Floor-standing speakers — still standing tall

Sure, floor-standing tower speakers buck the industry trend toward smaller, visually inconspicuous speakers, but they're hard to beat if great sound is your primary goal. Tower speakers produce powerful sound with excellent bass, making them a great choice for serious music lovers and for folks who want high-impact home theater.

Our take on the PSB Image T6

by Kristen Schaub

Excellent performance...and an exceptional value

Experience the kind of clean, balanced sound that has earned PSB speakers a sterling reputation among high-end audio circles. The Image T6 borrows from driver technologies developed for PSB's sophisticated Imagine family and their top-tier Synchrony speakers, giving you high-end sound at a budget-friendly price. The Image line also features a slightly different cabinet design than its predecessors, showcasing clean lines that won't clutter up your listening room.

Image family

PSB's Image speaker family (Image T6 shown center left)

High-tech drivers produce clean, well-balanced sound

K2 Power crossover network

The tweeter uses a powerful neodymium magnet for crystal-clear highs.

The Image T6 features a 1" titanium dome tweeter that effortlessly dishes out smooth, uncolored highs. The tweeter sits just below the midrange in a unique arrangement that's characteristic of PSB's high-end Synchrony speakers. The long-excursion, high-output 5-1/4" midrange driver and dual 6-1/2" woofers use the same proprietary ceramic-filled polypropylene cones as the Imagine line. The stiff, lightweight cone material helps them deliver midrange that's clean and balanced, with excellent imaging. Each of the woofers is contained in its own ported internal enclosure, which allows for extended, defined bass response uncommon for a speaker of this size.

Sleek, thoughtful cabinet design

All Image speakers have heavy internal bracing and 1-1/8" thick MDF cabinets to ensure impressively solid, acoustically inert enclosures. These cabinets have a traditional look, but with slightly curved tops and fronts to soften it. This family of speakers also features attractive vinyl finishes, allowing the Image speakers to easily integrate into just about any décor.

From the review Rocking the house with the PSB Image T6 speakers

"Ultimately, I think, the test of a great speaker rests on your enjoyment of the music. I had the pleasure of testing the T6s by listening to music and artists I've thoroughly enjoyed for years. Can a speaker make a difference? Can an old tune take on new life? The answer to both is a resounding 'yes.'"

Driver Technology

Cone Design: The midrange and woofer cones are clay/ceramic filled polypropylene to optimize the combination of stiffness, internal damping, and low mass. The magnetically neutral polycarbonate baskets contribute additional stiffness, and the bullet-shaped phase-plugs enhance linearity at higher frequencies.

Tweeter: The 1" titanium dome, Ferrofluid cooled tweeters use a neodymium magnet structure to help extend the frequency response at both ends for effortless, airy top octaves and smooth, uncolored response.

Crossover Network: The crossover is a 3-way acoustical fourth order Linkwitz-Riley type with a 24 dB/octave slope. The crossover points are 500 Hz and 2,200 Hz.

Connections

Binding Posts: The dual binding post input terminals are located on the lower rear of the speaker cabinet. The two sets of binding posts are shorted together by a gold-plated jumper. With the jumper removed the Imagine T6 can be bi-wired or bi-amplified. The binding posts will accept spade connectors, single banana plugs, pin connectors, and bare wire up to 8 gauge.

Mounting Options

Leveling Feet: The Imagine T6 includes two sets of leveling feet; the rubber covered feet are used on a hard surface and add approximately 1/2" to the height of the speaker, the carpet spikes add approximately 1" to the height.

Crisp and Clear

Written By AG, Little Rock, AR on Thursday, May 23, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Did my review homework and chose the PSB Image T6. I agree with others that for the price these are a perfect speaker for the mid-level audiophile.
Pros:
Crisp and clear sound. Highs are extraordinary.
Cons:
I would have paid extra for real wood veneer but the vinyl still looks nice.

Sound Great with a Sub

Written By JK, South Mississippi on Monday, February 04, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been listening to them for about a week now. Upon hearing them for the first time I thought "crisp" and "clear". For the most part these speakers delivered on my expectations, which were high considering I placed them in a 17' x 32' room with a connecting hallway. They're driven by a Yamaha RX-A2020 in a room that's acoustically challenged with an open floor plan, wood flooring and a vaulted ceiling. At the moment they're setup in a 2.1 configuration. I listen to mostly Rock-and-Roll with some occasional country. The mids and highs sound phenomenal. The lows hang on for most music at low to moderate listening levels but when pushed or when tracks contain heavy bass, the speakers can sound loose, boomy...etc. I'm running an SVS PB12-PLUS sub and it took a few days to tweak the lower frequencies between the T6s and the sub but once it was dialed in, the setup really came to life. I would not use the T6s without a sub.

