Why install component speakers?

A component speaker system gives you the best possible performance from your car audio system. A system consists of separate woofers, tweeters, and crossovers, each designed to cover one specific range of frequencies. As separate components, the woofer can move freely to deliver more powerful performance, while the tweeter can be custom-mounted in a better spot up closer to your ears, revealing a whole new world of detail. Separate crossovers are far superior to the simple filters wired into full-range speakers, so the components work together for smoother, more focused sound.

Our take on the Kenwood KFC-P709PS

by Buck Pomerantz

Kenwood's Performance Series speakers deliver the full range of your music with accuracy and warmth. The KFC-P709PS component speaker system includes two 6-3/4" woofers and two 1" dome tweeters, along with in-line crossover networks that simplify installation.

Woofer construction
Each woofer cone features a Diamond Array pattern that increases the strength of its surface, improving bass response as well as reducing internal vibrations and other distortions. The cone's rubber surround resists weathering and provides reliable support that keeps your music playing, no matter what. The woofers will fit in 6-3/4" and 6-1/2" factory speaker openings.

Separate tweeter for superior sound
The 1" soft dome tweeter mounts in a separate location closer to your ears, so it can broadcast the high-frequency details more effectively. The in-line crossover network routes the correct frequencies to the woofer and tweeter, so you hear clean, balanced sound.

Highlights:

  • package includes two 6-3/4" woofers and two tweeters

    Woofers

Woofers: The 6-3/4" woofer cones are textured Polypropylene and use rubber surrounds for added durability and bass response. The woofer basket is designed to fit a standard 4-hole 6-3/4" application. The included adapter rings expand the woofers' compatibility to include the 3-hole 6-3/4" pattern used by GM and Chrysler, the standard 3-hole 6-1/2" pattern, and Ford's 4-hole 6-1/2" pattern. Please check the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to confirm compatibility with your vehicle.

    Tweeters

Soft Dome Tweeters: The 1" soft dome tweeters offer smooth highs and low distortion.

Tweeter Mounting Options: The tweeters can be flush mounted using the supplied housings and metal retaining-clips. Once installed the tweeters can pivot in the housing, so their angle can be adjusted to obtain a better soundstage. The tweeters can also be top or bottom mounted in a factory tweeter location using the included brackets. The tweeters cannot pivot when installed in the OEM brackets. Once mounted in the appropriate housing, the tweeters have these dimensions:

Flush Mount Factory Top Mount (remove bottom mount flanges) Factory Bottom Mount (remove top mount flanges)
Mounting Depth 1.233" mounting screw depth 0.993"
    Mounting Height 0.668" 0.913" 0"

These things are loud! If you're on a budget and want a good pair of components for your car, these are it.
    Pros:
Works, great, easy to install crossover, and affordable.
    Cons:
Almost no cons except they're not as loud as my previous JL components, so I can't give em a 5 star.

    Awesome component system.

I have two sets of these in my jeep one in front and one in my rear sound bar. Paired with the subwoofer I have and being powered by an alpine ktp-445u they are awesome. Like every one else is stating they lack in the low ranges but that's what the subwoofer is for. I have the high and low pass set at 120Hz and it turns all my friends heads how nice it sounds.
    Pros:
Great price, good quality, nice sound
    Cons:
Poor low range (but that's what subwoofers are for), and the short tweeter wires

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far these speakers sound awesome! And They are only being powered by a Kenwood Excelon X496. In a few months I'll be getting a Kenwood KAC 8405, I'll come back and edit this review accordingly. I don't believe it will be a bad review because These speakers are Great! The two things I was disappointed about was there wasn't any 3M double stick tape for attaching the tweeters to my windshield to save from drilling holes in my "A" post. A minor detail that was easily solved and not enough speaker wire for the tweeters; this too was easily solved.
    Pros:
Component speakers allow detailed imaging by having the tweeters separate so you can aim them towards your listening area.
    Cons:
If you need to attach the tweeters to a glass surface the wasn't any double stick tape and limited speaker wire for the tweeters.

