Grado

Our take on the Grado SR325is

by Dave Bar

Advanced design for punchy, accurate Grado sound

Underneath their cool, retro looking metal exterior, Grado's SR325is headphones boast time-tested audio technology for high-impact sound that'll rock your tunes with the kind of punchy low-end and dynamics usually unheard of in this price range. You'll hear clear, highly articulated sound — drums with plenty of "snap" and body, guitars and acoustic instruments with natural warmth and openness, plus taut, tuneful bass. These Grados can be driven using the headphone outputs on most home audio systems, and even work great with a portable player or laptop using Grado's optional miniplug adapter. But they'll really sound their best with the addition of a headphone amplifier.

Born in Brooklyn and built to perform

Each pair of SR325is headphones is still made right in Brooklyn, New York where the Grado family has been building award-winning audio gear for almost 60 years. The vented "open-air" earcup design makes for powerful, extended low frequency response and a more spacious soundstage. Hybrid metal/plastic enclosures and aluminum air chambers give you finely-detailed, crystalline highs. The ultra-high purity copper voice coils and sturdy eight-conductor connecting cable provide a smooth, refined sound with a wide frequency response that lets you hear all the music. A genuine leather headband is the nice final touch to these high-quality 'phones.

From the review Grado SR325is Headphones: Quality sound and industrial chic

"I had no complaints with how the SR325is headphones handled the odd meanderings of my song collection. All the tracks were clear, clean, and, most importantly, fairly free of color. I felt like I was getting a lot of the original engineers' intent... If you can swing a headphone amp in the bargain, you'll have a listening solution that can make your music collection come alive, while adding a touch of "industrial chic" to your favorite listening space."

— Woody, Crutchfield A/V Writer

    Features

Vented diaphragm: Grado headphones have a vented diaphragm design for a large, airy, three-dimensional sound. The large aluminum air chamber is machined from a special non-resonant, hard alloy to ensure the earphone chamber has no "ringing" which might obscure detail or add coloration.

Drivers: The diaphragm is made of a low mass polymer, developed with the compliance of the suspension in mind to achieve the desired low frequency response. The diaphragm's total mass is designed to provide a full 20 kHz bandwidth, while avoiding break-up at lower frequencies. High power neodymium magnets maximize efficiency and minimize weight. The left and right drivers are matched to within 0.05 dB for exact imaging.

Voice Coil: The SR325is' voice-coils are wound from ultra-high purity, long crystal (UHPLC) oxygen free copper. This high conductivity copper yields a clear transmission and minimizes coloration, resulting in smooth, clean and dynamic sound output.

Connecting Cord: Grado also uses UHPLC copper in the cable. The new 8-conductor cable design improves the control and stability in the upper and lower frequency range.

    Outstanding sound, abysmal comfort.

Written By Tom, Roanoke, VA on Monday, March 04, 2013

If you're interested in the world of hi-fi audio, but aren't ready to make the sizable investment that can come along with it, this one piece of gear should be on your short list of items to audition. They're an outstanding value that few others can even come close to matching at this price point. Prepare to fall in love with your music library all over again!

For starters, the construction is top notch. The grills are made of a nice metal, as are the guiding rods that adjust the sizing. A minimal amount of plastic is used on the device and it feels very well made. The earcups are made of a hard foam, which quickly becomes softer with use.

The sound, of course, is the star of the show! Grado is known for their very up front, highly aggressive musical presentation, and the 325i's are no exception to this. They present you with an absolutely love it, or hate it sound signature. They're not a laid back listen, but they're extremely musical and a lot of fun!

The stereo imaging is fantastic, the bass, while somewhat restrained, is visceral, yet articulate, and the highs are crisp with exceptional resolution; however, the true star of the show here is the absolutely fantastic midrange. It's liquid smooth and presents itself wonderfully! The sound is huge for a set of cans this size, and enormously impressive.

