Our take on the Onkyo TX-NR609

3D TV Learn more

The Onkyo TX-NR609 is a first-rate home theater receiver. Of course, with THX® Select2 Plus™ certification you expect excellence. You also get the latest surround sound options, including Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD™ Master Audio — two high-resolution formats found on many Blu-ray movies. Six HDMI inputs — including one in front for easy access — let you connect all your equipment. But movies, games and TV are just the beginning.

Overflowing with possibilities
Start off by plugging your iPod® or thumb drive into the front USB port to get the beat going. You can use the Ethernet port to connect the 'NR609 to your compatible home network. Or if you have a wireless network, you can use Onkyo's optional Wi-Fi® adapter. Next comes the flood of music files stored on your networked computer. Then open your home to thousands of Internet radio stations, from Tulsa to Timbuktu. The list continues with a wide variety of optional streaming services including Sirius/XM®, PANDORA® Internet radio, Rhapsody®, and more. Clearly, boredom is no longer an option.

Easy to set up and control
With a full suite of Audyssey® sound-shaping tools, the 'NR609 will automatically balance and equalize the sound based on your room's acoustics. It also maintains optimum dynamics, so whether it's the filmmaker or commercial sponsor dropping a surprise sonic bomb, neither your senses nor sensibility will be harmed. The 'NR609 also features a graphic user interface to make control easy and intuitive with overlays on your TV screen. And you can download a free Onkyo app to use your iPhone®, iPad® or Android™ device as powerful system remotes.

We heard something new
Onkyo recently announced that the Spotify® streaming service is now available on this receiver, along with several others in Onkyo's 2011 line. We decided to try it out. Our Onkyo receiver's on-screen display showed our Spotify Premium play lists, including our synced iTunes® library. We were able to search for more music via the receiver remote and virtual keyboard. Spotify is a cloud-based service with a music library of over 15 million songs that has only recently become available in the U.S.

You will need to download a free firmware upgrade. Go to Onkyo's website for instructions. Requires a wireless home network. Receiver requires wired connection to the router. Works only with Spotify premium service. Subscription fees apply. Broadband service required.

      Audio Features

WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology): This technology uses low-negative-feedback circuit topology for accurate signal reproduction, improved dynamic signal-to-noise ratio, and better delivery of power peaks.

3-Stage Inverted Darlington Circuitry: The TX-NR609 employs 3-stage inverted Darlington circuitry for ultra-low distortion and less jitter.

H.C.P.S. (High Current Power Supply): The Onkyo TX-NR609 is equipped with a H.C.P.S. massive high power transformer to keep your music sounding great at low and high volume levels.

Optimum Gain Volume Circuitry: Optimum Gain Volume Control adjusts the gain so that less than half the amount of attenuation is needed, ensuring the signal never comes close to the noise floor. This protects the signal against noise, resulting in a dramatically clearer sound.

Burr-Brown DACs (Digital-to-Analog Converters): This receiver is equipped with 192kHz/24-bit Burr-Brown DACs to decode and playback high-resolution recordings with less jitter and clearer sound.

32-Bit Processing DSP: The Onkyo TX-NR609 is equipped with a powerful and highly accurate 32-bit processing DSP (Digital Signal Processor) for better surround sound reproduction.

THX Select2 Plus Certified: The TX-NR609 is THX Select2 Plus certified. THX surround technology was founded by George Lucas and utilizes stringent standards that ensure movies are reproduced in movie theaters and home theaters just as the director intended. THX Select2 Plus requirements define hundreds of parameters, including - amplifier performance, preamplifier performance, and operation for both digital & analog domains.

THX Loudness Plus: THX Loudness Plus is a volume control technology featured in THX Ultra2 Plus and THX Select2 Plus certified receivers. With THX Loudness Plus, home theater audiences can experience the rich details in a surround mix at any volume level. THX Loudness Plus compensates for the tonal and spatial shifts that occur when the volume is reduced by intelligently adjusting ambient surround channel levels and frequency response. The THX Loudness Plus feature can be applied when listening in any THX listening mode.

