Who needs a powered subwoofer?

To produce bass, you need a sub, an enclosure, and an amplifier, and it can be little tricky to match them all up. A powered sub eliminates all the hassle, as the manufacturer designs the enclosure to house the sub and amp together. This all-in-one solution is especially useful in smaller vehicles, where there's no room to mount a separate amp, or in any vehicle where you need every bit of cargo space. Powered subs range from small, flat boxes that fit under your seat to larger boxes that go in your trunk.

Our take on the Kicker 11HS8

by John Pollard

Bass that'll fit almost anywhere

When Kicker set out to make the Hideaway™ compact powered sub, they wanted to make a subwoofer that could fit almost anywhere and still deliver the performance that made Kicker famous. At just over 3" tall, the Hideaway™ will fit under many seats and in storage areas where you don't usually find powered subs. The powerful, built-in 150-watt RMS amplifier delivers strong bass that'll add depth and punch to any type of music.

Big performance

The 8" woofer can hit low notes that'll really rock your ride, especially when the Hideaway™ is mounted in the vehicle's interior. The included remote control bass knob will let you adjust the bass level on the fly. Kicker even included Nylon straps with Velcro® fasteners to mount the sub, plus a quick disconnect harness with power and signal wiring that'll make the installation easier.

Installation Note: The Hideaway™ sub will accept preamp-level signals, but you'll need to connect Kicker's ZISL adapter to the sub's 8-foot signal harness so you can plug it into your receiver's preamp outputs.

    Features

Overview: The HS8 HideAway subwoofer features a built-in amplifier (125 watts RMS at < 1% THD+N/150 watts RMS at < 10% THD+N) and an 8" sub housed in a compact enclosure designed to fit in tight spaces.

Remote Control: The wired remote puts output level control within easy reach. The remote comes with a bracket to mount it under the dash. The included 20' cable, with a 3.5mm mini-plug on each end, connects the remote to the amplifier.

Note: The Remote Bass Control measures approximately 2-1/4" wide x 1-1/4" high x 1.75" deep (3" deep including the knob and cable).

Subsonic Filter: Frequencies that cannot be reproduced by the subwoofer do not become sound, but unnecessary oscillations causing distortion; these frequencies also waste amplifier power and can damage speakers. The subsonic filter removes inaudible frequencies to improve the performance of the speakers by eliminating this harmful distortion. The 24 dB/octave subsonic filter's crossover point is 25 Hz.

Mounting: The subwoofer, with its 3-1/4" height, can be mounted in applications with limited space, even under a seat in the passenger compartment of many vehicles.

    Controls

    Auto Turn-on: two position switch

    • +12V: amp turns on when 12 volts is applied to the remote turn-on wire
    • DC: amp turns on when a signal is present on the speaker-level input

    Input Level: two position switch

    • Hi: accepts signal input from 250mV to 10 volts
    • Lo: accepts signal input from 125mV to 5 volts

Phase: two position switch; set the subwoofer phase to 0° or 180°

Bass Boost: rotary dial to adjust the bass boost; continuously variable from 0 to 6 dB; boost centered at 40 Hz

Crossover Frequency: rotary dial to control the low pass crossover frequency; 50 to 120 Hz

Gain: rotary dial to set the amplifier gain control; 250mV to 10 volts for speaker level inputs and 125mV to 5 volts for line level inputs

    Connections

Harness: The Quick-Connect harness has wires for power (17-1/2 feet), ground (2 feet), remote turn-on (2 feet), and signal input (8 feet). If using a speaker level input, just splice into the wire in the harness. If using a line level input, the ZS ZiSL speaker wire to RCA adapter is needed (item number 20609ZISL, sold separately). The included in-line fuse holder should be added to the power wire at the battery location.

Remote Bass: 3.5mm mini-jack for use with the included wired remote

Fuse: one 10-amp ATO fuse installed in the chassis

    Solid little sub

Written By Kevin, Grand Rapids, MI on Sunday, May 12, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a nice solid little sub that will fit just about anywhere. It is well built in a metal enclosure and comes with almost everything for a pain free installation. It fits nicely under the drivers seat (or passenger seat) in my Jeep and adds the badly needed low frequencies that are missing from the dash & roll bar speakers. My only minor issue with the sub is that the ground wire and remote power on wire are too short and I had to splice in another wire to reach my connection points. Other than that I'm really happy with it and how it performs. It is a little pricey, but well worth it when you consider how small it is.
    Pros:
Small, can fit almost anywhere; solidly built; thumps good for its size
    Cons:
Ground wire and remote power on wires are too short

    Unbelievable!!!!