Sadly, though, the soundstage is there, but it's not up to par with the rest of the presentation. Also, the comfort level is atrocious.
    Pros:
    - They present a fun, forward, and revealing sound that's highly musical. - Stereo Imaging is absolutely top notch. - Beautiful midrange. - Excellent construction with classy looks. - Low impedance and easy to drive with a variety of entry level headphone amps ( I highly recommend the AudioQuest DragonFly USB DAC/AMP. - The bass, while somewhat restrained, is wonderfully rich with visceral impact. Side note: The service i received at the Crutchfield retail store in Harrisonburg was outst
    Cons:
-The comfort level is atrocious. They're are not comfortable to wear for extended listening sessions and will benefit from immediate ear cup replacements. I recommend the Grado L-Cush pads. They can be found and ordered online. These will make them significantly more comfortable. - Not exactly a con, but this is an open back headphone, which are not designed to be used in quiet areas. - The sound staging isn't fantastic, but respectable. - No 1/4 to 1/8 adapter included.

    Loving my Grado's

Written By Nick, Boston Ma on Thursday, February 14, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sr325is is the lowest priced headphone in the Grado line I would buy. Overall they have a good sound and I am pleased with my purchase. Descent bass but missing impact on the lowest notes. The treble is strong and fairly clear which is good for an older person like myself. The treble is not over done but it is slightly emphasized. They are open backed so they do leak a lot of sound into the room. As noted by others the comfort factor is minimal but good for an hour or so. If I had more money I would have picked another pair but at this prices I like the Grado's enough that I would buy them again.
    Pros:
Good overall sound quality. Sound plenty loud directly attached to my computer.
    Cons:
They are not that comfortable. You may need a 1/4 to 1/8 inch plug converter which is not included.

    Excellent sounding headphones

Written By Brent, Richland, Wa on Saturday, February 02, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these together with a nuForce iDo DAC headphone amp. I use these at work with lossless music sourced from an iPad 2 through the iDo (and the separate 1/4 to mini plug adapter) or at home through a 15 ft extension cable into my Onkyo 8522 receiver. Home sources are an Apple TV, connected by HDMI through a Samsung TV and then by analog out from the TV to the receiver, or a Motorola cable box with analog outputs directly to the receiver.

The sound quality of these are already pretty good when connected directly to the iPad (through the 1/4 to mini adapter) but with the iDo or through the 8522 is in a whole different league. Initially, I was underwhelmed and not having the audiophile Nirvana I had expected but I am convinced the sound quality of these improved greatly over the first few weeks, with tens of hours of total listening time. I hear instruments and effects in albums I have been listening to for 20 years that I have never heard before. In good recordings, the instruments sound precisely positioned on a very wide stage. Acoustic instruments sound very natural - you can hear the bow hairs sliding on the strings of a fiddle and both little clicks associated with notes played on the two-string courses of a mandolin. I can hear the valves on John Coltrane's sax working like he's in the room with me. This is my first foray into serious audiophile gear so I have no reference for comparison, but I feel like I easily get my 300 dollars worth out of these.
    Pros:
My whole 500+ LP collection sounds new again.
    Cons:
Now I am craving expensive upgrades to components upstream in my home stereo signal chain.

    Thumbs Up for Grado

Written By John3, Yankton, SD on Sunday, January 20, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm not an audiophile but recently purchased a vintage stereo system with eviction notice speakers. These Grados are nice when I don't want to disturb the peace and work nice with the circa 1972 Marantz. The ear foam could probably be more comfortable but after years of wrestling, I really don't notice. The sound is very good quality. I figure if I'm only getting one, it might as well be one of the best and made in the US.
    Pros:
Great sound and made in Brooklyn in the good old USA.
    Cons:
    Could be a little cheaper.

