Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Alpine CDE-100

      Installed in a 1990 Dodge D Series
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very easy install, and with the install kit provided by Crutchfield, it was super easy. It went into a 1990 Dodge D250, with the diesel engine. So far, no issues with the vibrations in a rough riding truck! It replaced the original factory cassette unit. This unit has much better sound, and I have not had issues with the FM reception. I do live in a rural area as well. Since I like CD's and mp3's, FM reception is not a big concern.
      Pros:
      Easy install, great sound!
      Cons:
Buttons could be more intuitive, but once you get familiar with them, it's not so bad.

Installed in a 1997 Chrysler Sebring LXI
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced a factory Chrysler unit with this unit and overall I am pleased with the performance and value. It was easy to install thanks to the instructions, wiring harness adaptor and installation kit that was provided with the receiver. There are a few things that could be better such as the button to remove the face plate is really close to the button to eject the CD and the FM tuner does not pick up stations as well as the factory unit. Those are minor things and as I said overall I am pleased with my purchase
      Pros:
Easy install , great sound for the money, everything you need is in the box
      Cons:
      FM tuner could be better,

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed very easily. Nice display. Antenna reception has something to be desired. Stock radio had better reception, so I'm ruling out an antenna problem.
      Pros:
      Simple adjustments. Priced right.
      Cons:
A lot of distortion after mid range of power. Don't know if it's the receiver or the new speakers. Need more power in a Jeep.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver does everything I wanted it to do. My son and I installed this in a 1992 Miata replacing the original radio. (cassette player is now gone). Radio, CD player, USB connection, and aux imput. I found it interesting that this $100 receiver scrolls through a longer song title, while the $1,000 top end sound system in one of my other vehicles does not scroll. The install wasn't very difficult and Cruthfield's instructions were right on.

      Good Stereo; Great sound

Written By Anonymous, Sacramento, CA on Friday, April 13, 2012
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this unit in my 2002 Ford Explorer with Ford Wire Harness and install kit. Install was easy and took about an hour. Navigation on the system was good and intuitive enough for me to figure out on the fly. CD player player and radio have great sound. I also loaded up a bunch of mp3 on a nano USB drive and connected it to the unit with good sound quality. Navigation using the USB is ok, but could be improved with larger screen. For those with an Ipod, then you might want to get a unit that is fully compatible with an Ipod instead of using a USB drive. Overall I'm very satisfied.
      Pros:
Good value and Great sound. Navigation on unit is fine. Upgraded from stock 02' Ford Explorer stereo and it's a definite improvement. Easy Install. Very satisfied.
      Cons:
Navigation on USB drive is somewhat difficult because small screen. It's hard to show artist, album, song on a small screen at once. This unit does the best it can with small display. If USB connectivity is your primary use, then you might think about a double-din stereo instead.

USB interface not quite what I wanted

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you want to search for and listen to a certain artist or particular song on a USB stick, forget about it. When scrolling through music on a USB stick, it displays the folder and file number instead of anything useful. You can change what "tag" is displayed, but there is an unbearable delay before it shows this data.
      Pros:
Big buttons that you can read.
      Cons:
Searching for a particular song or artist on a USB stick is not practical. Reach for the CD. The display of tags from music on a USB device only shows up after a delay.

      Consider upgrading for FM reception

Written By Barry D, Virginia Beach on Wednesday, December 14, 2011
Installed in a 2005 Subaru Legacy
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am not an audiophile, but wanted a receiver with a front aux in, so I can play pandora from my droid phone. Before I went to Crutchfield, I bought one of those FM transmitters - it worked sorta okay - but for any long trips, it was a pain because you have to keep changing stations. I looked at Crutchfield, and chose this Alpine because I didn't need any special features, other than the aux input. My car required fairly extensive work to get it installed, and changing out a number of pieces that Crutchfield supplied, and it fits perfectly. I am returning it within the first 2 days and upgrading to the next one up which is the CDE 121. The CDE100 has very weak FM reception - the stereo light blinked on and off for most stations - the stock radio did much better. When I called Crutchfield, we tried to check the FM sensitivity spec - and it isn't even listed on the 100, even on Alpine's site. The 121 is 9.3, which the salesperson said was quite good. Of course, dealing with Crutchfield is a breeze, but highly suggest you get the next level up if you go with Alpine.
      Pros:
Controls are pretty intuitive, great price
      Cons:
The FM reception was quite poor

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This head unit is great, easy to install simple to use with out all the annoying extras. Cd player, Aux and USB are all you need these days. my only disappointment was the usb would not charge my iphone, i know it says not compaitible but i was still crossing my fingers that it might atleast charge it since its a standard usb. works perfect for thumb drive and the aux you can use anything to play music that has the standrad jack, iphone, ipod, zune, blackberry, even a portable tape player if you really wanted to haha. i recently had a cdplayer installed in a diff vehicle by bestbuy and was not going to pay that much money again. so i decided to just do it myself and im glad i did. it was a piece of cake. i am horrible with electronic wiring and stuff but was still able to figure this out with ease. crutchfield makes it easy with everything you need except you may wanna purchase some wire connectors. worked 1st try, love it

Easy to install. Great sound with my 80 watt amp. Installed in a 1975-911 Porsche. Replaced a Sony radio/tape unit.

      Alpine CDE-100

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Awesome service from Crutchfield as usual, no complaints there. The radio
works and sounds fine, but before you buy you need to understand that this is
about as basic radio as you can get. Sure it has the USB port right in front, and
that's nice of course, but the features and overall quality of the unit are on par
with a stock radio out of an early 1990's Toyota. I had the only slightly more
expensive CDE-102 in another vehicle and the difference is night and day.
Even the plastic used on the CDE-100 looks and feels cheap and you can see
light and dark "swirls" in it like a Chinese toy you'd see in the dollar store.
Again, it sounds fine and I'm going to keep it, but if you're looking for even a
modest upgrade over stock, the ONLY advantages this unit has are the USB
port in the front and the pre-amp outputs in back. Other than that you're better
      off keeping your stock unit.

I have CDE 100 and the 102. Both receivers are what I was looking for. I really
like the aux jack and USB port. The tech support cannot be beat and I will
      definitely purchase again from Crutchfield.

I have no complaints at all, crutchfield got this product to me the day after I
ordered it, (free shipping) and was very happy with the Receiver. Alpine makes
quality units and very simple and to the point, does everything I need and I
really enjoy the USB input. I can put almost all my music on my 4GB thumb drive
i like that option a lot.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this unit mainly for the usb port. I did not want a unit with all the bells and
whistles, just a good unit. Sounds great, alot of features, usb a plus. A minus is the
radio has to be on for clock to show on display, no way to hook up wiring to keep clock
on with unit off. But all-in-all a very nice unit for the price. Easy installation, be sure to get
all the necessary items: face plate panel, wiring connector, antenna lead etc...
Crutchfield is a 5 star company to business with. Great install sheets, support.
      Thanks Crutchfield!

Am very happy with this purchase. Easy to install in my subaru and is a huge improvement
over the factory unit, even though I did not replace the factory speakers.
