Why install component speakers?

A component speaker system gives you the best possible performance from your car audio system. A system consists of separate woofers, tweeters, and crossovers, each designed to cover one specific range of frequencies. As separate components, the woofer can move freely to deliver more powerful performance, while the tweeter can be custom-mounted in a better spot up closer to your ears, revealing a whole new world of detail. Separate crossovers are far superior to the simple filters wired into full-range speakers, so the components work together for smoother, more focused sound.

Our take on the Infinity Kappa 60.9cs

by Kristen Schaub

Infinity built their Kappa Series speakers with improved technology and high-end materials to provide you with outstanding sound reproduction. The Kappa 60.9cs component speaker system features 6-3/4" woofers with responsive woven glass-fiber cones that won't flex during a hard workout. The Plus One design offers a larger surface area for improved low-frequency output and efficiency, while longer voice coils add a little more punch to the bass. Large magnets keep the woofers running cooler by placing more steel close to the voice coils to act as a heat sink.

Textile dome tweeters
Infinity uses the same textile dome tweeters found in many of their popular home speakers with this Kappa system, so you'll hear the music the way it was recorded with minimal coloration or distortion. The tweeters handle down to 2,500 Hz, almost an octave below the tweeters in many systems, so you'll hear more definition and detail, no matter where you sit. Infinity includes mounting hardware to install the tweeters in custom or factory openings.

Premium crossover networks
The computer-optimized outboard crossover networks employ audiophile-grade components to separate highs and lows, so that the woofer and tweeter work together perfectly. You can attenuate tweeter response by 6 dB to get the perfect sonic balance if you've mounted the tweeters in a less-than-ideal factory location.

Pre-wired crossovers eliminate a time-consuming step in your installation, and terminals at the end of the crossover wires screw directly to the Kappa woofers and tweeters, leaving no chance for incorrect wiring.

Note: Infinity describes this model as a 6-1/2" speaker. Most manufacturers designate this same frame size as a 6-3/4" speaker. For simplicity's sake we list it as a 6-3/4" speaker.

Important Note: You should use an outboard amplifier to power these speakers.

Highlights:

  • 6-3/4" component speaker system includes woofers, tweeters, and crossovers

    Features

Plus One Woofer Cones: The Plus One speakers use cones more surface area than other speakers of the same size. This is accomplished by using a new basket design and hi-roll surround. The Plus One design offers greater bass output and a significant increase in efficiency.

Woven Glass Fiber Woofer Cones: This woven-glass-fiber material is very light and extremely stiff, minimizing cone flex. This results in very low distortion and improved clarity. The woofers have set screw input terminals that will accept up to 10 gauge bare wire.

Woofer Size: This component set is marketed as having 6-1/2" woofers; they will fit in standard 6-1/2" speaker openings, but do not use the standard 6-1/2" speaker bolt pattern. In order to install them in standard 6-1/2" speaker openings you must drill new screw holes. If new holes are drilled in the mounting surface of the car, no bracket need be used. If drilling in the car is not an option, the flange on the included metal bracket is wide enough to accommodate new holes being drilled; either in a standard 6-1/2" three hole pattern or a Ford non-symmetric four hole pattern. When using the bracket the depth becomes 2.279" and the mounting height becomes 0.651".

Edge Driven UHF Dome Tweeters: Each speaker has an Edge-driven UHF dome tweeter. The benefit is increased power handling and reduced distortion at high output. This technology also allows for better integration with the mid/woofer. The tweeter wire terminals are set screws, tightened using the included 1mm Allen wrench; they accept bare wire up to 14 gauge.

High-Output Design: The high output 2-ohm voice coil design compensates for the high in-line resistance of small gauge factory wiring and extracts every watt from factory receivers, increasing overall system output and efficiency (relative to 4 ohm speakers). The speakers also benefit from increased power when you upgrade the wire and add aftermarket amplifiers, designed to power a 2-ohm load.

Crossovers: Kappa speakers include computer-optimized, voice-matched crossovers, using audiophile quality air core inductors and polypropylene capacitors. The crossover slope is 18 dB/octave. Each crossover has a tweeter output switch; choose between flat and -6dB.

Crossover Connections: Each crossover has set screw input and output terminals that will accept up to 10 gauge bare wire.

