Why add a powered subwoofer?

A powered subwoofer gives you bass you can feel as well as hear. Our customers love the depth and impact their subs add to music and movies. We hear comments like "it brings out sounds I didn't know existed in discs I've watched a million times." Powered subwoofers aren't just for big bass that rattles your picture frames; they can also deliver tight, accurate lows. If you haven't shopped for a powered sub in a while, you might be surprised at how small they get. Look for an ultra-compact model if you want to tuck your sub away under an end table or in a corner.

    Features

Overview: The Mirage Omni-S8 is a compact powered subwoofer that features an 8" woofer and a 100 watt internal amplifier.

Ribbed Elliptical Surround: The Omni-S8 features a woofer with a Ribbed Elliptical Surround, which is a proprietary component that has been designed to increase excursion, eliminate distortion and raise efficiency. This feature eliminates any surround dimpling so this subwoofer can play lower with greater output and fidelity.

Bass Reflex Cabinet: The down firing port of the Omni-S8 increases output without port noise, using the floor as a loading surface to augment the yield of this unique subwoofer which allows the subwoofer to deliver natural and lifelike sound.

Amplifier Section: The powered subwoofer has a built-in 100 watt RMS internal amplifier.

Driver: The Omni-S8 feature a front firing 8-inch titanium deposit hybrid woofer with a ribbed elliptical surround which performs like a much large subwoofer and has a frequency response down to 27Hz.

Status Indicator: The LED found on the front panel will illuminate when the subwoofer is connected to an AC source and when the unit is active. The LED will display in red when the unit is plugged in but is not receiving a signal and will display green when the unit is receiving a signal.

    Controls

Front Panel Controls: The powered subwoofer uses front panel controls to make it easy to adjust the volume and crossover at any time.

Subwoofer Level: This knob can be adjusted to control the level of output from your subwoofer. The level chosen should allow the subwoofer to blend its output with that of the rest of your audio system.

Frequency Control: This control allows for the adjustment of the low-pass filter. Adjustments can be made from 40Hz to 120Hz. This will determine the highest frequency that the subwoofer will play.

Phase Control: This switch allows for the adjustment of the phase of the subwoofer, in relation to the speakers used in your system. You can choose either 0 degrees or 180 degrees.

Filter Mode: This switch allows for the selection of either "Filter On" or "Filter Off". Choose "Filter Off" when you are using a receiver with a dedicated LFE out that has its own crossover filter.

Power Mode: This is the only control function that is found on the rear panel. This switch can be set to either On, Off or Auto. If the switch is in the Off position, the subwoofer will not power up. If the switch is in the On position, it will constantly remain on. When the switch is in the Auto position, when a signal is present the subwoofer will turn on and when will automatically turn off several minutes after a signal is no longer present.

    Connections

Sub Input: This input is an RCA type mono input that will be hooked up to your receiver's subwoofer output.

High Level Input: These are spring post type speaker connectors. The high-level inputs are designed to be used with receiver or amplifiers that do no incorporate any RCA type subwoofer outputs.

    Happy so Far!

Written By DanB, Long Island, NY on Monday, March 11, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far I am very happy with the performance of the sub. My main reason for getting this particular model was the size of the box and also having 3 power options (auto, on, off). My previous sub (older velodyne which I still love) was not very sensitive to input from my receiver and would not often turn on since it only had an auto on function. The Omni S8 is much more sensitive to input and I have not had to use the "on" function as of this point. I am not fully through the "break in" time of 50 hours, but I will say that the sub sounds great and blends very nicely with my Energy Take 5 set. It produces good bass, but it's not quite as house shaking as something bigger. If you know what to expect from an 8" sub, then you should be very happy with the S8. If I had more room I probably would have gone with something else given the price, but I am happy overall.
    Pros:
Compact size with good, quality sound which will blend into a small speaker setup. Will definitely fill most any room with full sound, especially if this is the price point/size you are looking at. Good input sensitivity.
    Cons:
Does not shake the house. Was a little more expensive than similar sized subs.

This speaker is a very musical subwoofer--better articulation than other subwoofers I have heard. It is also a very good looking unit, and ideal for my small to medium sized listening area.
    Pros:
Great sound. Very easy to position since the port is floor-loaded. Location of the controls is ideal. Great build quality, especially for the price.
    Cons:
    None.

    Superb Small Sub

Written By HDW, Portland, OR on Tuesday, November 27, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Tremendous little performer. I bought a pair of Klipsch G-12 flat panel speakers and I needed a sub to go with them. I was going to get the smallest Klipsch sub, but discovered that it wouldn't fit in the small space I had intended for it. Mirage Omni S8 to the rescue, and for less money, with a clearance of 1/8" on each side, it *just* made it. I couldn't be happier with the bottom they provide, easy low end punch, clean deep bass without being mushy. I've had it for two months now and I've finally got it dialed in... I had started with crushing bass but over the weeks, eased it back some, then brought it back up to find the perfect sound. I very rarely do these reviews, but I'm so pleased with the spectaluar performance of the Mirage Omni S8, it's worth sharing.
    Pros:
    Clean crisp bass
    Cons:
    None

    No power

I unfortunately got the scratch and dent model. I hooked it up and there was no power at all. I was told by advisor they are like new with a few cosmetic things wrong with them. That was okay with me, but I wasn't expecting no power. I am waiting to see what Crutchfield will do about this.
Crutchfield response on Monday, August 20, 2012
Our Scratch & Dent models are tested to make sure they are in working order. It's hard to say what went wrong in this case, but we issued a replacement.

