Alpine

My system has plenty of power. Who needs an amp?

You might think you don't need an amp because you have a 400-watt system in your car, or because your new stereo puts out 50 watts a channel. But those are peak wattage ratings, which may boil down to 15 or 20 watts per channel, using the more realistic RMS rating. An amp sends your speakers the power they need to deliver your music with clarity and impact, whether you're using factory speakers or high-performance components. And low-frequency reproduction requires lots of power, so an amp is an absolute must if you're adding a sub to your system.

Our take on the Alpine PDX-5

Cool and Compact Amps

You get big power from a small package with Alpine's PDX Series amplifiers. Super-efficient Class-D technology allows these pint-sized powerhouses to run cool, so they can be stacked together in a multi-amp setup, freeing up valuable space in your car.

stackable up to 3 high

Heavy-duty, clean power

The PDX-5 5-channel amplifier supplies a full 75 watts RMS to four channels and 300 watts RMS to a subwoofer channel. You can drive your front and rear speakers, along with a subwoofer, with this compact amp — it's about the size of a small town phone book. Alpine uses smart design and high-quality internal components to keep the power going strong, even when you're pushing your system hard.

High-quality connections

Use the adjustable frequency filters to tune your system for peak efficiency; the front-mounted controls make it easy to tweak your sound after the amp's installed. Alpine uses corrosion-resistant gold plating on the RCA inputs and power connections to promote superior signal transfer. Special quick-connect speaker wire plugs slide in for a tight connection, guaranteeing that your speakers are in phase.

    Features

PDX Amplifier Design: Class-D amplifiers boast higher efficiency, produce much less heat, and draw less current than traditional Class AB amps. The PDX series is Alpine's super-efficient power density design of full range class-D amps. They combine MOSFET power supplies, MOSFET final outputs, and a thermal management processor, along with a 4-Layer Glass Epoxy PC Board to create a high-end sound quality without the bulky heat sinks required by most amps with this much power.

STAR Topology: Alpine's unique STAR (Signal Transit for Accurate Response) Circuit PCB design provides a single common ground for all amp sub-blocks, preventing ground interference and minimizing internal noise.

Terminal Layout: For wiring convenience all the inputs and outputs on the amp are on the rear of the amplifier.

Verification Certificate: The amplifier comes with a certificate that lists the RMS power output of the individual amplifier. It also lists the model number, serial number, test date, and the test conditions (14.4 volts, 4 ohms).

5-Channel Configuration: The PDX-5 is a 5-channel amplifier, designed to power four full-range speakers and a subwoofer. The amp provides 75 watts per channel at 4 ohms to the four full-range channels, and 300 watts at 4 ohms or 2 ohms to the subwoofer channel.

Crossovers: The front and rear channels have independent crossovers that can be set for high-pass, low-pass, or Off (for full-range operations). The crossovers are continuously variable from 30-400Hz with a slope of 12 dB per octave. The mono subwoofer channel has a 50-200 Hz low-pass filter with a 24dB per octave slope. The mono channel also has a fixed 15 Hz, 24dB per octave subsonic filter to eliminate power-robbing super low frequencies that can also damage speakers.

Speaker Connectors: The PDX series amps use a new Speaker Quick Connect plug to attach the speaker wires to the amp. Bare speaker wire, up to 8 gauge, is held in place by a set screw, the Quick Connect plug then plugs into the amp. Like an RCA jack, the Quick Connect plug uses a center positive layout, so it fits two ways and both maintain correct polarity.

Stack Amps: Because the PDX series design generates so little heat, up to three amps can be stacked and bolted together. All the amps in the series; PDX-5, PDX-2.150, PDX-4.100, PDX-4.150, PDX-1.600, and PDX-1.1000 share the same footprint, so they can be stacked together.

Notes: Do not install this amplifier vertically or at an incline. Any installation other than parallel to the vehicle floor, invalidates the warranty.

LED: The top mounted LED Power/Status indicator glows blue when operating normally and red when one of the protection circuits engages.

Protection Circuits: This amplifier includes protection circuits to prevent damage due to the following conditions: ambient temperature too high, supply current too high, short to ground, or over voltage.