    Crossover Dimensions:

    • Length: 4-3/4"
    • Width: 3-1/2"
    • Height: 1-3/8"

Tweeter Mounting: The I-Mount tweeter mounting system and Starfish mounting brackets give you several different ways to mount the tweeters:

    • I-Mount Tweeter Mounting System: The tweeters can be surface or flush mounted with Infinity's innovative I-Mount system:
      • Surface Mount: Surface mounting the tweeters involves screwing the surface-mount cup to the mounting location, then inserting and locking the tweeter into the cup.
      • Flush Mount: Flush mounting is made easy through the use of the threaded flush-mount adapter and plastic locking nut. Once a cutout is made, the flush-mount adapter (with the tweeter installed) is inserted into the hole. The large plastic locking nut is threaded onto the adapter (from behind the mounting surface) to hold the complete assembly securely in place. When flush mounted, the tweeters may be angled for optimum response and imaging.
    • Starfish Mounting Brackets: The Starfish mounting brackets allow the tweeters to be installed in factory locations behind the grilles:
      • Surface Mount (behind grille panel): Once the Starfish bracket is trimmed, it is screwed to the mounting surface behind the grille panel. Then, the tweeter is inserted into the bracket and locked into place.
      • Flush Mount (behind grille panel): Once the Starfish bracket is trimmed, it is dropped into the cutout in the mounting surface behind the grille panel. Then, the tweeter is inserted into the bracket and locked into place.
      • Bottom Mount (to grille panel): Once the Starfish bracket is trimmed, it is secured to the underside of the grille panel. The tweeter must be inserted into the bracket and locked into place before the bracket is mounted.
      • Flush Mount (in-dash location): Once the Starfish bracket is trimmed, it is dropped into the cutout in the dash. Then, the tweeter is inserted into the bracket and locked into place.

    Infinity Kappa 60.9cs

Written By greg43@msn.com, Maryland on Monday, September 24, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good sound. The mid range is now alive. I got these because they were 2 ohm and wouldn't reduce volume for the factory sytem and to require less power when I get aroung to installing an amp. Bought for front doors on my Ram 2500. Didn't use crossovers because Alpine system already installed in line. I'm no pro installer, but everything went well with the Scoche 6x9 to 6.5" adapters. I'm not a fan of the seperate speaker terminals. They were in the way and much more difficult to connect than std ones, especially since I had the connectors for the factory ones. Crutchfield says these do not fit front doors only back doors. The only thing I did different from what I've seen others do is place hole for tweeter on Scoche adapters to the bottom instead of top. A very minimal difference which may have help it clear the reinforcement for the windo bracket. I haven't installed to tweeters in the headliners yet. I had already upgraded the dash speakers so I didn't need anymore tweedance up front.
    Pros:
    Sound quality
    Cons:
wire connector blocks may be a better connection, but in my case made installation more difficult.

    High Power Listening

Written By FoxThunder, Lansing, MI on Wednesday, August 22, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Install was a breeze, beware the tweeters are huge, also note Crutchfield has the impedance of this set at 4ohms when they are 2ohms, which is some what of a bonus as they will allow more power from the connected amplifier, I have these connected to a Orion XTR5004 80watts RMS x4 @ 4ohms but with the 2ohm it's 125watt RMS, so with that being said I have to adjust their level down a bit about -4 to -5 to balance them out with the rears, these comp where installed in a 02 Oldsmobile Bravada, so I had to custom mount the tweeters, so use a Hole Saw slightly bigger than 2 - 1/8, a nice feature with the tweeters is the ability to point them where you want for better sound imaging, now the sound of the tweeters are between what a aluminum like tweet and a silk dome tweet would sound like not to soft not to sharp, My Head Unit is a Pioneer DEH-80PRS I pretty much can get what I want out of the tweeters if I want them soft or sharp the option is their, the mid woofer is OK, the Bravada's doors are pretty well sound deadened and the mid's are just OK not great, a bit soft at low to moderate listening levels, but at higher listening levels you think you had a different set of speakers, I have these X-over at 100hz /12db, using a DD1 to make sure their is absolutely no distortion from head unit and amplifier this comp set shines at about 3/4 volume they just come alive from their any higher and your asking for some hearing loss :) I am happy with the Infinity Kappa 60.9cs.
    Pros:
Tweeters can be made quieter or louder with a push of a button, tweeters can be adjusted in many ways even once installed, this component set has a impedance of 2ohm not 4, so they make better use of a amplifiers power, with a good Amplifier and Head Unit these components get to jump'n, Crossovers are not too big and are nice to look at so can install inside your vehicle.
    Cons:
Tweets are huge need to cut a big hole in door, wiring tweets was a real pain the allen wrench & screws are way to tiny, striped one screw on one of the tweets had to drill out to wire :( components are rated at 2ohms not the 4 that is listed, so your going to have to adjust them down either buy amplifier gain or though Head Unit to balance out the sound stage, woofers mid bass is a bit soft at low to mid levels of volume, at mid high to high levels they simply just rock plenty of every thing.

