Easy to install and use
The Mechanic with ecoRoute HD plugs directly into your car's OBDII port, usually found below the driver's side dashboard, to access a large amount of real-time info about your vehicle's performance — the same data that professional mechanics use to diagnose problems with your vehicle. The device then relays the information via wireless Bluetooth® connection to your nüvi, which then displays your vehicle's performance on easy-to-follow gauges and charts. The Bluetooth connection with the Mechanic with ecoRoute HD does not affect your nüvi's ability to make or receive calls with your compatible cell phone.

    Garmin nuvi GPS Compatibility: The Garmin Mechanic with ecoRoute HD is compatible with 1200 series and higher Bluetooth capable Garmin nuvi devices. Simply plug the ecoRoute HD module into your vehicle's standardized onboard diagnostics port (OBD II), then complete the easy one-time pairing between the ecoRoute HD and the Bluetooth-enabled Garmin nuvi GPS device.

    Note: Before installing the ecoRoute HD module, you must update your Garmin nuvi GPS device's software. Visit the Garmin WebUpdater for the latest updates & downloads.

    Garmin Mechanic App: Add the Garmin Mechanic app to your Bluetooth-enabled Android smartphone and ecoRoute HD can show real time engine performance data on your smartphone.     Gauges Page: The Garmin Mechanic with ecoRoute HD provides you with complete gauge cluster in one convenient location on your compatible nuvi GPS device or Android smartphone. The information displayed on the gauges page is collected directly from your vehicle. Gauges to monitor RPM, air/fuel mixture, oil pressure, oil temp, coolant temp, air flow, fuel flow,  and air pressure are available. You can select the gauges you want to monitor most and customize screens with various gauge packages. The number and type of gauges displayed may vary by vehicle.

    Fussy but useful

    The real-time info is very useful. However, the start-up procedure is very time-consuming, finicky and annoying. It will not properly connect unless I turn-on the Garmin first, then initiate the app, then wait at least 30 seconds before starting my car; then, most of the the time it will do it's job after yet another 30-seconds or so of waiting. I also find it cumbersome switching between the ecoROUTE app and the map as it requires stepping through several menu-picks or hitting the back button several times to switch between the two modes. The instructions for use seemed a bit limited as well. I still don't quite understand the bar graph display. Clicking on it toggles between 10-minute, 1-hour, and multi-hour (accumulated) performance display. But, the mpg range on the graph seems to change in value from time to time. The graph also seems to be in error much of the time. -that is, the lines don't accurately record history. This is most noticeable on the 10-minute view. Quite often it will show periods of 0-20 mpg, when in reality I was consistently over 40 mpg. I use it mainly for real-time mpg display, which has proven itself very accurate and an extremely useful tool for maximizing and developing good gas-mileage habits. The ecoROUTE app scoring is pretty useless info to me. The engine gauges are awesome, and give me feedback (like coolant temp) that I don't normally have. I works well for what I need it for, but the start-up procedure is very frustrating.

    cumbersome start-up and initiation of connection, inaccurate graphing, multiple steps to switch to other modes (like View Map)

    The ecoroute HD was instantly recognized by my garmin (2595lmt) via bluetooth and have had no issues since installation. The guages are a very cool, neat feature for the gearhead/car lover. I have tried to improve my MPG fuel economy based on the instant information presented to me via the HD receiver (i.e. I notice my chronic "lead foot/ hard breaking more than ever) and think I saving a little money...too soon to create a real pattern. I have not viewd any codes yet but it provides some peace-of-mind knowing I have the option to view/reset should any trouble codes arrive on my '06 subaru baja. Overall, I am happy I purchased it and continue to discover cool new features of the device....GOOD bargin @ crutchfield too!

    Great product!

    First, this product is "connected" via the wireless Bluetooth availability on the top-of-the line Garmin GPS systems or the Kenwood Navigation systems (their GPS is made by Garmin). Simple plug your ecoRouteT HD unit into your vehicle's standardized onboard diagnostics port (OBD II). Turn on your car, follow the directions provided to link up with your Garmin unit. Make sure your plug is securely pushed in all the way into the port and look for the blinking green lights -- indicating the unit is ready to connect to your Garmin GPS usit/Kenwood head unit. Be patient, it takes about 2 to 3 minutes to recognize the ecoRoute HD. Once it is connected, the blilnking green lights turns to a solid blue LED light and you have wonderfully useful information -- that's really cool! Remember to "touch" each gauge on the screen to modify the information. Have fun and enjoy driving more economically!
    Pros:
    Very easy to connect -- plug in, stick on anywhere under the dash. If needed, long plastic ties are included.
    Cons:
    The supplied double-sided adhesive tape to attach the ecoRoute HD to the surface of the front of your dash (near your knees) is a weak adhesive. If it does not adhere to your plastic dash, replace the original tape with 3M VHB "Supermount Tape" found at hardware stores and Radio Shack. It's made for "Hi-temp/Hi-strength."

    We contacted Garmin about Kenwood compatibility with this accessory. Garmin stated that this unit is not compatible with any Kenwood head units.

    Reset Check Engine Light

    It is great to know that the ecoRoute HD diagnostic tool can reset your check engine light. But, it's another thing to know how!

    I'm using my ecoRoute HD with my Garmin Nuvi 3790LMT GPS. The check-engine light has been illuminated on my 2006 Chrysler Pacifica for about 2-weeks now, but engine performance has been normal. I got the ecoRoute to pair with my GPS with relative ease. The OBD-II code displayed by the device was P0456 (Evap System Small Leak). I learned that the device might not reset the error code with the engine running. So, with the error code displayed on my GPS, I shut the engine down and turned the ignition key to the "On" position. I got the error code to reset by only using the GPS. I touched the screen where the error code was displayed, and another screen appeared with menu options that included "Reset" and "Cancel." I selected "Reset" and the light blinked and went out. The instructions in the Owner's manual entitled "Turning on ecoRoute Without Starting Your Car" appear to explain how to reset the code, but are completely misleading. Step-2 says "Press and release Reset." There is a reset button on the ecoRoute device, but it is only used to reset the vehicle profile you entered for your particular vehicle, or to reset the device to factory defaults. The reset option displayed on my GPS screen did the job! Hope this helps.

    Does what it says it will do. Provides good information about your vehicle, and resets the check-engine light.
    Cons:
    Owner's manual is very weak and could be more helpful!
