DVD receivers: They're not just for movies

DVD receivers add a new level of entertainment to your vehicle. You can watch a movie on the screen when you're parked on a Saturday night, or play a DVD through your rear seat video setup on the road. Touchscreen receivers allow you to breeze through menus with the tip of your finger. Most DVD receivers feature a USB input for audio from your iPod, and the ability to add an adapter that allows video to display on the screen. Some receivers even offer connections for a center speaker and a subwoofer, so you can build a full-fledged theater in your car, just like at home.

Our take on the JVC KW-AV50

by Zak Billmeier
JVC KW-AV50

Touchscreen control in your dash
The JVC KW-AV50 DVD receiver won't just transform the look of your dash — it'll give your daily commute, road trips, and grocery runs a makeover, too. It gives you a touchscreen entertainment command center that'll handle all your tunes, become best friends with your iPod® and iPhone®, and even play movies while you're parked. And unlike many other DVD receivers, you can remove its control panel for added security.

Great for your digital music
Just plug in your iPod or iPhone to the USB input, and you can use this JVC's responsive touchscreen to tap your way through all your tunes and playlists. If you're not an iPod user, you can load up a USB drive or a recordable disc with digital files — it's easy to fit hundreds of tracks on either one, and you can still dive in using the touchscreen.

Got an iPhone? Add in-dash GPS to the KW-AV50
You can use your iPhone to put the most up-to-date maps available in your dash. Just download the MotionX-GPS Drive app, connect your iPhone with JVC's KS-U30 cable, and you'll be able to see maps and live traffic on the KW-AV50's screen. You'll still need to access your iPhone, however, so it's a good idea to turn over control to a passenger, or consider adding an iPhone mount.

Unlike factory navigation systems, points of interest (POIs) are integrated with Wikipedia and Facebook, giving you more accurate search results than with preloaded navigation. Throw in live traffic and live map updates, and you'll have the most accurate navigation system on the planet. At 99 cents for the app, plus $19.99 for a year's subscription for voice guidance and live traffic, it's a fantastic value, too.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this JVC stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the JVC, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

iPod note:
If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver. You can't connect JVC's KS-BTA100 Bluetooth adapter and the KS-U30 iPod adapter at the same time, as they use the same input.

Hard-Key Controls: In addition to the head unit's touchscreen monitor, the KW-AV50 features hard-key controls along the left edge of the screen. The unit includes a 3-way rotary dial for Volume (up/down) control and push-button controls for Power/Source functions..

Display Design: You can change the color of  background, text, touchscreen buttons, and hard-key buttons. The color of the background, text, and buttons can be changed independently from one another.

      • Background: The unit's background color can be changed to one of eight preset colors - blue, light blue, red, green, yellow, orange, violet, or white. You can also create a custom color using a combination (0-31) of red, green, and blue.
      • Text: The unit's onscreen text can be changed to one of seven preset colors - blue, red, green, yellow, orange, violet, or white. You can also create a custom color using a combination (0-31) of red, green, and blue.
      • Buttons: The unit's touchscreen and hard-key button color can be changed to one of eight preset colors - blue, light blue, red, green, yellow, orange, violet, or white. You can also choose to have the unit constantly scroll through all eight preset color. In addition, you can create a custom color using a combination (0-31) of red, green, and blue.

Note: You can save separate color settings for Daytime and Nighttime driving.

Custom Background Image: While playing a video or JPEG file, you can capture an image and use the captured image as your background. When using a JPEG file as the background, make sure that the resolution is 800 x 600 pixels. The color of the captured image may look different from that of the actual scene.

Note: You cannot capture copyrighted content and images from the iPod/iPhone.

Display Adjustment: You can adjust the brightness and black level of the unit's onscreen display. You can also adjust the contrast, color, tint, and detail level during video playback. The adjustment level for each setting is -15 to +15.

      • Regular: For 4:3 source material, 4:3 and 16:9 pictures display with black bars on either side (16:9 images are compressed).
      • Full: Expands 4:3 pictures horizontally to fill the entire width of the screen, distorting the picture slightly but retaining full image height.
      • Panorama: For viewing 4:3 pictures naturally on the unit's wide-screen display.
      • Auto: The correct aspect mode is automatically chosen based on the incoming signal.

