Sound bar speakers: room-filling sound with less clutter

Add big sound to your TV without a roomful of speakers. Sound bars require minimal space and wiring, and their sleek designs complement today's flat-panel TVs. Most sound bars have their own built-in amplification, so you won't need to use a home theater receiver. Some models use advanced surround processing and carefully aimed speaker drivers to simulate the effects of a full home theater audio system.

Our take on the Boston Acoustics TVee Model 2

by Loren Barstow

If you just purchased a flat-panel high-definition TV, you're probably getting an amazing picture, but your TV's tiny speakers just can't provide matching sound. The Boston Acoustics TVee Model 2 gives you a simple way to get better audio from your TV, for a more enjoyable experience with all your favorite shows, movies, and video games. It easily connects to your television with just one cable, and looks right at home below the latest flat-panel displays.

The TVee Model 2's woofer adds punchy bass for fuller, richer sound. Its wireless design means there's no need to run cables across your floor or through your walls. Since the woofer measures less than one cubic foot, it's small enough to tuck away in a corner or under an end table. And the TVee Model 2 system learns the volume and mute commands of your existing remote control, so you won't have another remote cluttering up your coffee table.

Highlights:

    Sound bar:
    • connects to any television with a line-level audio output
    • built-in 2.4GHz transmitter
    • learns your existing remote control's volume and mute commands
    • removable cloth grille

    • two 1/2" tweeters
    • 1 pair of RCA stereo inputs
    • keyhole slots for wall mounting
    • 30-5/8"W x 3-15/16"H x 4-5/8"D
    Wireless woofer:
    • allows placement anywhere in the room

    Features

Overview: The Boston Acoustics TVee Model Two is a 2-piece Television Entertainment Enhancement system. It consists of a slim, single stereo "soundbar" that can be placed above or below the TV, and a matching wireless bass speaker. It is designed to greatly enhance the sound of your TV, replacing your TV's tiny speakers and weak amplifier with a total system power of 100 watts. The system can learn the power and volume commands from your TV's remote control.

Design: The speaker cabinets are made of molded ABS plastic. They are internally braced with MDF to eliminate resonance.

Grille: The TVee soundbar is equipped with a removable onyx (black) cloth grille. The bass unit does not have a grille.

Boston P.O.P.: The Boston Personal Option Plan (P.O.P.) allows you to match your environment with optional grilles in multiple colors for the Horizon series speakers. In addition to the Onyx (black) grille that comes with the speaker, you can purchase grilles in Glacier, Chocolat, Rose Bud, Chili Pepper, Silver, Caramel, or Pearl Gray. These optional grilles are available directly from the manufacturer.

Connections: All the TVee Model Two needs is a stereo audio signal fed into the soundbar. You can get this signal from your TV's audio output, or from your satellite or cable box. The bass unit gets its signal wirelessly from the soundbar.

Controls: The soundbar has three top-mounted controls: Power, Mute, and Volume Up/Down. If the input signal from your TV or cable box is variable, the TVee's sound will vary when you change the volume using the TV or Cable Box remote. If the input signal is a constant level, you can "teach" the TVee to respond to your TV's remote control.

    Drivers

Tweeters: The TVee soundbar uses dual 1/2" dome tweeters, one for each channel, for crystal clear high frequencies.

Mid-Bass Drivers: The TVee soundbar has four 2-1/2" mid-bass drivers, two for each channel.

Bass Unit: The TVee's wireless bass unit is equipped with a down-firing 6" woofer.

Enclosures: The soundbar and wireless bass unit each have bass reflex enclosures. The soundbar has ports on each end, while the bass unit has a down-firing 2" diameter port.

Soundbar Placement Options: The TVee soundbar is perfectly sized for TV screens of 32" or more. It is designed to be centered with the screen. It can be placed in front of the TV, or on a shelf right above if the TV is housed in a cabinet. There are two large keyhole slots to facilitate mounting it on a wall.

Bass Unit Placement Options: The TVee bass unit gets its signal from the soundbar wirelessly, so it can be placed virtually anywhere in the room. It only requires plugging into an AC outlet.

    Very Nice

Written By Sasified, Missouri on Saturday, March 12, 2011

I just got the Soundbar today. I was blown away by the sound that is emitted by
such a small speaker. I have a medium sized living room probably 12x18 and I
set the sub in the far corner of the room because I feel like it sounds better when
it's somewhat enclosed. The only problem I ran into was when I first hooked it up
it was interfering with my wifi connection for my laptop. I was worried that I would
have to return it, because I am pretty much addicted to the internet. After
googling it for about an hour I figured out that wireless signals work on channels
much like tvs (1-11). I set the Soundbar on channel 1 on the backside of the
speaker, and then searched for how to change the channel on my wireless
router. I finally figured it out and changed that channel to 11 to keep them the
furthest apart possible and now I am having absolutely no problem with using
the internet while the Soundbar is on.

