or 7-speaker system using the Prestiges — just add a Mirage powered subwoofer for a complete system. We also offer a high-gloss black Nanosat center channel — it makes a strong anchor for your front soundstage, or a great back surround.

The Prestiges fit easily on shelves or tables. Wall-mounting hardware is also included. Because of the way they radiate sound, they're more forgiving than direct-firing speakers. For example, you can place the satellites high up near the ceiling for a cleaner look.

Overview: The latest addition to the NANOSAT family the NANOSAT Prestige satellites offer a refined crossover design, an improved midrange/woofer, and a new pure titanium hybrid tweeter significantly improving their performance over the original NANOSAT satellites. The Prestige line still offers the same compact design for their cabinets making them easy to install anywhere in your home but they also add a beautiful hand lacquered high gloss wood veneer finish to the cabinet making it even more esthetically pleasing.

    Mounting Options

    Driver Technology

OMNIPOLAR Technology: This design radiates sound in a perfectly spherical dispersion pattern, expanding the sweet spot to encompass virtually the entire room.

OMNIGUIDE Design: A conically shaped cylinder that is responsible for reflecting sound in a perfect 360 degree patter. This unique design guarantees the same tonal balance and dispersion characteristics no matter how and where you mount the speakers.

    • The speaker should be inverted with grille facing downwards when it is mounted above 6 feet.
    • The speaker should be mounted normally with the grill facing up when it is mounted below 6 feet.

Drivers: The drivers used in the NANOSAT Prestige speakers are as follows:

    • Midranges: One 2.75" titanium deposit polypropylene cone.
    • Tweeter: .75" pure titanium hybrid tweeter.

    Enclosure Design

Enclosure: Cabinet is made of a very solid inert medium density fiberboard (MDF) which creates a solid, flex-free cabinet which eliminates music altering distortion. The cabinet includes a high gloss finish.

    Connections

Speaker Terminals: The speaker has high quality gold-plated binding posts to accept banana plugs, spades, or bare wire.

    Mounting Options

Video Shielded: The satellite speakers are magnetically shielded so you can even place on or next to your television without distortion.

Applications: The NANOSAT Prestige is a very versatile speaker since it can be used as a front, center channel or surround speaker. You can use these satellites to create a complete home theater speaker system or a dedicated 2-channel stereo setup.

Note: A Mirage OMNI subwoofer for Home theater or 2-channel application when using the NANOSAT Prestige satellites is recommended.

Mounting: The speaker can be wall mounted using the supplied bolt-on keyhole slot bracket or mounted onto an optional floor stand (MS-STB-1) designed specifically for the NANOSAT speaker family.

Bolt-on Keyhole Slot Bracket: The bracket allows the speaker to be easily mounted to the wall and out of the way. It can swivel 90 degrees left to right. The bracket is removable.

    Prestige Nanosat 5.1

Written By Fabian, Toronto, ON on Friday, March 08, 2013

I ordered these in December as my Christmas present from my wife :-) and I have been floored by the sound quality. The base, mids and highs whether it be listening to music, watching TV or a movie are outstanding. I have them hooked up to a Pioneer VSX-1120 with 12 guage speaker wire and I have not been disappointed. I am getting two more satellites to finish off my 7.1 system. Everyone has been amazed by the sound quality. I would definitely recommend them and the price over the Christmas was excellent.

    WOW

Written By Ramon, Seattle WA on Thursday, September 20, 2012

I got the 5.0 prestige and they are amazing!!!!! They fill the room nicely, no sweet spot to look for. Just calabrate the speakers and you will be amazed. These are NOT for music, so if thats what floats your boat, get something else. TV and movie watch is what these are made for.
    Pros:
    Fill the room
    Cons:
music does not sound that great, good, but not great

    In their place, nothing better

Written By Mike C, Cape Cod, MA on Tuesday, February 08, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

With a reasonably revealing system consisting of tube gear and high-end main speakers I was looking for some rear-channel enhancement speakers to use, very minimally, with a Yamaha DSP-300 rear-channel ambiance processor. I tried quite a few. The Nanosats are far superior to everything else I tried. If used sparingly and not fed low frequency signals, they add a great sense of ambiance. It's not so much behind you as around the group that is playing - in my case chamber and small group jazz. Great bargain.

Very easy to install with included bracket. Only one screw needed in wall which made my
wife happy. Speakers are small and neatly hide into the decor. I used them as rear
surround speakers and mounted them upside down against the ceiling. Provides a nice
diffuse sound field perfect for surround speakers.

Lacking in bass because of size so be sure you setup your receiver to route low frequencies
    to the sub.