Brought a pair of these speakers for a 2005 Misubishi Galant GTS WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. I love detail in music and these speakers are the very best i'v heard the highs that the sparate tweeter produced felt like i could shatter my car windows. The same tweeter also produced incredable mid rang detail as well i have no problems with these speakers what so ever. have resently brought another car 2010 Nissan Maxima with a Bose stereo system that sounds great but i'm still going to change out the speakes for two pairs of these infinity speakers cant wait to hear them in my new car.
    Pros:
better detail in sound highs mids and lows
    Cons:
    none

    Cons:
Very large crossover networks, small Allen wrench strips or breaks.

    I love my car again

Written By Friction Jack, Southern Oregon on Wednesday, May 23, 2012

My 1998 Neon has a lot of road noise. It has always been a challenge to overcome it (even with Dynamat) yet these speakers are so clear, the road noise literally falls behind it and I can't hear it anymore. Upgrading to these speakers actually upgraded my whole car.

I had a set of new Alpine SPS-610 up front, and after suffering with them for 3 months, one died and I new I wanted something better. The Infinity Kappas were a great choice. They deliver the full range of music with clarity - way beyond my volume tolerance. They are powered by an Infinity Kappa Five, along with a set of 6x9 Alpines in the rear. The Infinity Kappas make the Alpines sound like there's a pillow on them. Upgrading those next.

For first generation Dodge/Plymouth Neon owners: The giant tweeters (with the cup that allows you to aim them) slipped right into the factory location. Couldn't have been easier. In fact I had a harder time finding a home for the crossovers. Woofers needed extra 1/2" spacing to clear the windows.
    Pros:
    Clarity, quality of build, materials.
    Cons:
The tweeters' speaker wire set screws are too tiny. The allen wrench is so tiny and thin that it's fragile, yet there is room for a much larger head on the set screw. The contact between the screw and wrench is so fragile that you simply can't torque the tiny screw enough to create a trustworthy connection. I snapped one end of the wrench opening the screw (the factory has them in there TIGHT!) and stripped the other end tightening them down.

I got these as a Christmas present from my parents. I had done some research and have always loved Infinity products, so I knew I wanted these. They did not let down at all! Very crisp clean highs from the tweeters, and the woofers handle a pretty good amount of bass. The only issue I had with these was installation, but not because of the product, it was my car. The tweeters are a bit of a pain to install in an 08 Civic. Other than that, no complaints. I love these!
    Pros:
    Good bass, Clean crisp highs.

    NONE

    Kappa Component

Written By The One, Houston TX on Friday, January 27, 2012

I just had New Kappa Component installed into my 2011 Tundra I went into Car Toys just wanting to get my amps put on my factory system and was not expecting to by any speakers, but the sales clerk insisted that I at least consider replacing the speakers, so I listened to a couple of different sets and said screw it give me a pair of course we all know what comes next the up grade sell and I stood around for the next comparison demo "people the days" is what went through my head he told my that my truck came with six speakers and I would need a component set for it to "sound proper" I was getting annoyed so I gave him a number that I was willing to spend and told him just make it sound good... So he said my truck deserved these and I should spend the extra "$240.00 a set out his dam mind" so I told him to find something... Well I returned the next day to pick up my truck to find the best sounding truck I have ever heard and could not beleive the clarity, it went perfect with my bass... Well along comes the bill it was FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS over what I told him I was willing to spend and was ready to tell him to remove the when he brought out the adjusted price "Manager hook up" which was $25 less then I was willing to spend.. He said he owns a Tundra and he replaced his old series with the new ones and was awed how great they sounded so he said the hook up wasn't for me like he told me at the start "MY TRUCK DESERVED THEM" Lol boy was he right SO ALL IN ALL SPEND THE MONEY
    Pros:
Greatest Sound I've ever heard and the sound travel's with stock system I didn't have to replace my factory radio to get better sound major plus...
    Cons:
I have non but from all the reviews I've read installing them can be a challenge so if you're not good with things like that have a pro do it find a place where u buy them they will install them like Best Buy I have non but from all the reviews