Adjustable Dimmer: When the illumination lead (orange/white) is connected and the dimmer set to Auto, the display will dim automatically when you turn on your vehicle's lights. The dimmer can also be set to Off (normal brightness at all times), On (display is always dimmed), or Dimmer Time Set (you program the time for the dimmer to turn off an on). The unit also features 3 dimmer levels to choose from - Bright, Middle, or Dark.

Parking Brake Detection: To prevent the displaying of video while the vehicle is in motion, the parking brake wire (light green) attached to the rear-chassis must be connected to your vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. While the vehicle is in motion (parking brake off), you can still view all of the other displays and menus.

Multi-Language Menu: There are ten options for the menu language; English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, Swedish, Danish, and Russian.

2-DIN Chassis: The JVC KW-AV50 has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as Double DIN), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets, or Euro-mounted using the supplied mounting sleeve. As always, please consult the Crutchfield Car Selector to verify fit with your vehicle.

      Disc Playback

Disc Compatibility: The JVC KW-AV50 supports the playback of the following disc types: DVD-Video, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD-Audio, CD-Text, CD-R/RW, and Video CD.

MP3/WMA Playback: The KW-AV50 can play MP3 (bitrate: 32-320 kbps), WMA (bitrate: 32-320 kbps), WAV (sampling freq: 44.1kHz) audio files recorded onto DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, and CD-R/RW discs. MP3/WMA/WAV files must be formatted in ISO 9660 level or level 2, Romeo, or Joliet. The head unit can recognize a total of 5,000 files and 250 folders (a maximum of 999 files per folder). This unit will recognize a total of 25 characters for file/folder names. The KW-AV50 can display ID3 Tags (ver. 1.0/1.1/2.2/2.3/2.4) for MP3 files, as well as WAV/WMA Tag information.

      MPEG/JPEG Playback:  The JVC KW-AV50 supports playback of JPEG still-image files (resolution: 32x32 - 8192x7680) and MPEG1/2 video files (maximum bit-rate: 4Mbps) recorded onto DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, and CD-R/RW discs.

DivX Certified: The KW-AV50 is DivX Certified to play DivX video files, including premium content.

Disc Resume: If you change the source, playback also stops (without ejecting the disc). Next time you select CD for the playback source, the disc will start from where it has been stopped previously.

Off Insert/Eject: A CD disc can be inserted or ejected with the power off. When a disc is inserted with the power off, the unit will automatically power up and begin playback.

Disc Protection: If the ejected disc is not removed within 15 seconds, the disc is automatically inserted again into the loading slot to protect it from dust; playback starts automatically.

Mounting: For proper disc playback you must install the unit within 30-degrees of horizontal.

      USB/iPod Connectivity

USB Port: The JVC KW-AV50 features a rear-panel USB port on a 38" pigtail. This allows playback of MP3 (bitrate: 32-320 kbps), WMA (bitrate: 32-320 kbps), WAV (sampling freq: 44.1 kHz) audio files; JPEG (resolution: 32x32 - 8192x7680) still image files; and MPEG1/2 (maximum bitrate: 4 Mbps) video files stored on a USB mass storage device. For the unit to recognize the USB medium, it must be specified as a mass storage device formatted using FAT 12/16/32. The head unit can recognize a total of 5,000 files and 250 folders (a maximum of 999 files per folder). This unit will recognize a total of 50 characters for file/folder names. The KW-AV50 can display ID3 Tags (ver. 1.0/1.1/2.2/2.3/2.4) for MP3 files, as well as WAV/WMA Tag information. USB portable audio players that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the DVD receiver's USB port (5V/1A), and the vehicle's ignition switch is set to ACC or On.

Note: This unit cannot recognize a USB device whose rating is other than 5V and exceeds 1A. You cannot connect a computer or portable HDD to the USB port of this unit.

iPod/iPhone AV Playback: The optional JVC KS-U30 USB A/V Cable For iPod/iPhone (105KSU30, sold separately) allows you to playback and control audio/video from your iPod or iPhone on this JVC multimedia head unit. The cable features a proprietary Apple iPod dock connector on one end and a male composite video and male stereo audio RCA connectors on other end along with a USB type-A connector. The cable plugs into the unit's rear-panel AV input and USB port. To playback video, the KW-AV50's rear-panel Video Input must be set to "iPod" in the unit's menu. Video can only be displayed while the vehicle is in park. You can also connect your iPod's USB/Docking cable to the unit's USB port for audio only playback from your iPod/iPhone. The head unit's rear-panel Audio Input must be set to "AV-IN", not "iPod".

