Our Product Research Team
At Crutchfield, you'll get detailed, accurate information that's hard to find elsewhere.
That's because we have our own in-house Product Research team — they open the box,
verify contents, check the owner's manual, and record dimensions, features and specs.
We stay on top of new products and technologies to help people make informed choices.

Enclosure Compatibility
Features
Cast Basket: The woofer uses a polished chrome aluminum cast basket. This ensures a perfect
alignment on each and every woofer. Unlike stamped baskets, the cast basket
cannot bend or tweak under normal play and wear. Rigidity is important when
trying to achieve strong bass and high SPL.
Poly Coated Cone: The cone material in the
Natural Excursion subwoofers is spruce pulp paper. This provides a combination
of weight and strength and allows high levels of output without cone failure.
The cone is non-pressed and has a 2-layer poly coating which increases the cone
rigidity and lowers distortion.
Convex Dust Cap:
An inverted dust cap is used to increase cone rigidity and improve power
handling by forcing more air through the voice coil. Smooth frequency response
is an added benefit.
Treated Foam Surround: The
2" treated foam surround is resistant to temperature variations and provides the
consistent support necessary for the linear motion of the speaker cone. In
addition, the inherent damping capabilities eliminate the transmission of sonic
disturbances between the cone and the frame of the speaker. This greatly
improves the clarity of the speaker's output.
Aluminum Voice Coil Former: The
voice coil former is black, anodized aluminum for highly efficient thermal
transfer. This allows winding high temperature copper wire in multiple layers
(4-layer in this case) for improved efficiency. This allows improved power handling by effectively
dissipating heat.
Extended Pole Piece: The pole
piece has been extended to provide a more linear magnetic field for the
operation of the woofer. This lowers distortion and provides the woofer with
better low frequency response.
Vented Oversized Back Plate:
The back plate has been stepped deeper to allow the woofer more excursion
without bottoming out. Additionally, the back plate is vented with a radius
aerodynamic back vent, which efficiently and quickly circulates cool air around
the voice coil. This allows for more excursion and increased power handling.
Flat Spider: The speaker's
linear compliance is balanced through the use of a flat spider design. A flat
spider provides symmetrical control of the voice coil through its cone
excursion. Linear cone excursion reduces harmonic distortion for improved sound
quality. This allows for reduced mechanical distortion for better sound quality.
Crossover: Audiobahn recommends
using a 12 dB/octave active crossover between 80 Hz and 100 Hz.
Lug-Lock Speaker Terminals: There are two
positive and two negative inputs for bare wire up to 8 gauge. The wire is held in place by
tightening Allen Head bolts using the included Allen wrench. Using the second
pair of terminals, additional speakers can easily be wired in parallel.
Crown:
The six-pronged crown protects the woofer from accidental damage while allowing
plenty of cone excursion. The measurements in the Crutchfield database are taken
with the crown installed. With the crown removed, the flange height decreases to
0.343" and the mounting height decreases to 0.882".
Enclosure Compatibility
Recommended Sealed Box
Volume: Audiobahn recommends a sealed enclosure with an internal volume
between 0.5 and 1.25 cubic feet. While no ideal volume is given, the manual
notes the larger enclosure will play a lower note, but will not handle as much
power.
Recommended Ported Box
Volume: Audiobahn recommends a ported enclosure with a total internal volume
between 0.75 and 2.5 cubic feet (including port and woofer displacement). Three specific enclosures are listed in the
manual. The "Space Saver" design is 0.75 cubic feet and has one 2" diameter x
6.75" long port. The "Everyday Bass Performer" design is 1.5 cubic feet and has one 3"
diameter x 8" long port. The "Ultimate SPL" design is 2.5 cubic feet and has
one 4" diameter x 8" long port.
