Shift into reverse, and your screen willl display what's behind your vehicle automatically. Overview: The Boyo VTL422C Ultra Slim Bar-type License Plate Camera is designed to provide you a clear wide-angle view from the rear of your vehicle. It can be used to assist you in backing up the vehicle, or to keep an eye on an item you are towing. It can be connected to a separate rear-view monitor (such as the Boyo VTM3600), or to many in-dash audio-video head units with a composite video or rear-camera input.

Compatibility: The VTL422C's standard composite video output (RCA plug) makes it compatible with virtually any mobile video monitor featuring a rear view camera input.

Zinc Alloy Housing: The VTL422C's bar-type bracket is made from zinc alloy metal and covered in a black finish with a scratch-resistant coating. The camera's waterproof (IP67) housing is made from the same long-lasting, durable material. The rear view camera can be angled up and down within the bar-type bracket.

Rear View Camera: The VTL422C's rear view camera features a highly sensitive 1/4" DSP color CMOS image sensor with approximately 322,752 effective pixels (656 horizontal x 492 vertical) for true color reproduction and clear picture quality. The camera features a wide-angle lens with a 150° vertical and horizontal viewing angle providing an excellent field of vision behind you in your vehicle.

Installation: The VTL422C attaches to your vehicle's existing license plate frame with the supplied hardware. The integrated rear view camera features an attached 21" video/power/ground cable which connects to the supplied 24.5' video/power/ground extension cable. The extension cable is then routed from outside of the vehicle through your vehicle's interior to your vehicle's display monitor or optional stand-alone monitor (like the Boyo VTM3600). The composite video connector of the extension cable needs to be plugged into the composite video rear-view camera input on your display monitor and the power/ground lead needs to be connected to your vehicle's 12-volt electrical system.

Arrived DOA. Recommend (not doing what I did) dry-fitting before painstakingly running the cable from the rear end to your head unit to make sure it works first.

Don't waste your money

I installed this on my wife's vehicle. IT worked good, but only for a short time. Then is started to worked sometimes and not other times and now it won't work at all. All in about 6 months. Don't waste your money like I did.

Save your money. It is low cost for a reason.

I was beginning to wonder why Crutchfield carries this item with such a high failure rate. Three of these camera were defective out of the box and two others failed after a year. I have to hand it to Crutchfield for no cost returns to me, but the hassle factor... THE HASSLE FACTOR! The first one was out of focus. The next camera worked for a week then started to blank out. The third fogged from water leakage with in months after installing it. The third one worked for a year, but over the winter the case continued to leak and then the camera fogged over here and there. Eventually that camera failed from water damage. Out of warranty I bought a fourth and that one lasted for a year. The fourth lasted longer than the rest, but over the winter the case leaked and then the camera fogged over. Eventually it too failed from water damage. I guess I am the fool. The price seems cheap until you factor the very poor quality and reliability. I love the idea of a camera for hooking up a trailer. I do not usually waste my time writing reviews but with this product I will make the time. Stay away from this product.

looks good, low pro design, but useless. even hooked it up to another vehicle. really excited about taking the time to install something that doesn't work from the factory... the price was attractive so i decided to ignore the reviews. my fault. crutchfield was great about the return though, as usual.

Works Acceptable enough

I give it a 3 out 5 .. .the camera could be more focused and higher resolution. but its a decent overall product.
Pros:
it has a great finish on it. The black is not really black finish though it shines like a deep purple.
Cons:
Its a good product long enough wire but the install instructions are very short and they do not install license plate screws for various vehicles...

Dead on Arrival. Luckily I was able to get to a local shop an hour before they closed on Christmas Eve and got an Audiovox that works great, and was still able to get the car done for my wife by Christmas.

I was unable to install the Boyo and still have my license plate from on. The Audiovox tucked in neatly under the license plate frame.

Also, the video wire for the Boyo was too short to reach the dash in my 03 Expedition, and the power wire was too short to go up my liftgate and around to the reverse light.
Pros:
Nothing, it was dead on arrival.
Cons:
It was broken when I got it. Would not work with my license plate from. Wire was too short for my Expedition and had to get an extension.

Had 2, neither made it passed 1 year of service

First one had a chrome-plated plastic frame and it faded and cracked after one winter. Picture quality was great though. Replaced it with a new one, which I was pleasantly surprised to find came with a chrome-plated metal frame. 10 months later the video signal just went black. Troubleshooted the problem all the way back to the sealed camera unit. Using the metal frame from the 2nd camera, I reinstalled the first camera (that came with the original plastic frame). Worked flawlessly for 3 months then suddenly failed exactly as the other did. This one on a warm, dry summer night so weather wasn't a factor. Very frustrating as installation/removal is very difficult on my particular vehicle.

second time, not good

I bought this camera and it broke a few months later. Crutchfield was great with sending me another however the new camera broke within 3 weeks. Just stopped sending a video signal. The wires are good but the camera went bad again. NOT HAPPY!

I was not impressed with the installation instructions. With the exception of a small notch for wire clearance the unit is symmetrical. There is no means to determine if your installation is right-side-up or upside-down. A call to the manufactured established that the stick-on label on the back is the determining factor. There is NO mention of this in the instruction sheet. A simple arrow on the back of the casting would be a simple solution. They should also mention what size clearance hole is required for the connector to pass through.

Worked great for a few months then started to work intermittently , then after only 3 months died. This camera is terrible and the finish oxidzed and cracked from the cold.

It came free with my system but don"t bother installing it.spend the extra and get the brand name that goes with your system.

This is one of the best looking cameras and it worked well for a few weeks. However less than one month later it started having problems when it got cold. After one trip to Michigan, it stopped working. First the screen was all foggy, then it went to black and never came back. The road salt also badly pitted the finish.
I'm not very happy with it.