    Pretty damn good

Written By Steve K, Harrisburg, PA on Friday, December 28, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Grado's 325's are as advertised. Superior sound, separation, crisp, no muddiness. Makes many poor recordings sound fresh and clear. It sounds............perfect and totally natural. Their oversized cord easily adapts to an IPod, where the volume is more than enough to satisfy. the 325's will make you IPod jump with the best sounding music you'll hear this side of $1000. And, they're really cool, too. I have an older Grado SR80 set, which is very good, too, but the Grado325 is way better. Forget the 'dorky' looks you may get; these cans rock better then anything else I've tried, sounding equally good with rock, pop, classical, folk, solo piano, country, punk, ect. Younger folks may balk at the design, but they're missing-out on a far better product, by choosing cool looks over very cool performance. Besides, the Grado's look kinda cool, too. Very retro with state-of-the-art performance. Can anyone say "audiophile' ?
    Pros:
Superior sound quality, fullness of depth, no detectable 'muddiness', clear, crisp, very good 'separation', for those who want top-notch sound and can appreciate its nuances.
    Cons:
exterior plastic part manufacture could be a little cleaner, less cheap looking.

    Fantastic sound, but it leaks

Written By Eamonn M., Conway, AR on Friday, May 25, 2012

Recently purchased these as a 17th birthday present for myself and overall I am extremely pleased with the product. These are my first high quality cans and I will definitely be buying more Grado in the future.
    Pros:
These headphones reproduce an amazing sound. Subtle harmonies are bold and clean, acoustic guitar has real life and vocals are clean and crisp. The retro style is very hipster-chic and I found them to be very comfortable.
    Cons:
The only con I found to these headphones is the sound leaking. The open-back design allows any music I'm listening to to be heard by those near me. That makes these headphones less than perfect for airplane or road travel. And similarly, there is very little buffer between external sound and the music. These, however, are the only cons I've found.

    Grado SR325is

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Grado SR325i Headphones are a incredible value. I have put over a good 100 hours on them and the sound just gets better! You can spend a lot more money for other brands, but you can't get that pure natural sound that the Grado SR325i's put out. While they sound best with a home or pro system they are right on with a portable player ipod etc. Also try the Grado SR80i's . I think they are very good value as well

I am amazed with the clarity of these headphones. My wife is a recording artist and sound quality is the most important, these satisfy the need. Over the years I have had Sennheiser, Bose and the high end Beats by Dr Dre headphones and they are all really good headphones. That being said I will never spend money on anything but Grado equipment from here forward, these headphones go beyond really good to fantastic sound reproduction. I guess what I am saying is if you buy something other than these headphones you missed the boat. I love them almost as much as my children. You will not be disappointed.

    Sound clarity, comfort

    none

    Grado SR325is - Excellent headphones!

Written By Max B., Little Rock, AR on Monday, January 30, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These headphones are everything I expected. Excellent quality at a fair price. Considered and listened to a number of similarly priced and reviewed sets including B&W,Sennheiser(second choice and still interested in getting a set) - went with Brian's recommendation without hearing Grado's based on my description of what I was looking for. Agree not most comfortable but I was looking for best sound and these deliver the sound I was hoping for. Own Bose, son has new Beats - no comparison, Grado's are cleaner, more open and completely cover the entire musical spectrum IMO. Crutchfield customer service was excellent as usual and delivery was quick and dependable. The follow up Thank You notes are a great touch. Be sure to order the adapter for your Ipod as it is a separate item. Will look to pick up an affordable headphone amp next for "best possible" performance but not absolutely necessary to get "great" sound.

    Best headphones I've ever used

Written By Scott, VB, Va on Wednesday, August 10, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are very nice headphones with good spatial detail and crisp sound. They seem very sturdy, which is plus for me since I will use them quite a bit. The only reason for not giving it a 5th star is that since they have "on ear" design, they will probably become a little uncomfortable with prolonged use. I would definitely recommend a headphone amplifier. I'm using my Grados with a NuForce uDAC-2 with excellent results. I thought about the Grado amplifier, but the price was too high for my budget.