Written By Justin, Indiana on Thursday, April 25, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Originally bought the sound ordnance, however, after getting an extremely loud popping noise when turning my car on or off I decided to give the kicker a try. This thing truly sounds amazing. The sound ordnance produced higher bass notes fairly well but could not hit low notes found in rap. All I can say is that the sound coming from this unit sounds much BIGGER than that of the sound ordnance.
    Pros:
Huge sound, deep bass, no turn on pop like the sound ordnance
    Cons:
    Pricey, but worth it

    Lasts for maybe a month

Written By Evan, Portland, OR on Monday, April 08, 2013

This would get a five star review, it sounds amazing! I got this as a gift with the prepaid installation card. It fits perfectly under the rear seat of my'02 Avalanche. The installation people came to my house to install it; didn't have to leave the driveway!

The sub worked great for about six months, then decided it wasn't going to power up anymore. Contacted the installer, they checked and verified it wasn't an installation issue, then contacted Crutchfield who had it swapped out right away. Went about two weeks, then it started making this funny rattling/crackle noise. Contacted Crutchfield again, and was told that we'd blown the sub! Crutchfield was good enough to swap it out for us anyway. The third sub lasted for about a month and it started the rattle/crackle again. Crutchfield swapped it again, and told us to turn all the volume knobs on the sub down and leave it low for two weeks before turning it up. We left it for three weeks at the low level, then put it back to how the installer had the knobs configured. A month later, we're getting the rattle/crackle again! Three days past warranty now, Crutchfield is good enough to swap it out (this will be #5), but it should last longer and not blow when listening at normal (able to comfortably converse over it) volumes.
    Pros:
Amazing sound, fits perfectly under a seat
    Cons:
Unreliable and apparently very easy to blow at normal volumes.

    Excellent powered sub

Written By Don, Boulder, CO on Monday, March 25, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This little sub was perfect for my needs. I've had 2 JL 12"'s in the trunk before and just didn't feel like dealing with that this time around. Living in CO you need your trunk space for camping and skiing gear. I mounted this under the passenger seat of my car and it produces a ton of clean, tight bass. A friend has the Sound Ordnance sub that is similar to this Kicker. I was a bit hesitant to spend the extra $ at first but I wasn't all that impressed with the Sound Ordnance. The Kicker kills the Sound Ordnance in every aspect. The sound out of the Kicker is much louder and cleaner. I wasn't expecting this thing to put out as much bass as it does. Yes, it's not the same as two 12"s with 500 watts each but I wasn't expecting it to be.

One thing that might help some people out: The way the instructions read is that the remote bass control overrides the gain on the box itself. To me, I read this that once the remote was plugged in the gain on the box didn't matter so Ieft the gain on the sub all the way down. Come to find out that you should turn the gain all the way up on the box and then use the remote. Originally I couldn't figure out why the sub was barely firing. Once I figured this out all was good.
    Pros:
Fit's anywhere, great sound, most of the wiring is included
    Cons:
Using RCA's means buying an adapter, the X-over on the sub can't be disabled

Simple to install and compact; yet not shy to produce deep bass

Written By Peter K, Demarest, NJ on Friday, March 08, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had received this powered sub about two days ago and just installed it temporarily on my 2012 Mazda5 as I needed to free up the trunk space. Previously had installed 10" Kicker CVT driven by JL 250W mono amp. I was on the fence about getting the Sound Ordinance over the Kicker due to price difference but what made me go with Kicker instead was the reviews. Anyway, just installed it (wires everywhere since it's just temporary) to test the bass. I was surprised by the deep bass that it produces and compactness of the design; though slightly thicker than Sound Ordinance; Kicker probably gave it a slighter bigger enclosure to produce a better bass with the 8" sub.

I have mounted underneath the driver's seat since the passenger's seat is already occupied by the Alpine MRF300 4 channel amp. I just ran the RCA from the Kicker to Alpine for line level inputs. It was very simple. Thing that I like about this setup is that now even with fade to front or rear, I get the same bass response from the sub; not like the setup I had before where the high-level inputs were tapped from the rear speakers. I am happy so far and the best part is now I freed up the trunk to carry ski boots, yeah!
    Pros:
Compact sound, quality, and best of all, it's a Kicker!
    Cons:
    None

    Kicker 11HS8 Scratch & Dent

Written By RichardJ, Wichita on Wednesday, February 06, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Had unit installed professionally and it was blown. With just a moderate increase in bass it started to vibrate & rattle and further increase in bass produced a severe bass distortion. Crutchfield representative was very helpful and immediately replaced with an "open stock" unit, very professional & focused on customer care. Customer service rates a "5"
    Pros:
Compact, fit under back seat of Quad Cab Dodge Dakota pickup
    Cons:
Needs a connector sold separately to install and needs to be flagged on processing of order to make sure it's not overlooked