Listening Modes: This receiver incorporates a wide variety of listening modes to bring you maximum enjoyment from your audio and video software. You can assign a default listening mode to each input source so that listening mode will be selected automatically when you select the corresponding input source. The following audio formats are supported by the receiver's Listening Mode - Mono, Stereo, 5.1-channel, and 7.1-channel.

      Stereo/Mono Modes
Stereo Sound is output by the front left and right speakers and subwoofer.
Mono Use this mode when watching an old movie with a mono soundtrack.
      Direct Modes
Direct In this mode, audio from the input source is output without surround-sound processing. This mode delivers pure sound with minimum sound quality adjustment and filtration.
      Dolby Pro Logic
Dolby Pro Logic II Dolby Pro Logic II transforms high-quality stereo sound into 5.1-channel surround sound. Thanks to its full-range performance, you will hear all the detail and subtleties of a compelling five-channel Dolby surround sound mix from a stereo signal. You can select between PLII Movie, Music, and Game modes.
Dolby Pro Logic IIx Dolby Pro Logic IIx transforms high-quality stereo and 5.1ch sound into 6.1- or 7.1-cchannel surround sound. With Dolby Pro Logic IIx you experience engaging, natural surround sound. Special effects are more realistic than you ever thought possible. Your movies and television programming sound richer, with more depth. You can select between PLIIx Movie, Music, and Game modes.
      Dolby Pro Logic IIz

Providing a dramatic listening alternative for 7.1 systems, Dolby Pro Logic IIz brings the added dimension of height to create an immersive 7.1-channel surround sound experience from any stereo, 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1 movie, music, TV, or game audio source. Dolby Pro Logic IIz identifies and processes ambient sound energy and directs this information to front height speakers in a 7.1-channel environment.

      Dolby Digital
Dolby Digital Dolby Digital has been selected as the default format for DVD video, standard 2 channel audio playback and HDTV Digital broadcasting. Dolby Digital features two independent surround channels giving same full range as the three front channels. Plus it adds a Low Frequency Effect channel LFE. Dolby Digital accomplishes this by using a technique called compression.
Dolby Digital Plus Dolby Digital Plus is based on core Dolby Digital technologies. Dolby Digital Plus is an advanced surround sound audio codec designed specifically for evolving media. Dolby Digital Plus brings cinematic sound to Blu-ray, broadcast, online, game, and mobile phone entertainment (up to 7.1ch)
Dolby Digital TrueHD Dolby TrueHD produces audio that is identical to and every bit as spectacular as the master recording. It lets you experience the full potential of Blu-ray Disc (up to 7.1ch), and is even ready for future HD delivery formats.
Dolby EX Dolby Digital EX takes the Dolby Digital 5.1-channel setup one step further with an additional center surround channel (reproduced through one or two speakers) for extra dimensional detail and an enveloping surround sound effect.
      DTS
DTS DTS (Digital Theater Systems) uses the same concept as Dolby Digital, but implements a lower compression rate. This leads to more dynamic range, improved channel separation, and more subtle nuances.
DTS-HD High Resolution Audio DTS-HD Audio delivers sound quality that matches the clear and vivid images of high-definition video. Blu-ray and HD-DVD discs deliver five times the video resolution of standard DVD and produce images with stunning realism. But that's only half of the story. You need incredible sound to complete the high definition experience and DTS-HD Audio provides the highest quality multi-channel (7.1ch) sound possible. Movies come alive with sound as lifelike as the picture, and music becomes as real as a live performance.
      Master Audio
DTS 96/24 DTS 96/24 offers a higher quality level of multi-channel audio (up to 5.1 channels) for standard DVDs. The "96" refers to a 96kHz sampling rate (compared to the typical 48kHz sampling rate.) The "24" refers to 24-bit depth, compared to 16-bit depth used for CD sound, which means there is more audio information present.
DTS-ES (Discrete/Matrix) DTS-ES (Discrete/Matrix) delivers 6.1 channels of discrete or matrixed audio. Movies encoded in DTS-ES will dramatically intensify the DTS surround effect with the addition of a surround center-channel speaker.
DTS Express DTS uses a system called DTS Express to deliver Secondary or Sub Audio to your player. The DTS Express audio is mixed with the Primary Audio, giving you an intensely great interactive surround experience.
DTS Neo: 6 DTS Neo:6 takes 2-channel (stereo) audio and completely transforms it into up to six full-bandwidth matrix channels of surround sound. Your home theater system will produce six and five separate channels, respectively, to match your speaker layout. DTS Neo:6 can also generate a center surround channel from 5.1 material.
      Audyssey Surround
Audyssey DSX Audyssey DSX lets you augment a standard 7.1-channel surround set-up with two "front-high" and two "front-wide" channels. These extra speakers expand the height and width of the soundstage and help to produce a more realistic and immersive listening experience. These channels carry non-directional audio that add a new vertical and horizontal dimension to your movies and games. The soundstage of Audyssey DSX can be adjusted between -3dB to +3dB.
      THX Certified
THX THX Select2 Plus AV receivers feature proprietary THX technologies which accurately translate movie soundtracks for home theater playback.
      Onkyo Original DSP Modes
Orchestra For classical or operatic music.
Unplugged For acoustic instruments, vocals, and jazz.
Studio-Mix Suitable for rock or pop.
TV Logic Adds realistic acoustics to TV shows.
Game The receiver offers four different Gaming modes - RPG, Action, Rock, and Sports.
All Channel Stereo Stereo sound from all speakers. Ideal for background music.
Full Mono All speakers output the same sound in mono.
Theater Dimensional Theater-Dimensional circuitry takes the complexity out of conventional surround-sound setups and lets you experience the excitement of surround sound from as few as two ordinary speakers. Theater-Dimensional's unique multi-speaker modes let you place up to five speakers conveniently by the TV, for the most realistic virtual-surround sound possible.
      Other Listening Modes
DSD Audio signals are stored as single-bit values at a high-frequency sampling rate of 2.8224 MHz, while noise shaping and oversampling are used to reduce distortion - providing a better audio quality with a dynamic range of up to 128 db.
Multichannel This mode is used with PCM multichannel sources.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the A/V receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.

