Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Clarion CZ500

by Zak Billmeier

Talk hands-free in your car with a compatible phone — Clarion's CZ500 CD receiver features built-in Bluetooth® so you can keep your hands on the wheel during your conversations. When a call comes in, the CZ500 mutes the music while you talk to your caller over your car's speakers. Clarion includes a microphone that you can mount in the best spot for maximum sound quality.

Play music from your iPod® or iPhone®
You won't need an adapter to play digital tunes in your car. Simply connect your iPod or iPhone to the rear USB input, and you can browse your music collection using the stereo's controls. That way, you can stash your player and keep it charged while you drive. An included remote lets your passengers control the tunes while you concentrate on driving.

Even more ways to play your music
The CZ500 will play your store-bought CDs, plus recordable discs you've loaded with MP3 and WMA files. You can also load up a USB thumb drive with MP3 and WMA files for even more options.

Sweet sound
The built-in amplifier delivers plenty of power, while a bass enhancer and 3-band parametric equalizer allow you to adjust the sound to your taste. If you're building a system, three sets of 4-volt preamp outputs send a clean signal to all your amplifiers. The subwoofer volume control comes in handy when you're switching from one kind of music to another, like from jazz to reggae. You can use the built-in low-pass filter to get maximum efficiency from your subs.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use this adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Clarion stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Clarion, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

iPod note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

      Display Features

Detachable Face Security: This unit features Detachable Face Security. A hard plastic face-case is provide to protect the detachable face when removed.

Note: A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

H.M.I. Design: Clarion's superior H.M.I. (Human-Machine Interface) Design utilizes a distinctive "starburst" control button array. The headunit's buttons are clustered symbolically for intuitive operation, with a large rotary volume control that is blue illuminated for easy recognition and a cool look in your vehicle.

Digital LCD Display: The two-line, 10-digit, digital LCD display (with black background and white characters) on the CZ500 allows numbers and characters to be displayed clearly in almost any lighting condition.

Illumination Dimmer: The receiver's display automatically dims to a preset brightness when the vehicle's headlights are turned on. The wiring harness includes an orange/white lead that should be connected to the vehicle's parking light circuit in order for the dimmer feature to operate.

Screen Saver: This unit is provided with a Screen Saver function which allows you to show various kinds of patterns and characters in the operation status indication area of the display in a random order. You can turn this function on or off. If the button operation is performed with the screen saver function on, the operation display corresponding to the button operation is shown for about 30 seconds and the display returns to the screen saver display.

      Audio Section

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the CZ500 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the CZ500 are as follows:

      • CEA2006 Specs: 19 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
      • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 watts total)

BeatEQ: In addition to providing 3 preset equalization patterns (Bass Boost, Impact, and Excite), Clarion's BeatEQ lets you freely customize the level and range of the bass, midrange and treble portions of each pattern. You can tune the sound to your liking, depending on the category of music, for a more fulfilling listening experience.

      • Bass Boost: Bass is emphasized +/-3.
      • Impact: Bass and treble are emphasized +/-3.
      • Excite: Bass, midrange, and treble are emphasized +/-3.
      • Custom: Adjusts the bass, midrange, and treble independently +/-7.
        • Bass: You can set the effected bass frequency to 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, or 200Hz and the Q-factor to 1, 1.25, 1.5 or 2.0.
        • Midrange: You can set the effected midrange frequency to 500Hz, 1.0kHz, 1.5kHz, or 2.5 kHz and the Q-factor to 0.5, 0.75. 1.0, or 1.25.
        • Treble: The effected treble frequency can be set to 10kHz, 12.5kHz, 15kHz, or 17.5kHz.
      • Off (Flat): Bass, midrange, and treble are set to 0.

Magna Bass EX (Extend): The Magna Bass Extend feature does not adjust the low frequencies like the normal sound adjustment function, but emphasizes the deep bass frequencies to provide you with a dynamic sound. This circuit boosts bass at an ultra-low frequency of about 50Hz, creating a rich, deep, defined bass rather than the muddy, booming bass of a standard loudness control. What is more, boost levels are dependent on the system volume, resulting in balanced system response and dynamic bass reproduction.