Overall I am extremely pleased with this product, it sounds great for Sports,
Movies, and especially Music. I would highly recommend it to anyone that is
looking to upgrade their television viewing without having to go all out and
install a full blown surround sound system. Boston Acoustic really did a nice job
    with this product.

    Did not meet our needs

Written By BobN., Texas on Thursday, February 24, 2011

All the complaints listed... hard to program remotes (had to reset and start
over following more intricate and detailed instructions found online at the
product website, finally got it, but it did take research as manual was
useless), range of remote is limited, volume tends to be either too low or too
loud. If that weren't enough.... it interfered with our home wireless network.
We could not use a laptop in the same room as the speakers resulting in family
squabbles as we usually have people doing both activities. Movies bought online
through the t.v. were also impossible unless we set the volume where we wanted
it and then hit play and left it there. Any adjustments up or down in volume
after the movie started would knock the movie offline. We were using this
product with a Samsung HD t.v. and Comcast cable if it helps.

If you are just going to watch t.v. and your own DVDs, it's okay. For our
needs and activities, it was a bust so we returned it.

    GREAT SOUND SYSTEM. GREAT PRICE!

Written By Anonymous, midwest on Friday, February 19, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

i love this soundbar and wireless sub! the sound quality is SO much better than any of the samsungs we looked at. real quality at a great price. crutchfield makes it easy. super fast shipping and awesome tech support!
the only drawback was that we have a samsung tv, and this unit was not made to hang right on the actual television, so my husband ended up making a bracket for it, which looks super, because we did not want to hang it on the wall.

    Bummer

Written By Doug, Brookfield, CT on Saturday, January 16, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this prouduct based on the 50+ reviews I read here and the fact that all the
earlier glitches had been workde out. Well, I received the product and set up was
easy. The sound was OK, did not blow me away just OK.

THE PROBLEM was that the remote to control the sound only communicated with the
product when it was 3 to 5' away. This was totally unacceptable as the set is in a
bedroom. This problem was identified earlier on the blogs but was supposedly fixed.

I returned it and bought a Bose GS Cinemate from Crutcfield. The Bose was twice
theprice + but is a terrific system for my bedroom 54" Panasonic G50 plazma. I'm in
heaven but a few dollars shorter in the wallet.

    Exceptional Quality, Great Sound

Written By cujo, Naples, Fl on Thursday, January 07, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had this for about a month now... It works perfectly, sounds great and was a snap to
    install.
The quality of the unit is exceptional, the sound is great. Additionally, what I really liked
about this unit was it's size. It was small enough to fit nicely under the TV and yet offered
great sound. The remote base is a very nice feature because it is wireless and still
    offers flawless sound.
I am very pleased with the unit and would purchase the same item again.
Incidentally, I am very hard to please. Boston A has delivered with this item and the
Crutchfield service and personal touch makes things easy.

    I guess it's ok

Written By Anonymous, Grand Island, NE on Thursday, January 07, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It sounds better then the internal tv speakers, and the pairing the system with the tv remote is nice, one less remote to find, but it's limited range is an issue. Without HDMI the sound is unpredictable depending on the station I'm listening to. It doesn't seperate the channels very well I seem to get a lot of back ground noise making it hard to hear voice. It's sound is pretty brash it's either too soft of too loud, not a lot of in between, But for a self contained system and the price not sure how much more could be expected

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My husband & I purchased a great 47" flatscreen tv in the spring. Everything about it is
great, except the sound. I have a tin ear, so it didn't bother me, but my husband was
less than satisfied. I logged onto Crutchfield's website to see if I could remedy the
situation as a Christmas gift. I didn't want to go the whole surround sound, 7 speakers
to wire route and looked into the sound bar from Boston Acoustics. All the reviews of
this product convinced me that this was the way to go. Crutchfield delivered in less than
24 hours, cost free. I just hooked the soundbar up with absolute ease and used
Tango's directions to program to our remote. My husband is happily pushing buttons
and is completely satisfied. Even my tin ear can't miss the difference. The sound is
awesome! Thanks so much Crutchfield, BA and Tango.

Great sound. How to extend remote range.

Written By Danilo, Everett, WA on Thursday, December 10, 2009

Great sound. A little overpriced but it sounds really good compared to stock plasma or LCD speaker.