Dolby Pro Logic II Music Settings: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust:

      • Panorama: Broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect, especially effective when there is limited output from the surround channels, panorama can be turned on/off in the menu.
      • Dimension: Allows you to move the sound field forward or backward.
      • Center Width: Allows you to adjust the width of the center channel.

Center Image: In the Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center. Adjustment varies from 5 (nothing subtracted from the L/R channels) to 0 (L/R channel output is cut in half).

Listening Angle: While listening in the Theater Dimensional mode you can adjust the listening angle to either Wide (if listening angle is 40-degrees) or Narrow (if listening angle is 20-degrees).

Audyssey 2EQ Automatic Speaker Setup: With the supplied speaker setup microphone, Audyssey 2EQ can measure the number of speakers connected, their sizes, crossover frequencies and distances front he listening position and calculate the optimal speaker setting for you automatically. The supplied microphone includes an attached 19.5' cable that plugs into the Setup Mic input on front of the receiver. There is a threaded insert on the bottom of the microphone so it can be mounted on a tripod for accurate listening position placement. Three listening position measurements are taken, one primary and two secondary, to optimize the surround effect for a broad area. You can also setup your speaker system manually using the receiver.

      • Subwoofer: Yes or No for subwoofer connection.
      • Crossover: Set the crossover point for each set of speakers (front, center, surround, surround back/front high) and the subwoofer individually. The speaker crossovers can bet set to full bandwidth, 40 Hz, 50 Hz, 60 Hz, 70 Hz, 80 Hz (THX standard), 90 Hz, 100 Hz, 120 Hz, 150 Hz, or 200 Hz. The subwoofer crossover can be set to bypass, 80, 90, 100, or 120Hz.
      • Equalizer Settings: With the Equalizer settings, you can adjust the tone of the speakers and subwoofer individually with a 5-band EQ. You can adjust each frequency band (63, 250, 1000, 4000, and 16000Hz) for each speaker from -6dB to +6dB. You can also adjust each frequency band (25, 40, 63, 100, and 160Hz) for the subwoofer from -6 dB to +6 dB.
      • Speaker Distance: The distance from the listening position to each speaker can be set from six inches to 30 feet in six inch increments.
      • Speaker Levels: The output level of each speaker is adjustable +/-12dB; -15dB to +12dB for the subwoofer.