    Kicker 11HS8

Written By DaveW, Grain Valley, MO on Monday, January 21, 2013

I have seen some reviews of this sub on other sites that claim it is weak, don't expect it to shake your mirrors, feel the bass, etc. All I can say is: either these people can't hook up an amp and sub correctly or they put it at the back of Ford Excursion or full size van! This thing is insane... I wanted a little bass to fill out the stock speakers in my Chevy Silverado extended cab. The stock speakers had NO bass at all... I had no room to put in 10" or 12" subs behind the back seat and I really didn't want a big box under it with downfiring subs either. I wanted someone to look inside the truck and not see that anything that did not appear stock. I picked up one of these Kicker Hideaways after reading mixed reviews and got it installed. Let me tell you... I was stunned! I have the gain turned up to 3 (it goes to 11) and this thing shakes my mirrors so hard that I can't use them to see traffic! I listen to mostly rock and metal and it sounds killer... but just to see what it could really do, I put some rap on my iPod and cranked the gain up to 8. You could audibly hear the bass inside my neighbor's bedroom while my truck was on my driveway (I know this because it was 10pm and he came outside to see where the noise was coming from)! This sub is perfect for anyone who wants to add serious bass to their vehicle and ideal for trucks with no room for a traditional box and woofers. If you are considering purchasing this puppy, go for it!
    Pros:
Deep bass, Compact Design, Molex Plug makes hooking it up a breeze, Remote Gain Control switch
    Cons:
RCA Adapter required to hook up to aftermarket stereo with low-level outputs (still easy to do, just wish it came with the sub)

    Very surprised!

Written By CL7, Binghamton, NY on Monday, December 24, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted to add bass in my 2 door Jeep Wrangler without losing any space in the back. I came across the Kicker Hideaway and thought I would give it a shot based on brand name quality. When I received the sub from Crutchfield, I almost returned it without even installing it. It was so small that I thought that there was no way it would give quality bass that I was looking for. I decided to try it and if I didn't like it I would return it. Installation was very easy. I removed my front drivers seat and attached the velcro straps to the floor with self tapping screws. I then ran the speaker wires to the rear of my deck, running at hi level and tapping into my front speakers. I hear a lot of people tap off the rears but I tend to fade more to the front of my Jeep for proper sound stage. I mounted the remote gain knob just to the right of the steering column on the knee kick. My buddy that did most of the install used to be in the car audio business for over 20 years. He noticed how small the power wire was that came with the Kicker and decided to attach it to the power line on my Alpine MRP -F300 amp instead of running it though the firewall to the battery. Worked perfect! After we put the seat back in it was time to hear what it sounded like. All I can say is, wow! It sounds great, not boomy, just nice tight bass. I listen to classic rock (Floyd, Stones, Who, etc...) and i didn't want that "shake the car next to you" bass. Highly recommended!
    Pros:
Size, can be hidden almost anywhere. Tight bass not boomy! easy install Kicker quality
    Cons:
    A little pricey

    Kicker 11HS8

Written By Matt G, Philadelphia, PA on Saturday, December 22, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Does just what it's supposed to, for a small under-seat sub at its price point. This was installed under the passenger seat in a 2009 Toyota Camry. Because both the sub and the head unit (a kenwood DDX719, also purchased from Crutchfield) had level controls, the installer elected not to use the sub's "boost" control and I instead use the sub level settings on the radio instead. Given its size, the base is suprisingly deep and tight. I haven't played with crossover points. Can be set to shake the windows if that's your thing. It WILL vibrate your seat (both the passenger and driver seats). Very happy with my purchase.
    Pros:
Surprisingly deep bass, adjustable, easy install.
    Cons:
Vibrates the seats. No other negatives.

    Awesome Powered Sub

Written By Clint C., Leander,TX on Friday, October 26, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This powered sub delivers on its promise. I knew that I was not going to get earth shattering bass out of this sub, but it still exceeded my expectations. I was just looking to enhance my factory sound, but the amount of low end this little box produces is amazing. It compares with other larger powered enclosures I bought in the past (MTX Thunderform for one). Easy install on my 2012 F150 Supercrew. No remote turn-on needed. Just splice in to your rear speakers, run the power wire to your battery, and ground it to the back seat mounting bolt. Thanks to Eli for recommending it to me.
    Pros:
Great sound in a little package. Easy install. Looks great too.
    Cons:
    None so far.

Awesome Price Point and Great Sound

Written By Adam F, New York, New York on Tuesday, October 09, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I originally got this piece to replace my 10'inch 400W - 2ohm Kicker S3 Ported Box in my Nissan Xterra (2006 S) because I wanted my room back. With that said, I wasn't expecting much but man was I wrong. I am not a bass head - I don't want throbbing base to shake everything. I want a nice, clean sound out of my system that is even and tuned correctly. With this I got it. The sub hits hard at loud volumes, and for the most part the mids and low bass tones come out clear. Some of the higher tones come in weak, but very rarely do I notice it.

