Polk Audio

Why install component speakers?

A component speaker system gives you the best possible performance from your car audio system. A system consists of separate woofers, tweeters, and crossovers, each designed to cover one specific range of frequencies. As separate components, the woofer can move freely to deliver more powerful performance, while the tweeter can be custom-mounted in a better spot up closer to your ears, revealing a whole new world of detail. Separate crossovers are far superior to the simple filters wired into full-range speakers, so the components work together for smoother, more focused sound.

Our take on the Polk Audio MMC6500

by Ken Nail

Powerfully deep bass and crisp, soaring highs; that's the dynamic combination you're looking for from a serious component system. Look no further! The MMC6500, brought to you by Polk/MOMO, meets your auditory expectations, while maintaining a sleek formula-car racing look.

Revel in the distinct low mids and penetrating bass produced by the woven carbon fiber woofers, and bask in the detailed upper mids and highs delivered by liquid-cooled silk/polymer composite dome tweeters. The tweeter's neodymium magnet saves precious space without compromising sound quality — and you can swivel the tweeter up to 15° for exceptional imaging.

The woofer's cast aluminum basket eliminates disturbing resonance. Durable rubber surrounds keep your system rockin' for years to come. And you don't have to limit these speaker systems to your car — they've passed tough environmental testing that certifies them for marine use as well.

    Specifications Note

    Woofers

Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Marine Certified Woofers: Polk/MOMO Series speakers are built to withstand exposure to moisture and UV rays, so they work well in boats and cars.

Lacquered Carbon-fiber Woofers: The lacquered carbon-fiber cones provide the ideal balance of stiffness and low mass for the clearest, most detailed midrange performance, and lowest distortion, of any speaker in its class.

Rubber Surrounds: The airtight rubber surrounds stand up to moisture, sunlight and extreme temperatures while allowing long excursion linear motion and years of reliable use.

Cast Aluminum Baskets: Each speaker has a channel-vented, acoustically inert cast aluminum basket for superior stiffness and better heat dissipation.

1" Kapton Voice Coils and Formers: Laser-based, Klippel-optimized, channel-vented 2-Layer 1" Kapton voice coils and formers offer high heat dissipation and extreme power handling.

NOMEX Spiders: The strong, fire-retardant flat NOMEX spiders allow extended linear motion while providing highly reliable mechanical and thermal stability.

ABS Magnet Boots: Each woofer features a waterproof, anti-resonant ABS magnet boot, which is removable for installation flexibility. With the magnet boots installed, each speaker has the following dimensions:

    • Magnet Diameter: 3.717"
    • Depth as top: 2.672"

ABS Spacer Rings: In many Honda Accords and Civics, the supplied ABS spacer rings can be used to replace the factory mounting cups. Also, the rings can be used to fit the woofers in a variety of import and domestic vehicles that accept 6-1/2" speakers, but have shallow mounting locations; the rings do not have a standard bolt pattern, so you may have to drill new mounting holes to use them in your vehicle. When used with the spacer rings, the woofers have the following dimensions:

    Vehicle Fit:

    • Top Mount Depth (with magnet boot removed): 1.676"
    • Mounting Height: 1.109"
    • Flange Height: 0.951"

    Basket Dimensions:

    • Cutout Diameter: 4.892"
    • Frame Width: 6.296"
    • Frame Length: 6.296"

    Bolt Pattern:

    • Number of Holes: 4
    • Perimeter 1: 3.328"
    • Perimeter 2: 5.348"
    • Diagonal 1: 6.721"
    • Diagonal 2: 6.721"

    Tweeters

Silk/Polymer Composite Tweeters: The 1" liquid-cooled, silk/polymer composite tweeters provide clear, detailed highs.

Marine Certified Tweeters: Polk/MOMO Series speakers are built to withstand exposure to moisture and UV rays, so they work well in boats and cars.

Mounting: The supplied mounting cups allow you to surface- or flush-mount the tweeters. In both mounting configurations, the tweeters can be pivoted to "aim" their output for the best high frequency response and soundstaging.