    Excellent upgrade from OEM speakers

Written By Manny Ace, Lemoore, CA on Saturday, June 16, 2012
Installed in a 2007 Toyota Tacoma
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these speakers to replace the stock speakers at the front doors of my 2007 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab Pre-Runner V6. The supplied mounting kit for the 6-3/4" speakers worked well on both doors. The supplied wiring harness could have been a tad longer but I made it work (I had trouble with it at the passenger side door). I had a bit of difficulty installing the tweeters, I had to make a mounting bracket myself in order to install the tweeters in the factory installed tweeter location. When it was time to test the speakers, nothing was coming out until I hooked up the OEM tweeters again. I do not want to mess with the wiring so I kept the OEM tweeters and placed it securely behind the door panel so it will not rattle.

These speakers are really an excellent upgrade from the stock speakers. The magnets are huge and the construction of the speakers are outstanding. Even my kids appreciated the great sound difference. It did not take me very long to install theses speakers, thanks to Cructhfield for the Step by step guide and the supplied bracket and wiring harness, that really saved me a bundle.

Next upgrade on my list is the receiver and later on amplifier and a sub.
    Pros:
Great component speakers and upgrade for the price.
    Cons:
I still have the original tweeter installed (not Kenwood's fault - most likely Toyota)

    Not a 6 3/4 speaker

Written By DaveM, MA on Thursday, June 14, 2012

From my experience, this is absolutely NOT a 6 3/4 speaker, it is a 6.5in speaker. My truck uses 6.75in speakers which these claim to be (the box says "oversized 6.5") but they will not fit my openings and are slightly too small. The supplied adapter rings are useless unless you own a GM or Honda vehicle with special mounting holes. They should include 6.75in holes but they only include an offset 6.5in which is obviously no help since the speakers are already 6.5 in. The mounting holes on the speaker even line up with the holes labeled "6.5in" on the adapter.

After milling the ring to have 6.75in countersunk holes, i was able to bolt the speakers in but they then stuck out too much for the door panel to go back on. Be aware, these speakers have a deeper mounting depth than most factory units as well.

On the plus side, the are very high quality speakers with a large magnet and solid cone and surround. The tweeters are fine but nothing too special. They do feature a nice swivel mounting cup if you actually use it. The inline crossovers are very handy as opposed to separate ones that must be mounted. However, as such, they don't allow any customization as far as sound level is concerned like a discrete unit would.

My only real complaint is that upon a quick installation, they were much quieter than the other cheap aftermarket speakers I had previously. Both are 4Ohm speakers but I guess this can be compensated for in the headunit.
    Pros:
    Quality, inline crossover
    Cons:
    Mounting options, quiet

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these to replace the Monsoon system that was in the car, I have to say I am very happy with them. I listen mostly to EDM such as Drum&Bass-Dubstep-House-Electro, and these hold up to the wide range of frequencies in the music. The mid and highs are great, I don't use them for bass as I have a subwoofer installed. But I would imagine they would hold up well.
    Pros:
Very clear sound reproduction for the price
    Cons:
Installation a pain in my Passat(not Kenwoods fault)

    Awesome Upgrade

Installed in a 2001 Mitsubishi Montero Sport
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought these to replace the stock speakers in a Montero Sport, and boy I was surprised by the difference! There was a definite sound quality improvement and everything fit (mostly). Overall I am extremely satisfied with this product and I'm about to buy these again for the rear speakers. The greatest thing is that Crutchfield provided the wiring harness, which made installation completely easy!

If you want a thumping bass you'll probably want a subwoofer.

Definitely take note on the mounting depth if you're planning on mounting these tweeters in the door panels. The screw on the back of the tweeter is long and will interfere with the inside of the door. On my installation I had to drill a clearance hole for these to fit.
    Pros:
Crutchfield quality parts and service can't be beat! Great Mid-bass and superior highs.
    Cons:
None! Other than the mount of the tweeter mentioned above.