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are great sounding speakers, and they are worth the purchase.
    Pros:
The sound great, and fairly easy to install.
    Cons:
With my Eclipse I have a factory amp, and you have to install an after market amp to use the cross over correctly. The price is also a little high on these as well, and gets expensive to replacy the factory speakers.

    Infinity Kappa Component System

Written By Robert, Lee's Summit, MO on Thursday, January 26, 2012
    Installed in a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Speakers sound very good and were easy to install. The only problem I had with the install was the "cheesy" little Allen Wrench that was sent out for the speaker hook-ups on the Tweeters. The Allen Wrench is of poor quality and will not fit the lugs on the Tweeters! Normally this would not be a problem, but the lugs are so small you would have to have the equivalent to a Precission set of Allens to fit it!
    Pros:
Very good sound reproduction with nice crisp and clear sound throughout the decibel range. Very good for the price!
    Cons:
Poor quality hook-ups on the tweeters (too small).

Installed in a 1995 Pontiac Firebird
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

At first I was not happy at all with these speakers. I purchased three sets and hooked then up front mid and back of my 1995 Pontiac trans am with three kenwood 350w amps pushing it. Speakers sounded very weak with no mid or bass. Just last night I got the time to set up the filters and sensitivitys correctly. Made a world of difference, speakers are lively and sound great. Capable of all ranges, even some decent bump when hooked up as a sub. I love my infinities now.
    Pros:
    Great sound, versatile.
    Cons:
Pricey if you want to redo all your speakers.

    Clean Crisp Sound

Written By MichaelB, Rowlett, TX on Thursday, September 08, 2011

I installed these speakers in the front doors of my 2001 Yukon with very little modifications. Combined with a pr. of Kappa 62.9i in the rear doors and a Polk Audio db840DVC subwoofer mounted in the factory sub box, this combination sounds incredible. I did set the Kappa's at the -2db setting but they are still very clean and crisp. You can truly appreciate your music when you can hear and distinguish each instrument. The subwoofer has plenty of bass without rattling the vehicle but I do recommend removing the factory carpet jute from the sub box and adding 4-6 oz of polyfil. You will be very happy with this combination.

    Infinity Speakers Will NOT disappoint

Written By Zane, Mattoon, IL on Tuesday, August 02, 2011

There is a reason why Infinity is known for their loud speakers; especially the Kappa Series. Just like all other Infinity products, these are amazing. I am currentyl running them off my Infinity Kappa Four amp.

Pros: Stunning clarity. Loud AND clear. Good bass (unlike others say) and crisp highs. Looks great. Installation accessories.

Cons: Gotta be honest, the magnet and tweeters are rather large, so make sure you have room. I did not, but I wanted them so bad that I made modifications anyway.

    No good with amp power

Written By Matt K, Albuquerque, NM on Wednesday, July 27, 2011

I hooked these up for front stage in conjuction with a matching set of Kappa 62.9i 2-ways for rear fill to my old school Soundstream Continuum amp, along with an old school round Kicker Solobaric 12" sub in a .90 cubic foot sealed box, and a Kenwood Excelon CD receiver. Everything sounded great at first...but I noticed that the sound was out of balance, and discovered one of the mid-bass speakers in my components was completely dead after only 1 1/2 month!

I sent it back in for a replacement, and ran a pair of cheap Pioneer speakers in place of the Kappa front components in the meantime. I reinstalled the Kappa components again last week (after 6 months with the Pioneers) and found one of the rear Kappa 2-ways was blown too. I replaced it, and had one week of good sound. Now one of the front components is distorting & popping...no good. I switched out amps to be certain it wasn't an amp issue. Checked impedence on all wiring, everything checked out good, except the Kappa 60.9cs mid-bass...blown voice coil.