Noting reviews that complained about something missing in the mid frequencies with rock music, I felt the same way at first but then realized speakers are typically not plug-and-play and these are no exception. I had to spend some time with the equalizer and sub to get the sound that I wanted. So far it's really just one song out of a 100 CDs that does not sound quite right.
Pros:
Crisp and Clear, small footprint
Cons:
Need to be used with a Subwoofer

Excellent Speakers

Written By Matthew B, Rockford, IL on Tuesday, January 08, 2013

These are excellent speakers that are well worth the money I paid for them. As an aging baby boomer I play a lot of Jazz, Blues, Acoustic and Classic Rock material and it all sounds great coming from the Image T6's. They hit 40hz with tightness and authority and the mids and highs are perfectly clear without sounding the least bit bright. The bottom end is so good I deleted my subwoofer from two channel listening because I just don't need it. Although they do highlight poorly engineered recordings they are not the least bit sibilant in themselves. If anything, they tone down the sibilance in my worst tracks. The adjectives I would use are full range, full bodied, and clear as can be while still projecting a slight warmness of tone to the vocals; close to perfect actually. I'm driving them with my Yamaha RX-V663 AV receiver which puts out a nominal 95 Watts into an 8 Ohm load. This unit has a 6 Ohm capability, so I switched to that, but I don't know the rated output into 6 Ohms. I tried the bi-amp capability of the '663 but I didn't like it because it seemed to boost the already strong low end at the expense of the mids and highs, so I switched back. This receiver also has a pre-out capability so I might try adding a separate power amp on a trial basis to see if that improves things even more. My sources are vinyl, of course, internet radio, and FLAC files I've ripped from CD onto a media server. It all sounds great.
Pros:
-As above -Great design, only ported in front which increases placement options -Very high WAF for appearance and sound. 10 of 10 actually - WOW!! -Standard excellent service from Crutchfield.
Cons:
-In all seriousnes I really don't see any cons here. Altough, the outstanding WAF might preclude future upgrades

Great T-6 Speakers

Written By Regina, Tucson, AZ on Monday, September 24, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased a NAD 725 Receiver and a pair of PSB T-6 speakers to replace an OLD Kenwood receiver and Bose 301 speakers. I listen to old Motown music, R & B and some KennyG. The sound on these speakers is amazing. Deep base that you can hear at 1/4 volume, clear mid-ranges and high notes. I'm extremely happy with my new stereo sound system. The speakers sound even better after they've been used a couple of weeks. I didn't realize it made a difference and am glad I listed to Larry @ Crutchfield to not critique the sound the first few times I played music. The sounds definitely warm up after a few weeks.
Pros:
You can feel the music with these speakers....not loud but just feel like the artists are in the room with you.

Very Happy

Written By GWS, Minneapolis on Monday, May 28, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A truly great speaker for the price. It turned out to be better than I had expected, and I am very happy. Make sure you have a quality Amp/Receiver to power these things. I have a Yamaha RX-A810, which has 8olm at 100W RSM/140 Dynamic, and I think at the 6olm these things run at its 110W RSM/180W Dynamic. Even with my very good receiver - $850 list price - I feel that I would not want to use any less power.

The build quality on these turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The panels are fitted very well and the construction of the unit is something to be proud of. I was worried that my wife would think these towers were ghastly to look at, but even though they are large she likes the way they look.

The sound quality is much better than I had expected. It should be stated that I am a professional classical musician, actually meaning that it is my career and not just that I think I am amazing, and I am very pleased with the way these speakers sound. They provide a substantial room filling sound with great clarity throughout the registers, especially the tweeter. In fact, the tweeter and high range is so clear that I think it slightly out performs the bass range, so that might be my one drawback even though this is common among high-end speakers.