Note: If you have an iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), or iPhone 5; use the Lighting-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect to the head unit. These Apple devices only support audio playback (no video output).

iPod/iPhone DAC Bypass: Because the JVC KW-AV50 uses its USB connection for audio & control transfer, your iPod/iPhone's stored music is loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality is maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal-to-Noise ratio up to 95dB. You can also choose to transfer the audio from your iPod/iPhone to the JVC KW-AV50 via an analog connection using the KS-U30 USB A/V Cable's stereo RCA connector. This allows you to listen to DRM protected audio files. The head unit's rear-panel Audio Input must be set to "iPod".

iPod/iPhone Control: You can choose to control your iPod/iPhone from the JVC head unit or from your iPod/iPhone's touchscreen or clickwheel. The KW-AV50 offers 3 control modes - Head Unit, iPod, and External.

      • Head Unit: From the head unit's front-panel controls you can search for music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Podcast, Genre, Composer, and Audiobook. You can search video by Playlist, Movies, Music Videos, TV Shows, and Video Podcasts. Once a Playlist or Category is selected, the content is listed in alphabetical order. The KW-AV50 also supports Repeat (file/all) and Random (album/all) playback functions of your iPod/iPhone.
      • iPod: You can choose to navigate your iPod or iPhone's stored music and videos from its clickwheel or touchscreen, like you are accustomed to during normal usage.
      • External (App Mode): External Mode lets you enjoy audio/video content from downloaded Apps (such as Pandora, iHeartRadio, Netflix, or YouTube, etc..) streamed to your Apple iPhone, on the KW-AV50 (using the JVC KSU-30 cable; sold separately). Audio content can be enjoyed from any iPhone. Video can only be output from the iPhone 4/4S. This mode offers no control of your iPhone. You will continue to use your iPhone's touchscreen to navigate your Apps. The External Mode's video function can only be accessed when the vehicle is in park and the hand-brake is fully engaged.

Note: Access to your iPhone's downloaded application will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet.

MotionX-GPS Drive Navigation Ready: The Motion X GPS Drive App is available from iTunes for your iPhone for only $0.99. There is a $2.99 per month subscription fee (or $19.99 per year) for the Voice Guidance feature. MotionX-GPS Drive turns your iPhone 4/4S (iOS 4.0 or later) and the JVC KW-AV50 into a personal navigation device for your vehicle. Providing full navigation features and song playback control from your iPhone 4/4S, MotioX-GPS Drive also displays its map data on the connected JVC multimedia receiver's widescreen monitor (via the JVC KSU-30 cable, sold separately). Your iPhone 4/4S displays a choice of MotionX-GPS Driver's feature/menu screens as a secondary display (for passenger), while continuing to show the map on the JVC receiver. It even works simultaneously with iPhone 4/4S song playback by muting or pausing music, then restoring your volume during voice guidance through your car speakers. The MotionX-GPS Drive Navigation application covers the United States & Canada.

iPod/iPhone Display: The KW-AV50 will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information of your stored music, regardless of control mode. The head unit will display Track number, Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song title, Album label, and Album Art. Your iPod/iPhone's downloaded apps will not display on the unit's LCD monitor.

iPod/iPhone Charging: While connected and the ignition switch is set to ACC or ON, the head unit's USB connection will power and charge your iPod/iPhone. If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.

iPod/iPhone Compatibility Chart: The JVC KW-AV50 is "Made for iPod/iPhone" compatible and supports the following iPod/iPhone model features (as of 10/16/2012):

      Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The JVC KW-AV50 utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The KW-AV50 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the KW-AV50 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the KW-AV50 are as follows:

      • CEA2006 Specs: 20 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
      • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 total watts)

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KW-AV50 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to low, the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to high, and the volume control will range from 0 to 50. The internal amp can also be turned off when all the speakers are powered by outboard amplifiers.

5ch/4V Preamp Outputs: The KW-AV50 is equipped with 5ch/4.0V preamp outputs (Front, Rear, Subwoofer). The front and rear preamp outputs allow fader control, while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading.