Audyssey Dynamic EQ: Audyssey Dynamic EQ solves the problem of deteriorating sound quality as volume is decreased by taking into account human perception and room acoustics. Dynamic EQ selects the best possible frequency response and surround levels moment-by-moment as volume is changed. The result is bass response, tonal balance and surround impression that remain constant despite changes in volume. Audyssey Dynamic EQ combines information from incoming source levels with actual output sound levels in the room, a prerequisite for delivering a loudness correction solution. Audyssey Dynamic EQ works in tandem with Audyssey 2EQ to provide well-balanced sound for every listener at any volume level.

Audyssey Dynamic Volume: Audyssey Dynamic Volume solves the problem of large variations in volume level between television programs, commercials, and between the soft and loud passages of movies. Dynamic Volume looks at the preferred volume setting by t he user and then monitors how the volume of program material is being perceived by listeners in real time to decide whether an adjustment is needed. Whenever necessary, Dynamic Volume makes the necessary rapid or gradual adjustments to maintain the desired playback volume level while optimizing the dynamic range. Audyssey Dynamic EQ is integrated in Dynamic Volume so that as the playback volume is adjusted automatically, the perceived bass response, tonal balance, surround impression, and dialog clarity remain the same whether watching movies, flipping between television channels, or changing from stereo to surround sound content.

Bass And Treble: You can independently adjust the Bass (50Hz) and Treble (20kHz) of the TX-NR609 from -10 to +10 dB.

Double Bass: This setting boosts the bass output by feeding bass sound from the front left, right, and center channels to the subwoofer.

Music Optimizer: The Music Optimizer function enhances the sound quality of compressed music files. The Music Optimizer function only works with PCM digital audio input signals with a sampling rate below 48kHz and analog input signals.

Re-EQ: With the Re-EQ function, you can compensate for harsh high-frequency content, making it more suitable for listening.

Late Night Feature: The Late Night feature limits the dynamic range of Dolby Digital recordings. Limiting the dynamic range makes it easier to find a volume that ensures the quiet sounds are not too quiet and the loud sounds are not too loud for night time listening. This allows you to comfortably listen to without the need to constantly adjust the volume to keep from waking family/neighbors. The choices are: Off, Low, and High.

Note: This feature only works with Dolby Digital Encoded software and the depth of the feature will vary based on the individual software package.

Bi-Amping Front Speakers: The Surround-Back/Front-High speaker terminals can be reassigned and used along with the Front terminals to bi-amp the front speakers, providing improved bass and treble performance. When bi-amping the front speakers the receiver is limited to a 5.1ch speaker system in the main room.

ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.

Assignable Digital Inputs: The Onkyo receiver is equipped with two optical digital inputs and two coaxial digital inputs. All four digital inputs are assignable. You can choose auto decoding , PCM, or DTS for the digital audio inputs. Auto will decode the signal in its original form (Dolby Digital, DTS, PCM, etc), PCM decodes the signal to 2-channel, while DTS decodes only DTS formatted sources.

Binding-Post Speaker Terminals: There are color-coded binding-post terminals for the following speaker connections - Front, Center, Surround, and Surround Back/Front High. The binding post terminals will accept bare-wire, pin-connectors, and banana plugs (single/dual). The Zone 2 speaker outputs use color-coded spring-clip terminals, which will accept bare-wire or pin-connectors.

Headphones: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the main speakers are automatically muted (the Powered Zone 2 speakers are not muted).

Note: When you connect an iPod or iPhone to the USB port on this receiver, no sound will be output from the headphone jack.