    Controls

Controls (front of unit): Once set, the controls are covered by a door to prevent accidental adjustments:

    • Crossover Mode switch: set to HP (high pass), OFF (full range) or LP (low-pass), separate controls for the front and rear channels
    • Crossover Frequency (channels 1-2 and 3-4): rotary controls used to select the crossover frequency, separate controls for the front and rear channels, variable from 30 to 400Hz
    • Crossover Frequency (channel 5): rotary control used to select the crossover frequency for the mono channel, variable from 50 to 200Hz
    • Gain Controls: rotary controls used to set the amplifier's gain according the level of the incoming signal, separate controls for the front, rear, and mono channels, continuously variable from Min (0.2V) to Max (4.0V), with marks at Nominal and 0.5V.

    Connections

Inputs and Outputs (rear of unit):

    • Power and Ground terminals: power and ground terminals are gold plated set screw terminals, will accept up to 4 gauge bare wire
    • Remote Turn-on terminal: gold plated set screw terminal, will accept up to 10 gauge bare wire
    • Speaker terminals: each of the 5 speaker outputs uses Alpine's Speaker Quick Connect plug
    • Line Level Input: 6 female RCA jacks, left and right for the front, rear, and subwoofer channels, gold plated

    PDX-5

Written By Mike, Knoxville TN on Wednesday, March 07, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love the fact that this product is small enough to fit under my passenger seat and yet strong enough to power my component set, coaxials, and a sub. when Im ready for it . The only reason I didnt rate it a five was the fact that it is actual stronger than what its rated for (not a bad thing) which might be a problem for my coaxials but not if I set my settings correctly I guess but great product none the less.

    PDX-5 Fantastic. Smart

Written By Mini-van, Mega-fun, Silver Spring, MD on Sunday, February 12, 2012

I have the PDX in an older minivan (03) with factory speakers (front separates, rears regular) and a fairly new JL Audio Powerwedge (10" sealed; 300W RMS rated). I have a nice Kenwood head unit (DDX-516) with 6 channel outputs going to the amp. 4ga power and ground.

The amp sounds so good and full driving the sub and speakers that I can wait to replace the factory speakers. It is a small amp, easily accepted 4ga wiring; speaker plugs are super easy. The true test will be when I get speakers rated near 70W RMS. I will update then.

    Great Amp!
    Pros:
Small. Powerful. Good looking. Smart connections.
    Cons:
    None.

    Perfect for C4 Corvette

Written By duhdotcom, California on Monday, February 06, 2012

I needed an amp with a small footprint but ample power. This amp, combined with Pioneer 6x9 in the back, Pioneer 5-1/4 in the doors, BA 3x5 in the dash (wired in w/door speakers) and a Kicker square 10" in the box behind the driver seat (fits perfect)made this 1984 Corvette one of the best listening rooms I've experienced....and I haven't even bothered to dial it in yet. The head unit is a low end Kenwood...it's good but I'm sure with a better unit (Kenwood or otherwise) it would really rock...I have the amp kind of just thrown in the box behind the passenger seat, and no heat issues ever...my 2 cents...
    Pros:
Small size, stays cool in a small space, 5 channels
    Cons:
    none really

Got this amp running two sets of Polk DB 6.5 components and a JL Audio 12" sub. It has plenty of power and sounds great. The speaker wire connections on this amp make for an easy and clean installation. I definitely recommend this amp.

    Quality in a small package

Written By Kevin, Long Island, NY on Tuesday, August 16, 2011

I just had this amp installed into my 07 Jeep grand cherokee, and it performs great. I have a Kenwood X995 head unit, and the amp is powering Alpine type R 6.5 components in the front, type S coaxial speakers in the rear doors and a type R 10" sub in a custom sealed box. I mainly listen to hard rock and the amp provides enough power to the sub to deliver tight and crisp low notes and provides the clarity to components so that even the most technical guitar solos can beheard note for note. If your looking for a compact amp to deliver plenty of power to a quality system, this is a great option.

    Worst Amp ever

Written By Rich, gardner, Ma on Friday, July 29, 2011

This is by far the worst Amp I ever purchased (Done 7 stereo installations over the years) and this was the most disappointing Amp I ever used. It was install in a 68 GTO that is not driven very often, after coming out of storage the Amp died and of course the warrant was over. The Amp had a total of three hours use. The biggest waste of money and it says nothing to me about Alpines products. O do not recommend alpine to anyone!!

Class D is best left for subs only

Written By Ron, Orlando, FL on Friday, November 19, 2010

Don't believe the hype about new class D amps having been refined to the point where they can now reproduce mid and high frequencies as accurately and musically as traditional class A/B amps. They can't. Alas, I bought this amp after reading contradictory reviews and opinions for a few months, and although the overall quality and power seem to live up to Alpine's claims, the sound quality DEFINATELY leaves something to be desired. Mids and highs are lifeless and tinny - to the point where I thought my new JL Audiocomponents were to blame and replaced them instead of the real culprit - this PDX amp. My last 5 channel before this was an old 405S, and I wish I had that baby now. I plan to switch to the new Reference series amps soon. I just can't live with the sharp, peaky tint this thing brings to everything even slightly transient (vocals, strings, etc.). Can you?