    Tweeter Mounting Dimensions:

      Surface Mount Flush Mount
    Mounting Height 1.156" 0.246"
    Depth 0.645" (screw depth) 1.107"
    Frame Diameter 2.059" 2.505"
    Cutout Diameter   N/A 2.157"

    Crossovers

    2-way Crossovers: The included crossovers include a 12 dB/octave, 2600 Hz high-pass filter for the tweeters and a 12 dB/octave, 2600 Hz low-pass filter for the woofers.

Bi-amp Inputs: The crossovers allow each woofer and tweeter to be powered by separate channels of amplification. A switch on each crossover lets you choose Single input or Dual input mode. In Single input mode, one channel of amplification is used to power the woofer and tweeter together. In Dual input mode, separate channels of amplification are used to power the woofer and tweeter.

Selectable Tweeter Output Level: Each crossover has a 3-position switch that allows you to select the tweeter output level according to system requirements and personal preference. The switches may be set to "-6 dB", "-3 dB" or "0 dB".

Crossover Mounting: There are 2 mounting holes in the base of each crossover; screws to mount the crossovers are not supplied. The crossovers are not weather proof, so they should not be mounted in locations, such as door panels, that will expose them to direct contact with water.

Crossover Terminals: The crossover terminals are nickel-plated.

    Crossover Dimensions: L=6.031", W=3.614", H=1.466"

    Specifications Note

ABS Magnet Boots: Each woofer features a waterproof, anti-resonant ABS magnet boot, which is removable for installation flexibility. With the magnet boots installed, each speaker has the following dimensions:

    • Magnet Diameter: 3.717"
    • Depth as top: 2.672"

    mmc6500

Written By Nick, Biloxi, MS on Friday, November 07, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased these speakers in early October this year, it is now early November. For about three weeks i had these running of off the head unit. I finally put an amp on them about a week ago pushing no more than 50 wrms to each side. Sounded great for about 4 days, got VERY loud for 50 wrms. Bass was weak though. On the forth day on an amp my right tweeter blew. On the fifth day my left tweeter and woofer blew. I was shocked. I don't believe these are bad speakers, read the reviews on this site and polks, you will see they can't be less than great speakers. I believe i got a bad set. I would love to give another shot at these, but Crutchfield discontinued them.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had these speakers for about a month now and I love them so far.
Easily the best sounding speakers I have ever owned. I am pushing them
with Pioneer amp running 125 watts each and they will get loud. Very loud.
My only complaint is with the tweeter mounting cup, it is too deep for where
I wanted to mount them. This is my first experience with component sets
though so maybe they are all that way. Other than that these are great
speakers, especially for the price. And as always shopping with Crutchfield
was very easy and I'm sure I'll be back again.

    Pretty Good

Written By Matt, Lebanon, OH on Monday, July 21, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers aren't bad. I know everyone has been saying that they are amazing and everything. Mine are alright. I have them powered by a Rockford Fosgate P450.4 pushing 98 watts rms. These are in the rear deck of my 98 Acura CL, with a set of MMC 5250's in the front doors. These speakers are great if you don't plan on using much bass. If you're looking for bass output, get a sub, as I plan on doing, once I get the money saved up. If you're looking for good clean crisp musicality, you're in the right place. If you listen to rap, look elsewhere. If you like any kind of rock, from Blink-182 to Killswitch Engage, these are awesome. I can't crank my Alpine 9884 above 20 (it goes to 35) before I want to run away crying because it's so loud. Overall, I think I was let down by the lack of bass response from these and therefore I only rated them a 4, even though they are much better than anything I've heard.

Installed in a 2007 Toyota Tundra
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered these component speakers and the matching MMC 650 coaxials for my 2007 Tundra. I had no problems at all getting them to fit. The sound is much better than the Polk db component set and the marginal price difference makes the choice a no brainer. The install instructions were spot on for my truck and made the install much smoother. The only complaint is the speaker mount both supplied by Crutchfield and inside the speaker box were cheap plastic, and I would recommend making your own out of 3/4" MDF as they will be much sturdier. I have these and the coaxials running off a Alpine MRP-F300 and they sound great.