      VideoFeatures

HDMI (v1.4): The TX-NR609 has six assignable HDMI v1.4 inputs (5 rear/1 front) and one HDMI v1.4 output for connecting DVD players, HDTV set-top boxes, and other video components to your TV or projector. The receiver's HDMI circuitry allows the receiver to output an HDMI audio signal from its speaker outputs, headphone out, and HDMI out so you don't have to run and additional analog or digital cable. The HDMI inputs can accept and switch 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p video signals to a HDTV. The HDMI inputs will support uncompressed standard or high definition digital video along with the following audio signals: 2-channel linear PCM, Multichannel linear PCM, and Bitstream. Each HDMI input is assignable.

Marvel Qdeo Video Chip for 4K Upscaling: The Onkyo TX-NR609 utilizes a Marvel Qdeo Video Chip for 4K Upscaling and video processing. The Marvel Qdeo Video Chip produces quiet and natural video, free from noise and artifacts. Analog video signals (composite/component/PC) are converted to HDMI and can be scaled to the resolution set in the menu: Through (no scaling), Auto (automatically scaled to the highest resolution supported by the display), 480p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p.

HDMI Through: When enabling the HDMI Through function, regardless of whether the AV receiver is "on" or in "standby" both audio and video streams from an HDMI input will be output to your television, via the receiver HDMI monitor output. You can select between 3 HDMI Through functions modes.

      • Auto: Detects the signal and automatically selects the input sources.
      • Source: Selects the input source (BD/DVD, VCR/DVR, CBL/SAT, Game, PC, Aux, TV/CD, Port) for which the HDMI Through function in enabled.
      • Last: The HDMI Through function is activated on the input source selected at the time of setting the AV receiver to the "standby" mode.

3D-Compatible: The TX-NR609's HDMI v.1.4 connections will accept 3D video from your 3D-ready Blu-ray player and output the video signal in 3D to your 3D-ready HDTV.

x.v.Color: The AV receiver supports x.v.Color, offering a wider color range than the current broadcast standard. For the x.v.Color feature to be useful, the entire video production chain must be compatible (camera-editing-format-player-display).

Deep Color: The Onkyo receiver also supports Deep Color which allows the color depth of video signals passing through HDMI to be raised. The number of colors that could be expressed by 1 pixel was 24 bits (16,777,216 colors) with a standard HDMI jack. However, the number of colors which can be expressed by 1 pixel is 36 bits with a Deep Color enabled HDMI jack. Since the gradation of the depth of a color can be expressed more finely with more bits, continuous color changes can be more smoothly expressed. For the Deep Color feature to be useful, the entire video production chain must be compatible (camera-editing-format-player-display).

Note: x.v. Color and Deep Color technology are supported only when source product, HDMI cable, media and HDTV all support those features.

Auto Lip Sync: The Lip Sync function can automatically synchronize HDMI audio and video that has gotten out of sync due to the complex digital video processing being performed by your HDMI-compatible TV. With HDMI Lip Sync, the audio delay required to synchronize the audio and video is calculated and applied automatically by the AV receiver.

A/V Sync Control: Occasionally, you may need to manually adjust the audio/video signals that are not properly synchronized manually. Typically when using a progressive scanning DVD player. You can correct this by delaying the audio; options are 0 (no delay) to 800 milliseconds, in 10 millisecond steps.

Component Video: There are 2 component video inputs and 1 component video output. The component video inputs and outputs have a bandwidth of 5Hz to 100MHz.

Picture Adjust: Using the Picture Adjust feature, you can adjust the picture quality and reduce any noise appearing on your TV screen.

      • Wide Mode: Auto, Full, Zoom, Wide Zoom, or 4:3.
      • Picture Mode: Custom (Brightness/Contrast/Hue/Saturation/Color Temp), Cinema (for movies), Game (for gaming), Through (changes resolution), Direct (no adjustment).
      • Picture Settings: Film Mode (video or film), Edge Enhancement (sharpens image), Noise Reduction (reduce noise)

      Onkyo TX-NR609 - Love it!