Subwoofer Control: You can adjust the KW-AV50's subwoofer level (-50 to +10) independently from the head unit's main volume control for added bass volume.

Built-in Crossovers: The JVC KW-AV50 features a built-in high-pass filter for the unit's front & rear speakers, and a low-pass filter for the unit's subwoofer output.

      • High-Pass Filter: You can activate a variable high-pass filter (40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 150, 180, 220 Hz or Through) for the unit's front & rear channels (speaker- or preamp-level), so low frequency signals are cut off from your system's front & rear speakers. The front & rear channel's high-pass filters can be set independently of one another.
      • Low-Pass Filter: The unit's subwoofer preamp output features a low-pass filter. In order to prevent high-frequencies from being sent to your system's subwoofers, you can set the cutoff frequency of the low-pass filter to 50, 60, 80, 100, 120 Hz or Through.

Speaker Select: You can select which type & size of speaker you have connected to the head unit. Choose from Standard (OEM/Factory), Narrow (4"/5"), Middle (6"/5x7"/6x8"), Wide (6x9").

Pro EQ: The KW-AV50 is equipped with JVC's Pro EQ. The integrated equalizer offers 8 preset sound modes (Flat, Natural, Dynamic, Vocal Boost, Bass Boost, Vibrant, and User) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The User mode allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 3-band parametric EQ (Frequency, Level, and Q-Factor).

      Tone

Note: The audio adjustments are memorized for each source until you adjust the sound again.

Loud (Loudness): This feature boosts low and high frequencies to produce a well-balanced sound at a low volume level. You can set the Loudness to On or Off.

Dynamic Range Compression: This function reduces a Dolby Digital soundtrack's dynamic range so you can hear quieter dialog without being overwhelmed by loud sections. You can choose a setting of Auto or On.

Volume Adjust: The input level of each source (other than FM) is adjustable relative to the FM radio volume, so there isn't a significant volume difference when changing sources. Each source is individually adjustable from -15 to +6.

Key-Touch Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

      Radio Functions

AM/FM Tuner: The JVC KW-AV50  features a built-in AM/FM tuner with manual, seek, and preset tuning.

RDS: The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible AM/FM stations,

Preset Tuning: You can store a total of 18 FM stations presets and 6 AM station presets. The radio allows you to set your AM/FM stations manually or automatically.

IF Filter: You can also switch the tuner's IF filter to Wide or Auto to increase/decrease the sensitivity.

Local: You can select this function to only tune in stations with sufficient signal strength.

Mono Mode: You can activate the monaural mode to improve FM reception, when a station is week. The stereo effect will be lost.

US/European Tuning: You can set the built-in AM/FM tuner between US standard and European tuning spacing.

Satellite Radio Ready: There are several options for connecting an optional XM or SIRIUS Satellite Radio receiver to this head unit.

      • SIRIUS: The JVC KW-AV50 is compatible with the SiriusConnect Universal Tuner and Plug & Play Dock.
        • SiriusConnect Tuner: Connect the optional SC-C1 SiriusConnect vehicle tuner (item number 607SCC1) and the JVC KS-SRA100 SIRIUS adapter (item number 105KSRA100) - package # 700SIRJVC1, sold separately.
        • SiriusConnect Dock: Select dock-and-play and portable SIRIUS radios can be controlled using the JVC KS-SRA100 SIRIUS adapter (item number 105KSRA100, sold separately) and the SC-VDOC1 dock (item number 607SCVDOC1, sold separately).
      • XM: A portable XM Satellite Radio receiver can be connected to the head unit via the front-panel auxiliary input or a JVC auxiliary input adapter, such as the KS-U57 or KS-U58 (sold separately).
Note: A subscription is also required to receive satellite radio programming from SIRIUS or XM.

      AV Connections

Video Output: The rear-panel Video Output consists of a  composite video jack that allows you to connect an optional external monitor. You can watch the same audio/video source that is being played on the DVD receiver on your connected external monitor. You can choose one of the following monitor types for the output to the external monitor(s):

      • 16:9: Select this when the aspect ratio of your monitor is 16:9.
      • 4:3 Letter Box: Select this when the aspect ratio of your monitor is 4:3, when viewing a widescreen picture black bars appear on the top and bottom of the screen.
      • 4:3 Pan Scan: Select this when the aspect ratio of your monitor is 4:3, when viewing a widescreen picture, the black bars do not appear; however, the left and right edges of the picture will not be shown on screen.