If you are looking for slappin' bass don't, that is not what these are for... get a sub. IF you are looking for a very good mid-bass with excellent sound then this is it. The clarity is extremely good and is exactly what I was looking for. This was a replacement for my factory mid/bass tweeter speakers and what a huge difference in clarity from the stock stuff.
    Pros:
If you are looking for true clarity in sound then this is the set and excellent for the price point
    Cons:
    NONE

    Nice upgrade from factory units

Written By HootMan, Walla Walla, WA on Monday, October 24, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I went looking for replacements for the factory front door component speakers in a 2007 Chevy Colorado standard cab. The factory speakers had failed twice (replaced once under warranty). Checked out some options at Crutchfield online and then called to ask an advisor which product may be the easiest to install. The advisor was great and very helpful and suggested these Kenwoods.

Mounting the woofers took a little planning and required drilling a couple of screw holes for the supplied mounting bracket. They fit perfectly behing the stock door panel.

I was able to mount the tweeters in the supplied bracket by removing the factory trim ring and cutting out the grill with a utility knife. The finished install looks as good or better than the factory tweeter.

The sound from these speakers is a HUGE improvement from the factory units. The highs are much brighter and the lows much more solid. They would sound even better with a more powerful stereo or power amp but there are hassles involved with changing the stereo units in late model GM vehicles because the warning chimes are through the stereo.

I would highly recommend these speakers and Crutchfield to anyone that wants to improve the factory sound and/or replace factory speakers that have failed.
    Pros:
Much better sound than factory speakers. Fairly easy install.

    Great, especially for price

Written By Tyler C, Joliet, IL on Friday, August 12, 2011

First off, you know you're getting a great product when you order anything Kenwood. I have always been a fan. I used these to replace my front speakers. I had 5.25s before, and it said that these would not fit. However, the speakers came with adapters (actually in the speaker box.) I screwed the adapters into the factory location, put in the woofers, and it fit like a dream. Literally couldn't have been easier. I did run into problems with the tweeters, though. They are big and would not fit in my factory tweeter location. I wanted to get them in without having to cut any holes in my door panel, but it wasn't gonna happen. I ended up drilling a hole in the tweeter grill and just mounted them there. The grill comes right off and can be easily replaced, so I didn't ruin the whole door panel. They sound good and get loud. I run them off of a Kenwood head unit, and I'm sure they'd sound better off of an amp. They get loud and sound great, you just have to know how to set your EQ. Otherwise it will distort with lows or get too high with highs. The highs and mids sound great, but there are no lows. But I didn't expect lows..that's why there are subwoofers. Great for the price.

Great speakers. Kenwood always puts out a great product but the only problem
with them is that you need more than a stock Dodge Infinity system to power them
other than that they sound awesome. Easy fit into the stock locations and the
separate tweeters were easy to adapt into the stock tweeter locations.

These speakers perform well. They will not give you low bass and don't expect
them to. They are solid highs and mids.

During the install I found out the tweeters didn't fit in the stock tweeter hole.
Instead of trying to rig a frame we just siliconed the tweeter in the stock location.
    It's basically glued in.

I was looking for quality and clarity in the high and mid range. It's exactly what I
    got. These sound great.

    Great Value Sound Great

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed a new system in a 1999 Altima GLE for my son as a replacement to the
OEM system. They were installed in the doors along with a Sony CDX-GT540UI
receiver and a pair of Sony speakers in the rear. The 6 1/4's fit perfectly in
the doors but the tweeters required custom installation to replace the existing
tweeters. It turned out very well and they sound great. The lows are more than
adequate despite the absence of an external amp and sub-woofer. If you want a
quality pair of separates at a great price I recommend the Kenwood KFC-P709PS
package. In addition, shortly after purchase, I found the speakers on line at a
lower price and Crutchfield matched it.

I installed these in my 2002 Silverado front doors and they made a big difference. The highs
are clear and the bass is good but the mids are lacking. I'm still running the stock head unit
which may have something to do with that. I mounted the tweeters in the stock brackets by
removing the stock tweets and enlarging the hole to accommodate the new ones. The
installation looks stock. The wire harness Crutchfield provided made wiring easy with no
    guess work.