NOTE: As one reviewer mentioned here, to extend the range of your remote control, remove the red plastic remote sensor cover. Use a small jewelers screw driver and pry off the red lens cover. Voila, you just extended your remote control range to about 20 feet! Hope that helps.

Great Sound but installation a concern

Written By Marc, Long Island, NY on Thursday, September 24, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

soundbar is a wonderful addition to any TV. Only problem was the audio setup with my TV. Needed to use a 3.5 MM adapter for connection due to the LED technology on the Samsung LED set. Cannot use the conventional RCA plugs into the rear of the set. Must use the side audio plugs. Boston did not include this adapter nor did they know that this was the only way to install. After 3 calls to Crutchfield and finding a supersmart TECH person was this resolved. In fact I returned the original order.

TVee Model 2 - Good if your remote works it well

Written By Jeff, Virginia Beach, VA on Tuesday, September 15, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had the TVee Model 2 for about a week now. Crutchfield delivered with their usual extremely fast delivery.

I wanted a device that would upgrade the poor sound of my otherwise great calibrated LCD TV without; 1. Adding any complexity so the kids and wife would see it as transparent 2. Adding any excess clutter to an already busy room. The TVee Model 2 fits these specs perfectly.

Of course I also wanted good sound without being over the top for my 45+ year old tastes. The TVee Model 2 sounds just right for my use. The mids and highs are nice, flat and tight. The bass on the sub is adjustable from very low to still not obnoxously boomy at the maximum. For normal nightime listening, you will not disturb others in the house. However if you pop in a Blu-Ray or DVD with a wide dynamic range and crank it, it still gives a pretty good cinematic experience (aka-the wife says it's too loud).

The placement of the soundbar was very easy for me and once I figured out the sub has to be in front of you to sound right, that was no problem either.

The bad part. As at least one other reviewer stated, the range of your remote which controls the TVee Model 2 volume can be extremely limited. My LCD TVs remote is all but useless at 6 feet of range. The Cox Cable box remote will give me about 8 feet. What that means for my setup is that you HAVE to get up every time for a volume adjustment. That's not acceptable and Im sad to have to return the unit.

    Remote Control Programming Instructions

Written By tango22, Rockland, ME on Monday, September 14, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sounds good, a big improvement over the tinny television speakers. But Boston
Acoustics' instructions for programming your remote control could have been
more explicit, perhaps something like this:

    1) On the TVee Soundbar: Simultaneously press and hold the POWER button
    and the VOLUME UP button until the TVee Soundbar LED flashes orange;
    2) On the TVee Soundbar: Press and release the button you want to "teach"
    (i.e., VOLUME UP, VOLUME DOWN, or MUTE);
    3) On your Remote Control: With your Remote Control held steady, about 12"
in front of the center of the TVee Soundbar, press (depending on which TVee
function you're trying to teach at this time) the VOLUME UP, VOLUME DOWN,
or MUTE button. You will press this button for about 1 second, release it for
about 1 second, press again for about 1 second, release again for about 1
second, etc, until the TVee LED starts flashing green.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The soundbar is great. It is almost too loud. I can't have it booming when the wife is upstairs watching t.v. Just beware that it only has one set of RCA inputs. It ended up being incompatible with a television I purchased, so I hooked it up to another one. I also like the wireless subwoofer since I didn't want to run a bunch of wires.

    Simple Solution

Written By Sandy, Northeast on Tuesday, July 21, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Here's the quick n dirty review...
I bought the sound bar, and it is unreal. The sound is booming. No wires and not having to add another remote control is wonderful. For those who had a problem with the bar being compatible with the tv- read the directions- it states SPECIFICALLY what to do. I'm glad I never got a complicated home theater system, or a costly Bose system. The sound bar is the best, most simple solution.

Granted I've only had the Tvee 2 for one day, it is still awesome. My wife actually told me it might be too loud which is what I want however I like that you can adjust the levels down as well. I don't have the same IR issues with the remote as other reviews, and I am even 7-10 feet away from the bar. Great customer service and great product.

It's the perfect setup for someone who's needs are less than a full blown surround sound system. I'm impressed. Special thanks to Hannah for her help.

Very good substitute for your TV speakers. Set-up was very easy (use your remote from about 12" away from the bar for set-up and have your TV off) and the sound was very good. Highly recommended. The result is as advertised.

Very good substitute for your TV speakers. Set-up was very easy (use your remote from about 12" away from the bar for set-up and have your TV off) and the sound was very good. Highly recommended. The result is as advertised.