Front-Panel A/V Input: The JVC KW-AV50 is equipped with a front-panel 3.5mm A/V input for connecting an external audio/video source, such as a portable digital audio player.

Audio/Video Input: The rear-panel audio/video input consists of left and right RCA audio jacks and an RCA composite video jack, allowing you to connect external equipment to this head unit. The audio/video input can be set to one of the following modes:

      • AV IN: Choose when connecting an A/V component like a game system.
      • iPod Video: Select when connecting your iPod using the optional USB/Video cable (105KSU30, sold separately).
      • BT: Select when connecting the optional JVC Bluetooth adapter (KS-BTA100, sold separately).

Note: You cannot connect both the KS-BTA100 Bluetooth adapter & the KS-U30 iPod adapter, since they share the same AV input.

Camera In: The rear-panel Camera input consists of a composite video connector which allows you to connect an optional rear-view camera (105KVCM10, sold separately). The unit features a reverse gear signal wire, that when connected to your vehicle's reverse light circuit, will automatically switch the KW-AV50's display to the rear-view camera input. Automatic video switching takes approximately 1.5 seconds.

Note: Audio from your music source will continue playing, while the back-up camera is displayed.

Optional Input Adapter: An optional JVC Line Input Adapter (257KSU58) or the P.I.E. Auxiliary Input Adapter for JVC (469JVCJRCA), both sold separately, may be used to provide an additional auxiliary audio input on this unit. This feature allows you to connect a portable audio player, such as a portable MP3 player, to this unit as an additional audio source. The adapter connects to the J-port on this unit.

      Bluetooth/Remote Control

Optional Bluetooth: The unit's rear-panel AV input can also be used to connect JVC's KS-BTA100 Bluetooth Adapter (105KSBTA10, sold separately). The KW-AV50 requires a male stereo RCA-to-female 3.5mm converter cable (sold separately) to connect the KS-BTA100 Bluetooth adapter. The head unit's AV input must also be set to "Bluetooth" in the menu. The KS-BTA100 gives you hands-free communication from your compatible Bluetooth mobile phone and wireless streaming audio from a Bluetooth enabled digital audio player. The optional JVC Bluetooth Adapter includes a super-sensitive microphone, an Answer/End button, and playback controls. The KW-AV50 can be set to automatically mute any music audio to your vehicle's speakers so you can listen to your telephone call using your car speakers.

Note: Not all Bluetooth devices will be compatible. Visit the JVC Mobile Entertainment Bluetooth Support Page for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled devices.

Optional Wireless Remote: The JVC KW-AV50 is wireless remote controller ready and supports the JVC RM-RK252P IR wireless remote control (sold separately).

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input wire (blue/yellow) within the included wiring harness that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

      Amazing value

The best thing about this unit is it's interface with the iPhone. Being able to control my iTunes library from the display, and use navigation for only $300? It is less than half the price of other similarly featured units. The speed is a bit slow, and the interface isn't the best, but feature for feature it is an amazing value.
      Pros:
      Value, iPhone/iPod interface
      Cons:
      Slow, clunky interface

Could be a lot more user friendly...nav system sucks!

Written By Michael W, Arizona on Saturday, January 05, 2013

I bought the system because I liked the styling and it has XM and NAV capability, but the nav system sucks! The problem is that it only works with an I-Phone...you can download the nav apps on an IPod but although it will work on the IPod it WILL NOT WORK on the unit! So, unless you already have an IPhone or planning to spend $$$ to get one just to use on the system it's not worth buying if you need the nav system. Also, the manual really isn't that user friendly...you have to "navigate" thru several pages just to operate one portion of the system. One more downfall, the unit is larger than a 4" opening so you have to do some mods to make it fit the aftermarket faceplate.
      Pros:
Nice system and price, easy to wire, nice sound and display setting.
      Cons:
Navigation system sucks! It should be universal to work with any IPhone or Smartphone which has navigational capabilities!