    Alpine PDX-5

This is a GREAT amp !!! Very small, but powerful. Very under rated, my birth sheet reads 110wX4 and 418wX1. Has no problem pushing my single JL Audio 10W3. Also have it connected to two sets of Alpine 600c componets, amp is more than enough. If space is issue in your install this will be a great choice.

This Amp Is The REAL DEAL

Written By houtx5, Houston, TX on Wednesday, July 07, 2010

Installed in Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab with Alpine head unit, type S 6x9 in front, type S 5.25 in rear with dual Alpine type E subs in an upfire enclosure. No doubt the best amp you can buy for the price. Speakers are clear and powerful....subs hit hard! Purchased head unit from Crutchfield and had trim kit that fit perfect, instructions that were great. Couldn't be happier ! Alpine and Crutchfield....great combination !

It all goes back to an old saying, you get what you pay for. If you are fooled by the size, shame on you. Simpy put the pdx series Alpine amps out perform the rest. I feel confident in saying it stands at the top among a crowded field of amplifiers on the market.

    Believe the hype

Written By ryan, San Diego, CA on Sunday, March 14, 2010

Inexpensive alternative to superior amps. Replaced my two old amps for PDX5, sounds like a new system. I thought it was good before I ran my imprint, and now it sound wonderful. The one draw back, though minor, is loss of warmth of a analog amp. If your on the fence about this product, than believe the hype. You wont regret it. RH

    Lovin' this little Alpine!

Written By Rhys, Lakeland, FL on Friday, March 12, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had a Profile 4 channel amp in my 4 door Tacoma; recently added a preloaded JL 10" (W1v210) behind the passenger seat. I needed more juice to fill out and add some depth to the music. A friend has a PDX in his car, and could not say enough about the quality. The PDX went in easily under the driver's seat, and really pushed the JL and the 4 Kenwoods in the doors. The birth certificate shows 110 RMS for the front 4, and 431 for the sub channel. No thump turning on, and a clean look. This little beast produces almost no heat, even pushing hard. Best amp I've ever bought

    Powerful, versatile, clean

Written By craig, Richmond, VA on Monday, March 08, 2010

I decided to upgrade the sound in my 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad-cab PU truck. I purchased an Alpine HU, an 1DA-X305, and had it installed. I next got an Alpine 12'' subwoofer, the SWS-1243D, and the amp in question, the PDX-5. These five channels put out clean, unencumbered power, and the music now comes alive in my truck -- admittedly, an environment with a long way to go before I would call it good for listening. Still, the four 75 watt channels send clear signals to my stock speakers, and the 300 watts to my 1243D can rattle my bones. Now I feel I can compete with any kid at the traffic light who's pumping-out his Jay-Z! Seriously, it's not about the volume for me, but the clarity of the sound; its accuracy in relation to the recorded music; the separation of the instruments; and, to the extent possible in a six+ year-old truck, the soundstage the amp produces. These are excellent. Next up, some new speakers. My mobile listening space will be complete soon, but right now, this amp is worth every dime. The value-added here is the extra-competent staff and the rapid shipping. Great job everyone, and thank you.

    Wow!

Written By Kevin, NC on Wednesday, January 20, 2010

This is the first amp I have ever bought and installed and I am very impressed. The size is great and allowed me to install it on the back wall of my extended cab 02' F-150 while keeping the seat functional. It powers four Kenwood KFC-C6882ie's in my doors and an MTX thunderform with two MTX Thunder 6000A 8" subwoofers. The speakers in the doors never really sounded great to me until the amplifier and the thunderform really thumps. It is surprising how much bass the thunderform puts out with this amp and there is plenty left if I ever want to upgrade to different or larger subs. I grounded it well to a sheet metal tab on my back wall with a bolt and knurled, shouldered washer and I have no noise at all. I have heard some people with amps in their vehicles and you can hear hissing or "noise" between songs or when it turns on and I have none of that with this amp. I was weary of that before installing as I thought some noise was normal with an after-market amp, but not this one with a good ground.