6ch/4V RCA Output: The Clarion CZ500 features 6ch/4V RCA line level outputs (Front/Rear/Sub). The non-fading subwoofer preamp output features an independent level control (+/-6).

Low-Pass Subwoofer Filter: Switching on the Low-Pass Filter (LPF) for the subwoofer preamp output will send only the low frequency range through specified outputs to ensure superb performance with a connected subwoofer. The low-pass filter can be set to 80Hz, 120Hz, 160Hz, or Through (full-range).

Beep: The in-dash headunit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

      Radio Functions

AM/FM Tuner: The Clarion CZ500 is equipped with a built-in AM/FM tuner offering manual, seek, and preset tuning.

Preset Tuning: The CZ500 provides 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. Each AM/FM bank can hold up to 6 station presets, proving you with 18 FM station presets and 6 AM station presets. Stations can be stored manually or automatically.

Preset Scan: Preset scan receives the stations stored in the headunit's preset memory in order. This function is useful when searching for a desired station in memory.

Instant Station Recall (ISR): You can store one radio station in Instant Station Recall (ISR) memory and recall it from any mode (except Power Off). Once the ISR station has been recalled, you cannot tune to another station without first disengaging the ISR function. You can, however, switch to another source.

Local Seeking: When Local seeking is turned "On", only those radio stations with strong radio signal can be received.

HD Radio Ready: With an optional Clarion THD300 HD Radio tuner (020THD300, discontinued), you will be able to receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. This new technology will significantly improve audio quality and reception, as well as include information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display. The add-on HD Radio tuner includes iTunes Tagging capability, so if you hear a song on the radio that you like, you can tag it to download later from the iTunes Store.

Note: Right now there are about 2,000 radio stations broadcasting using digital HD Radio technology in the U.S. To find HD Radio stations in your area, visit the HD Radio website (HDRadio.com).

XM Satellite Radio Ready: The Clarion CZ500 supports XM Satellite Radio when connected to the Audiovox XMDirect2 Tuner (item number 220CNP2UCA, sold separately), using the Clarion XM Passport Interface Adapter Cable (item number 020CCUXM1, sold separately). The XMDirect2 Tuner will need to be programmed for this radio. A subscription to XM Radio is also required for service.

      Disc Playback

MP3/WMA Playback: The unit can play MP3 (8-320 kbps/VBR) and WMA (8-320 kbps) files recorded onto CD-R and CD-RW discs using ISO9660 Level 1 or 2, Joliet, or Romeo formats. Top Function: The Top Function resets the CD player to the first track of a CD-audio disc. In the case of an MP3/WMA disc, the first track of a folder being played will be reset.

Scan Play: This function allows you to locate and play the first 10 seconds of all the tracks recorded on a CD or the first 10 seconds of the first track of all the folders on an MP3/WMA disc.

Last Position Memory: If you turn off the unit while a disc is playing, it will resume playback at the stopping point when it is turned on again.

Auto Reload: When a CD is ejected and left sticking out of the CD slot for 15 seconds, the unit automatically reloads the CD to protect if from damage.

The headunit can recognize up to 999 files per folder and 3,000 total files. Titles up to 64 characters can be displayed while in USB mode. The CZ500 offers the following playback operation of your USB Mass Storage device - Play, Pause, Track selection, Fast-forward/backward, Scan play, Repeat play, Random play and Folder selection.

iPod Direct: The Clarion CZ500 allows you to connect your iPod/iPhone to the headunit's rear-panel USB port using your iPod's USB/Dock cable for audio playback, control, and charging of your iPod/iPhone. This headunit also supports the display of title information transmitted from your iPod/iPhone.

      • USB Connection: The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's stored music to be loaded instantly to the headunit and sound quality to be maximized through the headunit's 1-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 80dB.

