Our take on the Nikon AF-S DX VR 18-200mm Lens

by Dave Bar

This Nikon AF-S series lens offers a broad focal range that gives you versatile wide-angle and telephoto shooting options with Nikon's "DX" format digital SLR cameras. Optical quality is superb, as you'd expect from Nikon. Plus, its Vibration Reduction technology lets you take sharp, in-focus photographs in all sorts of lighting conditions. Here's how it works.

We've all taken a picture and had it turn out blurry because our hands moved a little while we were capturing the shot. Vibration Reduction works around this problem. Built-in motion sensors steer a special set of optical elements inside the lens, neatly compensating for camera movement and stabilizing the image. You get much sharper pictures — even in low-light conditions where hand motion can easily cause blurred images with a regular lens. VR lenses are much loved by photographers who don't like to carry along a tripod on every excursion, but who require crisp photos as a matter of course.

High-tech Vibration Reduction isn't the only advantage provided by this lens. A built-in Silent Wave Motor makes autofocus very fast and nearly silent. There's also its wide-angle picture-taking capability — great for capturing panoramic landscapes, or snapping large group shots of folks in tight quarters. And it even excels at taking precise close-ups of objects as near as 19.2 inches.

    Specifications

    Features

Product Overview: This item is a 18-200mm, f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED (Extra-low Dispersion glass), AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor lens, compatible with the Nikon DX formatted Digital SLR cameras (like the D-50). The lens includes a 72mm snap-on front lens cap (LC-72), a rear lens cap (LF-1), and a bayonet hood (HB-35). Auto Focus-Silent Wave (AF-S) is a type of focusing motor used in a number of AF-Nikkor lenses; the AF-S motor is very fast and quiet. AF-S lenses also have an M/A mode selector which allows the user to switch from automatic to manual focus with almost no lag time.

Focus Range: The lens has a broad 18-200mm focal range for use in a variety of situations (equivalent to a 27-300 lens in 35mm format).

Vibration Reduction: The VR II system offers a reduction of vibration while the shutter is button is slightly pressed and at the instant the shutter is released. This is the equivalent of using a shutter speed 4 stops faster.

Silent Wave Motor (SWM): New compact rod-type motor enables ultra-high speed autofocusing with exceptional accuracy and super-quiet operation.

AF G-type lens: Lenses that use D-Type technology provide the camera with precise distance information for flash and ambient light exposure processes.

ED Glass Elements: There are two of these elements which minimize color imperfections and achieve superior optical performance.

Coating: Lenses are coated with Nikon Super Integrated Coating which minimizes ghosting affects and flare, so that you can get even higher contrast and vivid images, even in challenging light operation.

Zoom Control: The lens features a large, textured manual zoom ring for ultimate zooming control.

Auto Focus with Manual Override (M/A): In the autofocus mode you can instantly switch to manual focus using the focus ring, for easy adjustment. Note: Because there is no aperture ring on this lens, the aperture must be set on the camera.

Diaphragm: The lens is equipped with a fully-automatic, 7-bladed diaphragm that produces a nearly circular aperture. Out-of-focus images in front of or behind the subject are rendered as pleasing blurs.

Bayonet Hood: The supplied HB-35 bayonet hood extends approximately 1-3/4" beyond the front of the lens, and shades the aperture opening from direct sunlight that causes flaring. When not in use, the hood can be stored on the lens by mounting it in reverse position.

Optional Accessories (available from Nikon): Compatible optional accessories include 72mm screw-in filters.

    Nikkor 18-200mm VR lens

Written By John, Coxs Creek, KY on Thursday, June 11, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted the ultimate walk-around lens to go with my new Nikon D90. I spent many evenings reading reviews and determining exactly what I wanted my camera to do. The 18-200mm lens covers 95% of my picture taking. If you want micro capabilities or nature pictures from more than 50 feet...this isn't the lens and they don't make one. You have to chance lens for those specialized shots, but for the vast majority of the time this lens fits the bill. Little pricey, and a little heavy; but worth it in the long run.

    Worth every penny

Written By Scott, Indiana on Friday, August 08, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Paired with my D300, this combination is the perfect outfit for a trip to the
zoo or an impromptu portrait session. The focusing speed is quick and
generally accurate, and the wide zoom range means there is less chance I'll
miss a shot. The VR works quite well. Shutter speeds are only hampered
by a f/5.6 aperture. If you are shooting sports, get the 70-200 f/2.8 VR!

Pros: Wide zoom range, very good VR system, quick focus speed,
impressive minimum focusing distance for a non-macro lens (less than 8"),
    and compact.

Cons: Minor lens creep if not set to 18mm, some distortion at both ends of
the focal lengths, slow maximum aperture, and a slight bit of softness.

My particular lens lacks a tiny bit of sharpness at 200mm. This is only
noticeable at almost 100% crop and I suspect it has more to do with a
focusing error than the actual glass itself. It's not something I worry about
except under the most critical of circumstances. I wouldn't think twice
about having this be the only lens with me for a casual excursion.

    Great lens for traveling

Written By Manny, San Juan, PR on Monday, June 23, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have the Nikon D40 with the stock lens (18-55mm) that works very well, but i need a lens that cover more range for traveling. You don't know when you need more zoom when traveling and i simply can't deal with changing lens. The Nikon AF-S DX VR 18-200mm Lens is all you need for take photos outdoors. It cover a lot more range with nice sharpness. I'm not a pro, i only enjoy taking photos everywhere and this lens is the only lens i need for everything. Recently i take great photos without flash in a theather. I never take photos like those in a consumer digital camera. I know it is a bit pricey, but it worth every penny. The VR technology is AWESOME when taking low light photos and/or using the 200mm full range without blur.

Los of extra space in my bag

Written By heeeerod, east Texas on Friday, December 07, 2007

I have a Nikon D80 that I have been using for about 8 months now. I love the camera. I have a SB600 speedlite...love it. I have a couple lenses that I got with the camera...an 70-300 macro zoom and a 28-70 zoom. They are both very nice third party lenses, but I crindged every time I took one off to change out..I am a dust fanatic. Nothing bothers me more that having to get rid of dust in photo shop. I shoot a lot out doors...sometimes in very nasty places and I need a lens that would cover a lot of ground. The Nikon 18-200 was a bit pricey for me...I'm not a "pro" although I do get paid sometimes and $900 was a lot of money to me...my wife too!! I have to say next to the choice of camera, it has been the best photography related descision I have made in a while. It stays on my camera almost 90% of the time...it is a lovely outdoor senior pic lens...it focuses pretty close for tele work...and it is very useful at the wide end too. Yeah...there are some things that need to be touched up a bit when you are working at the long and the wide end...but they are pretty minor. The VR is amazing! If you are shooting static stuff, you can handhold waaaaay down there slow...it is also amazing at sharpening up those handheld shots when there is just no other way. Shoot some shots outta the car window...you'll see what I mean. This thing does everything it is advertised to do. It IS the perfect (almost) walking around lens...more even. Save that room in your case for a nice flash and a sandwich..and take off!