    Installed in a 2005 Toyota MR2 Spyder

Excellent sound quality and pressure level, particular for Jazz and Classical
music. Very good build quality. Three-stage tweeter adjustment is very
useful. Product does NOT include the crossover adjustment switch that is
specified by the manufacturer. Tweeter installation required time-
consuming experimentation, but worked out acceptably in the end with
parts provided by Polk. Each crossover is the size of a half-depth brick,
requiring creative mounting solutions. Crutchfield installation instructions
and parts were of no use for installing this product in my car. However,
sale price and support made the purchase from Crutchfield worthwhile.

    Great sound, great price

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

    If you can't handle the
    "shrillness" of the
    tweeters, adjust the
    "Tweeter output
    level" to -3db or
    -6db and that'll
    take some of the
    shrillness out. I
    will admit, I'm not
    a fan of peircing
    highs, and the
    momo's, when not
    broken in, are very
    shrill for Silk
    tweeters, however, I
    have mine adjusted
    to -6db and after
    about a year of
    cranking on the
    volume, I think I
    can adjust the level
    to -3db. Now these
    do take several
    months of "PROPER"
    break-in. So be
    patient and amp them
    properly, they are
    very power hungry, I
    have mine being
    pushed at 148 watts
    RMS and they handle
    it beautifully. Also it helps
    to have them
    completely
    surrounded by
    Dynamat or some
    other dampening
    material, they will
    resonate the heck
    out of your door if
    you don't have that.
    After listening to
    these speakers, It
    is so hard to listen
    to stock speakers!!
    Stock speakers are
    weak and sound
    shallow!

    So overall, amp them
    properly, tune the
    amp properly, have
    dampening material,
    adjust for
    shrillness, break in
    properly and you
    will love the
    speakers for a very
    long time!

These blow away speakers costing 3x as much!!!

Written By David, Denver, CO on Wednesday, February 27, 2008

I have been searching for a set of high-end components for my project car. I narrowed my choices down to three other brands.

All of these components sounded great, but they ranged from $400-800 per set. My buddy recommended that I listen to the MOMO's... and I took his advice.

Utterly amazing!!!! They sound good.... except that the Momos can be found for a lot cheaper!!!

To put the sound quality in perspective... I have a set of the mmc650's (the coaxial version of these components) running next to a set of JL VR650csi components in my Honda Del Sol. They are being fed 150watts RMS by a JL 450/4 amplifier. Keep
in mind, that Polk only rates them to handle 85watts RMS... but they take 150watts RMS like a champ, with no clipping whatsoever! Anyway, the Momo coaxials blow away the JL Vr650csi components. More bass, more defined vocals, smoother highs, better power handling, and more volume before distortion. Keep in mind, that this is the coaxial version of these Momos blowing away the JL components... not even these Momo components!

The build quality is phenomenal... carbon kevlar cones, silk tweeters, and beefy cast aluminum baskets. The grills are the cheapest part... but who cares? The grills don't get used in 98% of all installations.

    Bottom line...
Polk way outdid themselves with the Momo Series. Unbelievable sound quality and power handling... that hangs with most of the top brands $750 retail components. As awesome as these Momos are... the Polk SR6500's must sound great when you listen to them. I really don't hear that much room for improvement from these Momos.

    Hurts my ears

Written By Eugene, Baltimore, MD on Wednesday, February 20, 2008

Paul from Oakland, CA got it exactly right. I thank him for confirming my own thoughts. These speakers have a jarring, shrill sound, which I'm also discovering, much to my surprise (since everyone seems to be praising them). There is no softness or warmth to them. The highs are very sharp and hurt my ears, the bass is too rough.

    Polk rocks hard!

Written By ascalon, San Diego, CA on Friday, February 08, 2008

Wow! Just WOW! I owned a pair of MB Quart RVF216 coaxial/component speakers before these, and they aren't nearly as well made, durable, and loud as my new Momos! I heard Quart was a great brand (formerly at least), but had higher hopes for the Polk's before I listened to either. The Quarts performed well after some break in time, and A LOT of tuning, because they do not tolerate lower bass well at all. The Momos on the other hand, haven't flinched at all with the crazy volumes I've thrown at them, even before break in! The Momos are sick sick quality, at a great price! They blow those MB Quart speakers right out of the water! Though the Quarts have a power rating higher than the Polk's, I don't think they can even take as much power without distortion. If you want a kickin' set of components that can compete with anything, look no further than these. Wish I had 2 sets instead of one!