After using this receiver for a solid week, i have no problem in telling you that this is a great multimedia receiver for the money. Aside from not having the GPS and bluetooth built in it has everything and if you have to have GPS you can download an app for .99 cents on your iPhone and it will give you voice as well as display on your recover.
      Pros:
Looks great, many great features, responsive touch screen
      Cons:
no bluetooth ore built in gps.

great head unit. install was ever so simple. every thing fit great aside from the bezel that goes around the face of unit doesn't fit with the dash kit but still looks great with out it, just a very small gap around the unit but cant really notice. the sound is great and the adjustments on the EQ and crossover are easy to understand and simple to use love how i can perfect the sound of any audio the screen is bright and clear and easy to use. the control for iPhone on the unit is great, also using usb thumb drive full of music videos is easy to navigate and plays quickly
      Pros:
      all
      Cons:
could be a little cheaper on price but still amazing for the price

I bought this unit about two months ago. I installed it in less then a hour so i guess that is a good thing. I enjoyed the option to watch videos while stuck in traffic multiple times but other then that i wish i would have went with something with more RMS but hey you get what you pay for ha.
      Pros:

Radio seems really cool, just installed it, ran into a problem using the P.I.E. iPod/iPhone USB adapter with my iPhone 4S. I hooked up the adapter to my JVC, it started charging my iPhone 4S, and started playing from my playlist immediately. Unfortunately, there was no sound coming through the receiver. Also, when reading through the instruction booklet, it states that you can not get video from your iPod or iPhone without using the JVC KS-U30 iPod A/V cable. Also, if you want to use the MotionX-GPS app, you'll have to use the JVC cable. Spend the extra $5 and get the JVC cable. Shouldn't have tried to save $5 :(

      Nice dvd receiver

Written By Jeff, Columbus, ohio on Monday, June 04, 2012

Nice Dvd receiver . I am very pleased with this unit . This is the 3rd dvd receiver I have owned ( 3 different vehicals) . For the price you pay for this unit , it is unbeatable . Much more robust than others I have installed . Controls are simple and fairly easy to understand . If you are even a little tech savvy you will not need to get the book out to navigate through the screens . Nice bright display , sadly the sun glare is fairly significant . Although the sunglare is less than any other unit I have owned , it still renders the screen almost unveiwable depending on the angle of install and time of day . The touchscreen is amazing , lots of large easy to see buttons on the display . Sensitivity of the touchscreen is outstanding , almost to a fault (brushing a stray hair of the display will change scenes if you are playing a dvd). The removable face comes off easy and locks in securely . Sound quality is also amazing . FM and AM stations come in clearly ( make sure you hook up your factory antenna amplifier if your factory unit had the connection for it ) . Also , thank you crutchfield staff for the great tech support when I installed this unit , you guys are amazing .
      Pros:
Great sound , lots of bang for your buck , robust detachable face . Great install support and free install kits .
      Cons:
Sun glare makes daytime viewing difficult depending on your install angle (that goes for all these dvd receivers , the jvc is better but what can you do? )

This receiver is first rate in every respect! The Crutchfield buying experience is also first rate, from emails to shipping time to adapter kits. I can't imagine needing anything more.
      Pros:
I am pretty mechanically and electrically inclined, but for most first time installers ( and really anyone who wants a professional factory installed look) I would very much recommend the Crutchfield extras, such as vehicle specific faceplate adapters and pluggin adapters. You might be able to buy this a couple of dollars cheaper somewhere else (Ebay..Amazon) without the extras, but trust me you'll be disappointed! I didn't need the tech advice, but that's another Crutchfield advantage!
      Cons:
I really haven't found any and I'm using about every feature imagineable! People who complain about the volume control must have greasy fingers! Trust me you are going to love this! You can't get anyother unit with the GPS capability for this price! Awesome!

      Cons:
radio sucks as bad as the volume knob. wish it worked perfect straight out of the box.

Very good unit. Touch screen works well. Love all the different crossover settings. Love all the upgrade options. iPod control is top notch!
      Pros:
Easy install. All colors are to be custom. Great sound. iPod control. Touch screen
      Cons:
Subwoofer out is a single line. USB is only on back, not a huge deal to me, but some might like a front one too.