Written By Todd, Houston, TX on Sunday, September 16, 2012
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I usually do not take the time to write reviews but in this case I felt compelled to do so. First kudos to Crutchfield for their pre-sales support I received. I picked out the unit online but they helped me confirm it would meet my needs. Besides the basics like connecting to a Blu-ray player, I wanted support for 2 Zones with separate volume control for each Zone and the ability to connect to the internet to do things like play Pandora. I've had the unit for 9 months now and it does all of the above beautifully. Hint, fortunately both my phone and LAN jacks use CAT5 cable so even though I only had a phone jack at the unit I was able to easily re-wire it for LAN/Internet. This eliminated the need to purchase the wireless USB Plug and has ensured consistent bandwidth at least within our house. Anyway, the 2 Zones work great, Pandora works awesome and it also comes with VTurner which allows you to play local and many other radio stations which is something we could not do previously with any clarity. Recently, we purchased Apple TV which has an HDMI connection that I plugged into the PC Port. So now any movies or music on our iPhones/iPad can be played through the receiver. It's pretty awesome to be able to play a song from my iPhone while at the same time flip through photos that I can display on our flat screen TV. You have to love technology when it works and for me it all works better than expected.
      Pros:
Sound, video, support for number of devices, 2 Zone Support and Internet connectivity.
      Cons:
No built in Netflix... granted I can get this through our apple TV but it would be nice if it was one of the options like Pandora. No support for a Zone 2 subwoofer... ideally this would be a wireless connection so I could place one on our outside patio without having to wire it.

A Great Receiver with One Limitation

Written By Joe B, North Carolina on Saturday, July 28, 2012
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is an excellent receiver in all aspects but one. The clarity of sound is great, the number of connections in the rear is great and the operation of the unit is easy.

What the unit is lacking is something that I missed in my evaluation. If you use this receiver as a 7.1 channel unit, you will not be able to use Zone 2: they are mutually exclusive. So I have a choice. I can either drop back to a 5.1 setup and then use Zone 2 (for outside deck speakers) or I use a second receiver to power my outdoor speakers. Either choice is bad because 6th and 7th speakers are already mounted in a wall and second, my A/V cabinet will not accommodate a 2nd receiver.

Given that the TX609 unit is sold as a 7.1 system, it seems awfully peculiar, if not outright deceptive, that 7.1 and Zone 2 would be incompatible. For this reason, I question why Onkyo would even bother to put a Zone 2 pair of channels on a 7.1 unit with a limitation such as this.

I contacted a Crutchfield support rep yesterday and was informed that Zone 2 and 7.1 are, in fact, mutually exclusive, so I'm not making this up. He went on to say that there are receivers with fully operational 7.1 and Zone 2 features but they cost about 6 times what I paid for the 609.

      Very frustrating!

Awesome Sound and High Precision Network AV Receiver

Written By Eddie, Houston, Texas on Sunday, May 13, 2012

When this unit arrive in my home, I set it up by connecting my Toshiba 55" 55WX800u LED 3D HDTV 240Hz refresh, Panasonic DMP-110DPT Bluray player 3D, 2 main front speaker 300W RMS 3-WAY JBL, 2x75W RMS Canton 2way speaker as surround speaker, 2x150W RMS JBL 2-way and 1-300W powered Subwoofer. The CINEMA sound effect from the DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1ch were distributed accurately and each speaker responded instantly in detail as they were assigned. I used Onkyo calibration mic. and it balances the sound distribution in response with my room size and the acoustic. I set up the system in our Master bedroom temporarily as the system is intended to be set at the living room. I tried to switch the sound effect in THX mode, it was very good but I still like the DTS-HD master audio. Plugging my IPOD, the sound is very good an I like the response of the low, mid and high. The instruments are clear and the response of all the speakers are well balance. FM stereo is ok and I feel warmess of the mid and high. I did not play the CD audio since I was to used the IPOD as it has more clarity than the CD. I tried to used my Samsung Galaxy tab 7.0 with the Onkyo Remote Apps and I hook up the LAN cable to the LAN port of ONKYO from my router. The response is good from my tab although some of the bottons I expect them to work but its not. The music albums from my galaxy was sent to ONKYO wirelessly and the sound is great although I experience some quick drop of the signal affecting the song.
      Pros:
Excellent sounds in 7.1 DTS-HD Master audio and Dolby True HD. THX® Select2 Plus could be an add-on but it is a good feature ONKYO provided on this model. It's fun to use the ONKYO Remote Apps via my tab. I will use also my IPAD3 to remotely control this unit once I get back home again.
      Cons:
No cover on the USB and audio ports on front. If ONKYO can provide flip down plastic cover, then it would be better to avoid dust entry.