      Great Head unit

Written By Raymond, Cookeville, TN on Thursday, November 08, 2012
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I always wanted to have a unit that had bluetooth and can hook up to an iPod very easily. I bought this right before they discontinue it about 1 1/2 year ago. it has great sound for a preamp unit. super clear on Bluetooth streaming. When i added 2 subs to the unit, it made my truck booming down the highway. overall, its a great unit and i wish they have another just like it. the one thing i didn't like was when connecting to Bluetooth, it switches to Bluetooth. And sometimes it won't play music when connected. When you hang up a call, it stops the music and you have to disconnect and reconnect later.
      Pros:
Great Sound USB connection Bluetooth calling It puts the boom in Booming easy installing best buy to get for $140
      Cons:
discontinued Syncing Contacts Switching back to music after hanging up a call

This is the first clarion I've owned that did not live up to expectations, hasnt worked since july 2012, checked all wiring, rewired radio just will not cut on, found my older clarion unit plugged it in, tadah it worked, the cz 500 didnt make it 2 yrs, my father rarely drives the car thus not knowing the radio was inop, very diassapointed in build quality, hit reset you can here it reset but nothing happens, it will not turn on!
      Cons:
      Will not work

Bluetooth Calling Terrible but can be upgraded

I have had the same problems with the microphone - no one can hear me even if I am physically hold the microphone in front of my mouth. However, I came across a software upgrade on the Team Clarion site for the radio via the usb. MAKE SURE YOU FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS EXACTLY. I have not done this yet to see if it works, but it seems like it should. If possible I will post an update to this review after I try the process. I am happy with everything else about the radio which I mostly purchased for A2DP bluetooth streaming from my phone.

My son has an older truck and was not sure what type of radio could replace the old one. The customer service guy was wonderful. Asked me what all I wanted the features to be and recommended a great product. If I ever need anything I will certainly use Crutchfields again and again....... Wonderful company and people involved.....

I really like this unit. It was easy to install, and after a little time it was easy to use. I have not hooked up Satellite radio yet, but as far as IPOD and Flash Drives, this thing is GREAT! Functions great, bluetooth capability is great. One small hiccup was setting the clock. Other than that, great.

I was looking for a low priced receiver (i.e. under $100) to replace my factory unit and decided to spend a few extra bucks on the CZ500. The main draw of this unit for me was the built in bluetooth. Unfortunately the bluetooth is basically useless. Every time I made a call the person on the other end could barely hear me.

The unit functions fine as a stereo but I would have bought something cheaper if I knew that the bluetooth is a gimmick on this unit.

After extensive research and reading review upon review of various head units, I decided to get a Clarion. I picked up this unit because it fit perfectly into my budget. After installation I fired up this unit, and instantly started playing around with it. I have to say I love the EQ on this thing, and its got several other features I haven't even had time to mess around with yet. Compared to stock, this unit gave me much crisper highs, and clean lows which I found to be a pleasant surprise. All in all I give this head unit a 5 star rating based on features, sound, looks, and price.

After one bad unit tha affected only the XM tuning. The unit is great. The sound and features are a big upgrad from my factory Civic radio. The bluetooth sounds pretty good, the Ipod, Aux input, and Sat. radio all sound very good. customer service has been very good. When I had the problem with the radio the guys at Cructhfield sent my entire order over again to be sure the right part was replaced. Stereo for the money, I wouldn't trade it in.

since I did not know what kind of stereo system I had in the truck for sure, I thaught I had the non infinity system, when i was installing the stereo, and running everything I needed for the speakers and future amps and subs today, I found out I had to have an adapter for the infinity sound system, because the amps are attached to the factory speakers and have 8 wires to each side. well my fault for not knowing. I got the head unit installed, and replaced the two front door speakers as well with components. the trick was figuring out what wires went where. the adapter would cost 150.00 at best buy, wal mart didn't have it, and I just cut the wires, and figured out what went where with the factory radeo still in place, after I did all that I connected everything up started puting together everything I tore apart and installed the head unit. I can say was a lond day, but was finished in 7 hours with a miss hap included. multi meter was very handy figureing out power wires to old amps. havn't tried the hands free as of yet, but one day this week will do so.

