Why choose bookshelf speakers?

Bookshelf speakers may be small in size, but they can deliver surprisingly big sound. Some ultra-compact models even fit on a desktop. Most are right at home in tight spaces like shelves, so they're usually good choices for your home theater's rear channels. For the best performance, try placing bookshelf speakers on solid speaker stands to help the sound really "open up." If you want full bass impact, add a powered subwoofer and enjoy punchy sound that's as deeply satisfying as that of floor-standing speakers.

Our take on the Infinity Primus P163

by Kristen Schaub

With Infinity's Primus P163, you get the real deal — rich, detailed sound and a price tag that won't leave your wallet empty. It's all thanks to a combination of Metal Matrix Diaphragm® driver technology and a low-resonance enclosure. You'll hear sparkling high frequencies and detailed midrange from any type of music, at any volume level. And for a compact bookshelf speaker, the bass might just surprise you. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the lifelike vocals and robust instrumentals that this speaker has to offer.

Exclusive Infinity Metal Matrix Diaphragm drivers
The Primus P163 features Infinity's exclusive Metal Matrix Diaphragm ("MMD" for short) driver technology in both the 3/4" tweeter and 6-1/2" woofer. These MMD drivers consist of a stiff aluminum core, anodized on both sides for increased strength and rigidity. The result is extremely fast, extremely accurate response, so you'll hear distinctly cleaner, more realistic sound, even at higher volume levels.

Build a complete Primus® system
The Infinity Primus P163 will fill just about any room with dramatic and well-defined sound. Use a pair to create a high-quality stereo system, or add it to Infinity's P363 floor-standing speaker and PC351 center channel speaker to create a stunning Primus home theater system. And don't forget to add the perfectly matched PS38 powered subwoofer to get deep, accurate bass in the mix.

    Driver Technology

Metal Matrix Diaphragm (M.M.D.): Derived from the C.M.M.D. material used in Infinity's flagship Cascade series, M.M.D. features a stiff aluminum core, anodized on both sides for increased strength and rigidity. M.M.D. transducers conduct sound faster than paper, polypropylene, and Kevlar, pushing unwanted resonances beyond the operating range of the transducer. M.M.D. drivers deliver crystal-clear, distortion-free sound from dynamic digital sources, even at high listening levels.

6-1/2" Woofer: The 6-1/2" M.M.D. cone woofer offers extremely accurate midrange response for cleaner, more realistic sound. For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofer uses rubber surrounds.

3/4" Tweeter: The speaker has a 3/4" M.M.D. dome tweeter that offers superior stiffness and damping compared to traditional metal domes.

Acoustical Waveguide: The P163's tweeter utilizes an acoustical waveguide to deliver, more even high frequency response, no matter what part of the room you're in.

Precision Crossover Network: The speaker features a 2-way crossover system with crossover frequency at 3000Hz. The crossover has a 24dB/octave slope.

Voice-Matched: The P163 is voice-matched to all the speakers in the Primus line, so a complete matching system can be built.

Magnetically Shielded: The Infinity Primus bookshelf loudspeaker is magnetically shielded for safe placement adjacent to your television.

    Enclosure Design

Wood Grain Vinyl Cabinet: The Infinity P163 features a black wood grain vinyl cabinet that matches almost any decor.

Bass Reflex Design: The Infinity Primus bookshelf loudspeaker utilizes a bass reflex enclosure with a front-firing port for greater efficiency and bigger bass response.

Low Resonance Enclosure: The P163 employs a extremely low resonance enclosure, so you hear the music exactly as it was recorded.

Grille: The speaker comes with a removable black cloth grille with a rigid plastic frame.

    Connections

5-Way Binding Posts: The 5-way binding posts will accept bare wire, pin connectors, spade connectors, banana plugs, and dual banana plugs.

Color-Coded: The speaker's binding posts are color-coded (red/black) for easy identification between positive and negative.

    Mounting Options

Rubber Feet: The speakers come with 4 rubber self-adhesive feet for each speaker to help secure them in place to prevent slippage and vibration.

Wall Mounting: The optional PinPoint heavy duty side-grip wall-mounting bracket (121AM40B, sold separately) can be used to wall mount the speakers.

    Primus P163's

Written By Beastn, St Louis, MO on Saturday, May 11, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a 7.2 setup consisting of all Primus speakers. I recently replaced the P163's with the P363's towers as mains. If your game is listening to 2 channel stereo go with the 363's. They're a full range tower and deliver the lower frequencies the P163's cannot. However, if you have a quality sub go with the P163's! You can purchase 4 of these badboys cheaper than a pair of 363's. Pair 4 of these with the PC351 center and a sub and you will have a quality 5.1 setup. I'm currently using the P163's as surrounds and they are great fit in that position as well.

*Note My P363's are not broken in yet so I may hear a distinct improvement in the future over the P163's. However, since I have the 80hz and below frequencies being handled by my subs I doubt that will be the case.

Other info (equipment): Yamaha RX-A810 receiver, Velodyne SPL-1000. Klipsch RW-12, Primus P143's as surround backs.
    Pros:
    Excellent sound for the money
    Cons:
    Not wall mountable.

A nice little speaker to go with my little 2.1 set up (Denon AVR-1913 and Infinity PS38 powered sub. The speakers play the sounds clearly and don't get distorted if I crank up the volume. Picked them up on sale for something like $85 each. Well worth it IMHO.

