About the Samsung HL-P4663W

Steve Kindig
Samsung took the early lead in bringing DLP™ (Digital Light Processing) technology to big-screen TVs. The HL-P4663W is part of their newest 3rd-generation DLP lineup, and Samsung has improved picture quality while further reducing cabinet depth and weight. The TV's 46" widescreen viewing area is elegantly framed by a thin black bezel that adds extra pop to images.

By combining one of Texas Instruments' latest, most advanced DLP chips with Samsung's Cinema Smooth™ Gen 3 "light engine," the HL-P4663W creates bright, filmlike images with deeper blacks, more robust colors, and a smoother look overall. World-famous Carl Zeiss optics ensure a picture that is always sharp and detailed.

With a single image chip replacing the three picture tubes of conventional big-screens, the picture can't drift out of focus (and require adjusting). Images have pixel-perfect clarity right out of the box and they'll stay that way! DLP is also immune to screen burn-in from playing video games, or viewing 4:3 TV shows with "side pillars."

The HL-P4663W has one of the most flexible, future-ready "jack packs" we've seen. The seven A/V inputs include two HD-compatible component video inputs, plus two pure digital inputs — DVI and HDMI — that will provide the most spectacular picture possible. (HDTV reception requires connecting a separate HDTV tuner.)

A built-in "scaler" automatically converts all incoming signals to the DLP chip's native 1280 x 720 (720p) resolution. Samsung's proprietary DNIe™ circuitry enhances detail and color, and applies digital noise reduction to clean up lower-quality signals.

Consumer Alert: This component has only an analog broadcast tuner and will require a converter box after February 17, 2009, to receive over-the-air broadcasts with an antenna because of the Nation's transition to digital broadcasting. Analog-only TVs should continue to work as before with cable and satellite TV services, gaming consoles, VCRs, DVD players, and similar products. Features

DLP Projection System: DLP (Digital Light Processing) technology by Texas Instruments is the only display solution that enables projection systems to create a purely digital connection between a digital video or graphic source and the screen in front of you. While all other technologies are analog and compromise some image quality in translation, DLP projection unleashes the full potential of high-quality video content.

3rd Generation DMD Chip: The 3rd Generation DMD chip, Texas Instruments' latest micro-display panel, offers the latest performance enhancement. Combined with Samsung's advanced light processing optics (Cinema Smooth Gen 3 Light Engine), the result is an overall stunning picture quality that is clear, bright and with outstanding contrast.

HD Ultra-Fine Pitch Screen: Samsung's HD Ultra-Fine Pitch Screen further improves picture clarity especially when viewing higher definition video sources like DVD and HDTV.

Automatic Digital Format Conversion System: The Automatic Digital Format Conversion System is compatible with 1080i and 720P HDTV formats, 480P EDTV and 480i SDTV formats. The system will accept any DTV, Analog TV, or XGA computer RGB input. All video signals are converted to a 16:9 widescreen (1280 x 720 resolution) progressive display for flicker-free images.

Faroudja DCDi De-interlacing with 3-2 Pulldown Processing: When converting film-based 480i material to a progressive video image, the new motion adaptive deinterlacing prevents the introduction of motion artifacts and jagged edges. The result is a sharper, noise-free picture with finer details. Note: This feature is by-passed on 480p, 720p and 1080i inputs.

10-bit 3D Digital Comb Filter: The 10-bit 3D digital comb filter constantly analyzes the three dimensions of picture height, picture width, and picture changes-over-time, to dramatically reduce edge image artifacts while improving transition detail.

Digital Natural Image Engine (DNIe): This exclusive Samsung technology dramatically improves picture quality by enhancing the contrast, detail, and white balance, while also reducing the noise.

Digital Noise Reduction: If the broadcast signal received by your TV is weak, you can activate the Digital Noise Reduction feature to help reduce any static and ghosting that may appear on the screen.

Picture Modes: You can choose one of the following picture modes:

  • Standard: resets the standard factory settings
  • Dynamic: for viewing the TV during the day, or when there is bright light in the room
  • Cinema: for viewing the TV in low light, or when playing video games
  • Custom: allows you to adjust and store the following settings: contrast, brightness, sharpness, color and tint

MCC (My Color Control) Mode: The MCC Mode lets you select predefined settings that affect the skin, sky, and grass tones in a picture without affecting other colors on the screen. You can choose one of the following settings: Standard, Turkish Blue, Emerald Green, Indian Pink, or Custom. The Custom setting allows you to independently adjust the skin, sky, and grass tones.

Screen Sizes: You can choose one of the following screen sizes:

  • Wide: sets the picture to 16:9 wide mode

  • Panorama: use this mode for the wide aspect ratio of a panoramic picture

  • Zoom 1: magnifies the size of the picture and allows you to move the enlarged picture using the joystick on the remote

  • Zoom 2: magnifies the size of the picture more than Zoom 1 and allows you to move the enlarged picture using the joystick on the remote

  • 4:3 Normal: sets the picture to 4:3 normal mode

2-tuner Picture-in-Picture: Two tuners eliminate the need for a second video source for picture-in-picture. You can select standard PIP operation (with a PIP frame size of Large or Small), or one of two split-screen modes. During standard PIP operation, the PIP frame can be moved to any corner on the screen. In both modes, you can alternate sound between the main program and the secondary program. Using the Swap function, you can instantly switch the main program with the secondary program.

Note: The following inputs cannot be used for picture-in-picture: ANT 2, Component 1, Component 2, PC, DVI, or HDMI.

Auto Volume: Auto volume automatically adjusts the volume of the desired channel by lowering the sound output when the modulation signal is high or by raising the sound output when the modulation signal is low.

Sound Settings: You can choose from the following sound settings:

  • Standard: resets the standard factory settings

  • Music: for watching music videos and concerts

  • Movie: for watching movies

  • Speech: for watching a show that is mostly dialogue

  • Custom: allows you to adjust the 5-band EQ, which includes the following frequencies: 100 Hz, 300 Hz, 1 kHz, 3 kHz, and 10 kHz

  • SRS TruSurround XT: TruSurround is a patented SRS technology that solves the problem of playing 5.1 multichannel content over two speakers. TruSurround delivers a compelling, virtual surround sound experience through the two speaker internal playback system.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer switches the television off after a specified amount of time. The sleep timer can be set to 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, or 180 minutes.

On/Off Timer: The On/Off timer allows you to program the television to turn itself on and off by selecting a specific on time and a specific off time. You can also choose the "On Timer Channel" and "On Timer Volume".

PC Display: The PC input allows you to connect a personal computer with a D-Sub 15-pin output, allowing you to use the TV as a high-resolution computer monitor. In PC mode, you can adjust the following picture quality settings: Coarse and Fine, both of which allow you to remove picture noise. In addition, you can choose one of the following screen sizes:

  • Wide (TV): scales the picture to the size of the TV screen regardless of the aspect ratio of the input source

  • Wide (PC): scales the picture to 92% of the screen regardless of the aspect ratio of the input source

  • Expand: scales the picture to the aspect ratio of the input source

  • Normal: displays the picture as it is without changing the aspect ratio of input source

Remote Control

Multibrand Remote: The supplied remote is pre-programmed to operate this unit and a number of functions on other brands of components, including VCRs, cable boxes, and DVD players. Several controls are located under a sliding lid that covers the bottom quarter of the remote.
