Video: Speaker Cable Basics
Learn about the key things you should consider when buying speaker cable.
Gary: Hi, I'm Gary, and I'm an advisor here at Crutchfield, but I've also been an audio engineer for about thirty years. And there's two really important things that you need to know about speaker cables. You need to know that you have to have them in order to get from your receiver to your speakers, and the other thing is you have to buy them separate because they don't come with either component.
You want to get a good quality cable that's made to carry amplified sound to your speakers. When you're deciding how much to get, make sure you get enough. When you're estimating or measuring, just add more.
And you also want to get the right gauge of cable. The further away your speakers are — the longer your run — the heavier gauge that you're going to need. And it never hurts to just get a heavier gauge anyway because it carries more signal.
You also need to consider where you are going to install it. If you're going to run it across the floor, it's going to be a different kind of cable than you would need for an in-wall installation, or if you are going to bury it or run it across the ground.
Now as an option, you might want to consider some speaker cable connectors. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and they make the installation part much, much easier than just trying to deal with the bare wire.