    Pros:
    - Speaker plugs make speaker wire connections easy and neat
    - space saving design
    - plenty of power
    - no noise of any kind
    - clean, full sound and can be used with 2, 3, and 4 way coaxial speakers or set up for component systems with adjustments

    Cons:
    - depending on your wallet and budget, price could be an issue

    Killer AMP!!!!!!

Written By Matt, Ohio on Tuesday, December 15, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Let me start by saying this amp is just flat awesome! Anyone that is looking for one amp to run their entire system needs to look no farther. I have Infinity Kappa 6.5" components, 5.25" coaxs and a JL stealth box in my 03 Dodge truck, They were powered by an Infinity 5 channel that just never seemed to get the job done, this Alpine amp brought my set up to life. The mids and highs are so clear now, the bass is tight and punchy. Some have said the sub channel output is week, I found if you just take some time to properly set the amp up the power it produces is awesome. By the way the birth sheet showed much better than the 75x4 and 300x1 rating, it came in at 114x4 and 422x1.

    Little Wonder

Written By jonathan, New York, NY on Sunday, July 19, 2009

This little amp is great. The review written by Glenn, Houston, TX describes this amp perfectly. My birth-sheet stated 114w x 4 and 414W for the sub, much higher then alpines min specs.

    pros
    -very very small
-all wiring connectons on one side, neat speaker terminals
-all controls on the other side, behind a neat panel -very crisp and clean sound (for those worried about the S/N ratio, dont, very clean sounding amp, )
    - highs are precise and clear,

    cons
-must be mounted horizontally, due to heat sink design -no bass boost

All and all this amp is great, i have it powering two sets of alpine type x (ref) components and a jl audio 10" w3 stealth box. as stated before you do have to do a little work to bring out the power of the sub channel because the mains are so strong, but once you do you get musically accurate sharp punchy bass.

I replaced a premium 4 channel amp with about the same power as the Alpine PDX-5 and better frequency response and S/N ratio stats, but the Alpine impresses with a better sound regardless. Its worth every penny!

    Great Amp

Written By Glenn, Houston, TX on Wednesday, June 03, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a very good amp and an excellent choice for a single amp. I am very happy with it. FYI - My test sheet showed 106/421 watts.

On mid/highs, it is the best sounding, most detailed, reasonably priced amp I have ever owned and I have owned many, including the Alpine MRP series. I was a little worried because of the reviews mentioning subwoofer output level issues. My thoughts - the subwoofer output level is on par with any good 300-400 watt RMS mono amp with a flat bass response. By comparison, the Rockford Punch 300.1 (which I replaced with the PDX-5) plays noticably louder if the Punch EQ is cranked up. I didn't notice too much difference though, because I always went easy on the Punch EQ anyway. The difference is EQ, not output level. However, the Alpine bass is very "tight", in comparison to the Rockford bass which sounded a little "slow" or "mushy" to me after I heard the PDX-5.

The other thing is that 400 watts on bass in proportion with the 100 watts to each of the main speakers can cause the bass to seem to be a little weak because the main speakers can play so loud. My last system had only about 25 watts to the mains with over 300watts to the sub and sounded fine and well balanced. You may have to adjust the level of the mains lower to balance everything out.

    Blown Away

Written By Mr. Pennington, Nashville, TN on Saturday, May 30, 2009

Alright, check this out. I had a off brand amp that was rated at 1200 Watts connected to a 12in Audiobahn. Output was ok but muddy and powerless to say the least. I was attracted to the PDX 5 because it would power my front and rear speakers as well. I had it installed and since the sub channel is rated at 300 RMS I was expecting a loss. Let me tell you, it was rediculous! Two days later and I'm still in shock because of what this amp can do for your system! The 300 RMS watts of the subwoofer is ten times cleaner and more powerful than the offbrand 1200 Watts I had going for me! If I could give this product more stars I WOULD!

    Great Amplifier!

Written By David, Maryland on Wednesday, May 20, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This amplifier is great if your looking for moderate power and not looking to take up lots of space. Using it to power my two sets of SPX-17REF and an SWR-1242D. Sound is loud enough for crusing at highway speeds with all windows down and crisp and clear. I would recommed using with Imprint if you have an Alpine HU for fine tuning though. Also the 4V preout instead of 2V on W505 helps. Looks like most verification certificates are around 120-125 WPC for full range and 400-425 watts for sub channel. Did i mention that all of this comes in a package about the size of an 8x10 photo! Speaker adapters make for a cleaner looking install but don't crank down on the set screws too much. For the price and performance I think the PDX series are hard to beat!