    Great Speakers

Written By The Classicist, Denver, CO on Sunday, April 14, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great speakers at a great price. As a classical music fan, I was looking for speakers with clarity and detail, and these really exceeded my expectations. A real upgrade in sound at a very reasonable price.
    Pros:
Great sound at a great price. You can spend far more but for a modest sound system these are can't miss speakers.
    Cons:
Bigger than I expected for a bookshelf speaker.

    Primus P163 Bookshelf speakers

Written By Kathy S, Milwaukee, Wi on Wednesday, March 20, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just received my speakers yesterday - I am blown away by the sound these bookshelf size speakers put out. I'm a bass lover so I tested them out with some 70's Santana. I was ECSTATIC to find out they performed almost as well as my tower speakers and I actually had some bass to spare. Sound is clean and full. I would recommend these speakers to anyone wanting big speaker quality in a smaller, lighter package.
    Pros:
Full sound with more than adequate bass. Not "tinny" sounding like a lot of bookshelf speakers I've heard.
    Cons:
Pretty tall for a "bookshelf". I have them on matching wooden plant stands that I was going to give away - glad I didn't

Written By Dave/the painter., Lafayette, CO. on Tuesday, January 15, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Initially these were very bright and, for me, can dominate a bit instead of fitting in. However, over time I found they mellow out and soon take their place providing beautiful music or wonderful dialogue, sound or effects when watching movies. I look forward to many years of enjoyment with these cabinets.
    Pros:
Nice price for the quality of speaker system involved.

    None so far.

    Great bang for the buck

Written By Mike, Dallas, TX on Wednesday, December 12, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got these on sale for $172 for the pair delivered. I had bought the matching center channel speaker several months ago and it was time to replace the aging bookshelf speakers with 12" woofers. I was concerned about loosing those big woofers, but with a sub woofer it's not a problem. Tighter, brighter sound than the old speakers. Some people complain that these are overly bright, especially at high volumes. I'm older and have experienced some high end hearing loss, so the extra hi end is welcome. For others, it's a simple matter to attenuate the hi's, but you can't manufacture them if they are not there to begin with.
    Pros:
Good clear sound and plenty of it (93dB sensitivity). Are they an audiofiles dream? No, But they sound WAY better than you would expect at this price. Infiniti makes a great bang for the buck speaker.

I have these speakers paired with 2 Polk subs driven by a Yamana integrated amp. They sound fantastic! Big, clear, accurate sound from such a small speaker. Definitely a best buy.

    still breaking in

Written By Jon, Zephyrhills,FL. on Thursday, October 11, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First, this is for those that seem to have no clue as to the RED and BLACK cap plugs in the binding posts are removable. All you need is a small jewelers screwdriver or a small pocket knife to pry between the cap and binding post edge. Then you can insert your banana plugs. DUH!!. Anyway, my wife and I are impressed thus far on the tonal quality and play back response. A tad brighter than Polks but these will mellow in about 40 to 50 hours. We really like these Infinitys.
    Pros:
    Midrange and lows are excellent
    Cons:
a tad bright but will soften with time.

Great speaker, poor binding post plate option!

Written By Ernie Mink, Thornton, Colorado on Tuesday, October 09, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love the Infinity Primus speajer lineup, but the worst decision they EVER made was to go to this horrific binding post plate with color plastic caps, preventing the consumer from using a banana plug in the standard, preferred conventional way by pushing it snugly into the center hole on the all metal post. Plastic is NOT a good idea in any connection, and is cheap to begin with. So I took my Primus speakers and had the connection binding post plates switched out by an authorized speaker Infinity dealer, since they also appear to use machine rivet inserts to attach the plates instead of the standard preferred screws, which is also a unwelcomed proprietary decision I hate. I read the Inifnity forums and other technical home theater forums all the time, and there are literally hundreds of people who HATE these new binding posts on the Infinity Primus speakers. Other than that, they are fiver star speakers with incredible crisp clear sound. So five stars for sound, but I had to reduce the overall raing to 4 stars because the plates on the back are horrible!
    Pros:
    Excellent sound and design
    Cons:
Infinity binding post plates are a horrible design! They need to go!

    Great Value

Written By Joshua J, Minneapolis, MN on Friday, September 28, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Growing up listening to movies and music through my JBL Soundgear 3030, I have always held Harmon International products in high regard. When it came time for me to finally assemble my own home theater system, I was expecting no less from these Infinity speakers. I've created a system of 4 P363's towers, 2 P163's bookshelfs, a C351 center, and a PS312 sub, all powered by a Harmon/Kardon AVR3650. Being a bargain hunter, I waited for these to go on "sale" to obtain the best price (well this side Black Friday sales prices).

I have had the speakers hooked up for about two months now, and all I can say is WOW! The sound reproduction and tonal quality is incredible. Everyone has their own opinions on what sounds good, but ultimately the quality of the sound comes down to the quality of the receiver and the quality of the speaker components. I've utilized various mediums ranging from music, movies and video games, and in each medium, even with works I know quite well, comes alive- whether connected via HDMI, fiber optic or composite. There are qualities to the sound that I did not know existed- that is how incredibly clear the sound is. I would definitely recommend these speakers to someone looking to obtain the best sound for the price, while still having a high quality product.