Now for my experience with Crutchfield. I originally got my sub and a mini amp (4 channel Rocksford) at the same time, in the same package. When I got the sub I started the installation and realized the remote was missing from the package. With that said I called Crutchfield, and within literally 5 minutes they were overnighting me the remote along with the cable (which I had, but they decided to give me another for my trouble) and the straps (one of them were missing). I was shocked this happened, but the box WAS sealed in plastic so THIS WAS NOT Crutchfields fault, but the fault of Kicker. No biggie, still sounds great and I think the customer service from Crutchfield was amazing.
    Pros:
Great sound, fits in small spaces. Hits hard for a little bass with 150watts
    Cons:
Nothing so far - the high bass notes could be a little more amplified, but what can you do. It is only 150w.

    Incredible Sub!

Written By DaveG, TX on Monday, August 20, 2012

WOW! I just received it Friday and had it professionally installed underneath the passenger seat on Sat. I have a 2012 Subaru WRX. They charged $100 labor and it took them about 1.5hrs. This subwoofer sounds abdolutely incredible. It really enriches the overall sound and if you turn up the gain all the way it will "thump" the inside of your car. Now it won't rattle your whole car like those enormous boxed subwoofers in the trunk will, but that's not really a faair comparison. One thing you will notice is how heavy this thing is! Once I took it out of the package I knew it was going to be a good product. The value is A+ since it already has a built in amp. My other car is a 2003 WRX that has the factory sub underneath the passenger car. I had thought about getting it but they wanted $250 for it. The extra $ i spent for this Kicker was WELL WORTH it. There is no comparison between the two. The Kicker probably has 2-3 times the bass of the factory sub. The other nice feature is the remote bass controller. The factory sub on my 2003 WRX doesn't have that. I have to manually adjust it on the sub with a screwdriver which is a pain. the installer went one step further on my 2012 WRX and mounted the control knob for the bass controller underneath my center console so the knob is flush with the seat heater controls. I can't say enough good things about this subwoofer. Well worth the money. I gues only time will tell the reliability aspect of it.
    Pros:
Awesome bass, very compact, a lot of product for the $$$$, very solid and heavy piece of equipment
    Cons:

    Good Choice

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in an Extended Cab Chevy Colorado. My original plan was to install a subwoofer in-between the two jump seats in the back of the cab, but I discovered that I could fit the subwoofer underneath one of the jump seats and it fits perfectly. All I had to do was remove the little plastic toolbox under the seat by undoing a couple of bolts. I then used one of bolts to secure the ground.

I previously installed 4 Kicker speakers, which is a part of the reason I picked this sub. The sub rounds out the listening experience and I cannot be happier about how the whole system sounds now.

I researched a lot of different options, including building a box, but I'm glad I went with this.

If your Head Unit uses RCA jacks, make sure you get the suggested adapter listed in the "Details" tab (or get whatever you need).
    Pros:
*sounds good *solid construction *good solution for a small truck *didn't have to give up space (like a back seat)
    Cons:
    *none

    Very nice not overpowering sub

This is a very nice powered sub for your vehicle. The unit provides nice bass addition to factory systems without feeling overbearing. For those who would like to add a touch more bass in their system should seriously consider this unit. The units comes with speaker level inputs, so tapping into rear shelf speakers is a snap to provide the audio source for the unit.
    Pros:
Small package, good bass levels, and easy installation.
    Cons:
Should include a speaker level to RCA connector for those who wish to us sub outputs from their head unit.

    Very happy with this sub

I put this in a 07 civic coupe. It fits under the seat with the seat bottom at the lowest position. The case is anodized aluminum and built like a tank. Very solid and compact. I was surprised by the accuracy of the low notes. This is not a one note subwoofer. With some tuning between the controls on the sub and my hu, it has a seamless transition from the highs to lows. Surprisingly good on the punch and accuracy of the notes. I agree with others who were disappointed about the lack of plug and play line level inputs and the way too short remote on wire for under-seat mounting, however, this is not a deal breaker at all for me. If you plan on mounting in the trunk, then these gripes may not even be a concern. The description for this line level hookup is vague and the available adapter is not obviously noted. Ultimately,I just cut up an rca cable and soldered it to the speaker level inputs and put the input switch to on the sub to "Line" and all works fine. I am using with a Kenwood hd952, Infinity in the rear deck and Polk Audio components up front. No seperate amp. Just using the hu amp. The sub has no problem keeping up and has a lot more in reserve. Sounds great with rock, classical, jazz, basically everything I have played on it.
    Pros:
Compact, great build quality, excellent defined bass
    Cons:
Not a neighborhood shaker if you are into that, no plug and play line level input, remote amp wire too short for under seat mounting, which is what this sub is mainly. advertised as.