Overall I am very happy with these speakers, and I would strongly recommend them to others, and not just because I own them so them must be amazing, which unfortunately is how a lot of people review things.
Pros:
Price Sound Build Quality Narrow Stance

Good speakers but flawed

Written By Tim, Denver CO on Thursday, April 26, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So these speakers can be downright amazing at times at first I could find no flaw. But with time I had some issues. Classical,Jazz, other forms of instrumental music like Tangerine Dream,Kitaro,Vangelis etc..some Rock,Blues,,acoustic guitar all sound great. But some Rock music I just find something not quite right with treble and mids. I tried a lot of different positions in placement. And while I was able to get it almost there it still just not quite right. I guess we could blame the recording but I can listen to the same recording on other speakers and not have that problem. So this speaker although great for most of my music collection and always growing wasn't able to be a perfect 1 stop solution. So I looked into getting some bookselfs to switch between that and these towers for different music. Now I just think a different pair of towers but probably be a perfect 1 speaker pair solution. I really like these PSB speakers but there not perfect. Perhaps any potential buyer should try to see if they can listen first with their own music and see if they are right for them. Although these PSB speakers are amazing and almost perfect for a lot of music it's not ideal.
Pros:
Great with most music but not perfect, powerful bass, great vocals, nice build quality
Cons:
Something not quite right with treble and mids on some music

Amazing Speakers

Written By another music fan, Nevada on Tuesday, February 07, 2012

I have a had some decent equipment before so the first thing to impress was not the resolution, detail or how involving music can become with quality sound equipment. It was the vocals I've never heard vocals sound this good before. The highs also impressed me in how powerful they are and extended but never bright or harsh. The vitality these speakers also bring to music really impressed me and with the right music the dynamics are powerful and have a very emotional effect. The bass is powerful with a great texture and never bleeds or bloats into the mids or highs. If your only purpose is home theater unless you really have the money these are overkill I would go with the Infinity Primus p362/3. If your music collection only consists of modern day pop/rock although it's a album to album basis you'll likely not be impressed for the money since a lot of that music can be extremely compressed. So perhaps a cheaper speaker set. The great thing about these is you can expand your music horizon classical sounds so good on these that I've been buying and listening to a lot of that in the several months since I've owned these as well as other music and genres. My music is primarily 70's rock, hard rock, blues. For stereo use you will want to make sure you have a good amp such as Marantz PM 5004 integrated amp you will want to skip and avoid Sony,Onkyo,Denon, and Yamaha I was pretty shocked at how much difference a quality amp makes.

Pros:
Vocals, highs, bass, vitality to music overall how great music can sound Crutchfield doesn't sell some other known great speakers but PSB is the best sounding I've ever heard if your looking for or considering speakers try out PSB
Cons:
Unless you already have one a quality amp really matters so that could be another $450 or so you will need to spend to make sure you get the most of the PSBs I've tried some cheaper amps and the speakers were very disappointing sounding if I didn't have a better amp I would've probably blamed the speakers so you need a quality amp. I use a Marantz PM 5004 integrated amp skip and avoid cheaper things like Onkyo,Sony,Denon and Yamaha.

Outstanding Speakers at this price!!

Written By Boog, St. Louis, MO on Monday, April 18, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was in the market for new speakers so I called my audiophile friend and he immediately suggested the PSB T6's - especially if I didn't want to blow my budget, which you can easily do on high-end speakers. I bought the T6's without even listening to them beforehand (which is crazy) and all I have to say is WOW. After a few weeks of breaking them in they sound absolutely fantastic. I have them bi-amped and they are producing great crisp highs and a robust, full sound from the mids and woofers. This is really an outstanding speaker for the price. I got the PSB T5 center speaker to compliment them and it sounds so nice. Highly recommend the T6 to someone looking for a audiophile quality speaker at a fraction of the price. Watch out, they are easy to knock over due to their height and narrow width - something to think about if you have kids running around the house.

PSB Image T6

Written By George S, New York, N Y on Monday, February 21, 2011

This is my first major upgrade to a pro-audio level of speakers, just used for two channel listening. I am very pleased with the entire spectrum and full range of these speakers, couldn't be happier with the sound reproduction. It should be noted that the cabinet finish in cherry is not a wood veneer - while this is disclosed, speakers in this price range should have a wood veneer. Other than that, it is a fine system

Spectacular

Written By Ryan, Wilmington, De on Wednesday, September 29, 2010

I first want to start off by saying this is my third set of home theater towers in my personal collection., I previously owned the Klipsch RF 15, Polk RTIA9, and now these, all of these were hooked up to an amp going through a Pioneer SC07. While one could argue the Polk RTA9's are much more of a speaker in many aspects then these, i would argue that these speakers are hands down better. They are extremly warm, nice amount of bass, amazingly loud, and can hanle anything you through at them. For the price i dont think you will find a better speaker. On the side i install home theaters....and these speakers would be my number one choice for any novice AV person. Buy them...and i guaruantee you will be pleasantly suprised.....there are many good reviews of these speakers from professionals out there....They are all true!