    Very Satisfactory Small Sub

Written By Micro Seiki Man, Sacramento, CA on Friday, June 29, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have become an enthusiast of small, powered, "musical" subwoofers to warm the sound in mid-capacity stereo TV and non-audiophile Audio systems. I don't want to shake the windows or scare the pets. I like balanced low-frequency filler sound that can also surprise me with power and clarity in appropriate passages. The Mirage Omni S8 fits the bill perfectly. It produces clear, sharp, contollable sub-bass without much tendency to be boomy. I should mention that I have only used an "LE" connection on the receiver for the source. If I set the sub volume consistent with program content at modest levels, louder passages are also produced effortlessly and in balance with the higher frequencies. The S8 has surprised me several times with the performance of which it is capable, especially for its small size. It may not be "The Bomb", but it's "The Grenade", dude! I think it's perfect for my type of applications.

The first S8 I received had been ordered as "scratch and dent", but arrived in a beat-up box, broken. Crutchfield did not hesitate to replace it at no cost to me with a NEW S8 promptly, while I returned the original one at the shipper's expense. I can't ask for better service than that from any vender. Hooray, Crutchfield!
    Pros:
    Price Size Controls Quality Performance
    Cons:
Has High- and Low-Level inputs only; there are no High-Level outputs to satellites if desired Requires 50 hours break-in time, such as playing a CD over and over through it, prior to set-up

I place the sub behind my entertainment center and ran Audessey on my Denon AVR-2807. Once up and running we watched Clash of th E Titans on Blu-Ray and the room was shaking from this 8 inch driver? Wow this thing has even surpassed my greatest hopes even at this price point. Very fast and tight sounding bass with very low distortion, I couldn't be happier.
    Pros:
Footprint, refined and effortless sound, excellent build quality especially at this price point.

    LOVIN IT!

Written By DavidJ, Framingham, MA on Tuesday, April 03, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this sub to use with Martin Logan Motion 12's (great midrange and highs - bottom needs a little help) in my basement 2.1 set up, but decided to "test it" with my main 5.1 system, and now I cant seem to part with it. Playing movies, SACD & DVDA's, CD's - you name it, it sounds great. No subteranean lows, but fast, musical, accurate lows that make everything sound better. Surpassed my expectations.
    Pros:
Blends easily with your system Accurate, punchy, musical
    Cons:
Not the last word in really low bass, but hey, its an 8" compact sub!

    Clean Controlled Performance

Written By Anonymous, Minneapolis, MN on Thursday, March 29, 2012

This modestly priced sub woofer is perfect for providing the missing lower frequency sound you need. I come from an audiophile background and I notice boom and mud in any sub woofer very quickly. I use a pair of these in a higher end system for both music and film. They are clean, well controlled and blend into the sonic hologram beautifully. Plenty of punch for medium size rooms. Good fit and finish quality. Mirage has a full time staff to answer your most technical questions about this unit. What a bargain it is!
    Pros:
Enough controls without "over doing" it. Great musicality but up to the task of explosion laden action movies. Easy to love!
    Cons:
The built in amplifier is 100 watts. Clean sounding, but might need help in a larger room.

    An Audiophile Sub

Written By JT, Wilmington, NC on Saturday, March 24, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is clearly an audiophile subwoofer. Unlike some that offer only boom and no definition, this one is nicely defined, tight and fast. The controls, which are accurate and sensitive, are conveniently placed on the front, saving always have to tilt the unit forward (or move it altogether) to see what you're doing when changing volume or timbre. I have mine running at quite a low volume, well away from the nearest EPOS ELS-3, providing me with everthing I need. The frequency tuning is also quite sensitive, allowing you to dial in exactly where it needs to be. If you want/need it to crank, it certainly will, but I like it for it's delicacy and speed.
    Pros:
Tight, fast, articulate. Small and easy to place, with conveniently placed controls.
    Cons:
    None

    SUB FOUND!

Written By Tom K, Farmington, Mn on Saturday, March 03, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Once again, Crutchfield has exceeded expectations! I have been researching for over one year, not ready to buy until sure. When this MIRAGE dropped to $249- I finally decided to go Mirage Omni S8. Not even broken in yet, the sub provided the "something" I was missing. I have the Marantz SR 6003, (from Crutchfield), the Marantz BD 7004, (Crutchfield), and the Marantz CC4003 5-disc (you guessed it, Crutchfield), and Polk Audio RTi-7's. I added the Mirage Sub, set Fronts "Large", low-pass 80Hz, and phase 0, and sub volume at midway, and WAS DIALED IN. Ziggy from Crutchfield handled my order, and in 6 days sub was found! Thanks to Ziggy, Crutchfield (service extraordinarre), I am enjoying music/movies for a fantastic price overall, with the best customer satisfaction I could have imagined! I will be back to Crutchfield for more, and will tell friends. (My Dad is soon to buy a TV)
    Pros:
    Everything, Crutchfield, Ziggy.
    Cons:
    Nothing

Mirage Omni S8 is a Great Value

Written By John S., Winter Springs, FL on Thursday, September 15, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Mirage Omni S8 is a great subwoofer for the price. It is being utilized with a Yamaha Amplifier so the crossover is not being used. I only have the S8 on half output and it is cranking out solid quality low frequency sounds. Even at high output, the bass tones are very crisp. Great Product.

Perfect size for my den, has plenty of low bass response and power. Really don't need to get anything bigger or more powerful. Feels very solid and well built. Something rare, not built in China! Actually made in Canada, imagine that. Nice controls, and is easy to set up. Five stars in my book.

this sub has more than enough boom for the buck. thought about
purchasing the S10...would have been a waste of money. this sub is great
for music as well as movies. while paired to my nanosat prestige system it
feels as though the movies have come to me. you may find less expensive
hardware at other websites, but no one has customer service or product
availability like crutchfield. i've been dealing with them off and on for about
20 years...and never been disappointed. great staff and products...who