4 Paired with a Mirage CC, Infinity PS28 (5.1) and Sony DN1000 in a 18 x 12 room and astounded by the sound quality. These have adequate drivers and when paired with a good sub woofer and a properly configured cross-over they sound perfect.

Very rich sound, clear highs and spectacular quality

These beautiful little speakers hide out and fill in wonderfully. The build quality of these are worth the price. The sound is full and clear. Using them as rear surrounds.

Mirage Prestige System is the Very Finest

Written By Igor, Solana Beach, CA on Monday, January 19, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the Prestige System ( 4 Satellites and a Center Speaker, plus a S-8 Omni Sub Woofer). They were put on line 9Jan09 and the system is amazing to listen to, either soft or very loud. I'm not an audiophile and wear hearing aids but the sound to me is impeccable. They are being driven by my Onkyo TX-SR806 Receiver and I have a Blu-Ray Panasonic 55 Disc Player. This is like sitting in a movie house and truly enjoying a DVD or a CD. I replaced a Bose Accoustimass 6 System with these and use 2 of that systems speakers for my back L/R speakers to make it a 7.1 system. I shall purchase 2 more of the Mirage satellites for the Bose replacements in the near future. The Bose System was a mistake when I purchased it in 2007.
My Son was so impressed with my comments has purchased an identical system for his home in Virginia. These ar well worth every penney of the prive and Crutchfield shipped them carefully packed with on time delivery. A great system to own.

    Very Satisfied

Written By Joseph, Atlanta, GA on Monday, April 07, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

    It came down to
    Mirage and Bose for
    my home theater...I
    chose Mirage and am
    glad that I did.
    First off these
    satellites are
    gorgeous! Nice
    finish with a
    magnetic grille.
    Secondly the sound
    is amazing. I am
    driving them with an
    Onkyo 705. The
    highs are crisp with
    excellent tone even
    at low volume. The
    sound does
    absolutely fill the
    room. The one draw
    back to this is that
    you lose some
    spacial definition
    so some surround
    sound effects are
    harder to pinpoint,
    but the clarity more
    than makes up for
    this. I have them
    mounted over 6 feet
high on my wall so I
    had to mount upside
    down. (One note:
    since they are
    mounted upside down
    the logo is now
    upside down. I wish
    the logo was
    reversible).

    If you are on the
    fence about
    purchasing these I
    say do it. You wont
    be disappointed.

Nice for surround sound, but not for front sound.

Written By marlae, South Windsor, CT on Saturday, February 16, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I heard a lot of great things about these speakers, so I tried them out with an Onkyo SR505 and the setup was just using these two nano's as front stereo speakers. I currently have Bose Acoustimass 3 Series IV Speaker System , live in a small condo where the walls are thin, so surround/floor speakers are out. The NanoStats use reflective technology in there speakers and the sound is lacking clarity at various times as well as bass. They would make great back surround speakers but as front stereo speakers, I would compare to others small speakers. My comparison to the Bose's which have an advantage because they include a bass module (and smaller), I noticed the sound to be clearer with better definition (and cost less). In the end, I could of easily live with these nano speakers if I didn't have the Bose's to compare to.

    Terrific Little Satellite Speakers!

Written By jrssol1, Bloomfield Hills, MI on Tuesday, December 26, 2006

Just got these Nanosat Prestige sats along with an Onkyo 703 receiver (great price from Crutchfield), Nanosat Prestige center-channel, and Mirage S8 sub for use as a surround/stereo system in a 16'x20' carpeted room with 8' foot ceilings (13' typical listening distance), which opens up widely into an adjacent slightly smaller dining area and the rest of our medium-sized condo. All the sats are crossed-over via the Onkyo at 120Khz (Mirage's recommendation) and the LFE low-pass filter is also set at 120Khz. These speakers came very well-packaged, beautifully finished and look great, and the best news is that they sound great -- very balanced, smooth, and detailed (and surprisingly powerful/clean for their size) -- they match up perfectly with the S8 sub (see my S8 review). These speakers offer an extremely wide "sweet spot" in terms of tonal balance and listening area. We can sit in our adjacent dining area and the sound quality is nearly the same as sitting in front of them, honest! However, it should be noted they are not quite as "localized" in terms of sound placement as some of the best front-firing speakers are. This is not a flaw -- it's that Mirage opted for a 30%/70% direct/reflected ("omnipolar") design philosophy to achieve their large listening stage. If you primarily tend to listen to your system by yourself from one critical spot, then these may not be your best option. On the other hand, if you also live your life while listening (i.e., you entertain guests with movies/music, or you listen from different positions), then these ought to be at the top of your list for consideration.