I bought this radio because of the external mic for the bluetooth, the expansion features, and because its a Clarion, it arrived quickly I installed it and then went on vacation driving 10 hours each way that is when I realized how bad this thing really is:
      1. The user interface and menus are the most counter intuitive I've ever seen
      2. Pre-set buttons are very small and a pain to push
      3. The controls don't have much travel or feedback but you have to push them very hard to get the radio to do anything
      4. Bluetooth sound quality is good but sometimes it won't connect to the phone unless you power the radio down and turn it on again (I tired 2 phones that work great in my other car with a Sony radio)

While on vacation I had crutchfield send me a Return authorization, do yourself a favor and avoid this thing.

Installation easy due to the kit Crutchfield provides. Looks good and sounds great on tuner, CD and off USB thumbdrive but bluetooth linking not very simple. Have to manually relink every time the car is started up...for example; even when stopping for gas. My CZ501 (next version up) I have in my other vehicle automatically links which is much nicer.

I thought I had gotten a really good deal on a receiver when I bought this one. After getting installed, with some help from the Crutchfield team to rewire the factory amp, it seemed to be a good receiver. Good sound, especially compared to the factory unit.

However, after living with it for a short while, it went from good deal to annoying. The bluetooth would not automatically pair for the first week or so, then mysteriously started working. Now, when you get in the car, no matter what you were listening to, it defaults to bluetooth and you have to reselect your previous source.

In addition, the microphone is useless and there are no gain adjustments to try to make it work. The person on the other end of the call can not hear anything that is said through the mic, even held up to your mouth.

This one is definitely going back, as soon as I can decide on a replacement.

Love the radio for the price ($140 plus free 2 day shipping and no tax). But the clock issue is more annoying than I imagined when reading other reviews prior to purchase. Why the clock doesn't show at all times is beyond stupid especially with a 2 line display. The other issue is I didn't even begin to think that the song info wouldn't show on the radio display when streaming by bluetooth. It does when hooking up an IPOD through USB. I have to look at my phone when a song comes on I don't recognize which defeats the whole purpose. Other than those 2 issues, very happy with radio so far.

Bought this Stereo to keep my daughters hands on the wheel and it worked right out of the box. Bluetooth and Ipod connections keep her from fumbling around with her phone or music while driving.

NOTE: The "Power Antenna" refers to an "amplified antenna". make sure to make the connection if you want good FM reception.

This is the first modern deck I have purchased that was packed with features, but simple to use. Most have some rediculous control scheme involving joysticks and push in to pop out a control and other nonsense. This deck installed easily with included harnesses from Crutchfield and worked flawlessly. It's like getting a factory stereo with all the features you could ever want built-in. If I have any complaint, it would be that the design seems to be sculpted away from the driver position meaning it seems to slant (just slightly) from left to right. This is not a big deal but in my convertable is causes a slight glare to occur with the top down and I have to 'lean' toward the passenger side to see the display in that situation.

Nice unit for the price. Very happy with it. Like I read in other reviews, the blue tooth isn't all that great. Yes it works, but other ppl have a hard time hearing me. I did try mounting the microphone in several different places, it did not help. Other than that, great unit, I am still very happy with it.

This is a great head unit at a great price. I installed this in my 2003 Kia Sorento and it operates flawlessly. The bluetooth works great and sync'd easily with my iPhone 3Gs and my fiance's iPhone 4. The mic cord wasn't long enough to route up to the visor so I stuck it to the steering column right behind the steering wheel. Voices from this mic position come through well on the other end, the mic is more than sensitive enough. There's a little echo on the other end but no more than most factory bluetooth systems. The AD2P function for playing music through bluetooth is awesome and works great with music files as well as Pandora and other music streaming services on iPhones.

connecting ipods and iphone to the system via the units USB cable is easy and works good. It didn't recognize my iphone 3Gs the fist time I hooked it up but the second time I plugged it in it worked fine.

The unit has been working really well so far.