    Install pain = worth it

Written By Josh, Des Moines, IA on Thursday, April 21, 2011

First - the other reviewers are right about install difficulties. The tweeters
are massive and I doubt they will fit in most factory tweeter pods - they don't
fit in a 2000 Subaru Outback's, that's for sure. I had to cut holes in the door
panels, AND use spacers because there wasn't enough depth behind said panel.
Also had to use an adapter for the woofer due to different bolt pattern (and
needed a spacer there as well, to clear the window glass when it's down). And
yes, the allen key for the tweeter is impossibly tiny. You will feel a deep,
dark sense of despair if you think you've lost it. And there was no good place
for the crossovers (had to put them in the door cargo pockets, heh), although
that's true of most component sets.

In all fairness, Crutchfield did warn me they weren't a fit. They were correct,
there's no way these things would have ever gone in without the modifications I
    made.

If you get them installed though.... wow. There's just no substitute for
Infinity Kappas. I'm hearing new notes in nearly every song I listen to. On one
particularly good recording the saxophone is so clear I swear I can feel the
instrument's reed vibrating. I was skeptical about them moving away from the
CMMD material in the previous Kappas (I loved my old CMMD Kappas and would have
kept them, but they were 5x7's and wouldn't fit in anything but a Ford or Mazda)
but they don't seem to have lost anything.

    Great audio quality

Written By DeltaB, OKC, OK on Saturday, March 05, 2011

2003 Sorento. Replaced factory audio with AVQ-P4300DVD and these Kappa series, and all I can say is the difference is night and day. Reworked the opening of the factory tweeter to insert Kappa tweeter from rear. Very little effort in installation resulted in a very fine sounding rig. I used to work for Altec-Lansing Professional here in OKC, and know what pro audio can and does sound like, and these Kappa's are truly a fine buy. Many, at first, feel the tweeters are too bright, but when properly EQ'ed they are truly linear and reproduce sound with clarity and definition. Properly positioned, they create an incredible soundstage rivaling my home theater. I am well pleased!

    Infinity Kappa 60.9cs

Written By rtw, Salt Lake on Tuesday, February 01, 2011

This is an awesome set of speakers at a reasonable price. Installed them in the jump seat area of a Toyota Tacoma. The high and mids are perfectly clear and separated. The bottom is quite solid, so, with a power amp, I barely notice there is no sub.

    Really Nice

Written By DurangoJoe, Charlotte, NC on Friday, January 28, 2011
Installed in a 2001 Dodge Durango
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced a year old pair of Infinity 6020cs with these 60.9cs speakers in my Dodge Durango. I was not expecting a major upgrade in sound, but since they were newer and the tweeter wasn't going to fit in the stock tweeter location in back, I put these in front and moved the 6020's to the back seat. How wrong was I? These are head and shoulders better. Much more solid and lifelike sounding.

The only con I can think of of these is that the tweeter is a bit on the large side. It probably won't fit in the factory location in most cars that have a factory tweeter location. But perhaps that is part of why they sound so nice. Anyway, if you are considering these vs. cheaper Infinity speakers, I say these are definitely the way to go. you'll notice the difference.

WOW TRULY A SQ QAULITY COMP SET

    Written By RAY.F, SOUTHBRIDGE,MA on Sunday, December 05, 2010

I HAVE BEEN A INFINITY KAPPA COMP USER SINCE 2000. I can say these comp sets are the best I have heard and owned.I have heard everything from boston to jl audio, for the price the sq quality you get at 90wrms is outstanding.I run a alpine pdx-4.150 ( 4 x 150wrms) at norm setting for gain and wow the clairity is just amazing, mid bass in right where it should be very responsive and you feel like your right next to the drum beats that accure, the tweeters are a bit piercy but I think its because I have them mounted in my stock mirror location, which is why they are piercy I think, I plan to move them to my kick panels to solve this problem, but you hear things you wouldn't hear from any other speaker set. The power handling is well over the rated power recommondations ( 90wrms - 270w peak ). I play my highs at 125hz front and 60hz rear and 3/4 volume at 150wrms is definity no problem. So dont hesitate to pick these up, you will not be disappionted unless you hooked them up wrong then its your bad. I hope this help people to buy this product without hesitation. No I dont work for an infinity dealer or company, just and average guy buying good quality product from a quality company