Written By MWL, Sacramanto, CA on Friday, May 11, 2012
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Superior in every way the the two zoned 5.1 Denon that I replaced (the Denon burned out after 6 years, yes, smoke!). Much easier to install, much easier to select sources and outputs, much easier to understand the remote control unit. I am not talking about a little bit easier, I am talking an order of magnitude better. Excellent sound and video. Crutchfield sales rep was incredibly knowledgable and efficient. Crutchfield is my electronics provider from now on.
      Pros:
      Ease of installation and use.
      Cons:
      None noted.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Was trying to decide between this and Denon. Previously had an Onkyo which was a rock and never had a problem. Called customer service (hands down best on planet) and spoke with Bryce. After a very short and informative conversation, he had me convinced in my decision. Couldn't be more satisfied and setup was a breeze. Thank you to all the Crutchfield team - you all have gained a lifetime customer.
      Pros:
      Features, OSD, setup

all the features you could ask for at a good price point. you would have to pay twice the price for more features. the andriod app gives you a streaming feature much like apple air play.

      too many to mention

      Great Receiver

Written By dbs, Durham, NC on Wednesday, May 02, 2012
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sound is fantastic. Auto calibration with the mic is simple and great. Very happy with the system. Love the network music apps.
      Pros:
The sound. Lots of connections. Driving zone 2 speakers.
      Cons:
No digital inputs to zone 2. My CD player has a digital link. (Found a way around it - did both analog and digital links. Use the analog for zone 2). Also, timing between main source and zone 2 is off - for net radio, e.g., so can't play both at the same time.

One of the best for the money

Written By ScottC, Chesterfield, MO on Thursday, April 19, 2012

Originally I was leaning toward the new model Pioneer AV receivers and found the quality surprisingly lacking. Two receivers in a row defective. Deciding to go up a notch for 7.1 as opposed to 5.1, the Onkyo line provided good surprises rather than the bad when hooking this one up. Internet connectivity, computer network connection to Windows Media Player, a gamut of inputs. The only thing I felt this great system was missing was a preamp for the older turntables. Not a showstopper, knowing you can buy one very reasonably ($15-20). Now I see a new version is available that touts 3D. Well, the fact is, this model also has that feature. Perhaps they modified it. Beyond that is Dolby and...THX sound. A great receiver and very well made! The manual is rather good considering how often you find manuals deficient. It could still use some improvement, but I have no questions simply by playing with it. The receiver also features dual amplifier capability if you want music to be in another room. Outstanding clarity and punch. I am thrilled with the Onkyo, so very disappointed in a former favorite with Pioneer (going way way back).
      Pros:
Internet streaming mode, home networking with Windows Media Player, a gamut of HDMI inputs/1 output, Computer connectivity cability by cable if not by internet, all metal construction. Wireless dongle option for wireless internet connection or with RJ45!
      Cons:
I honestly can't think of any.

      Fix for Low Audio Volume

Written By stewartwb, NC on Monday, April 02, 2012

Many reviewers mention the same CON - the volume must be cranked way up to reach their desired volume level. I had the same issue as well, until I realized that this is a feature of the Audyssey EQ surround sound processing modes. If you switch the surround mode to DIRECT, you'll find the levels are much higher, as the receiver just passes through the decoded channels (5.1 or whatever) directly through the amps to the speakers. I have found that when I'm showing off the receiver to friends, I often switch to DIRECT for the WOW factor. But for everyday use (with my wife at home), the Audyssey EQ modes provide a more balanced and enjoyable viewing experience.
      Pros:
Awesome sound and features; excellent bang-for-the-buck.
      Cons:
Some concerns about reliability, based on some reviews on Amazon.com

      Great system for the price

Written By John2John, Indianapolis, IN on Friday, March 30, 2012
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Packed with more features than I care to use, but there are no good recievers on the market with only the features I do want and use. I don't mind though because the price was right and who knows? I may decide that I want to use some of those other features in the future.
      Pros:
Great sound quality, pretty easy to set up and use, plain, non-superficial styling and look.
      Cons:
Only one. The remote control is clunky and doesn't feel good or secure in hand, but then I'll just use a universal remote and store the other in the Onkyo product box.

