Boston Acoustics

My system has plenty of power. Who needs an amp?

You might think you don't need an amp because you have a 400-watt system in your car, or because your new stereo puts out 50 watts a channel. But those are peak wattage ratings, which may boil down to 15 or 20 watts per channel, using the more realistic RMS rating. An amp sends your speakers the power they need to deliver your music with clarity and impact, whether you're using factory speakers or high-performance components. And low-frequency reproduction requires lots of power, so an amp is an absolute must if you're adding a sub to your system.

Our take on the Boston Acoustics GTA-802

by Buck Pomerantz

Boston Acoustics GTA amplifiers use some of the same technologies found in their top-of-the-line GT Reference amps to give your music a powerful boost. And these attractive amps deliver the sonic goods at a reasonable price.

The 2-channel GTA-802 amplifier puts out 80 watts RMS per channel — plenty enough power to rock a set of speakers or components — or you can drive a 4-ohm sub with 260 watts RMS in single-channel mode. Boston Acoustics' Q-Tune™ technology lets you bump up your bass, whether you're running a subwoofer or not. The inputs feature special noise-cancellation circuitry that ensures clean reproduction of your music all the way through to your speakers.

You'll find all connections and adjustment controls recessed on one side of the amp, for a neat installation and easy adjustment. Variable high- and low-pass filters let you tune the amplified signal so your system can sound its best. An optional wired remote control gives you the power to tweak your subwoofer's level from the front seat.

Highlights:

  • 2-channel car amplifier
  • 80 watts RMS x 2 at 4 ohms (130 watts RMS x 2 at 2 ohms)

    • 130 watts x 2 @ 2 ohms
    • 260 watts x 1 @ 4 ohms (bridged)

Controls and Terminals: All the controls and terminals are conveniently mounted on one side of the amp.

    Controls

Gain: Adjust the input sensitivity with this rotary control; the range is 0.2 Volts to 5.0 Volts (line-level) or 0.4 Volts to 10.0 Volts (speaker-level).

Crossover Switch: Choose from high-pass, low-pass, and off (full range) for the crossover.

Crossover Frequency: The crossover (low-pass or high-pass) point is continuously variable from 50 Hz to 200 Hz; the slope is 12 dB/octave.

Q-Tune: Turn the Q-Tune on/off; the boost is +6 dB at 45 Hz.

    Connections

Power/Remote: Three set-screw terminals for connecting power, ground, and remote wires; each terminal accepts up to 8-gauge wire; the set screws are tightened/loosened with the supplied 3mm Allen wrench.

Line-level Input: Left and right RCA jacks for the input signal from the head unit.

Speaker-level Input: Use the included harness when the receiver has no RCA outputs.

Speaker Output: Two pair of set-screw terminals provided for connecting the speakers; the terminals can accept up to 8-gauge wire; the set screws are tightened/loosened with the supplied 3mm Allen wrench.

GTA-RSL: RJ-14 port; connect an optional GTA-RSL remote level control (item number 065GTARSL, sold separately); the GTA-RSL is only functional when the low-pass crossover is engaged.

ATO Fuse: A single 30-amp ATO-type fuse is located between the speaker and power terminals.

    I would purchase it again.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Pretty nice Amp. It is easy to install, easy to adjust, and visually pleasing. Provides plenty of low end for my 4 door Altima while set at roughly 75% gain on a ported 10" Boston sub, in a ported Boston box.
    Pros:
Simplicity, power, clarity (Sub), and price.
    Cons:
Kind of large, adjustment screws/knobs a bit cheesy.