I had the same problem Bob had of the unit randomly not powering up after several on and off cycles. I returned it for a replacement of the same model only to have the same issue. It's in my '03 Ranger XLT if that matters. Thankfully Crutchfield has been very cooperative about resolving my problem, which involves swapping the JVC for a different brand. I'm going with the Sony XAV 63 that hasn't been reviewed yet. Maybe I'll be the first to review it.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

i was in the market for a dvd headunit with multimedia features and a detachable faceplate and saw the jvc av-50. it gives my 1999 infiniti i30 a more updated and a more factory look that is found in newer vehicles. as far as its features such as ipod connectivity, dvd video, bluetooth etc, its a huge step up from my previous headunit the jvc avx-11. the screen menu and buttons have vibrant colors that make the unit very attractive.
      Pros:
a detachable faceplate is one of the biggest plusses about this unit. i park in the street in areas that have alot of crime so a faceplate is a must. another good thing about this radio is its various features and multimedia options.
      Cons:
the internal amplifier could be better. i am the type of guy who likes loud music with some bass and treble. the internal amplifier distorts and makes a popping sound in the speakers if you really try to crank it . i am going to invest in a mini amp like the alpine or rockford fosgate model to power my four speakers.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had this installed for about two weeks now and have been very favorably impressed. I bought this model because I wanted the largest screen I could get while still having a real volume knob, and I didn't want lots of bells and whistles that I'd never use (remote control, bluetooth, Pandora, navigation, etc).

You will definitely want to use a rear support bracket when installing this - it's fairly heavy. The quality of the supplied third-party mounting kit (for my 2005 GMC Canyon) was mediocre and the instructions were gibberish, but after a bunch of test fitting it worked fine and you can barely see it once the truck's center trim panel is reinstalled. As another reviewer notes below, simply grounding the parking brake interlock wire allows the unit to play movies. There's a handy grounding tab provided on the back of the unit if you don't feel like hacking into your brake system wiring.

I noticed several reviews here and on other sites that identified potential problems with the unit, but I haven't had any of them. I suspect the reset problems others have had are due to a weak car battery rather than a problem with the unit. If you burn MP3s to a CD or DVD to play in the unit, make sure you burn the disc using "disc at once" and "finalize disc" options in your burner program. The first disc I tried without doing this took 90 seconds to start playing; burning it the right way allows it to start in about 10 seconds (DVD with 800 MP3s on it).
      Pros:
Great sound - equal to or better than the Blaupunkt Casablanca it replaced. Great display image quality. Intuitive user interface and easy menu structure. Very clean look in the dash. Rear USB input cable is easy to hide in the glove compartment. Reasonable price.
      Cons:
Volume knob should be textured, although it is easy enough to use as-is. Unit does not have a true "off" button - push and hold "src" button to turn off the music, but most of the display stays active. I had hoped for just a simple clock display when off. I recommend setting the "IF bandwidth" to "wide" rather than the default "Auto", otherwise the radio randomly adjusts the IF bandwith which results in the FM audio sounding kind of hollow at times.

      KW-AV50

Installed in a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy to use, not so easy to wire it to my Grand Am Monsoon system, sound quality poor, may need to pull yet again to confirm it is wired correctly
      Pros:
shipped quick, easy to program, first contact to tech support not particularly helpful, second was very helpful. I may still need another call.
      Cons:
UPS delivered at random 2X when I was not at home, after that your screwed. The wiring mate kit was purchased but is not plug and play, i was disappointed. The wiring information provided assume you understand a very small diagram on the unit and speak JVC, sound of the Monsoon was better. Had to do a dashboard cut- your on your own with that.

      Great Value

I was a little hesitant to buy this, as there aren't many reviews, but figured I'd take a chance since Crutchfield has a good return policy. Works great. Boots in 12 seconds. the volume knob is slippery, but you don't need to use it. Make circles with your finger on the screen and the volume adjusts. Ipod audio and data functions via standard ipod dock cable . Video from ipod requires special cable. I've only had it a week, but I've not had any issues, no regrets. There is a cable from the unit that must be connected to the parking brake circuit, which when GROUNDED by engaging the parking brake, allows videos to play. Nice safety feature. I've always had good luck with JVC.
      Pros:
Quality screen. I was afraid the screen would be crap at this pricepoint, but it is good. Obviously a capacitative screen.
      Cons:
Not all functions/controls are intuitive. Have to read the manual.