    You need a quality amp!

Written By Brandon, Ruston, LA on Saturday, February 02, 2008

I have 2 of these component sets powered by an Alpine MRP-F550 and a 5 1/4" set powered by an Alpine MRP-F250 with an additional pair of db1001 tweeters. After the two week break-in, I slam these things from metal to blues. I owned only Alpine speaker before these, and have I been depriving myself. I just wish Polk sold Momo 4" and tweeters. I need something to fill the spaces next to the heat vents on the dash!

    I must be alone here

Written By Paul, Oakland, CA on Friday, February 01, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed these in my VW passat with 75 watt/channel for both front and rears with the woofers in the door panels and the tweeters in the door sails. I've been listening to these for the last 2 weeks to break them in with about 2 hours of daily driving. Unless a longer break-in period is required, these are probably the worst speakers I have ever listened to. The highs sound like glass breaking in your ears, the mids sound like they are muffled behind construction paper and the lows are non-existent. These are about 10 times worse than my factory speakers. I have to turn the volume way up to hear any vocals and mid range but then the highs are so piercing that it's gving me serious hearing damage. I have to turn my bass tones to around +6 to get any bass, but then it starts to muddy the mids a bit too much. If these begin to mellow out after a few more weeks, I'll update this review, but so far it's been a painful experience.

These babies are rocking my BOAT!

Written By Ken, California on Wednesday, August 22, 2007

Kudos to Polk for a great sounding product that's also marine rated. The other marine products I've been able to find in stores and listen to didn't impress me. (Neither do most of the 6.5" non-marine speakers). These sound absolutely awesome by A/B comparison to virtually every other 6.5" speaker I could find to test.

    I am running a full Polk MOMO system - 2 pairs of these 6.5 components (6500s) powered by a C400.4 amp, 2 10" 2104 subs powered by a C500.1 mono class D sub amp.

I did have 1 thermal shutdown on the amp after driving it to the edge of distortion for about 2 hours. We'll see if a small DC fan blowing air over the amps can resolve that on future trips.

Overall - a killer system from Polk - if you are a boater and a music fan, you owe it to yourself to go hear these somewhere and compare. the component speakers sounded MUCH better than the coaxials, even the Polk MOMO coaxials, running from the same amp in a true A/B switching test.

    Accurate, Warm, and Full Sound

Written By Paul, West Chester, PA on Wednesday, July 18, 2007

After many hours(days) of research, I picked these to live up to my expectations. I wanted more of a sound quality rig instead of blow your ears out SPL system. I stuck this component set in my GMC Sierra Ext. cab truck, knowing that the install would be a tight fit and require some metal cutting behind the door panel. The audio comes from a Sony CDX-GT81UW receiver to a Sony XM-1252GTR Amp under the driver seat to the included crossovers.
I’ve heard many speakers, and these sound Amazing! They provide a very nice warm, tight, crisp, yet surprisingly full sound. They sound very good at lower volumes, as well as db’s exceeding any comfortable listening level. I bought these speakers so I would have true sound reproduction, and within the speaker’s range, they give impressive detail and accuracy. The 6.5” drivers produce quality midbass, although there is a definite cut off to their quality in the lower frequencies, probably around 100-125Hz. I’ve had people ask where I hid my subwoofer, replying that I have none as their mouths drop… Word of caution tho: The highs can be very harsh! I too was not happy with silk tweeters being so piercing, with the crossovers not providing enough attenuation, if much at all. I find myself putting the low pass filter on the amp to take out the highs, using just the 6.5” woofers and the Sony XPLOD XS-W2624 4x6” 2 ways powered by the head unit in the dash and rear pillar. Also, don’t jip these nice woofers with a cheap amp! I am very critical of audio reproduction, but don’t get me wrong, these speakers are by far the best component speakers in their price range.