    Great amp

Written By Matt C, Ellington, CT on Saturday, January 05, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This amp rocks. Plain and simple. I don't think this could be a better value. I have it running bridged to one single 12 inch sub, with the amp gain up about 75% of the way. The sub BANGS, and the sound quality is fantastic. Great amp, no complaints.
    Pros:
Great value, small size, excellent performance
    Cons:
    none

Excellent amp powering hertz component speakers. No distortion , just clean power . I'm not hearing things in my music I couldn't hear before. Too bad Boston Ascoutic is getting out of the car audio business , they built some of premium products through out the years.
    Pros:
    Clean power , solid design

Slow at first but better now

Written By ED, MD on Thursday, June 28, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Had some issues with this amp overheating in my Camry. I have it pushing one JL 10 sub. I drive for about 1 hour to work so the amp would cut off around the 50 minute mark of my travel. Very frustrating. So I would have to keep the amp low which was not good for the 300 RMS sub that I have. What seemed to solve the issue is getting a cap for my system. Now the amp is rocking my sub with plenty of power. No cutting off now. I have one other amp pushing some infinity components so nothing to powerful in the car. But very happy now.
    Pros:
    My Sub hits hard now.
    Cons:
Had to get a cap to keep the amp from overheating.

    Solid Amp

Written By Anonymous, Midland, Tx on Sunday, March 25, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall I was happy with this amp. It drives a 300rms Sony 12" Sub pretty good. Even with the gain turned almost all the way up the sound is still very clean and distortion free. This amp looks really nice under my back seat. The hookups are all on one side and recessed. The are also angled down slightly. This made for a very clean looking installation.
    Pros:
2yr Warranty. Low Distortion. Installed Appearance
    Cons:
Leaves me wanting just a hair more power.

Perfect Amp! Wanted to add a sub woofer to the factory Bose system in my car and it powers 2 "12 MTX perfectly. Had to turn the volume over 25...now its slammin at 5. Sound out the subs is clean when the hatch opens.

    Impressive for the price

Written By Brian, Tallahassee, FL on Friday, February 10, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was very surprised that I found an amplifier made by Boston that I can afford. I did not think twice about getting it because I know Boston Acoustics would not put there name on something unless they were proud of it. I bought this to replace my MTX terminator amp that was driving my Rockford 12. I am really tired of everyone writing reviews about subs and amps with a focus on "how hard it hits". I could make an amplifier in my garage that "Hits Hard" and rattles my trunk off. Let focus on how it sounds, after all this is a speaker right? I definitely noticed a difference in the sound quality of this vs. my old MTX. (they are very close in price) The Boston amp sounds cleaner with less unnecessary notes. The continuously variable crossover helps immensely leaving those notes above 80 or so hz to the woofers. I find myself wanting to drive my car just to listen to music. I would recommend this amp to anyone looking to power a sub with good clean sound, and sadly I guess I have to say it wont disappoint those folks looking to rattle my review mirror while your stopped next to me at a red light.
    Pros:
    Variable Crossover, Plenty of power

    Great Value

Written By Zack, Columbus, OH on Monday, January 30, 2012

I was a little skeptical due to the LOW price but I knew Boston makes quality products (I have the Soundware 5.1 Home Theater and LOVE it). I had this amp bridged mono to my Boston G210 ported sub enclosure and it HITS HARD. I wasn't expecting too much from one 10 inch sub and an 80x2 amp....WRONG. Great product, great price, great customer service.
    Pros:
    Value - Styling - Power
    Cons:
    None so far

    excellent amplifier

Written By Adrian, Houston, TX on Sunday, April 17, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I only gave this amp a 4/5 because i believe 5/5 rating is theoretically
impossible, unless of course the amp is made of unobtainium.

This amp gives my Focal 165VR components more than enough clean power.
It truly makes those speakers "come alive.". In fact it would not be hard to
believe that this amp's output is underrated.

One can not expect an entry level amp to be perfect though, it gets pretty warm
during heavy usage, but nothing to really be concerned about.

Once again Boston Acoustics has provided outstanding sound quality to those
of us who don't want to go bankrupt in the process.

I installed this amp to run my JL Audio W1 12" subwoofer and hits beautifully. Turn the
Hertz all the way down 25 and the gain to about 3/4 with bass boost on and hits like no
other. Great price as well. Thanks crutchfield