      Best Deal for the $$$

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Crutchfield Rep helped me select the receiver. I'm using it to push a 5.1 system in my main living area that has a vaulted ceiling. It can do 7.1, but I'm using those extra outputs to bi-amp my front speakers. I use it for 50% music and 50% tv/movies. I thought I may need to go with the 709, but after being quizzed by the Rep, we determined the 609 would be fulfill my needs and allow me to upgrade my rear surrounds. Great advice! The Audyssey calibration is awesome. I first spent an hour setting up the sound myself. Then I tried the Audyssey calibration (super easy) and the improvement was noticable. The HDMI output to my TV works great. I use the following inputs: sat box, DVD, xbox, and airport express. Everything works great. Thanks, Crutchfield!
      Pros:
Audyssey cal is great. Easy to operate. TV pic is awesome.
      Cons:
      None.

So many options and inputs. more than I know what to do with them. Pairing it with my ipad was a breeze. Couldn't be happier. Thanks to Crutchfield for the great service too.

      Pros:
quick delivery, good return policy, a 10 on customer service

      Amazing!

Written By BugFreak, Cocoa, FL on Monday, March 12, 2012
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I upgraded from a pretty old but good Pioneer 5.1 receiver. Even though I kept the same 5.1 speakers I had this thing sounds amazing! I've never heard so much from the rear speakers, so much in fact that during normal t.v. watching the rear sounds spook my whole family. The front sounds amazing as well but the biggest difference I've noticed is the rear sounds. The setup using the little mic was quick and easy but I did have to up my center speaker level a little but that might just be my taste. The HD colors seem much better after running them through the 609 than any other HD source I've had.

On another note, I also picked up the wireless adapter for it so I could listen to my Sirius Internet Radio and Pandora over it which I highly recommend. There are a bunch of other internet style music channels on it too but I don't know or use them. I plugged in the usb node, it picked it right up, entered my wireless info, clicked "net" on the remote and signed right in, it was that fast.
      Pros:
Price, Fantastic sound, FAST setup. So many options I find a new one almost every day that I like better.
      Cons:
Almost 8 inches tall so be sure it fits. Remote does not have DVR options for my satellite t.v. and the satellite t.v. remote will turn it off but not on.

      Decent receiver, terrible documentation

Written By JoeC, SW Florida on Sunday, March 04, 2012
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very easy to make physical connections but documentation on actual set-up is very poor. Spent about an hour doing hardware and software set-up. Called Crutchfield when I had a problem with Pandora. Tech instructed me to perform a factory reset, which turned out to be a needless operation. All my previously made settings were lost. A second tech finally resolved my issues but I then had to spend another hour resetting the options to my own preferences. Still having issues with Zone 2 operation. I have it working but I doubt that it should take as many steps as I now have to go through with the remote to actually use Zone 2. The A/B sellection on my old Denon receiver was much easier to use and understand. I know that Zone 2 allows you to have individual sources. But if you only use it to power outdoor speakers this receiver makes the operation much too complicated. Plus I haven't been able to find any level indation for Zone 2, meaning you have to run back and forth to see how loud things sound in that second zone and reset as needed. Sound quality appears to be very good. Once I have fine-tuned everything I'm hoping I can say this receiver is as good as advertised.
      Pros:
Lots of inputs, good sound quality
      Cons:
Terrible set-up documentation, use of Zone 2 is complicated, only a limited number of input names are available.

This thing jams! Hooked it up at 7.1 and used the ZONE 2 outputs for my outdoor speakers as well. Running two BIC 12" 475 watt subs. Best reciever ever!
      Pros:
Multi speaker outputs and dual sub out. Many HDMI connections.
      Cons:
So many tuning options may confuse beginers.