Well i have had these component speakers for a few weeks now in a pair of custom kickpanels i fabricated for my 1997 nissan altima (a beater with kickpanels..) and i can not stress enough how important it is to get a good amp to power them. Ok now for the speakers. I have a Pioneer 6900UB h/u which allows me to set the EQ perfectly. These speakers GET LOUD....im a 17 year old and when 17 year olds say a system is loud....its loud...even with the freakin profile amp which is OVERRATED! once the alpine amp comes in im hoping to see improvement in midbass and SQ (if thats even possible). Oh and if anyone complains about the poor quality of these speakers not that i have seen any complaints on any websites just make sure that you dont run these off your aftermarket 25*4 RMS headunits. Thses speakers need power. like i said even a profile 100*2 makes them really loud. An alpine 70*2 would make it just as loud but definatly better SQ. I will post an update on how much of a difference the amp will make. i know its gonna be big though. O ya and most importantly. THESE SPEAKERS NEED TO BREAK IN BEFORE THEY JAM. i first got them and was convinced that something was wrong with my speakers. they sounded so empty and were easily distorting. i now know that the breakin period is a must. i just left my speakers running while workin on the kicks. NOW I JAM.

Decently Good, But From The Reviews Expected More

From what I read on the reviews I expected it to be the absolute greatest system in the world. Dont get it wrong it sounds pretty good, but not the mind blowing experience I had braced myself for.

I swapped out some so called 600 watt speakers for these in my '05 S2000, and the difference was truly exceptional! The quality and clarity are amazing and they simply rock!

    Highly recommended!!

    Great Speakers!

These are really great speakers. I purchased a set for the rear of my 2006 GTI and knew I had to install a complete four-channel set.

I've got an Alpine amp driving the cabin speakers and another driving two 10" Infinity's. With my Pioneer HU this system is simply fantastic.

    Highly recommended.

Wow. These speakers are simply amazing. I got them when they were on sale, and they are WORTH IT.

I put them in the factory locations in the front of my 1999 cavalier coupe and they ROCK.

They haven't broken in yet, but already the midbass is pretty impresive. By no means can it keep up with any type of subwoofer, but they can hit those notes quite easily and they give a good punch that blends in well.

The mids are good too, and you can easily hear vocals and guitars quite clearly, and the clarity is simply stunning.

The tweeters...are harsh for silk tweeters. However i have them set -3dB on the crossovers and they work good for me. They are very clear and crisp (crisp being the key here). You can easily quite them down with EQ and -6dB if you need to, but it sounds great at -3dB to me.

I'm giving them 95 watts a piece, and they can easily take much more. Do NOT run these off the headunit at all. It just isn't worth it to buy these speakers and not use an amp.

I've heard the dB components, and there is no comparision. These MOMO's blow them out of the water.

for 269.99 i've heard nothing that can compare. I'd compare them to the Boston Pro60's if anything, and those speakers twice as expensive.

Definately some of the best speaker's I've ever heard, if not the best (even out of this price range) and the nicest pair I've ever owned. They not only sound amazing (they blew my mind the first time I installed them, and even though my car broke down soon after I would find myself sitting in it listening to music for hours at a time just to hear things I'd never heard before.) As a previous reviewer said, I occasionally have to turn the tweeter's to the lowest setting because they can get shrill, but depending on the type of music this can be a plus. I am constantly tweaking my settings every song anyway, so don't judge on that... I am looking to make my system entirely polk/momo... I now have the 6x9s in the rear, and am in the process of installing the plate speakers, all i need is 2 of the 12 inch subs (or maybe just one for now:) and the amps. I have never been happier with a speaker purchase and will turn to polk for all my speaker needs from now on... Highly recommended. And they are marine certified!! I want to get my brother a pair for his boat...

Im easy to please when it comes to speakers. As long as they dont break up or sound crappy. These things when pushed with a VR402 (100w RMS to each speaker) sound AMAZING. Crystal Clear, and loud. I have them in my back panel and the tweeters are in the factory locations in a 1995 4Runner which unfournatley place them behind me over the rear window but even with all of that behind me it fills the whole car with great sound and I am more than happy with them.
